HONG KONG: Pakistan’s women’s netball team made an impressive start to their campaign at the Asian Women’s Netball Plate Division Championship, defeating Japan 58-34 in a commanding opening match.

Pakistan controlled the contest from the early stages and never allowed Japan to establish a meaningful lead. The Pakistani players maintained pressure throughout the game, combining disciplined defending with effective attacking moves to keep their opponents on the back foot.

The victory gave Pakistan a strong opening to the championship and will provide the team with valuable confidence ahead of their next fixture.

Japan struggled to match Pakistan’s intensity as the match progressed. Pakistan’s consistent scoring and organized play helped them build a comfortable advantage, which they maintained until the final whistle.

The 24-point victory underlined Pakistan’s determination to make an impact in the competition and build momentum for the matches ahead.

The Asian Women’s Netball Plate Division Championship is being held in Hong Kong, bringing together teams competing for honours in the regional event. Pakistan will now turn their attention to their second match of the tournament.

Pakistan are scheduled to face Thailand on August 10, with the team hoping to carry the confidence from their convincing victory over Japan into the next encounter.

    Two labourers killed, Three injured in Quetta road…

    A Quetta IED blast killed two labourers and injured three others in the Wali Tangi area of Quetta district on Sunday, according to police officials. Police said unidentified attackers planted an improvised explosive device (IED) along the roadside and detonated it remotely when a pickup carrying a contractor and four labourers passed through the area. The incident occurred around 30 kilometres from Quetta. The victims were reportedly travelling to Wali Tangi for construction work related to tube wells. The powerful explosion badly damaged their vehicle. All five people were initially injured and transported to Civil Hospital Quetta, where two later succumbed to their injuries. Police and Frontier Corps personnel quickly reached the blast site, cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to identify and arrest those responsible. In a separate incident in Killi Raisani on the outskirts of Quetta, unidentified armed men shot dead former Afghan army commander Haji Hazrat Ullah, also known as Rorad Achakzai. Police said motorcycle-riding attackers targeted him while he was travelling through the area. The latest violence comes amid growing security concerns in Balochistan, where recent figures indicate a sharp rise in fatalities.

