Sahibzada Farhan’s fifty in vain as Kandy Ro…

Sahibzada Farhan’s explosive half-century went in vain as Kandy Royals secured a 43-run victory over Dambulla Sixers in the sixth fixture of the Lanka Premier League 2026 at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Tuesday. Chasing 195, Dambulla Sixers could only muster 151-8 despite a solid start.

Skipper Dinesh Chandimal and Farhan, who came in as an impact substitute, added 57 runs in the first five overs, with Farhan scoring the bulk of the runs. Chandimal departed after scoring 12, but Sixers maintained the momentum as Farhan raised his half-century. He eventually was caught by Shaheen Afridi in the 11th over after scoring 74 off 45 balls, hitting four sixes and seven fours. His wicket sparked a collapse that Dambulla Sixers could not recover from, losing wickets in clusters. Nuwan Thushara starred with the ball, picking up four wickets to help restrict the Sixers to 151 in 20 overs.

Earlier, Lahiru Udara’s half-century helped Kandy Royals post a strong total of 194-6 in 20 overs. After an early loss, Kusal Perera and Udara crafted a 55-run stand for the second-wicket partnership. Perera made 25 off 20 balls, hitting two fours and a six, while Udara top-scored with 51 from 34 balls, striking two sixes and five boundaries. Moeen Ali and Wanindu Hasaranga chipped in with 24 and 29 respectively, while veteran batter Angelo Matthews provided the innings’ late impetus with an unbeaten 29 off 19 balls, hitting four boundaries to take the Royals’ total near the 200-run mark.

For Dambulla Sixers, Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled an economical spell, giving away 20 runs in his four overs while picking up two crucial wickets. Pacer Mohammad Wasim also took one wicket but remained expensive, conceding 42 runs in his four overs.

The victory marked a strong performance for Kandy Royals, who will look to build on this momentum as the tournament progresses. For Dambulla Sixers, the loss highlighted their reliance on Farhan’s batting and the need for greater contributions from the middle order. Despite the defeat, Farhan’s innings was a standout performance, showcasing his ability to take on the opposition’s bowling attack. The tournament continues to provide exciting cricketing action, with fans eagerly awaiting the next fixtures as teams battle for supremacy in the Lanka Premier League. The Royals’ win has boosted their position in the standings, while the Sixers will need to regroup quickly to stay competitive in the tournament.

Naqvi: ‘Cockroach’ youth can overturn …

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has called for the creation of new administrative units and provinces, saying Pakistan’s current governance system has failed and requires fundamental reforms to meet the country’s future needs. Speaking at Pakistan’s first Economic Summit in Islamabad, Naqvi said the existing administrative structure could no longer effectively address the country’s growing challenges. He stressed that establishing new administrative units was essential for improving governance and ensuring sustainable development. “The system we are living under has collapsed,” he said. “New administrative units or provinces are the only way forward.” Naqvi said Pakistan would continue facing the same problems even a decade from now unless major structural reforms were introduced. He urged policymakers to focus on fixing the country’s basic governance framework instead of relying on temporary solutions. The interior minister also highlighted the concerns of Pakistan’s youth. He said young people are no longer satisfied with receiving laptops, scholarships or financial assistance alone. Instead, they want employment opportunities based on merit and a transparent system that guarantees fairness. He warned that growing frustration among young people should not be ignored. Referring to the younger generation, he said if they unite, they could bring significant political and social change. Naqvi also pointed to Pakistan’s financial challenges, saying the country continues to rely heavily on borrowing while its debt burden keeps increasing. He argued that meaningful economic improvement would remain difficult unless the overall governance system was reset. He praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s commitment to work, saying the prime minister spends long hours addressing national issues. However, he added that even working 18 hours a day would not be enough if the country’s underlying system remained unchanged. The interior minister said political parties must set aside their differences and work together to introduce reforms. He urged all major stakeholders, including the government and opposition, to sit together and develop a long-term national strategy. Later, while speaking informally with journalists, Naqvi said the country’s institutions and political leadership must improve the system if Pakistan is to achieve lasting progress. He said the efforts of the military leadership alone would not be sufficient without governance reforms. He also said all political parties, including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), should participate in efforts to improve the country’s governance structure. Responding to a question about the PTI founder, Naqvi said the matter would be decided by the courts. He also dismissed speculation about becoming foreign minister, saying he would continue serving as interior minister.

