Starvation Wages in Times of Inflation

I wish to draw attention to the worsening condition of daily wage labourers. Despite working from morning till evening under the scorching sun, many labourers receive only around Rs1,500 a day. In today’s high inflation, this amount is far from enough to cover basic necessities such as food, rent, transport, education, and medical expenses.

The rising cost of living has made survival extremely difficult for low-income families. While prices continue to increase, the wages of many labourers remain unchanged. This imbalance is forcing hardworking people deeper into poverty despite their honest efforts.

The government should revise the minimum wage in line with inflation and ensure that employers pay workers fairly and on time. Protecting the rights of labourers is essential for social justice and economic stability.

I hope the concerned authorities will take immediate action to improve the lives of daily wage workers

  • Survey finds divide over AI

    A new report from the Pew Research Center shows that artificial intelligence (AI) experts and the general public have very different opinions about the future of AI. While experts are mostly positive about its impact many people are worried that AI could replace jobs and create new challenges. According to the survey, 56% of AI experts believe the technology will have a positive effect on the United States over the next 20 years. In comparison, only 17% of the public share that view. Experts are more confident that AI will improve the way people work and help grow the economy. However many people are concerned that AI could reduce job opportunities especially in roles that depend on human workers. The report also highlights the jobs experts believe are most likely to be affected by AI. About 73% think cashier jobs could be replaced followed by truck drivers (62%) journalists (60%) factory workers (60%) and software engineers (50%). The public generally agrees with these predictions although only 33% believe truck drivers are at high risk. Both experts and the public agree that healthcare is one of the areas where AI can bring the greatest benefits. They believe AI could improve medical care and support better treatment. At the same time both groups are concerned that AI may not improve the accuracy of news or election coverage. The survey also found strong support for greater control over AI. Many respondents believe governments may struggle to regulate the technology effectively as it continues to develop. Another finding is the difference between male and female AI experts. Around 63% of male experts expect AI to have a positive impact on the United States compared with 36% of female experts. Women were generally more cautious saying the technology could have both benefits and risks. The report also notes that women remain underrepresented in the AI industry. Researchers suggest that increasing women’s participation in AI development could lead to more balanced technologies. They also point out that many jobs with a large number of female workers such as administrative and customer service roles are becoming more automated increasing the risk of job losses. Overall the report shows that understanding both expert opinions and public concerns is important. As AI continues to grow balancing its benefits with responsible rules and safeguards will be essential.