    Pakistan announces Hajj 2027 packages, 107,526 government seats

    ISLAMABAD: The federal government has announced the initial arrangements for Hajj 2027, allocating 107,526 seats under the Government Hajj Scheme and introducing a fully digital application and payment system aimed at making the pilgrimage process easier and more transparent for applicants. Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf said the government has set the estimated cost of the 40-day Hajj package at Rs1.2 million, while the 20 to 25-day package will cost Rs1.3 million. According to the minister, the Hajj 2027 process has been transformed into an end-to-end digital system on the directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with the Ministry of Religious Affairs working in coordination with the Ministry of Information Technology and the National IT Board. The new arrangements are designed to allow intending pilgrims to complete most of the necessary procedures without repeatedly visiting government offices or banks. Applicants will be able to submit their Hajj applications from their homes, deposit the required dues through digital channels and access information and other facilities through the Pak Hajj App and Hajj Portal. Yousaf said the ministry’s primary objective was to reduce the difficulties traditionally faced by pilgrims during the application process. He said the digital system would help eliminate lengthy queues, unnecessary journeys and waiting periods while also making the overall process more convenient for applicants. First instalment to be collected from August 17 The minister announced that the first phase of payments under the approved Hajj Policy 2027 would begin on August 17. Applicants selected under the relevant phase will be required to deposit 50% of the total package cost as the first instalment. The government will subsequently demand the second instalment during the first week of October. The authorities have also opened the final application phase for Hajj 2027. Around 400,000 pilgrims who have already completed the pre-registration process will now be eligible to proceed with their formal applications. Officials expect the digital registration mechanism to simplify verification and reduce delays as the large number of pre-registered applicants move into the next stage. Passport information to be verified digitally The Religious Affairs Ministry has also established a data-sharing arrangement with the Passport Office as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the digital Hajj registration system. Through the integration, applicants’ passport information can be verified more efficiently, potentially reducing paperwork and manual intervention during the application process. Yousaf said linking databases of different government institutions would improve the accuracy and speed of processing while increasing transparency. The minister maintained that the use of digital verification would also reduce the possibility of errors arising from manual data entry and repeated documentation. HBL named banking partner Habib Bank Limited (HBL) has been designated as the authorised banking partner for the Government Hajj Scheme. According to the minister, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and HBL have signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering the banking arrangements associated with Hajj applications and payment of dues. Pilgrims will have three digital payment options available under the government scheme. They can pay through a OneLink PSID, use a credit or debit card, or download a digital challan through the Pak Hajj App and deposit the required amount at any HBL branch. The government has stressed that applicants should use only the officially prescribed channels when making payments. Seats to be confirmed on first-come, first-served basis Under the Government Hajj Scheme, applicants who successfully deposit the required amount through the online payment system will have their seats confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the allocated seats are filled, the authorities will stop accepting further payments for that category. The government has separately allocated 30,000 seats for the Short Hajj Scheme. Online payments for the short-duration package will be closed once the allocated quota is exhausted. Authorities have also outlined arrangements for applicants who are unable to secure a seat during the current phase. If the available Hajj 2027 quota is filled, remaining registered applicants will be placed on a waiting list for the following year. At the same time, registration for the Hajj 2028-2030 period will continue according to the announced policy. The minister said details concerning the 10% payment requirement for the Long-Term Hajj Scheme would be announced after completion of the current application phase. Private Hajj Scheme gets 71,684 seats Alongside the government programme, the federal government has allocated 71,684 seats for the Private Hajj Scheme for 2027. Under the new digital mechanism, pilgrims opting for the private scheme will be able to compare packages offered by 25 government-approved authorised Hajj organisers. The available packages and participating companies will be displayed through the official Hajj Portal and Pak Hajj App, allowing intending pilgrims to choose an organiser and package according to their preferences. The government has made it clear that the selection of private Hajj organisers and payments must also be completed through the designated official digital system. Pilgrims warned against direct payments The Religious Affairs Ministry has issued a specific warning to intending pilgrims against handing over money directly to private Hajj operators or tour companies. Yousaf said any payment or financial transaction conducted outside the officially designated government system would not be recognised. Pilgrims have therefore been advised to verify the status of Hajj organisers through the official digital platform before making any payment. The government believes that centralising the selection and payment process through the digital Hajj system will help protect pilgrims from potential fraud, unauthorised operators and disputes over payments.

The Margalla Hills trails attract a large number of residents and visitors, particularly in the morning and evening hours. The temporary closure is expected to affect routine hiking and recreational activities in the designated areas.     Yami Gautam recalls nearly quitting Bollywood

