Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah  has strongly rejected allegations of electoral rigging in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s LA-27 constituency, calling the claims baseless and politically motivated.

Speaking to reporters, Rana Sanaullah said a fake video was being circulated on social media to create the impression that irregularities had taken place during polling in the Muzaffarabad constituency. He alleged that the video was being used as part of a campaign to mislead the public and damage the credibility of the electoral process.

He challenged the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to produce credible evidence if it believed rigging had occurred. He said accusations alone were not enough and urged the party to present proof before making such serious claims.

Rana Sanaullah said polling in LA-27 had been conducted peacefully since the morning. He added that no complaints had been received regarding polling staff or the administration of any polling station during the voting process.

The adviser also questioned whether the PPP had filed any formal complaint with the Election Commission regarding the alleged irregularities. He said the appropriate legal and constitutional forum was available for any political party that wished to challenge the election process.

According to Rana Sanaullah, the PPP had adopted a narrative of election rigging from the very beginning instead of waiting for the electoral process to conclude. He maintained that if the party had evidence, it should submit it to the Election Commission for investigation rather than relying on unverified videos and public statements.

    Bank of Punjab Board approves Up to Rs30bn equity injection by Punjab government

    LAHORE: The Board of Directors of The Bank of Punjab (BOP) has approved a proposal for an equity injection of up to Rs30 billion by the Government of Punjab, a move aimed at strengthening the bank’s capital position and supporting its next phase of expansion. The decision was taken at a board meeting held on August 7, 2026. Under the proposal, the Punjab government will subscribe to ordinary shares to be issued by the bank through a mechanism other than a rights issue. The proposed transaction will not take effect immediately and remains conditional on obtaining all required statutory, corporate, shareholder and regulatory approvals. According to the bank, the planned capital injection is an important step in its broader transformation strategy and will provide additional financial capacity to support sustainable growth across its key business segments. Share issuance price The ordinary shares will initially be issued at Rs38.20 per share. However, if the market price of BOP shares is higher than this amount at the time of issuance, the shares will be issued at the prevailing market price plus a premium of 5 percent. As a result, Rs38.20 will serve as the minimum or floor price for the proposed share issuance. The transaction is expected to reinforce the bank’s capital base and provide greater flexibility to manage balance-sheet expansion while maintaining prudent financial and risk-management standards. BOP expands its market presence The Bank of Punjab has undergone significant changes in recent years, with the institution expanding its balance sheet, improving financial performance and strengthening its position across several sectors of Pakistan’s economy. The bank has developed a strong presence in areas including small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) financing, agricultural lending, affordable housing, digital banking and credit cards. It has also increased its focus on women’s participation and leadership in banking and financial services. BOP is further expanding its activities in commercial and corporate banking, particularly in areas linked to export-oriented businesses. The bank said these business segments have positioned it as an important participant in supporting economic activity, employment creation and financial inclusion across the country. Capital requirements rise with expansion Despite the bank’s growth, the rapid expansion of its operations has increased pressure on its existing capital base. BOP said its capital position has historically remained relatively limited compared with the size of its operations and the growth opportunities available to the institution. The proposed Rs30 billion injection is therefore expected to provide the bank with additional capacity to expand its core businesses while maintaining financial resilience. The additional capital could also enable BOP to increase its low-cost deposit base and grow lending operations without facing the same level of capital constraints. The bank said strengthening its capital position would allow it to pursue growth while maintaining a balanced and prudent approach to balance-sheet management. Strong financial performance The proposed capital injection comes as BOP continues to report strong underlying financial performance. During 2025, the bank recorded revenue growth of around 29 percent, while its earnings increased by more than 40 percent year on year. The bank also witnessed significant appreciation in the value of its shares during the period. According to the bank, the proposed capital raise should therefore be viewed primarily as growth capital rather than a measure aimed at addressing immediate financial weakness. The additional equity is expected to provide the financial foundation required for BOP to continue expanding its operations and investing in new business opportunities. International expansion in focus Another important component of the bank’s future strategy is its international expansion. The capital injection is expected to support the next phase of BOP’s growth, including an international venture that has recently received approval from the State Bank of Pakistan. The move could provide the bank with an opportunity to broaden its geographical footprint and develop new sources of business and revenue. The appeals court’s ruling leaves in place an earlier decision issued on June 8, when a lower court declared the $100,000 H-1B visa fee unlawful. That court concluded that Congress had never granted the executive branch the authority to impose a charge of that magnitude, describing it as a tax that exceeded the administration’s legal powers. President Donald Trump introduced the fee increase through an executive order issued last year, arguing that the H-1B visa program had been widely used by companies to replace American workers with lower-paid foreign professionals. The administration maintained that the significantly higher fee would discourage misuse of the program and encourage employers to prioritize hiring US workers. Critics, however, argued that the measure would severely disrupt industries that rely on highly skilled international talent, particularly the technology, healthcare and engineering sectors. Under current immigration rules, the United States issues 65,000 H-1B visas annually, along with an additional 20,000 visas for applicants holding advanced academic degrees from US institutions. The visas are generally granted for periods ranging from three to six years. Before Trump’s proposed increase, employers typically paid between $2,000 and $5,000 in government filing fees for an H-1B visa, depending on the size of the company and other applicable charges. The proposed $100,000 fee would not have applied to foreign nationals already in the United States on student visas who later transitioned to H-1B status. The latest court ruling represents another significant legal obstacle for the Trump administration’s immigration agenda and ensures that the dramatic fee increase will remain suspended while the broader legal battle continues.

