Punjab cotton crop in satisfactory shape as rice cultivation surpasses target

LAHORE: The cotton crop in Punjab is currently showing a generally satisfactory condition, while rice cultivation in the province has exceeded the government’s target by a significant margin, with growers sowing the crop over more than six million acres against the planned five million acres. The latest assessment was shared at a high-level meeting held in Multan on Saturday to review the progress of major standing crops, agricultural extension services and measures aimed at strengthening farming activity across Punjab. The meeting was chaired by Additional Chief Secretary Punjab Iftikhar Ali Sahoo and brought together senior officials from the Agriculture and Irrigation departments, representatives of the farming community and experts from the agricultural sector. Among those attending were Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Asif Ali, Special Secretary Agriculture South Punjab Sarfraz Hussain Magsi, Agriculture Department Directors General Abdul Hameed, Naveed Asmat Kahloon, Dr Aamir Rasool and Dr Sajid-ur-Rehman, as well as Kissan Ittehad President Khalid Mahmood Khokhar, Syed Hassan Raza and Dr Muhammad Iqbal Bandesha. Additional Secretary Task Force Shabbir Ahmed Khan, Director General Crop Reporting Dr Abdul Qayyum and Agriculture Department Consultant Dr Muhammad Anjum Ali participated in the meeting through a video link. Officials briefed the meeting on the condition of major crops and the progress of field-level initiatives designed to assist farmers. Cotton remained a major focus of the discussion because of its importance to Pakistan’s textile-based economy and its contribution to agricultural incomes. The participants were informed that the cotton crop across Punjab was in a satisfactory condition. However, officials stressed the need for continued field monitoring and timely technical support to protect the crop from potential threats during its critical growth stages. Cotton is considered one of Pakistan’s most important cash crops and serves as a major source of raw material for the country’s textile industry. Its performance has a direct bearing on farmers, ginners, textile manufacturers and export-oriented businesses. In recent years, cotton production has faced challenges from changing weather patterns, pest attacks, input costs and competition from alternative crops. Sahoo emphasised that the government was giving priority to agricultural development and the economic well-being of farmers. He directed agriculture officials and field formations to maintain regular contact with growers and ensure that technical advice reached farmers in a timely manner. He said the strategy prepared for the revival and strengthening of cotton cultivation should be implemented in letter and spirit. Officials were also asked to remain active in the field and assist growers in dealing with crop-related issues. Highlighting cotton’s wider economic significance, the additional chief secretary said the country’s economy and textile sector could not be viewed separately from the performance of the cotton crop. He stressed the need for coordinated efforts to improve productivity and strengthen the position of cotton growers. The meeting also reviewed the progress of rice cultivation. According to the officials, rice had already been planted over more than six million acres in Punjab, exceeding the season’s target of five million acres. Sahoo directed agricultural authorities to intensify technical guidance for rice growers, particularly to help them improve productivity, maintain crop quality and adopt better farming practices. He called for greater involvement of regional agricultural forums and professional experts in addressing issues faced by farmers at the local level. Such platforms, he said, should use their technical expertise to help improve agricultural performance and provide practical solutions to growers. The additional chief secretary also appreciated the efforts of Agriculture Department field teams for their role in supporting farmers and monitoring crop conditions across the province. Later, Sahoo visited the Model Agriculture Mall in Multan to inspect arrangements for the provision of agricultural inputs to farmers. During the visit, he reviewed the availability of fertilisers and other essential inputs and sought information from officials regarding stocks and farmer demand. He directed the relevant authorities to ensure uninterrupted availability of fertiliser at the facility so that farmers did not face shortages during the ongoing crop season. Officials said crop conditions would continue to be monitored closely in the coming weeks. With rice cultivation entering the final stages of the transplantation period and cotton moving into an important phase of its growth cycle, timely field intervention and availability of agricultural inputs would remain crucial to determining overall crop performance. The government is expected to maintain its focus on farmer guidance, crop monitoring and input availability as the province moves further into the agricultural season.

