Russia, COMSTECH seek stronger cooperation in scie…

Russia and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) have discussed new opportunities to expand collaboration in science, technology and higher education.

Russian Ambassador Albert P. Khorev received a COMSTECH delegation on August 12. The delegation was led by COMSTECH Coordinator General Professor Dr M. Iqbal Choudhary.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between Russia and COMSTECH, particularly in areas of scientific research and academic development. Russia participates in the OIC as an observer state.

Professor Iqbal Choudhary highlighted existing cooperation between COMSTECH and Russian institutions. He specifically mentioned collaboration with Kazan Federal University and the Russian Association of Earthquake Engineering and Protection against Natural and Man-Made Hazards.

The participants identified considerable potential for expanding academic links between the two sides. They discussed stronger partnerships between universities, increased scholarship opportunities and joint research projects in fundamental sciences.

Both sides also stressed the need to speed up implementation of initiatives previously agreed upon under their bilateral working mechanism.

These initiatives were discussed during the first meeting of the Working Group on Cooperation between COMSTECH and the Russian Federation in science, technology and higher education. The meeting was held in Kazan on May 13, 2026, on the sidelines of the international economic forum Russia–Islamic World: KazanForum.

Ambassador Khorev reaffirmed Moscow’s interest in expanding its engagement with the OIC and Muslim-majority countries. He also highlighted the importance of cooperation with Pakistan.

The participants noted that stronger scientific and academic links between Russia and COMSTECH could also contribute to closer Russia-Pakistan relations, particularly through education, research and technological cooperation.

The two sides agreed to maintain regular communication and provide necessary support for implementing joint initiatives and projects.

French luxury group Kering, which owns jewellery brands Pomellato and Boucheron, reported particularly strong results earlier this year. The company announced in April that sales from its new jewellery division increased 22% on a comparable basis during the first quarter, outperforming all of its other business segments. The figures highlighted jewellery’s growing importance as a revenue driver. Luxury brand Hermès has also experienced rapid growth in jewellery. Analysts at investment firm Vontobel estimate that the company’s jewellery business has achieved a compound annual growth rate of nearly 30% since 2019, although they note that the division still represents a relatively small part of Hermès’ overall business. Industry experts believe this trend reflects broader changes in consumer behaviour. Luxury analyst Madjo said, “Even at soft luxury players like Hermes, Prada, Gucci, everybody’s putting a bit more emphasis on jewellery because that’s where the growth is coming from right now. So you want to be exposed to that.” At the same time, traditional luxury categories such as handbags and shoes are facing increasing pressure. Hermès, whose reputation has long been built around its highly exclusive Birkin bags, recently saw its shares fall about 10% after reporting weaker-than-expected first-quarter growth. The results prompted questions about whether the company’s scarcity-based business model can continue delivering the same level of success. Claudia D’Arpizio, senior partner at consultancy Bain & Company, said changing consumer tastes are reshaping the luxury market. “Bags and shoes are facing meaningful headwinds, as both have experienced significant softening in consumer desirability, particularly among younger audiences,” she said. She added that these categories have traditionally generated strong revenues and profit margins, but post-pandemic market conditions have made them far more challenging. According to D’Arpizio, luxury brands must now develop new strategies to remain competitive, with jewellery increasingly emerging as one of the industry’s most promising growth opportunities.

    Dhabeji power fault puts Karachi water supply at r…

    Karachi’s water supply has come under fresh pressure after a power disruption at the Dhabeji Pumping Station affected the operation of three pumps. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) warned on Sunday that several areas of the city could experience a temporary reduction in water supply following the disruption. According to KWSC, the power failure occurred around 8:45am in the third phase of the Dhabeji Pumping Station. The affected section remained without electricity, forcing three pumps to stop working. The disruption is expected to reduce Karachi’s water supply by around 75 million gallons per day. Areas that could face lower water pressure or interruptions include North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi and Scheme 33. KWSC said it was coordinating with K-Electric to restore the electricity supply and bring the affected pumps back online. Officials said normal water distribution would resume as soon as the pumps were operational again. However, K-Electric disputed the cause of the outage. The power utility said the issue was an internal fault in KDA Pumping Feeder 2, which supplies electricity to the Dhabeji station, and was not caused by a problem with its wider distribution network. K-Electric said electricity to 19 of the station’s 22 pumping motors remained available. Its technical team was also in contact with KWSC to help resolve the problem. The latest disruption comes as Karachi is already struggling with recurring water shortages and distribution problems. KWSC officials have previously raised concerns over damage to major water pipelines during ongoing development and construction activities. Officials said excavation work linked to the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit project and the K-IV water project has repeatedly damaged pipelines along University Road. The repeated damage has disrupted the city’s water distribution network and affected supplies to several neighbourhoods.

    Three killed in Seattle food festival shooting

    SEATTLE: Three people were killed and four others, including a toddler, were wounded after gunfire erupted at a food festival in downtown Seattle, US authorities said. The shooting took place on Sunday evening at Seattle Center, where the annual Bite of Seattle food festival was being held. Police said one suspect was taken into custody following the incident. Investigators believe another person may have been involved and were searching for the second suspect. Seattle Police Department Assistant Chief Tyrone Davis said one of the injured victims later died in hospital. The death raised the confirmed toll to three. The four surviving victims were receiving medical treatment and were reported to be in stable condition. Witnesses said several gunshots were heard at around 6pm local time. The sound of gunfire caused panic at the busy festival, which had attracted visitors for food and entertainment. Police quickly responded to the scene and secured the area. Officers established a perimeter while emergency teams treated the injured and investigators began collecting evidence. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the victims. The circumstances that led to the shooting also remain under investigation. Officials are working to determine whether the incident was targeted or resulted from another dispute. Police have not yet provided a clear motive. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson condemned the shooting as a horrific act of violence. She expressed sympathy for the victims, their families and others affected by the incident.     Faisalabad unveils smart transport app

The mobile app will provide real-time tracking of public transport vehicles. Passengers will be able to see the live location of government buses, metro buses, electric buses and registered urban Hiace vehicles. The feature will help commuters know exactly when a vehicle is arriving, reducing long waiting times and making travel more convenient. Another important feature of the application is its smart route-planning system. Users will simply enter their destination, and the app will suggest the best travel route. It will also tell passengers which buses to board, where they need to change routes and the estimated arrival time of connecting services. Officials believe this feature will especially benefit students, office workers and first-time travellers who are unfamiliar with city routes. Authorities said the application has been developed for public convenience and will be available free of cost. Commuters will not have to pay any fee to use the service. However, transport operators will have to complete registration and comply with the required regulations before joining the digital platform. The administration also plans to introduce digital registration for public transport vehicles. The registration system will be linked with the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), allowing authorities to maintain accurate transport records and improve monitoring of public transport services. Officials expect the registration process for transport operators to begin within the next 15 days to one month, followed by the official launch of the application. In addition to the digital transport platform, the administration is working on establishing an electric vehicle battery-swapping network. The proposed system will allow EV users to replace discharged batteries with fully charged ones in a short time instead of waiting for vehicles to recharge. Officials believe this will encourage the adoption of electric vehicles and support cleaner, more sustainable transportation in the city.