  • AI Cannot Replace Expertise

    By Arooba Younas The surge in the use of Artificial Intelligence by businesses, corporations, and organisations has been illustrated by the latest McKinsey Global Survey on the state of AI. Accordingly, 88 per cent of organisations reported the regular use of AI in at least one business function, a 10 per cent increase from the results of the survey conducted in the preceding year. Indicative of business leaders’ desire to boost productivity and reduce operational costs, companies adopted AI to achieve greater efficiency. The reverberations of AI integration are felt in the splintering of the organisational pyramid, driven by the expansion of what a single individual can accomplish. However, flattening hierarchies is not tantamount to flattening skill hierarchies or democratisation of expertise. Research has shown that Generative AI (GenAI) has the greatest impact on the level of expertise required to perform jobs, resulting in an accelerated learning curve for entry-level workers. Whilst shortening the learning curve and the time it takes novices to gain competence at new tasks, the limits of GenAI in upskilling workers have been revealed in an experiment conducted by researchers from Harvard Business School’s Data Design Institute and Stanford University, involving 78 employees from IG Group, a UK-based fintech company. Dividing the employees into three groups of occupational insiders (professional writers), adjacent outsiders (marketing specialists), and distant outsiders (technologists), the experiment attempted to gauge whether marketing specialists and technologists could match the performance of professional writers in conceptualising and drafting articles for IG Group’s website while receiving GenAI assistance. The results revealed that AI levelled the playing field at the conceptualisation stage. However, when the nature of the task shifted to executing the ideas by putting them in writing, a prominent expertise gap emerged. Both with and without GenAI’s help, the writers produced the best work, with marketers coming close and technologists lagging behind regardless of AI use. The divergence in performance, despite AI support, is a portrayal of the “GenAI Wall”, depicting the point at which GenAI does not sufficiently reduce the expertise gap between occupational insiders and outsiders. This is indicative of GenAI’s limit in how far it can carry workers outside their domain expertise. Without foundational knowledge, it becomes difficult for outsiders to distinguish between effective and flawed suggestions generated by GenAI. As a result, they may rely on its outputs without applying the necessary refinement, critical judgement and contextual understanding. Nonetheless, the experiment has implications for business organisations, particularly for leaders who overestimate the abilities of AI. It can only hasten the competency of individuals who are adjacent to a domain, and not conjure expertise out of thin air. In this regard, work structure, which is already undergoing change, can be rethought along the lines of expertise. A more fluid work environment can be created, where, in lieu of strict job roles, boundaries can blur by converging adjacent specialists. However, the experiment is not an advocacy for hiring fewer novices. Studies have shown a reduction in entry-level role postings, falling by 32 per cent in 2025 compared to 2019-2022. This suggests a myopic conclusion drawn from GenAI’s putative capabilities, for it is beginners who, when assimilated into the company’s culture and learn through practice, become experts. By thwarting the pipeline of learners by letting AI take over early-career work, which actually led to the making of experts, today’s efficiency may be sacrificed for impoverished talent tomorrow. The latter has been represented by the AI boomerang effect – recent AI-related layoffs, which are now being quietly reversed – as reports indicated employers regretting layoff decisions. This is because of AI hallucinations as well as its inadequacy to replace the required context or institutional knowledge, which human employees possessed. Although the IG Group experiment was conducted in a Western context, its implications can be generalised across the world, particularly as the allure of AI has diffused across continents. However, the embracing of AI in the Global South, whether in businesses or other sectors, has to be accompanied by digital literacy, localised governance, and a research ecosystem. This is significant lest the adoption of AI brings with it downsides in the form of overdependence and a putative magic bullet solution to solving complex issues ranging from bad governance to climate-related disasters. Additionally, GenAI’s exposure to the labour market has caused faster materialisation of disruptions rather than productivity gains due to a higher risk of job losses, as AI-driven automation can close clerical and administrative positions, which have historically served as pathways to decent work. Conclusively, GenAI has brought the promise of enabling individuals to bridge their capability gaps. However, AI cannot replace expertise or be an all-encompassing fix because it relies on pattern recognition rather than understanding real-world context. One of the mosque’s most fascinating features is its natural acoustics. A person can reportedly speak softly near the prayer area and have their voice heard clearly in another part of the mosque. This is possible because of the way the walls domes and other structures were designed to reflect sound. The mosque was built long before modern speakers and sound systems yet its clever design allows sound to travel across large sections of the building. Over the centuries the historic mosque has gone through different stages of repair and preservation. During the era of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, efforts were also made to improve and protect the historic site. The mosque is also known for its huge capacity. It is believed that around 40,000 to 50,000 people can gather there for Friday prayers. Its decoration is another major attraction. While many famous Mughal buildings are known for red stone and white marble the Shah Jahan Mosque features beautiful blue and white glazed tiles.  The detailed tilework reflects the artistic traditions of Iran and Hala a historic city in Sindh known for its crafts. With its centuries old history striking domes, colorful tiles and remarkable acoustics the Shah Jahan Mosque remains a remarkable symbol of Sindh’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.

