Rabbis challenge Zohran Mamdani over Israel rhetor…

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met with Jewish religious leaders at City Hall as rabbis raised concerns about his public criticism of Israel and its potential impact on Jewish New Yorkers.

The closed-door meeting brought together 10 rabbis representing Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist and Orthodox Jewish communities. It was organized by the Mayor’s Office to Combat Antisemitism as part of efforts to strengthen communication with Jewish communities and address concerns about safety and antisemitism.

Several participants urged Mamdani to reconsider the tone and frequency of his comments about Israel. They argued that his criticism of the Israeli government could contribute to feelings of insecurity among Jewish residents, particularly amid continuing concerns about anti-Jewish hate in New York City.

Rabbi Rick Jacobs, president of the Union for Reform Judaism, spoke directly to the mayor during the discussion. Jacobs said he was willing to work with Mamdani’s administration but argued that the mayor’s repeated criticism of Israel was causing harm.

The conversation was reportedly candid but respectful, with participants also discussing practical concerns affecting Jewish communities across the city.

Rabbi Rachel Timoner said Mamdani listened carefully and responded with care during the meeting. Rabbi Jon Leener, meanwhile, encouraged City Hall to focus on issues such as security around synagogues rather than making unnecessary comments about the Israel-related conflict.

The meeting comes as Mamdani’s administration continues to emphasize its commitment to combating antisemitism. The mayor appointed Phylisa Wisdom to lead the Mayor’s Office to Combat Antisemitism in February, describing Jewish safety, respect and belonging as priorities for his administration.

Mamdani has repeatedly distinguished between criticism of Israel’s government and antisemitism. During a May news conference, he said his administration had a responsibility to keep Jewish New Yorkers safe while maintaining his position on Israeli government policies. He also said criticism of a government should not be confused with hatred toward people of a particular faith.

City Hall has also highlighted its broader efforts to address anti-Jewish hate, including increased funding for hate-crime prevention and security initiatives. The administration has said its approach should go beyond responding to incidents and focus on preventing antisemitism.

The latest City Hall meeting reflects the continuing challenge facing Mamdani as he attempts to maintain dialogue with New York’s diverse Jewish communities while remaining outspoken about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

For the rabbis involved, the central issue remains Jewish safety and the atmosphere in New York City. For the mayor, the meeting provides another opportunity to demonstrate that political disagreements over Israel can coexist with his stated commitment to protecting and supporting Jewish New Yorkers.

AJK rejects firing allegations against forces

The Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has strongly rejected allegations that security forces opened fire on protesters or were responsible for civilian deaths during the recent unrest in Rawalakot, describing the claims as false, unverified and part of an organised disinformation campaign. Responding to a report by the BBC on the recent incidents, the AJK government said armed members of the banned Joint Awami Action Committee opened fire on security personnel in Rawalakot, resulting in the deaths and injuries of several officers. It also alleged that the attackers set multiple vehicles on fire during the violence. According to the government, security forces acted only to maintain law and order and enforce the law, insisting that civilians were not deliberately targeted during the operation. The AJK government cited information from the police spokesperson, who said seven security personnel were killed and 143 others were injured in firing allegedly carried out by armed members of the banned Joint Awami Action Committee. It further claimed that the banned group has a history of violent activities. According to the statement, attacks carried out in 2024 and 2025 resulted in the deaths of four security personnel and left hundreds of others injured. The government also said two individuals arrested on July 28 and 29 were under investigation. It alleged that one of the suspects claimed a reward of Rs10 million had been offered for the killing of each Ranger, raising questions about the possible funding of the group. According to the statement, verified videos show armed individuals linked to the banned Joint Awami Action Committee using modern weapons and firing during the unrest. The AJK government maintained that law enforcement agencies carried out their constitutional responsibilities with restraint and professionalism. It insisted that no action was taken against peaceful civilians and that operations were conducted solely to restore public order. The government also categorically denied allegations of indiscriminate firing, the use of snipers or claims that bodies of victims were withheld from their families. It further alleged that the banned Joint Awami Action Committee had previously been involved in blocking roads, stopping or burning cargo vehicles and disrupting the supply of essential goods. According to the statement, law enforcement agencies made efforts to keep roads open and ensure the uninterrupted movement of essential supplies. The AJK government added that the Joint Awami Action Committee has been declared a banned organisation under the Anti-Terrorism Act and said all legal proceedings against the group are being carried out in accordance with the law.