The prime minister made the remarks during a meeting in Islamabad with a nine-member JICA delegation led by its President, Dr Tanaka Akihiko. Discussing support for businesses, the prime minister said reforms at the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) had strengthened the institution. He expressed hope that enhanced cooperation with JICA would help improve SME productivity, encourage entrepreneurship and boost Pakistan’s exports. During the meeting, Shehbaz also conveyed condolences over the recent earthquake in Japan. Dr Tanaka thanked the prime minister for his message of sympathy and appreciated the warm hospitality extended to the Japanese delegation during its visit. The JICA president reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Pakistan in healthcare, education, urban and rural development, industrial growth and technical training. Former Mexican governor formally charged over 2014 disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa students

A Mexican judge has ruled that prosecutors presented sufficient evidence to formally charge Ángel Aguirre, the former governor of Guerrero state, with forced disappearance and obstruction of justice in connection with the 2014 vanishing of 43 students. Aguirre, who was arrested following new testimony gathered by a federal investigative unit, is accused of ordering the destruction of surveillance camera recordings that could have clarified the events surrounding the abduction of students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Rural Teachers’ College in Iguala. Defence counsel denied all allegations, asserting that Aguirre was attending a high-level meeting at the time the recordings were allegedly transferred to him. The judge ordered that Aguirre remain held in a maximum-security prison pending trial. The indictment represents one of the most prominent legal developments in the case since the 2022 arrest of former federal Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam. Of the 43 trainees abducted on 26 September 2014 after commandeering buses for a protest, the remains of only three have been positively identified.

Rakhi Sawant says She would love to join Pakistani reality show Tamasha

Indian reality television personality Rakhi Sawant recently expressed her desire to become part of Pakistan’s popular reality show *Tamasha*, saying that if the programme had been filmed in Dubai, she would have loved to participate and “make the whole world go mad.” Her comments were discussed during the podcast where host Adnan Siddiqui was asked whether he could handle Sawant if she joined the show. Siddiqui, who serves as the host of *Tamasha* and is known as the show’s “Badshah Salamat”, admitted that bringing Sawant onto the Pakistani programme would be difficult under current circumstances. However, he acknowledged that her participation would certainly make the show highly entertaining. Siddiqui also revealed that Sawant’s admiration for *Tamasha* was not an isolated incident. According to him, the reality show has developed a following among Indian viewers since its first season, with audiences across the border regularly commenting on the programme. The actor recalled receiving a phone call from renowned Indian comedian Johnny Lever, who praised his work on the show. Siddiqui remembered Lever telling him that he was doing a great job, a compliment he described as particularly meaningful. For Siddiqui, the growing interest in *Tamasha* from Indian audiences is an important achievement, especially now that the programme has completed five seasons. He said that seeing viewers from India discuss and appreciate the show makes the entire team proud. He recalled reading one Indian viewer’s comment that described the programme’s title as perfectly suited to the events inside the house. The viewer reportedly wrote that the contestants were truly creating a “spectacle” and said they had become interested in watching all the previous seasons after discovering the show. *Tamasha* follows a reality television format that has gained worldwide popularity through the Dutch programme *Big Brother*. The format has been adapted in numerous countries, including India, where the show is known as *Bigg Boss* and is hosted by Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. Earlier in the podcast, Rehman pointed out that some viewers compare Siddiqui’s hosting style with Khan’s, particularly when he reprimands contestants. Siddiqui responded light-heartedly, saying there was nothing wrong with the comparison because Khan is a major actor and he would not mind being compared with him. Discussing the scale of *Tamasha*, Siddiqui said the production team had achieved considerable success despite operating with fewer resources than many international reality shows. He explained that the team tries to improve and expand the programme with every new season. Siddiqui acknowledged that international versions often have larger teams, bigger budgets and more established production systems. Nevertheless, he argued that *Tamasha* should not be dismissed when compared with such programmes. He suggested that if an international reality show deserved a rating of 20, *Tamasha* could reasonably be considered an 18, reflecting the progress made by its team despite financial and logistical limitations. The growing attention from Indian audiences, along with Sawant’s comments, highlights the cross-border popularity that *Tamasha* has managed to develop over the years.

