Pro-Palestine activists call for Spider-Man film boycott

Pro-Palestinian campaigners in Lebanon, Jordan and other parts of the Arab world have urged audiences to boycott Spider-Man: Brand New Day, citing producer Avi Arad’s public support for Israel.

The boycott campaign is focused on Arad’s political views and background rather than the film’s storyline, cast or other members of its production team.

The Campaign to Boycott Supporters of Israel in Lebanon called on audiences to avoid purchasing tickets for the film. The group argued that spending money on a production associated with individuals who openly support Israel could contribute to what it described as cultural normalisation.

The campaign also urged cinemas and audiences to reject paid screenings of the movie as part of broader efforts to oppose Israeli policies.

A similar call was issued in Jordan by the Taharrak anti-normalisation movement. The group urged the public to boycott the film and called on cinemas to remove it from their screening schedules.

The campaign also appealed to the Jordanian Artists Syndicate, cinema operators and other relevant organisations to take a position against the movie’s screening. Activists and social media personalities in other Arab countries have subsequently amplified the boycott calls.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker and is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Marvel lists Arad among the film’s producers, alongside Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal and Rachel O’Connor.

Arad, a former Marvel Studios chief, holds both Israeli and US citizenship. He served in the Israeli military from 1965 to 1968 and was involved in the 1967 Six-Day War.

Campaigners have also pointed to comments Arad made in 2024 while criticising then-US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Schumer had described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an obstacle to peace and called for new elections in Israel.

In a letter published by entertainment outlet TheWrap, Arad rejected Schumer’s position and argued that US politicians should not seek to influence Israel’s electoral process. He also referred to his military service and opposed Schumer’s position regarding a ceasefire.

Pro-Palestinian campaigners say Arad’s statements reflect his political support for Israel and argue that audiences should avoid financially supporting productions linked to him.

The impact of the boycott campaign on the film’s commercial performance remains uncertain. Despite the calls for a boycott, the movie continued to screen in Lebanon, where a representative of the Grand Cinemas chain said shortly after its release that audience demand remained strong.

Maulana Tariq Jamil’s yoga video sparks mixed reactions online

Maulana Tariq Jamil, one of Pakistan’s most respected Islamic scholars, has become the center of an online debate after a video of him performing yoga exercises surfaced on social media. Widely admired for his calm demeanor and inclusive approach to religious teachings, Maulana Tariq Jamil enjoys a large following across different schools of thought in Pakistan and abroad. Over the years, he has built a reputation for promoting unity, compassion, and moral values through his lectures. In addition to his religious work, he has also ventured into business with his own brand, a move that has occasionally drawn criticism from some quarters who question the commercialization of religious personalities. The latest discussion surrounding the scholar, however, has little to do with his sermons or business activities. Instead, it centers on a recently circulated video featuring him alongside Dr. Affan Qaiser, in which he demonstrates several yoga-inspired stretching exercises. The clip quickly gained traction across social media platforms, with many viewers expressing surprise at the scholar’s flexibility. Considering his age and previous health challenges, several users praised his physical fitness and commitment to maintaining an active lifestyle. Many described the video as inspiring, saying it highlighted the importance of mobility, exercise, and healthy aging. Others, however, questioned whether the video should have been recorded and shared publicly. Some critics argued that such content was unexpected from a religious figure of Maulana Tariq Jamil’s stature, while others believed it was unnecessary to turn a private fitness session into a public spectacle. The video also prompted reactions from public figures. Among those commenting was politician Hina Parvez Butt, who voiced her disapproval of the clip, adding another layer to the discussion already unfolding online. As the debate intensified, social media users remained sharply divided. Supporters argued that the movements shown in the video were simply physical exercises aimed at improving flexibility and overall health. They maintained that stretching routines and yoga-based movements should not be viewed negatively when practiced solely for fitness purposes. Others defended the scholar by pointing out that maintaining physical health is encouraged and that there was nothing inappropriate about engaging in exercises designed to improve strength and mobility. Many also praised Maulana Tariq Jamil for staying physically active despite his advancing age. On the other hand, critics expressed discomfort with the video, saying they did not expect to see the religious scholar performing such poses. Some users felt the footage should not have been made public, while others questioned whether it aligned with the public image associated with a prominent Islamic preacher. Despite the differing opinions, the video has generated widespread discussion online, with thousands of users continuing to share their views. While some see it as a positive reminder of the importance of health and fitness, others believe the clip has crossed personal or cultural boundaries. The viral video has once again demonstrated how social media can rapidly turn everyday moments involving public figures into nationwide conversations, leaving audiences divided over interpretation, intent, and public perception.