    Pakistan is an Islamic republic whose Constitution defines not only the structure of the state but also its ideological foundation. It explicitly states that the country should create an environment in which Muslims can live their lives in accordance with the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah. Against this constitutional backdrop, it is surprising that the issue of women wearing the abaya—or an Islamic financial institution including the abaya in its employee dress code—has become a matter of concern for a parliamentary committee. This naturally raises an important question: Who is setting the country’s priorities, and are these truly the issues that deserve Parliament’s attention? Pakistan continues to face pressing challenges, including rising inflation, unemployment, an unequal tax system, a struggling economy, and serious shortcomings in education and healthcare. These are the issues that directly affect the daily lives of millions of citizens. If a parliamentary standing committee, whose primary responsibility is financial oversight, chooses to focus instead on the dress code of Islamic banks, it is reasonable for the public to question whether legislative priorities are aligned with the country’s most urgent needs. The debate also raises questions about consistency. Critics have objected to the abaya as part of an institutional dress code, yet there is little discussion about uniforms in many government departments that follow Western styles of dress. Women serving in the police, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and several other public institutions are commonly required to wear trousers and shirts as part of their official uniforms. If clothing is to become a matter of parliamentary debate, then similar standards should apply across the board. Selective criticism can create the perception of bias. Supporters of Islamic dress codes argue that the issue extends beyond clothing itself and reflects broader concerns about cultural and religious identity. From this perspective, the concern is not simply about the abaya but about a mindset that views visible expressions of religious identity as obstacles to modernization. They question whether institutions with an Islamic identity should be expected to abandon their traditions in the name of progress. This leads to a broader debate: Who defines what it means to be modern? Does modernization necessarily require reducing the public expression of religious values or adopting Western cultural norms? For institutions operating within Pakistan’s Islamic banking framework, supporters argue that their identity is rooted not only in financial principles but also in ethical and religious values. If such institutions adopt internal policies that comply with Pakistani law and reflect constitutional and religious principles, they contend that those choices should be respected. The discussion also draws comparisons with international examples. In countries such as France, restrictions on religious clothing have generated significant criticism from human rights advocates. Supporters of religious freedom argue that Pakistan, which was established with a distinct religious and cultural identity, should carefully consider whether adopting similar approaches is consistent with its own constitutional framework and historical foundations. Ultimately, the central argument is that Parliament should devote its time and resources to addressing issues that directly affect governance, economic stability, and public welfare. Matters of personal attire, religious belief, and institutional identity, many argue, should not become subjects of unnecessary official intervention when the country faces far more pressing social and economic challenges.

    Park Ji-won, who became famous as a child after appearing in the viral “Baby Shark Dance” video has returned to the music world after nearly a decade. Now known as “Baby Shark Boy,” Park is starting a new journey as a K-pop singer. He has released his first digital single “WAVE.” Park appeared in the “Baby Shark Dance” video when he was just seven years old.  The video later became the most watched video in YouTube history gaining billions of views around the world. His new solo music project is supported by The Pinkfong Company, the owner of the “Baby Shark” copyright. Park said he is thankful that people still remember him after so many years. He believes the love for “Baby Shark” inspired him to reconnect with people through music. The “Baby Shark” song was released in 2016 and its famous video has now crossed 17.2 billion views.  The song became a worldwide hit, inspiring dance trends parodies and countless social media posts. “Baby Shark” has even been played at the White House while famous figures such as Donald Trump and Elon Musk have mentioned the popular song. After his early success, Park also appeared in other Pinkfong projects. His new single “WAVE” begins with a sound that reminds listeners of “Baby Shark” before moving into a modern electro pop style.  Park also helped write the lyrics for the song. After becoming famous as a child Park is now ready to build a new identity in the K-pop world.

To do this, go to Settings, select Apps, open the relevant app’s information page then select Storage and tap Clear Cache. Update operating system and apps Outdated operating systems and apps can affect performance and internet speed. Keeping your software and apps updated can help maintain better speed while also improving the overall performance of your phone. Use fast browser A web browser can directly affect your browsing experience and internet performance. Browsers such as Google Chrome and Firefox are regularly updated and their performance is continuously improved. Adjust Airplane Mode Airplane Mode on smartphones is primarily designed to disable radio-frequency signal transmission. When Airplane Mode is turned on, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular signals are switched off, stopping wireless communication. However, this feature can also be used to refresh your internet connection. Smartphones connect to nearby mobile towers for cellular signals. When you move around throughout the day, your phone may not always connect to the best available tower. Resetting the connection through Airplane Mode may help improve internet speed. Simply turn Airplane Mode on and wait for a short while before turning it off again. This may allow your Android phone to reconnect to a better mobile tower and improve internet speed. Restart your phone or router Restarting devices can also improve their performance. Restarting your smartphone or router may clear temporary errors and can sometimes help improve internet speed. Move closer to router Distance is important when using a Wi-Fi connection. If possible, move closer to your router. This can improve the signal strength and may result in a faster and more stable internet connection.
