Local officials estimated that around 60,000 people reached the enclave, while Spain’s Interior Ministry reported a lower figure. The surge created a major humanitarian and political challenge for Spanish authorities. Many migrants attempted to reach Ceuta by swimming around border barriers in the Mediterranean Sea. Several people collapsed after completing the dangerous crossing, with Red Cross teams providing emergency treatment. At least dozens of migrants reportedly died while attempting to reach the Spanish territory. Spanish officials said that the majority of those who entered Ceuta had already returned to Morocco. Authorities have increased security measures along the maritime border, including the installation of floating barriers to prevent further crossings. Ceuta, home to around 84,000 residents, is one of only two European land borders located in Africa, along with Melilla. The territory has long been a major destination for migrants hoping to enter Europe in search of employment and improved living conditions.   Many migrants said their motivation was driven by economic hardship. Some described difficult working conditions and low wages in Morocco, saying they were searching for stability and better opportunities. Meanwhile, daily life in Ceuta has gradually returned to normal, with shops reopening and traffic resuming after the disruption caused by the migrant surge. However, some residents remain concerned about future migration pressures, while others say security improvements have restored a sense of stability. The latest events have once again highlighted the complex challenges facing Europe and North Africa in managing migration, border security, and humanitarian needs.

During the meeting, the minister directed all provinces to immediately begin offering advanced IT courses and internationally recognised training programmes. The initiative is intended to prepare Pakistan’s youth for opportunities in the global technology sector, freelancing, and the rapidly growing digital economy. Shaza Fatima said developing a workforce with modern digital skills remains one of the government’s top priorities. She emphasised that training programmes should align with international industry standards and market requirements, enabling young Pakistanis to compete effectively in global employment markets. The government believes that expanding access to advanced IT education will not only increase employment opportunities but also help boost Pakistan’s exports of digital services and strengthen the country’s position in the global technology industry. The meeting also focused on improving coordination among IT training institutions to ensure consistent delivery of quality education and practical skills. Officials discussed measures to enhance the effectiveness of training programmes and ensure they meet the evolving demands of employers and technology companies. To monitor progress, the federal minister instructed all IT training institutions to submit weekly performance reports to the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication. The reports will help the ministry assess implementation, track outcomes, and identify areas requiring additional support. Pakistan has been placing greater emphasis on digital transformation in recent years, with increasing attention on technology education, entrepreneurship, freelancing, and software exports.     More than 33,000 candidates will appear for the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) in Sindh as students compete for 5,100 medical and dental seats across the province. The entrance examination for admission to medical colleges will be held on Sunday, August 16, across various centres in Sindh. The MDCAT examination in the province will be conducted under the supervision of Sukkur IBA Testing Service. According to Vice Chancellor Sukkur IBA Professor Dr Asif Sheikh, more than 33,000 candidates are expected to participate in the test, including 20,934 female candidates and over 12,600 male candidates. Vice Chancellor Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) Dr Siraj Memon stated that a total of 5,100 seats have been allocated for medical education in Sindh. These include 2,300 MBBS seats and 2,800 BDS seats, including seats reserved under different quota categories. This year, the responsibility for managing medical college admissions has been assigned to Jinnah Sindh Medical University. The university will oversee the admission process following the MDCAT results. Karachi will have the highest number of candidates appearing for the examination, with 10,661 students registered. Among them, 8,186 are female candidates and 2,475 are male candidates. Other major examination centres include Hyderabad, where 9,470 candidates will participate, including 5,287 female and 4,183 male students. In addition, 3,066 candidates will appear in Larkana, 2,067 in Mirpurkhas, 2,511 in Shaheed Benazirabad, and 5,462 in Sukkur. An additional examination centre has also been established in Islamabad, where 300 candidates will take part. The MDCAT centre in Karachi will be established at NED University. Special seating arrangements have been made for parents at the adjacent banquet facility. Candidates have been instructed to reach their examination centres by 6:30 a.m., while the test will begin at 10:00 a.m. The MDCAT will consist of multiple-choice questions carrying a total of 180 marks, with a duration of three hours. Candidates seeking admission to medical colleges will require a minimum of 55 percent marks, while dental college applicants must secure at least 50 percent marks. There will be no negative marking in the examination. Sukkur IBA officials stated that the answer key will be uploaded after the test. To ensure transparency, students will be allowed to solve the paper using a carbon copy, which they can keep for verification purposes. The MDCAT results are expected to be announced by August 22.

    Heavy monsoon rains continue to cause widespread devastation across Pakistan, with Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) suffering significant casualties and damage. According to disaster management authorities, at least 43 people have lost their lives and 177 others have been injured due to rain-related incidents, while officials have warned that more heavy rainfall and possible flooding are expected in the coming days. In Punjab, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported 21 deaths and 154 injuries linked to the ongoing monsoon season. Lahore has been among the worst-hit cities, receiving approximately 343 millimeters of rainfall over the past 48 hours. The intense downpour flooded roads, underpasses, and low-lying neighborhoods, causing severe traffic disruptions and exposing weaknesses in the city’s drainage infrastructure. Emergency drainage operations were launched across the provincial capital to remove accumulated rainwater. Most fatalities in Punjab resulted from roof and building collapses, which claimed 15 lives. Additional deaths were caused by lightning strikes, electrocution, and drowning. Authorities also reported damage to dozens of homes, highlighting the vulnerability of aging structures during extreme weather conditions. A tragic incident occurred in Lahore when a 19-year-old motorcyclist was critically injured after being electrocuted while riding through flooded streets in the Chungi Amar Sidhu area. The victim was immediately shifted to Lahore General Hospital for emergency treatment. Heavy rainfall also forced the closure of several underpasses and roads in DHA and other parts of the city due to waterlogging, while traffic was diverted through alternative routes. In addition, rain damaged an 11kV electricity line, causing temporary power outages in affected areas. The city also witnessed the formation of multiple sinkholes after continuous rainfall weakened road surfaces. Traffic authorities sealed off the affected locations, redirected vehicles, and coordinated with municipal departments to begin urgent repair work. Earlier, two teenage brothers lost their lives when their motorcycle skidded on a rain-soaked road near Lahore while traveling toward Kasur. Officials attributed the accident to slippery road conditions and urged motorists, particularly motorcyclists, to reduce speed, wear helmets, and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa recorded 22 deaths and 23 injuries in rain-related incidents. The victims included men, women, and several children. The province also suffered damage to 37 houses, with eight completely destroyed and the remaining partially damaged. The affected districts include Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Bajaur, Swabi, and several others. The K-P PDMA stated that rescue teams, district administrations, and emergency services are working together to provide relief and assistance to affected families. Although river water levels currently remain within normal limits, authorities have placed all districts on high alert due to forecasts of continued heavy rainfall. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned that another spell of widespread rain is expected across Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Kashmir over the next 24 hours. Officials fear urban flooding, flash floods in local streams, and landslides in hilly regions such as Murree and Galiyat. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from damaged buildings and flood-prone areas, and follow official safety advisories to minimize further loss of life and property.
