A towering new statue of the Virgin Mary has been unveiled in a small Polish village, instantly becoming the tallest statue anywhere in Europe. Standing at 55.6 metres, the monument now dominates the local skyline.

The devotional sculpture was consecrated by a local bishop during a ceremony held on Saturday in the rural village of Konotopie. The unveiling comes at a notable moment, as the Catholic Church’s broader influence over public life in Poland continues to decline.

Despite its scale, the statue sits in a remote location, far from any of Poland’s major population centres. Its placement was reportedly requested specifically by a wealthy local couple who funded the project.

During the ceremony, two helicopters were seen circling above the towering figure, which stands with arms open and a large crown atop its head. The dramatic aerial display added to the significance of the occasion.

While Poland remains a predominantly Catholic country, many younger Poles living in urban areas have grown increasingly distant from the church and its traditions. The statue’s unveiling arrives against that broader backdrop of shifting religious engagement.

Among those attending Saturday’s ceremony was Lech Walesa, the former Polish president who played a central role in the collapse of communism in the country. Now 82, Walesa reflected on his own life journey in comments to the Associated Press, describing his story as one that started and ended with the Virgin Mary.

Local authorities are hoping the massive structure will serve a dual purpose going forward, functioning as both a significant pilgrimage site and a tourist attraction. To support that goal, the statue includes a viewing platform built directly into its base, offering visitors a chance to take in sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.

The unveiling adds Poland to the small list of countries hosting record-breaking religious monuments, and local officials appear hopeful the structure will draw visitors from well beyond the immediate region in the years ahead.

    The AJK reserved seats election will be held on August 24, with the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission announcing the schedule for polling in the Legislative Assembly. According to the notification, voting will take place at the AJK Assembly from 10am to 1pm. The reserved seats include five for women, one for Ulema-e-Deen or Mashaikh, one for Jammu and Kashmir state subjects living abroad, and one for technocrats and other professionals. Candidates will be able to submit their nomination papers on August 20 between 9am and 2pm. The returning officer will subsequently scrutinise the papers and publish the list of valid candidates. Appeals against decisions on nomination papers can be filed on August 21. The Chief Election Commissioner will hear the appeals on August 22, while candidates can withdraw their nominations before 2pm on August 23. The AJK Assembly has 53 members, including 45 directly elected members and eight members elected through reserved seats. However, polling on seven directly elected seats could not take place because of law and order concerns. As a result, the reserved-seat election will initially be conducted by the 38 directly elected members elected so far. In an interview with Russian media outlet News.ru, Ryabkov said Moscow had seen signs that Washington was prepared for constructive discussions and showed some understanding of Russia’s position. “At this stage, it is more important to what extent Washington is able to influence the decisions of the Kyiv regime and its European sponsors,” he said. Ryabkov accused some European countries of continuing to seek what he called a “strategic defeat” of Russia, highlighting one of the central obstacles facing any potential peace agreement. Moscow Awaits New Proposals Russia and the United States have held discussions aimed at finding a path towards ending the Ukraine conflict, but negotiations have made little visible progress. The Kremlin said on Thursday that it had not received information about a possible new visit to Moscow by US presidential envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. The two have previously played prominent roles in contacts with Russian officials. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last month that Washington remained committed to helping end the war after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Manila. Moscow has repeatedly said it is willing to negotiate, but insists that any settlement must acknowledge what it calls the new realities created by the conflict. Ukraine and its Western allies have opposed recognising Russian territorial gains, making the issue one of the most difficult elements of any potential peace agreement. The challenge for Washington is therefore not simply bringing Moscow and Kyiv back to negotiations, but finding terms that could satisfy competing demands over territory, security guarantees and the future political order in the region. Nuclear Dialogue Also on the Table Ryabkov also signalled that Moscow wants to keep diplomatic channels open with Washington on nuclear weapons. The issue has gained urgency since the New START treaty expired in February, leaving Russia and the United States without binding limits on their strategic nuclear arsenals for the first time in more than five decades. Moscow has said it would continue observing the treaty’s limits on missiles and warheads as long as Washington does the same. “We remain open in the future to find political and diplomatic ways to stabilise this area,” Ryabkov said. The nuclear issue adds another layer to an already complicated US-Russia relationship. Even as the two countries remain deeply divided over Ukraine, Moscow appears keen to prevent the collapse of communication on strategic weapons. For now, Russia’s message is that the door to diplomacy remains open — but only proposals that reflect Moscow’s stated conditions and its view of the battlefield are likely to receive serious consideration. With the war continuing and previous negotiations stalled, the next major test will be whether Washington can persuade Kyiv, Moscow and European governments to move beyond competing positions and return to substantive peace discussions.