Imran Khan marks three years in jail

Former prime Minister Imran Khan has completed three years in prison after his arrest in the Toshakhana case. He was taken into custody on August 5, 2023, shortly after a court convicted him in the case. Following his arrest, he was shifted from his residence in Zaman Park, Lahore, to District Jail Attock under strict security arrangements. Imran Khan remained at Attock Jail for one month and 21 days. During that period, security around the prison was tightened, while legal proceedings related to multiple cases against him continued in different courts. On September 26, 2023, the Islamabad High Court ordered his transfer from Attock Jail to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Since then, he has remained detained at the facility, where he continues to face legal proceedings in several cases. Bangladesh hands ODI captaincy to Litton Das, drops Mehidy

Bangladesh has a new face leading its One-day International side. Litton Das has officially taken over ODI captaincy duties from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board confirming the change on Wednesday. The decision comes not long after Bangladesh suffered a series defeat against Zimbabwe earlier this month. It is worth noting that the shift only affects the ODI format. Najmul Hossain will keep his position as Test captain, so the two roles remain separate. Litton was already Bangladesh’s T20 captain before this appointment. With this move, he now leads two of the three formats, while the board continues its approach of splitting captaincy responsibilities. Board president Tamim Iqbal explained that having separate leaders for white-ball and red-ball cricket was part of preparations for next year’s ODI World Cup, which South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe will jointly host. Tamim spoke positively about Mehidy’s time as captain, highlighting his strong results across several series. Still, he pointed to a dip in Mehidy’s batting form as the main reason behind the change. He mentioned having a conversation with Mehidy directly and said the outgoing captain was understanding of the board’s decision. Mehidy stepped into the ODI captaincy role about a year ago, replacing Najmul, who had briefly captained the team in all three formats. During his tenure, Bangladesh secured ten wins out of twenty ODIs. The early stretch of his captaincy was difficult, with the team losing several matches in a row. Things improved significantly afterward, as Bangladesh strung together four consecutive series wins at home against the West Indies, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Australia. That momentum slowed following the away series loss to Zimbabwe. This is not new territory for Litton either. He previously captained Bangladesh in seven ODIs, a stretch that included a memorable series win over India in 2022. Tamim also addressed questions surrounding Bangladesh’s proposed home series against India in September. He said he remained hopeful the tour would proceed, describing Bangladesh as a safe environment for visiting teams. He added that talks with India’s cricket board had been going well and that more clarity was expected soon. This uncertainty follows an earlier standoff, when Bangladesh’s previous board opted out of playing in India during this year’s T20 World Cup due to security concerns tied to a Bangladeshi bowler’s IPL release. Tamim acknowledged that some decisions were beyond his control, since government involvement plays a role too, but said an update should come soon.

Alexandrova shocks world No. 1 Sabalenka in Toronto

TORONTO: Russian tennis player Ekaterina Alexandrova produced a major upset at the WTA Toronto Masters by defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round. The 16th-seeded Alexandrova secured a hard-fought 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4 victory over the four-time Grand Slam champion in a match lasting two hours and 29 minutes. The win booked Alexandrova’s place in the quarter-finals and improved her career record against Sabalenka to 5-5. Sabalenka made a strong start, breaking Alexandrova early in the opening set to take a 2-0 lead. However, the Russian responded by winning four consecutive games. The set remained closely contested, with both players exchanging breaks late in the set. Alexandrova eventually dominated the tie-break and took the opening set 7-6. Sabalenka fought back in the second set. She secured a crucial break to move 4-3 ahead before holding her next two service games to level the match. The deciding set again featured intense rallies and momentum shifts. Alexandrova broke Sabalenka early to establish a 3-1 advantage. Sabalenka managed to recover one break, but Alexandrova remained composed under pressure. The Russian created two match points in the 10th game after a series of errors from the top seed. Sabalenka saved the first two opportunities with a service winner and an ace. However, she then sent a backhand beyond the baseline before committing her sixth double fault of the match, handing Alexandrova victory. Alexandrova said she entered the contest without any particular expectations because she knew defeating Sabalenka would be extremely difficult. She explained that she deliberately played aggressively and took risks because she believed it was the best way to create opportunities against the powerful Belarusian. The victory sends Alexandrova into the Toronto quarter-finals, where she will face either American eighth seed Amanda Anisimova or Ukraine’s ninth seed Elina Svitolina.