Heavy snow halts Spantik mission to recover Dr Asma

GILGIT: A rescue mission to recover the body of Pakistani climber Dr Asma Mushtaq from Spantik Peak was halted on Sunday as heavy snowfall made the treacherous mountain too dangerous for the recovery team. Dr Asma Mushtaq, 34, died on Thursday while descending from the 7,027-metre Spantik, also known as Golden Peak, in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Shigar district. She reportedly suffered from high-altitude sickness after reaching the summit. Her body remains at an altitude of around 6,400 metres near Camp 3. According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), a recovery team that left on Saturday reached Camp 2 but was forced to suspend the operation because of worsening weather. The team was advised to return to base camp and wait for a safer weather window. Efforts are also under way to obtain approval for a humanitarian helicopter mission with the support of the Pakistan Army. However, officials said helicopters cannot operate at altitudes above 6,000 metres to retrieve the body. The body must therefore first be brought down by a ground rescue team. ACP General Secretary Ayaz Shigri said a six-member local team was working to transport Dr Asma Mushtaq’s body to base camp, from where an army helicopter could potentially airlift it to Skardu. The recovery operation has also raised questions about the responsibilities of the expedition operator. Baltistan Division Commissioner Kamal Khan said the tour operator had violated mountaineering regulations by failing to arrange the required recovery team and helicopter arrangements. He said operators are responsible for arranging ground rescue and helicopter insurance when required. The official also alleged that mandatory briefing and debriefing procedures under the Mountaineering Rules 1999 had not been followed. However, Mr Khan rejected suggestions that negligence had caused the delay, saying local authorities arranged a recovery team soon after the incident on humanitarian grounds. The ACP stressed that it is Pakistan’s national federation for mountaineering and sport climbing, rather than a dedicated rescue organisation. It said Pakistan still lacks a properly established high-altitude rescue system and called for stronger mountaineering infrastructure. Dr Asma Mushtaq, originally from Lahore, was a UK-based obstetrics and gynaecology doctor and an avid traveller, vlogger and mountaineer. She had documented several expeditions online and had completed the winter ascent of Musa ka Musallah. Meanwhile, bad weather has also halted the recovery of US climber Sarah Mallory Geis from Broad Peak. Her body was recovered by three local porters after she went missing in a deadly avalanche on July 30. It remains at Broad Peak base camp awaiting an army helicopter flight to Skardu. The incidents have once again highlighted the extreme dangers of high-altitude mountaineering — and the urgent need for a reliable rescue system in Pakistan’s towering Karakoram.

Margaret Qualley, Jack Antonoff not ready to give …

Margaret Qualley and Jack Antonoff have reportedly decided that their relationship has reached its end, with new reports suggesting the former couple has no plans to reconcile following their recent separation. After nearly three years of marriage, the actress and music producer are said to be moving forward with their lives while continuing to treat one another with kindness and respect. Although their split has saddened fans, sources insist the breakup remains amicable and free from the drama often associated with celebrity relationships.  According to multiple reports, an insider revealed that Qualley and Antonoff have “no plans to reconcile.” While they remain in contact and continue communicating respectfully, both have accepted that their romantic journey together has come to an end. The source added that the pair are handling the separation with maturity, focusing on compassion rather than conflict as they navigate this new chapter.  The couple’s split first became public earlier this month, nearly three years after they tied the knot in an intimate New Jersey wedding in August 2023. They began dating in 2021, quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s most admired couples before getting engaged in 2022. Rumors of trouble intensified after Antonoff attended Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding without Qualley, while fans also noticed that the actress had quietly removed several wedding-related photos from her social media accounts.  Despite widespread speculation, representatives for Qualley have strongly denied rumors that infidelity or trust issues played any role in the separation. In an official statement, her spokesperson emphasized that reports suggesting betrayal were “categorically untrue” and stressed that the relationship ended with mutual respect and care. The statement also urged the public to avoid believing anonymous rumors and to respect the former couple’s privacy during this difficult period.  Both stars now appear focused on their respective careers. Qualley has returned to filming Possession, a remake of the acclaimed 1981 psychological horror film, marking her first public appearance since the breakup. Meanwhile, Antonoff has resumed his daily routine and continues working on music projects with his band Bleachers. Reports also note that the band has quietly removed the song “Margaret,” originally written in honor of Qualley, from its current tour setlist.  Although the end of their marriage has disappointed many fans, insiders insist there is no lingering bitterness between the two. Instead, both are choosing to move forward with grace while supporting each other’s personal and professional futures. Their respectful approach serves as a reminder that not every high-profile breakup is defined by conflict or controversy.  For now, Margaret Qualley and Jack Antonoff appear committed to separate paths. While they are not expected to give their romance another chance, they remain determined to preserve the mutual admiration and kindness that once formed the foundation of their relationship. As they focus on new opportunities and fresh beginnings, fans will undoubtedly continue cheering for both stars in the next chapters of their lives.

