PSX closes higher despite volatile trading

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed a positive trading session on Tuesday, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index gaining 1,116 points to close at 177,083 points.

The index remained volatile throughout the trading session and moved within a range of 1,755 points. It reached an intraday high of 178,768 points before easing from its peak as investors adjusted their positions.

Trading activity remained strong, with approximately 710 million shares changing hands in 25 billion rupees worth of transactions. The high trading volume reflected continued investor participation and active buying and selling across various sectors.

Despite the rise in the benchmark index, the overall market capitalisation declined by around 120 billion rupees, falling to 19,833 billion rupees by the end of the session.

The market’s performance reflected a mixed trend, as investors continued to monitor economic developments and market conditions while actively repositioning their portfolios.

    Sindh announces new school timings

    The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department has issued a revised schedule for government schools across the province, outlining new operating hours for primary, elementary, secondary, and higher secondary institutions. According to an official notification, the updated timings will remain in effect from August until October 31, after which a separate winter schedule will be implemented from November 1 to March 31. Under the summer schedule, single-shift primary schools will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, while on Fridays, classes will end earlier, with schools remaining open from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. For secondary and higher secondary schools, the first shift will run from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. until October 31. The department has also announced revised winter timings. From November 1 to March 31, single-shift primary schools will function from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., while the first shift for secondary and higher secondary schools will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Schools operating in double shifts will also follow updated schedules. Until October 31, the  second shift will run from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. During the winter months, from November 1 to March 31, the second shift will begin at 12:45 p.m. and continue until 5:45 p.m. On Fridays, second-shift schools will operate from 10:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. The revised timings aim to ensure a uniform academic schedule for government schools across Sindh while accommodating seasonal changes in daylight and weather conditions.

    Qul held for Ustad Noor Muhammad Nizami

    Dera Ghazi Khan: A large number of people from all walks of life attended the Qul ceremony of legendary qawwal Ustad Noor Muhammad Nizami, held in Taunsa Sharif. The renowned qawwal, who passed away on 6 August 2026 after battling lung complications since 5 July, was 86. Prayers were offered for the departed soul, and admirers paid tribute to his lifelong contributions to Qawwali and Sufi music. Born in 1940, Ustad Noor Muhammad was the torchbearer of a glorious seven-generation Qawwal legacy, rooted in the soil of Taunsa. His seventh forefather, Mian Ahmad, was brought from Mahaar Sharif to Taunsa by Khawajah Shah Sulaiman Taunsavi of the Chishti Order. For seven generations, his family has devoted their art to the shrine of Taunsa, offering soul-stirring Qawwali in service of the divine. Ustad Noor Muhammad began his musical journey at the tender age of seven, singing at shrine Mahmoodia Taunsa in the presence of Khawajah Nizamudin Taunsvi. His musical education was nurtured by his uncle, Ghulam Sarwar, who guided him in the classical traditions. He was a master of the Kaafi Thaath and Raag Darbari, and his renditions of Ghazal, Kaafi, and Qawwali captivated audiences for decades. From 1970 to 1974, he lent his voice to Radio Pakistan Multan, enriching the airwaves with his timeless artistry. He shared deep bonds with the members of the Sham Chaurasi and Patiala clans, who held him in the highest esteem as a friend and fellow maestro. Ustad Noor Muhammad Nizami leaves behind a grieving family—three sons, Mazhar Ali, Azhar Ali, and Imran Haider, who courageously carry forward his legacy, along with five daughters and a host of grandchildren. His voice may have fallen silent, but his spirit lives on in every note his sons sing and in the hearts of all who were blessed to hear him.

    BEIJING: Beijing was thrown into weather-alert mode on Wednesday as torrential rain linked to Typhoon Dolphin disrupted transport, closed tourist attractions and forced authorities to evacuate people from areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides. The Chinese capital suspended 250 bus routes and ordered trains on 10 subway lines to operate at reduced speeds as heavy rain turned several roads into virtual rivers. Authorities also halted sightseeing boat services and temporarily closed tourist and camping sites, according to state media. The downpour was part of a wider weather system generated by the remnants of Dolphin, the strongest typhoon to hit China this year. Although the storm weakened after making landfall, its vast moisture system continued moving inland, bringing intense rainfall to northern and central parts of the country. Beijing’s Changping district recorded 90.7 millimetres of rain in just one hour after 9am on Wednesday, highlighting the intensity of the storm. Floodwaters left vehicles stranded and disrupted traffic on major roads. Authorities moved residents from mountainous villages, low-lying communities and other locations considered vulnerable to flooding and geological disasters. More than 5,000 elderly people were also evacuated from care facilities as officials stepped up emergency preparations. Construction work across thousands of sites was suspended, while reservoirs were releasing water in advance to create additional capacity for incoming rainfall. The National Meteorological Center renewed an orange rainstorm alert, warning that heavy rain would continue across a broad area of China through Thursday morning. The latest weather emergency has revived concerns over the growing impact of extreme rainfall and flooding in China. Scientists have increasingly linked more intense weather events to climate change, while the 2026 El Niño pattern is also contributing to warmer conditions and stronger tropical systems. For Beijing residents, the immediate priority remains staying away from flooded roads, rivers and mountainous areas as authorities monitor rainfall and prepare for further disruption.