Spokane wildfires destroy 700 homes, force 64,000 to flee

SPOKANE: Devastating wildfires sweeping across the outskirts of Spokane, Washington, have destroyed more than 700 buildings, displaced 64,000 residents, and prompted fears that fatalities may be discovered as emergency crews struggle to contain the fast-moving infernos. The cluster of three major wildfires, which erupted over the weekend, has become the highest firefighting priority in the United States, with more than 1,100 firefighters deployed to battle the flames. Despite their efforts, officials confirmed that none of the fires had been contained by Monday. The blazes have scorched over 8,000 acres (3,200 hectares) on the northern edge of Spokane, Washington’s second-largest city, located near the Idaho border. Thick smoke has blanketed the region, reducing visibility and worsening air quality across large parts of the Pacific Northwest. Dramatic aerial footage showed firefighting aircraft repeatedly dropping fire retardant over forests as towering flames raced toward residential neighborhoods. Entire communities have been reduced to ashes, with officials warning that another 400 structures may also have been damaged or destroyed. For many families, the evacuation came with little warning. Among them was Kami Fehlig, who fled her home with her husband, two daughters and family dog after watching flames leap across the Spokane River and race toward their neighborhood. “We knew we had to leave immediately,” she recalled. “We grabbed our wedding album, baby books, pet supplies and whatever we could carry before the power went out.” Hours later, the family learned that their home and surrounding neighborhood had been completely destroyed. Authorities said thousands more residents remain under mandatory evacuation orders as shifting winds continue to threaten additional communities. Emergency officials also warned that the full scale of the disaster may not yet be known. Several people have been reported missing, while search teams have been unable to access some of the hardest-hit areas because of intense fire activity. “There is a high probability that fatalities will be found once crews can safely enter devastated neighborhoods,” incident command spokesperson Benjamin Cossel said. The cause of the fires remains under investigation. The Spokane fires are part of an exceptionally severe wildfire season gripping the Pacific Northwest. Washington alone is battling 15 major wildfires, with more than 250,000 acres already burned. Across the United States, officials have recorded over 44,700 wildfires so far this year, consuming nearly 5.2 million acres, making it one of the worst fire seasons in recent years. Neighboring British Columbia, Canada, is also experiencing intense wildfire activity fueled by record drought conditions and extreme heat. Fire managers hope a brief period of cooler temperatures and lighter winds will help firefighters make progress before another round of scorching weather arrives later this week. Scientists say increasingly frequent and intense wildfire seasons across North America and Europe are being driven by prolonged drought, rising temperatures and other effects linked to human-caused climate change, leaving communities facing ever-growing environmental and economic challenges.

Irina Shayk finds new boyfriend after parting ways…

Supermodel Irina Shayk appears to be embracing a new chapter in her love life. Nearly three years after her brief romance with former NFL star Tom Brady ended, the Russian model is reportedly dating NBA player Devin Booker. According to multiple reports, the relationship is still in its early stages, but those close to the pair say the connection is growing stronger with each passing week.  Sources claim Shayk and Booker were introduced through mutual friends several months ago. Since then, they have been spending time together whenever their busy schedules allow. With Booker preparing for the upcoming NBA season, the two are reportedly making the most of the summer, enjoying low-key outings and getting to know each other away from the public eye.  Romance rumors intensified after the pair were spotted together in the Hamptons over the weekend. Witnesses reportedly saw them leaving a café before later attending a social gathering in Montauk. While neither Shayk nor Booker has confirmed the relationship publicly, insiders say the model is “very into him” and may even attend some of his basketball games once the season begins.  The reported romance comes after Shayk’s short-lived relationship with Tom Brady, which first made headlines in the summer of 2023. The pair dated for a few months before quietly going their separate ways. At the time, sources described the split as amicable, saying the relationship had simply “fizzled out” without any drama or hard feelings.  Before Brady, Shayk was in a long-term relationship with actor Bradley Cooper, with whom she shares daughter Lea De Seine. Despite ending their romance in 2019, the former couple have maintained a friendly co-parenting relationship and have often been praised for putting their daughter first.  Booker, meanwhile, was previously in a high-profile relationship with reality star Kendall Jenner. The NBA standout has largely kept his personal life private since their split, making the reported romance with Shayk one of his first public dating stories in recent years.  Although neither Shayk nor Booker has addressed the reports directly, those close to the couple say they are enjoying the early stages of their relationship without rushing into the spotlight. For now, the pair seem content to let their romance develop naturally, proving that sometimes the best relationships begin quietly before capturing the world’s attention.