PTI chairman barrister Gohar Says Noreen Niazi’s…

Rawalpindi: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has clarified that the recent statement made by Noreen Niazi regarding the “Battle of Truth” (Maarka-e-Haq) does not reflect the official policy of the party. Speaking to the media in Rawalpindi, Barrister Gohar emphasized that the remarks were Noreen Niazi’s personal views and should not be interpreted as PTI’s official position. During the media interaction, Barrister Gohar said that every Pakistani takes pride in the country’s success in what he described as the Maarka-e-Haq. He stressed that Pakistan’s defense is strong and capable of protecting the country from any external threat. According to him, the nation remains united when it comes to safeguarding its sovereignty, and no enemy has the ability to defeat Pakistan. Addressing questions about Noreen Niazi’s comments, Barrister Gohar explained that, according to the information available to him, the interview in question had actually been recorded around three months ago. He stated that the remarks expressed during that interview represented Noreen Niazi’s personal opinion and not the official stance of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. He reiterated that the party’s policies are determined through its official leadership and decision-making process, not through individual statements. The PTI chairman further said that the party has consistently been trying to improve the overall political atmosphere in the country. He noted that political leaders should avoid reopening old controversies and instead focus on reducing tensions. According to Barrister Gohar, this is a time for restraint and reconciliation rather than confrontation. He remarked that everyone should avoid revisiting past disputes if the goal is to create a more stable political environment. Speaking about the current political climate, Barrister Gohar also referred to comments made by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. He pointed out that the senior politician had already clarified his earlier remarks. Barrister Gohar observed that, during emotional speeches, public figures may sometimes say things that they later need to explain. However, he added that if a statement is incorrect, it should be acknowledged as such regardless of who made it. He further emphasized that certain sensitive matters should not be discussed publicly if doing so could worsen the political situation. According to him, some issues are better left untouched in order to help the country move toward greater political stability and national harmony. He urged political leaders and stakeholders to exercise caution in their public statements and avoid comments that could increase tensions. Barrister Gohar also spoke about PTI’s position regarding the upcoming Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. He stated that, at present, the party’s official decision is to boycott the elections. However, he indicated that the decision is not necessarily final and could be reviewed if political conditions improve in the future. He revealed that there had been internal discussions within the party about reconsidering the boycott. According to Barrister Gohar, some members believed that PTI should revisit its decision and participate in the elections. Nevertheless, he explained that the party leadership could not reach a consensus on changing the existing policy. As a result, the decision to boycott the AJK elections remains in place for now. The PTI chairman concluded by reiterating the party’s commitment to promoting political stability and constructive dialogue. He stressed that while differences of opinion are a normal part of politics, all political actors should prioritize national unity and work toward creating an environment that supports peace, democratic processes, and institutional stability.

Taylor Swift breaks silence after marrying Travis Kelce

Taylor Swift has returned to social media with her first post since marrying NFL star Travis Kelce, although the pop superstar has yet to publicly share wedding photos from their highly anticipated celebration. The 14-time Grammy winner took to Instagram Stories on Monday, August 17, to share her latest musical obsession. Swift posted a promotional image for fellow singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers’ newly released album, Lost Weekend, and admitted that she had been unable to stop listening to the record. The heartfelt message also served as a birthday tribute to Bridgers, who recently turned 32. Swift praised both the album and her fellow artist for the emotional depth of the project, particularly its approach to grief and personal experiences. In her Instagram message, Swift described Bridgers’ ability to write about grief with vulnerability and detail as an “absolute triumph,” while praising the trust she places in listeners by sharing such honest and deeply personal emotions through her music. Swift’s social media update comes shortly after she made a surprise appearance at the United Kingdom wedding of her longtime recording engineers Laura Sisk and Oli Jacobs. The private celebration took place on August 16 at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in Gloucestershire. Swift’s unexpected appearance quickly generated excitement among fans after photos and glimpses from the event began circulating online. Swifties paid close attention to her appearance, with many commenting on her hairstyle as well as the large wedding ring visible on her hand. The singer attended the celebration without Kelce, who remained in Kansas City, marking one of the first public occasions since their wedding that the newlyweds have been seen apart. Their temporary time apart has also prompted interest in how Swift and Kelce are managing their relationship while balancing demanding schedules and commitments in different locations. According to an insider quoted by Rob Shuter, the couple is determined not to allow physical distance to create problems in their marriage. The source explained that Swift and Kelce understand how easily busy schedules can affect communication between couples. They are reportedly making a conscious effort to stay connected rather than allowing their professional responsibilities to push their relationship into the background. The insider also emphasized that the couple understands the importance of small gestures in maintaining a strong marriage. Even a brief phone call, the source suggested, can make a meaningful difference when both partners are occupied with their own responsibilities. Swift and Kelce are now experiencing their first period of time apart since their reported wedding at Madison Square Garden in New York on July 3, 2026. Despite the distance, the couple appears focused on keeping their relationship strong while continuing to navigate their busy lives. Swift’s latest Instagram post may have focused on music rather than her personal life, but it still marked a significant moment for fans eagerly waiting for a glimpse into her life as a newlywed.
