Abu Dhabi offers free three-month visas to Indian tourists

Abu Dhabi has introduced a special visa-fee waiver for eligible Indian tourists as part of efforts to boost tourism in the United Arab Emirates. Under the initiative, selected Indian travellers will receive a waiver of the full UAE entry visa fee. The offer is available from August 1 to October 31, 2026, during a pilot programme that will cover up to 20,000 eligible travellers. To qualify, Indian passport holders must book a travel package from India to Abu Dhabi. The package must include a stay of at least three consecutive nights at a hotel in Abu Dhabi and a return flight. The booking must also be made through a participating travel partner or an online travel agency. Travellers cannot apply for the free visa independently or directly. The visa-fee waiver will only be available to passengers who meet the specified conditions and book their trip through the designated travel channels. The three-month initiative is designed to attract more Indian visitors to Abu Dhabi and increase tourism activity during the late summer and early autumn period. Although the visa fee will be waived, travellers will generally remain responsible for the cost of flights, accommodation and other travel expenses, unless additional discounts are included in their selected package. The initiative is part of Abu Dhabi’s broader efforts to introduce attractive tourism offers and strengthen visitor numbers. The UAE has been seeking to support its tourism sector amid regional tensions and their impact on travel patterns. Authorities are introducing promotional packages and other incentives to maintain tourism activity and attract visitors from key international markets.

Senate erupts over Imran Khan’s medical treatmen…

ISLAMABAD: The Senate witnessed a heated exchange between the opposition and government benches on Tuesday over the medical treatment of PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan. The dispute centred on the implementation of an August 18 Supreme Court order concerning Imran Khan’s treatment. The court had directed authorities to shift him to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad and form a medical board that would include his sister and personal physician. The government, however, took Imran Khan to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), citing security concerns. He was later returned to Adiala Jail after doctors declared him medically fit. The opposition accused the government of failing to comply with the Supreme Court’s directions. The government rejected the allegation and maintained that the authorities had acted within the framework of the court order. The issue came up after PTI parliamentary leader Barrister Ali Zafar sought permission to move a resolution regarding the Supreme Court’s directions. Presiding Officer Shahadat Awan did not allow the resolution, ruling that the matter was sub judice. Opposition senators were instead allowed to raise the issue through points of order. Zafar argued that Parliament must uphold the Constitution and ensure compliance with decisions of the Supreme Court. He claimed that Imran Khan had neither been shifted to Shifa International Hospital nor examined by the medical board mentioned in the court’s order. He also alleged that the required facilities for examining the PTI founder were not available at PIMS. Zafar said political differences should not affect a person’s access to medical care. He urged the government to separate Imran Khan’s political status from his health and medical needs. PTI Senator Azam Swati also criticised the government, accusing it of adopting different standards in dealing with political figures. He cited previous instances in which government institutions had facilitated political leaders. The government defended its position through Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah. He said the state had complied with the Supreme Court’s directions while taking security considerations into account. Sanaullah said the court had also allowed the administration to assess security arrangements. He maintained that Imran Khan was therefore taken to a government hospital where qualified doctors were available. According to Sanaullah, a panel of doctors examined Imran Khan and found his condition satisfactory. He said the PTI founder was subsequently returned to jail. The adviser said the matter was already before the Supreme Court and a report would be submitted on September 16. He argued that the court itself should determine whether its order had been properly implemented. Opposition Leader in the Senate Allama Raja Nasir Abbas urged the government to demonstrate political maturity and implement the Supreme Court’s order in letter and spirit. He also proposed forming a Senate committee to visit Imran Khan in jail and assess the situation.