Brad Pitt renews legal fight for Angelina Jolie’…

Brad Pitt is continuing his years-long legal battle with ex-wife Angelina Jolie over the French winery, Château Miraval, with his legal team seeking access to years of Jolie’s financial records. According to court filings reported by PEOPLE, Pitt’s lawyers are asking for documents connected to Jolie’s income, including records from her Hollywood projects. His team argues that the information could be important because Jolie’s financial circumstances may help establish why she decided to sell her interest in the winery. (People.com) The dispute centers on Jolie’s 2021 sale of her stake in Château Miraval to Tenute del Mondo, part of the Stoli Group. Pitt has argued that the sale violated an agreement between the couple that required his approval before either party could sell their interest. (People.com) Jolie has rejected Pitt’s claims and pushed back against his requests for financial information. Her lawyers argue that Pitt has mischaracterized her position and that she was seeking to separate her finances from him when she sold her stake. (People.com) Why Pitt wants the records Pitt’s legal team reportedly believes Jolie’s financial records could help challenge aspects of her account of the sale. His lawyers have sought information concerning her earnings between 2017 and 2021, including movie contracts and professional income. (People.com) The request has become another point of disagreement despite the couple finalizing their divorce in 2024. Jolie’s side has described the demands as excessive. Her attorneys have argued that the records Pitt wants are not necessary to resolve the central questions surrounding the winery transaction. (People.com) A legal dispute Pitt and Jolie purchased Château Miraval in 2008, when they were together, and developed the property into both a family retreat and a wine business. Their relationship later ended in a divorce, but disagreements involving the estate continued after their separation. (courthousenews.com) The winery case has produced legal filings and disputes over documents, communications and testimony. Both sides have continued seeking information they believe supports their positions. Pitt’s renewed request for Jolie’s financial documents does not settle the dispute. Instead, it marks another stage in the discovery process as the legal battle moves forward. Neither side appears ready to abandon its position. Pitt continues to argue that the records could strengthen his case, while Jolie maintains that the requests go too far. The Château Miraval dispute remains an unresolved chapter in the couple’s legal saga.

Faiza Iftikhar’s cryptic post fuels ‘Aik Mohabbat Aur’ speculation

Pakistani drama Aik Mohabbat Aur has gained attention for its star-studded cast and emotionally driven storyline. While the serial has been praised for portraying positive lead characters and meaningful relationships, it has also faced criticism from viewers since its premiere over its execution, editing, and overall presentation. The drama marks the television comeback of celebrated writer Faiza Iftikhar, known for penning several acclaimed projects. It is directed by Farooq Rind, whose previous works have earned praise for their unique storytelling and visual style. Expectations for Aik Mohabbat Aur were naturally high due to the successful collaboration of two respected names in the Pakistani television industry. Despite the anticipation, many viewers have expressed disappointment with the drama’s pacing and editing. Social media users have repeatedly pointed out that certain scenes appear disconnected, making it difficult to distinguish between reality and imagination. Others have argued that the tone of the direction does not fully complement the emotional depth of the script. The criticism took a new turn after Faiza Iftikhar shared a cryptic message on social media, which many fans interpreted as an indirect criticism of the drama’s direction. The writer posted a brief statement that roughly translates to, “In my next life, please don’t make me a director.” Although she did not mention Aik Mohabbat Aur or Farooq Rind by name, the timing of the post led many social media users to believe it was connected to the ongoing discussions surrounding the drama. The message quickly attracted attention, with fans speculating that the writer may not be satisfied with how her script has been translated onto the screen. Viewers soon flooded social media with their own opinions, many agreeing that the show’s execution has not lived up to the strength of its writing. One viewer commented that the director seemed overly focused on repetitive scenes featuring the male lead, saying he was either dancing or constantly looking after children instead of moving the story forward. Another fan criticized the editing, saying it often became confusing because scenes shifted in a way that made it difficult to understand whether events were actually happening or were only part of a character’s thoughts. Some viewers also felt the drama’s visual style appeared heavily influenced by Korean television dramas, arguing that the approach felt unnecessary for the story being told. Despite the criticism, Aik Mohabbat Aur continues to attract a loyal audience, with many praising its performances and emotional themes. The latest social media discussion has further fueled conversations among fans, who are now closely watching whether the drama’s upcoming episodes address the concerns surrounding its direction and editing. Neither Faiza Iftikhar nor Farooq Rind has publicly clarified whether the writer’s social media post was intended as a reference to the drama or its production. Until then, the online debate surrounding Aik Mohabbat Aur continues to grow, keeping the series in the spotlight for both its strengths and its controversies.

