PSX closes higher despite volatile trading

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed a positive trading session on Tuesday, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index gaining 1,116 points to close at 177,083 points.

The index remained volatile throughout the trading session and moved within a range of 1,755 points. It reached an intraday high of 178,768 points before easing from its peak as investors adjusted their positions.

Trading activity remained strong, with approximately 710 million shares changing hands in 25 billion rupees worth of transactions. The high trading volume reflected continued investor participation and active buying and selling across various sectors.

Despite the rise in the benchmark index, the overall market capitalisation declined by around 120 billion rupees, falling to 19,833 billion rupees by the end of the session.

The market’s performance reflected a mixed trend, as investors continued to monitor economic developments and market conditions while actively repositioning their portfolios.

    LPG becomes costlier from August

    The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has increased the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for August, raising the cost for both domestic and commercial consumers across Pakistan. According to an official notification issued by Ogra, the price of LPG has been increased by Rs12.89 per kilogram, taking the new official rate to Rs254.32 per kg for the month of August. The regulator also revised the price of the standard 11.8-kilogram domestic LPG cylinder, which will now cost Rs3,000.92 following the latest increase. The revised prices will come into effect for the entire month of August under Ogra’s monthly pricing mechanism. The increase is expected to place an additional financial burden on households that rely on LPG for cooking and heating, particularly in areas without access to natural gas. Commercial users, including restaurants, hotels and small businesses that depend on LPG, are also likely to face higher operating costs. Ogra reviews LPG prices every month based on prevailing market conditions and other relevant pricing factors before issuing revised rates through official notifications. Consumers are expected to pay the updated prices from the beginning of August unless further revisions are announced by the regulator.

Released in 2023, the Greta Gerwig-directed film earned more than $1.4 billion globally and became Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing movie. Its success also turned Robbie and Gosling’s versions of Barbie and Ken into major pop-culture figures. Reports say Warner Bros. needs to secure agreements by December 2026 to retain the rights connected to a potential sequel. If the negotiations fail, the rights could return to Mattel, potentially opening the door for the property to be developed with a different studio and creative team.     High-level flooding hits head Qadirabad in the Chenab River

    Following flooding at Head Marala and Khanki, a high-level flood has also occurred at Head Qadirabad in the Chenab River. According to the Flood Forecasting Division in Lahore, the water inflow at Head Qadirabad has risen to 236,000 cusecs. Meanwhile, Head Balloki on the Ravi River is experiencing moderate flooding as water flow has increased to 73,635 cusecs. Low-level flooding continues at Nowshera along the Kabul River, as well as at Kalabagh and Chashma Barrage on the Indus River. In Balochistan’s Sibi Division, high-level flooding was recorded at Hedgogi in the Lehri River, with water flow reaching 95,913 cusecs. The flood situation escalated after India released a large volume of water towards Pakistan following heavy rainfall in occupied Kashmir. The water release has created a risk of major flooding, prompting authorities to issue a high alert for regions including Sialkot and Wazirabad. In a related incident, rescue officials successfully saved five individuals who became stranded in the Chenab River in Sialkot. The workers were returning from work when their boat broke down mid-transit.

    Love marriage turns fatal in Khanewal as father allegedly kills daughter

    KHANEWAL: A young woman was allegedly murdered by her father and other family members in Khanewal after she married a man of her choice, police said. The incident took place in Chak No. 170, Tens-R, within the jurisdiction of Sadar police station. According to the initial information, the victim, identified as Iqra, had married Muhammad Sohail three days before the incident. Police said Iqra’s father, Falak Sher, allegedly went to his daughter’s in-laws’ residence and persuaded her to accompany him, reportedly assuring the family that she would be sent off respectfully. However, after taking her with him, he allegedly killed her with the assistance of his two brothers and son. The incident came to light after Iqra’s husband, Muhammad Sohail, approached the police and filed a complaint. A murder case was subsequently registered against the deceased’s father, Falak Sher, and his three sons. Following the registration of the case, police arrested Falak Sher and initiated further investigation. Authorities are also working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the killing and the alleged involvement of other suspects. Rescue officials shifted Iqra’s body to the district headquarters hospital, where doctors conducted a post-mortem examination to establish the cause and nature of her death. The case has once again raised concerns over violence against women who choose to marry according to their own wishes. Police said further legal action would be taken in light of the investigation and evidence collected from the crime scene.

    Goods transport strike enters fourth day

    The nationwide strike by the All Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance has entered its fourth consecutive day. The continued suspension of freight services has raised concerns about possible disruptions to the supply of essential goods. Transporters say there has been no major breakthrough in talks with the government. They have therefore decided to continue their protest. Goods Transport Alliance President Malik Shehzad Awan said the government must take serious steps to end the deadlock. He said transporters were still willing to negotiate. However, he stressed that talks alone would not be enough. The transporters want clear progress on their demands before ending the strike. The ongoing protest has created uncertainty for businesses and traders. Goods transport vehicles play a key role in moving food, fuel and other essential items between cities. A prolonged strike could affect the movement of supplies. It could also create difficulties for wholesalers, retailers and consumers. There are concerns that shortages in some markets may push up prices. Food items could become more expensive if supplies remain disrupted for an extended period. The transporters launched the protest over rising petroleum prices. They are also opposing the government’s policy of changing petroleum prices on a daily basis. The alliance has demanded action on the issues affecting the transport sector. Transporters argue that frequent changes in fuel prices make it difficult for them to manage operating costs. They have called for serious engagement from the government. They want their concerns to be addressed through negotiations. Malik Shehzad Awan said the transporters had not closed the door to dialogue. However, he maintained that the government must demonstrate meaningful progress. The strike is affecting freight movement at a time when businesses depend heavily on road transport. Goods vehicles are used to supply markets across the country. If the deadlock continues, the impact could become more visible in local markets. Traders may face delays in receiving supplies, while consumers could face higher prices. The transporters have not announced a deadline for ending the strike. They are waiting for further government action and progress on their demands.