    Actor Yami Gautam has revealed that she was once on the verge of leaving Bollywood after years of struggling to find meaningful roles despite the success of her debut film. In a recent interview, the Vicky Donor star reflected on one of the most difficult phases of her career, admitting that she had almost returned to her hometown in Himachal Pradesh before her breakthrough with Uri: The Surgical Strike changed everything. Gautam made her Bollywood debut opposite Ayushmann Khurrana in the 2012 hit Vicky Donor. Although the film was well received, she said the success did not translate into the kind of opportunities she had hoped for. Instead, she spent years waiting for substantial roles while being labelled an “unconventional” actress because she had not been introduced as a typical Bollywood heroine. Recalling that difficult period, Gautam told Filmfare: “Just before Uri and Bala, I had made peace with leaving the industry altogether. I thought I’d return to Himachal. We have farmland there. I imagined beginning a completely different life. My parents were incredibly supportive. They simply said, ‘Come home.’” The actress explained that she had become disheartened by the lack of opportunities and had accepted the possibility of stepping away from acting altogether. However, everything changed when she was cast opposite Vicky Kaushal in the 2019 blockbuster Uri: The Surgical Strike. The film proved to be a turning point in her career and restored her confidence in the industry. She recalled: “And strangely, the moment I stopped clinging to the industry out of fear, everything changed. Uri happened. Bala happened. Life changed almost overnight.” During the interview, Gautam also spoke candidly about the challenges of being an outsider in Bollywood. While she said she never viewed being an outsider as the biggest obstacle, she admitted that constantly having to prove herself was emotionally exhausting. She said: “The difficult part wasn’t being an outsider. It was constantly having to prove yourself. Sometimes you’d feel you were ready for a particular opportunity, yet someone else would receive repeated chances simply because they already belonged to the ecosystem.” The Article 370 actor noted that star children often receive multiple opportunities even after unsuccessful projects, while outsiders frequently have to wait years for a single meaningful role. She added: “You’d think, If I were given that many opportunities, wouldn’t I also continue growing as an actor? That was the real frustration.” Despite those experiences, Gautam believes the industry has evolved in recent years and that audiences are placing greater importance on talent rather than background. She concluded: “But I genuinely believe things have changed. Today, audiences don’t care where you come from. They care whether you’re a good actor. Whether your films are worth watching. Whether they trust your choices. That gives me tremendous hope for the next generation.” On the personal front, Yami Gautam married Uri: The Surgical Strike director Aditya Dhar on June 4, 2021. The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Vedavid, on May 10, 2024. Today, Gautam is regarded as one of Bollywood’s most respected performers, with her journey serving as an example of perseverance despite years of setbacks.

    QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring merit and transparency in public-sector recruitment, as 19 officers were appointed to the Balochistan Revenue Authority (BRA) through a selection process conducted by the Higher Education Commission. Speaking at an appointment ceremony on Tuesday, Chief Minister Bugti handed over appointment letters to the newly selected officers and congratulated them on their success. He urged them to perform their responsibilities with dedication, integrity and a strong sense of duty toward the state. The chief minister said the BRA could become an important pillar of Balochistan’s economic development by improving revenue collection and helping reduce the province’s dependence on non-developmental spending. He noted that a substantial share of provincial resources was currently being consumed by such expenditures, limiting the government’s ability to invest in public welfare. Bugti expressed hope that stronger revenue generation would provide additional resources for key sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure and other development projects. Reiterating a commitment he made after assuming office, the chief minister said government employment would not be treated as a commodity and that appointments would be based solely on merit. He cited the recruitment of more than 14,500 teachers in the Education Department as an example of the policy. He also pointed out that candidates from his own home district, Dera Bugti, were unsuccessful in the latest BRA recruitment, describing this as evidence that the selection process had remained impartial. Bugti appreciated Finance Minister Mir Shoaib Nosherwani, BRA Chairperson Abdullah Khan Noorzai and their teams for supporting a transparent recruitment process. He said merit-based appointments were essential for rebuilding young people’s trust in public institutions and encouraged the newly appointed officers to serve with sincerity and professionalism.

    Pakistan Peoples Party Senator Sherry Rehman has criticised India’s water policies, accusing New Delhi of using the flood situation as a tool of “water aggression” against Pakistan. In a statement, Sherry Rehman said India was adopting a contradictory approach by threatening to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty while also releasing floodwater towards Pakistan. She claimed that India opened the gates of the Salal Dam, putting millions of Pakistanis at risk of flooding. She stressed that river water management should be handled responsibly and should not become a source of conflict between the two countries. The senator said India’s alleged failure to provide timely information about water flows had created uncertainty, particularly regarding the flow of the Chenab River. She warned that sudden changes in the river’s water levels could affect Pakistan’s irrigation system and agriculture. The Chenab River supports millions of acres of farmland in Punjab, and any unexpected increase or decrease in water flow could damage crops and impact farmers’ livelihoods. Sherry Rehman said Pakistan’s agricultural economy depends heavily on the proper management of river systems. She added that uncertain water policies could increase risks for farmers and create challenges for the country’s water security. She urged India to respect existing water agreements and follow international commitments. She said western rivers under the Indus Waters Treaty cannot be diverted, stored, or transferred in a manner that affects Pakistan’s water supply.
