A 44-year-old man has been arrested following a shooting incident outside York Mosque and Islamic Centre in the city of York, North Yorkshire, England. Police confirmed that no one was injured in the incident, while an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is underway.

According to British media reports, the firing took place outside the mosque located on Bull Lane in York on Thursday. Following the incident, North Yorkshire Police arrested a local white British man in connection with the alleged shooting.

Police officials said the weapon used in the incident is believed to have been an air weapon, similar to an air gun. Authorities traced the suspect after he reportedly left the scene in a silver-coloured vehicle and later took him into custody for questioning.

The suspect remains in police custody as officers continue their investigation. Police have not yet confirmed the motive behind the incident and stated that it would be too early to draw conclusions about the reasons behind the concerning event.

North Yorkshire Police assured the Muslim community in York that every effort is being made to establish the full circumstances and identify the factors that led to the incident. Authorities said additional patrols will continue in the area around the mosque, particularly during prayer times when worshippers gather.

Police officials also said officers would meet with the mosque’s imam as part of efforts to provide reassurance and maintain community safety. The authorities emphasized that the safety of residents and worshippers remains a priority during the ongoing investigation.

Investigators have appealed to witnesses and members of the public who may have relevant information to come forward. People with CCTV footage, mobile recordings, or dashcam footage from the area have been requested to share any material that could assist the investigation.

The incident has raised concerns among members of the local Muslim community, although police have stressed that the investigation is still at an early stage. Authorities continue to examine all available evidence to determine the motive and circumstances behind the shooting.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Saif said the proposal to establish new provinces should be taken seriously, arguing that the existing administrative framework is no longer capable of addressing the growing needs of the population efficiently. He said discussions alone would not bring meaningful change and urged the federal government to move beyond proposals by initiating practical measures for administrative restructuring. According to him, governance can only improve if reforms are implemented instead of remaining limited to public debate. Saif maintained that decision-making authority is concentrated within a small section of the bureaucracy, which limits administrative efficiency and delays the resolution of public issues. He stressed that a more balanced distribution of powers would strengthen governance and improve accountability. He said Pakistan requires comprehensive administrative reforms that would transfer greater authority to lower levels of government.     ISLAMABAD: The extension of the tenure of Professor Dr Nusrat Shah, Vice Chancellor of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU), Larkana, has reportedly prompted vice chancellors of several public-sector universities across Sindh to seek extensions as their first terms approach completion. According to sources, the first four-year terms of vice chancellors at eight government universities are set to expire over the coming months. Almost all of the serving VCs, except one, are reportedly seeking second terms. Nusrat Shah’s extension case reaches CM House Sources in the Sindh Chief Minister’s House said that a summary seeking an extension for Dr Nusrat Shah has been forwarded to the Chief Minister of Sindh. Dr Nusrat Shah’s current four-year term is scheduled to expire on January 1, 2027. She is the daughter of former Sindh chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah. Sources said her extension case has gained considerable attention and may receive approval. The development has reportedly encouraged other vice chancellors whose terms are also nearing completion to pursue extensions. One extension approved so far The Sindh government has so far approved an extension only for Dr Amjad Siraj Memon, Vice Chancellor of Jinnah Sindh Medical University. Sources said extension cases of Dr Khalid Iraqi and Dr Farooq Hassan have been rejected. Other VCs seeking second terms   Several other vice chancellors are also approaching the end of their first terms: Dr Ikramuddin Ujan — Vice Chancellor, Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences, Jamshoro. His term expires on January 1, 2027. His extension case is reportedly complicated by allegations concerning the awarding of multiple gold medals to his son at the university. Dr Zahid Hussain Khand — Vice Chancellor, Aror University of Art, Architecture, Design and Heritage, Sukkur. His term expires on January 19, 2027. Arbela Bhutto — Vice Chancellor, Shaheed Allah Buksh Soomro University of Art, Design and Heritages. Her term expires on January 19, 2027. Dr Asif Sheikh — Vice Chancellor, IBA Sukkur. His term expires on January 19, 2027. Dr Taha Hussain — Vice Chancellor, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology. His term is due to expire in mid-March 2027. Tahmina Nangraj — Vice Chancellor, Begum Nusrat Bhutto Women University, Sukkur. Her term expires on January 19, 2027.  Dr Samreen Hussain — Vice Chancellor, Dawood University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi. Her term expires in January 2027. Sources said summaries seeking extensions for several of these vice chancellors are expected to be forwarded to the Chief Minister’s House in the coming weeks. Test for Sindh government The growing number of extension requests is likely to pose a fresh challenge for the Sindh government and the Chief Minister, who exercises an important role in the appointment and continuation of leadership at public universities.     MULTAN: Director General of the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Saif Anwar Jappa, met Additional Chief Secretary South Punjab, Fawad Hashim Rabbani, at the South Punjab Secretariat to review the ongoing monsoon situation and flood relief operations across the region. During the meeting, the Additional Chief Secretary congratulated Saif Anwar Jappa on his appointment as DG PDMA and expressed his best wishes for his new role. The PDMA chief gave a detailed briefing on the current flood and weather situation, as well as the relief measures being undertaken in affected areas. He said the authority, in coordination with all relevant departments, has accelerated rescue and relief operations in response to the ongoing monsoon emergency. Jappa said dewatering efforts, ration distribution and rescue activities are continuing in flood-affected areas. He added that teams are actively working to drain water from urban flood zones and restore damaged roads to ensure public access and safety. He further said all district administrations and emergency control rooms have been placed on high alert around the clock to respond swiftly to any developing situation. The PDMA is also using modern technology, including drones, to deliver life jackets and emergency relief supplies to inaccessible areas during emergencies, he said. According to the DG PDMA, priority is being given to identifying flood relief camps in vulnerable districts and ensuring the timely provision of food, clean drinking water, dry fodder for livestock and other essential supplies to affected families. Additional Chief Secretary Fawad Hashim Rabbani directed authorities to maintain strict monitoring of water flows in flood-prone areas of South Punjab and ensure timely preventive measures. He said the completion of two new protective embankments at Jalalpur Pirwala in a record period, under the directions of the Punjab government, has played a significant role in protecting the city from floodwaters. Rabbani also instructed officials to ensure the immediate evacuation of people living in riverine and low-lying areas where flood risks remain high. He further directed that rescue and relief teams remain fully prepared in the hilly areas of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur to respond promptly to any emergencies caused by flash floods and hill torrents during the ongoing monsoon season.