    PTI rejects AJK polls, demands fresh elections

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has rejected the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. The party has described the July 27 polls as unacceptable and demanded a judicial inquiry into the violence reported in the region. PTI leaders also called for the cancellation of the remaining two phases of the elections. They demanded fresh elections across AJK in a single phase under an independent and impartial election commission. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan appeared alongside former AJK prime minister Sardar Qayyum Niazi. The leaders strongly criticised the violence reported in Rawalakot, Mirpur and other areas. Multiple reports of deaths and injuries have emerged since Monday. Videos showing unrest have also circulated on social media, although the reported casualties could not be independently verified. Both security agencies and the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) have reported casualties during clashes. Niazi said Kashmiris were facing what he described as unprecedented oppression. He said the situation was particularly concerning because Kashmiris had historically supported the cause of accession to Pakistan. He claimed protesters had attempted to resolve their grievances through negotiations. According to him, the situation deteriorated after their demands were not addressed. Niazi maintained that the protesters were peaceful. He questioned the use of force against them and urged authorities to avoid further escalation. He also criticised the decision to conduct the AJK elections in three phases. Niazi argued that the region has a relatively small population and questioned why the elections could not have been held on a single day. He said the ongoing violence was damaging Pakistan’s position on the Kashmir issue. According to him, AJK is considered an important base for the wider Kashmir cause. Niazi warned that the unrest could send a negative message internationally. He said Pakistan had previously highlighted alleged human rights violations in Indian-administered Kashmir at international forums. He argued that developments in AJK could make it difficult for Pakistan to effectively present its position on Kashmir before the international community. The former AJK prime minister also rejected the portrayal of protesters as terrorists. He said the same people had previously been engaging with authorities through negotiations. Niazi called for dialogue and urged the government to avoid further use of force. He proposed the establishment of a national government in AJK until conditions returned to normal. He said free and transparent elections should then be held across the region, with PTI participating in the process. Gohar also strongly criticised the July 27 elections. He alleged that the polls had failed to reflect the will of the people. The PTI chairman said using force to silence protesters could not resolve political and public grievances. He argued that listening to citizens was a fundamental part of democracy. Gohar criticised both the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for turning the election dispute into a political contest. He said political parties should focus on the violence and reported casualties rather than exchanging allegations over electoral gains and losses. The PTI leader also pointed to the low voter turnout. He claimed that the limited participation represented public dissatisfaction with the existing political system. Gohar said the Kashmir issue was extremely sensitive and should not be used for political interests. He urged all stakeholders to act responsibly and resolve the crisis through dialogue. PTI has now formally demanded a judicial investigation into the reported violence. The party also wants the remaining election phases, scheduled for August 2 and August 10, cancelled. The party has further called for the resignation of the AJK government and the formation of a national government to manage the situation. PTI wants fresh elections to be held across AJK in a single phase. It has called for the process to be conducted under the supervision of an independent and impartial election commission. The party says dialogue should be prioritised to address public grievances and restore normalcy before a fresh electoral process begins.