Gracie Abrams credits Taylor Swift for a precious …

Gracie Abrams has never hidden her admiration for Taylor Swift, but the singer-songwriter is now revealing that Swift’s influence goes far beyond music. In a recent cover story interview with Rolling Stone, Abrams shared how watching the global pop icon navigate fame and success taught her one of the most valuable lessons of her career: learning to let go of her ego and focus on the work that truly matters. (Rolling Stone) Abrams, who has become one of pop music’s fastest-rising stars, said observing Swift’s professionalism changed the way she approaches her own career. Rather than chasing validation or allowing success to shape her identity, Abrams explained that Swift inspired her to stay grounded, remain curious, and always prioritize creativity over personal pride. According to Abrams, one of the biggest takeaways from spending time around Swift was seeing how someone with extraordinary global success continues to work with humility. She admitted that the experience helped her rethink how ego can sometimes interfere with artistic growth. Instead of trying to prove herself, Abrams now focuses on making honest music that reflects her experiences and emotions. The two artists have developed a close professional relationship over the past few years. Abrams previously joined Swift as an opening act on select dates of The Eras Tour, giving her the opportunity to perform in front of massive stadium crowds around the world. The experience introduced Abrams to millions of new listeners while allowing her to witness firsthand the dedication and discipline that have defined Swift’s career. (Rolling Stone) Abrams also praised Swift for creating an environment where artists feel supported rather than intimidated. She described the Grammy-winning superstar as generous with her advice and encouragement, adding that Swift’s confidence comes from preparation and hard work instead of ego. That mindset, Abrams said, motivated her to approach challenges with greater patience and self-belief. Since releasing her breakthrough projects, Abrams has earned widespread praise for her emotional songwriting and intimate storytelling. Her honest lyrics and understated style have helped her build a loyal fan base, while collaborations with respected artists have further established her place in contemporary pop music. Even as her popularity continues to grow, Abrams says she wants to remain authentic and committed to personal growth. Taylor Swift’s influence, she believes, extends beyond chart-topping songs and sold-out tours. For Abrams, the biggest lesson has been understanding that long-term success is built on consistency, kindness, and a willingness to keep learning. As Abrams continues to evolve as both an artist and songwriter, she credits Swift for helping her develop a healthier perspective on fame. By letting go of ego and embracing humility, the young singer says she has found greater confidence in her own voice. It is a lesson she hopes to carry with her throughout every stage of her career.

Taliban seeks improved ties with Pakistan

The Taliban administration has expressed its desire to reduce tensions and improve relations with Pakistan, saying that continued disputes serve the interests of neither country. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said both sides should work to resolve outstanding issues through dialogue and cooperation. He noted that the closure of border crossings and restrictions faced by Afghan traders have contributed to strained relations and disrupted bilateral trade. Mujahid said the Taliban wants these issues to be addressed to facilitate smoother cross-border movement and strengthen economic ties between the two neighboring countries. He also acknowledged that trade with Pakistan has been affected in recent months, adding that Afghanistan has increased its economic engagement with Iran while pursuing new projects aimed at developing the country’s mineral resources. However, analysts have raised concerns over the transparency of some of the reported mining agreements and questioned whether sufficient oversight and accountability mechanisms are in place. The remarks come at a time when Pakistan and Afghanistan continue to face challenges in bilateral relations, including border management, trade disruptions and broader security concerns.

Why people are belting Disney tunes at smart-glasses wearers

If you suspect someone is secretly filming you with smart glasses, the internet has come up with an unusual defence. People are being told to start singing a Disney song out loud. The idea is not that singing will actually stop the recording itself. Instead, it relies on platforms’ copyright detection systems flagging the music and quietly taking the video down. Most major platforms scan uploaded videos for any copyrighted audio in the background. If a clip contains protected music, it typically gets muted, deleted, or in rarer cases, flagged for legal action. Copyright protection applies to lyrics, composition and melody alike, which means even a rough, off-key rendition can trigger removal. That loophole is exactly what people online are now trying to exploit. This trick has already spread across social media, with people from different countries picking it up. Reactions online have mostly ranged from disbelief to outright frustration at the whole situation. Many users have pointed out the irony that copyrighted music seems to receive stronger legal protection online than personal privacy does. Being filmed without consent, by comparison, often leaves people with far fewer options. Copyright law tends to apply fairly consistently across different countries, but privacy law is a different story entirely. It varies significantly from place to place, leaving many people, especially women, without a reliable way to get unwanted footage removed. The debate has grown louder alongside the rising popularity of smart glasses in everyday life. Meta’s Ray-Ban models have become the clear frontrunner in this fast-growing product category. As more people walk around with cameras built into their glasses, old arguments about filming strangers without consent have resurfaced. The devices have made it easier than ever to record someone without them even realising it. Meta has responded by saying it takes non-consensual filming seriously as a company. It has also made changes to the indicator light that shows when the glasses are actively recording. The company added that it has been removing certain types of content it considers harassment. This includes unsolicited, “pick-up line” style videos aimed at strangers without their consent.