Naqvi’s Iran visit focused on ties, regional pea…

ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office on Wednesday said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s ongoing visit to Iran is focused on strengthening bilateral relations, discussing security matters and supporting efforts for peace and stability in the region. Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said during his weekly briefing that Naqvi, who reached Tehran on Tuesday, was meeting senior Iranian officials as part of Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement. The spokesperson said the visit provides an opportunity for Pakistan and Iran to discuss bilateral relations, security concerns and developments in the region. He added that particular attention was being given to promoting peace, stability and constructive dialogue among regional parties. Naqvi was received in Tehran by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. He subsequently met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to Iranian media reports. Pakistan’s broader mediation efforts between Iran and the United States also featured prominently in the briefing. Andrabi said Islamabad remains engaged with other friendly countries to help address tensions and create conditions for dialogue. He said Pakistan was making efforts to bring the two sides to the negotiating table and build on the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. According to the spokesperson, Islamabad wants diplomatic engagement to help reduce tensions and contribute to regional stability. Andrabi also said Pakistan would continue using both direct and indirect diplomatic channels to deal with obstacles to dialogue and encourage a constructive process for resolving outstanding issues. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye defence pact The Foreign Office spokesperson also highlighted the recently signed defence agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. The pact was signed in Makkah last Friday and seeks to strengthen cooperation and collective deterrence among the three countries. Under the agreement, an attack against one member is to be treated as an attack against all signatories. Andrabi described the agreement as defensive in character and said it reflected the three countries’ longstanding ties and shared responsibility for regional security. He stressed that the pact was not directed against any particular country. Instead, he said, it provides a framework for coordinated efforts to address security threats and challenges facing the member states. Pakistan rejects India’s AJK remarks The Foreign Office also rejected recent comments by India’s Ministry of External Affairs concerning alleged human rights violations in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Andrabi termed India’s remarks baseless and questioned New Delhi’s criticism by pointing to what Pakistan describes as a record of repression in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. He alleged that excessive use of force, arbitrary detentions, restrictions on political activity and extensive security powers continued to raise serious human rights concerns there. The spokesperson said India’s attempts to politicise developments in AJK could not divert attention from the situation in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s stated commitment to protecting fundamental rights and democratic freedoms in AJK.

Pakistan pushes for renewed US and Iran talks under Islamabad agreement

Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to helping revive negotiations between the United States and Iran, saying it is making every possible effort to bring both sides back to the framework established under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding signed last month. Officials believe renewed dialogue remains the best path to easing tensions in the Middle East and restoring regional stability. Speaking at the Foreign Office’s weekly media briefing on Thursday, spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said Pakistan remains concerned about the fragile security situation in the region despite a brief period of relative calm in recent days. He said the temporary reduction in violence had raised hopes for a lasting ceasefire, but recent developments have shown that the situation remains highly unstable. Andrabi stressed that Pakistan continues to support diplomacy as the only practical solution to the conflict. He said Islamabad welcomes every effort aimed at maintaining the pause in hostilities and encouraging both Washington and Tehran to return to negotiations. According to him, Pakistan remains actively engaged with all relevant parties and will continue supporting diplomatic initiatives. He added that discussions are still taking place to restore stability, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. Pakistan, he said, is working to encourage both countries to resume talks under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding while also following the commitments outlined in the Pakistan Qatar joint statement issued on June 22. The Foreign Office urged both the United States and Iran to exercise restraint and honour their commitment to restart technical level discussions. Andrabi said continued dialogue is essential to resolving outstanding disputes and preventing another escalation that could threaten regional peace and global energy supplies. The Islamabad memorandum of understanding was signed on June 18 after weeks of diplomatic efforts. The agreement was intended to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and create conditions for ending the wider conflict that began following US and Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year. Under the understanding, both sides had agreed to continue negotiations over the following two months. However, tensions returned on July 7 when Iran launched attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, including a Qatari liquefied natural gas tanker. Tehran accused Washington of violating the agreement, leading to renewed US military strikes on Iranian targets. Since then, the conflict has expanded, with Houthi forces in Yemen imposing a naval blockade affecting Saudi Arabia and increasing pressure on another key maritime route. Violence has continued to spread across the region. On Wednesday, explosions were reported at a natural gas export facility in Egypt, while a US owned floating storage vessel was reportedly struck by a drone. At the same time, the United States and Saudi Arabia carried out joint operations against Iran backed armed groups in Iraq following attacks on American troops and Saudi energy infrastructure. After several days without major military action, the United States also launched fresh strikes against Iranian targets on Thursday in response to attacks on American bases in Jordan. During the briefing, Andrabi also rejected a recent documentary produced by Germany’s international broadcaster Deutsche Welle about Pakistan’s nuclear programme. He described the report as misleading and said it relied on outdated claims, speculation, and one sided sources. The spokesperson argued that the documentary failed to accurately reflect the history and purpose of Pakistan’s nuclear programme. He said responsible journalism requires balanced reporting and careful verification, adding that publishing unsupported allegations could damage the broadcaster’s credibility. He maintained that Pakistan has a strong command and control system for its nuclear assets, supported by legal, technical, and institutional safeguards that meet international standards. According to Andrabi, these arrangements have been recognised by independent experts. Responding to questions about India’s decision to block social media accounts belonging to Pakistan Television and other Pakistani platforms, Andrabi criticised the move, calling it another example of restrictions on independent media. He said the Indian government was attempting to limit access to alternative viewpoints while promoting an official narrative. He also urged the international community to take notice of what he described as shrinking space for free expression and media freedom in India.