    The Government of Pakistan has announced another reduction in the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel, marking the second consecutive day of relief for consumers. The revised fuel prices will come into effect from August 5, 2026, according to an official notification issued by the Ministry of Energy’s Petroleum Division. The notification stated that the latest revision has been made under the petroleum pricing mechanism recommended by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). The adjustment reflects the government’s ongoing review of petroleum product prices in line with market conditions and regulatory recommendations. Under the new rates, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has been reduced by Rs4.07 per litre, bringing the new price down from Rs389.93 to Rs385.86 per litre. Diesel is widely used in Pakistan’s transportation, agriculture, and industrial sectors, making the reduction significant for businesses and consumers alike. Petrol prices have also been lowered by Rs3.39 per litre. Following the latest cut, petrol will now cost Rs328.56 per litre, compared to the previous price of Rs331.95 per litre. The reduction is expected to provide some financial relief to motorists and households dealing with high transportation costs. This announcement comes just a day after the government had already reduced fuel prices. On the previous day, petrol prices were cut by Rs4.08 per litre, while diesel prices were lowered by Rs2.45 per litre. The back-to-back reductions indicate a continued effort to pass on the benefit of changing petroleum market trends to consumers. Fuel prices play a vital role in Pakistan’s economy because they directly influence transportation expenses, production costs, and inflation.     At least three people lost their lives and three others were injured in rain-related incidents across Punjab as heavy monsoon showers triggered urban flooding, damaged homes, and disrupted daily life in several cities. Authorities have placed emergency services on high alert as the current spell of rain is expected to continue through August 5. According to the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), one man died and another person was injured after a house collapsed in Uch Sharif, Bahawalpur district. In a separate incident, two children drowned in Khushab during the ongoing monsoon rains. Two additional people sustained injuries in separate roof collapse incidents reported in Mandi Bahauddin and Lodhran. The PDMA also confirmed damage to at least one house in Bahawalpur. Officials clarified that nine other deaths reported on the same day were not directly linked to rain or flooding. These incidents included drownings in canals and rivers in Kot Addu, Narowal, and Attock, while four children tragically died of suffocation after becoming trapped inside a parked vehicle in Mianwali. PDMA Director General Saif Anwar Jappa directed deputy commissioners across Punjab to remain on high alert as heavy rainfall is forecast to continue. He said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is personally monitoring the situation and has instructed district administrations, Rescue 1122, Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), and other departments to remain fully prepared for emergencies. Lahore experienced several hours of intense rainfall, leaving many roads and residential areas submerged. Water accumulated up to one-and-a-half feet deep in areas including Township, Kacha Jail Road, Haider Road, and the Quaid-i-Azam Industrial Estate, causing severe traffic congestion and disrupting public movement. According to Wasa Lahore, the city received an average rainfall of 24.8 millimetres, with the highest rainfall recorded at the Wasa Head Office in Gulberg at 66.4mm. Significant rainfall was also reported in Shadipura, Mughalpura, Mannawan, Johar Town, Tajpura, and several other localities. Faisalabad recorded the highest rainfall in Punjab at 103mm, resulting in extensive urban flooding at multiple locations. Water levels reached up to 23 inches in some areas, prompting Wasa teams to continue dewatering operations throughout the day. Heavy rainfall also affected Gujrat and Mandi Bahauddin, where roads were inundated and drainage operations remained underway. In contrast, Jhelum recorded only light rainfall, and officials reported that all waterlogging points had been cleared by the afternoon. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, stay away from electricity poles and damaged buildings, and keep children away from floodwater and fast-flowing canals as monsoon conditions persist across the province.
