Supreme Court to honour Justice Musarrat Hilali

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has decided to hold a full court reference on August 7 to honour the judicial services of Justice Musarrat Hilali ahead of her retirement from the country’s apex court.

An official notification has been issued announcing the ceremony, which will pay tribute to Justice Hilali’s contributions to Pakistan’s judiciary and recognise her years of service on the bench.

The full court reference will be attended by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi, all judges of the Supreme Court, the Attorney General for Pakistan, representatives of the Pakistan Bar Council, office-bearers of the Supreme Court Bar Association, and members of the legal fraternity.

The event is a longstanding judicial tradition held to acknowledge the professional achievements and public service of retiring judges. During the reference, senior judges, law officers and representatives of the legal community are expected to deliver speeches highlighting Justice Hilali’s legal career, commitment to the rule of law and contributions to the administration of justice.

Justice Musarrat Hilali has served in several key judicial positions during her career and has been recognised for her role in strengthening Pakistan’s judicial system.     The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has introduced a major relief for small-scale solar consumers by amending the Solar Regulations 2026. The new changes remove a key regulatory requirement for consumers installing solar systems of up to 25 kilowatts (kW). According to an official notification issued by NEPRA, consumers with solar power systems of up to 25kW will no longer need to obtain prior approval from the regulatory authority before installing or connecting their systems. Instead, the power to grant approvals has now been delegated to the relevant electricity distribution companies (DISCOs). Consumers will be able to complete the approval process directly through their local power utility, eliminating the need to seek separate permission from NEPRA. The amendment is expected to simplify the procedure for residential, commercial and small business consumers who want to switch to solar energy. By reducing regulatory hurdles, the revised framework aims to make the installation process faster, easier and more efficient. Energy experts believe the decision will encourage more consumers to invest in solar power by shortening approval times and reducing paperwork. The move is also expected to support Pakistan’s growing transition towards renewable energy and lessen dependence on conventional electricity sources. The revised regulations are intended to improve access to clean energy while giving electricity distribution companies greater authority to process applications and facilitate small-scale solar projects more quickly.

    AJK gears up for second phase of elections

    Preparations are in full swing for the second phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections, with polling scheduled for August 2 across Muzaffarabad Division and 12 refugee seats. The second phase will cover the three districts of Muzaffarabad Division—Muzaffarabad, Neelum and Jhelum Valley—as well as 12 constituencies reserved for Kashmiri refugees residing in Pakistan. According to election authorities, a total of 890,621 registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots in the nine constituencies of Muzaffarabad Division. Of these, 427,955 are male voters, while 381,666 are female voters. To facilitate polling, 1,483 polling stations have been established across the division. District Muzaffarabad, which has five constituencies, will have 1,205 polling stations. District Neelum, comprising two constituencies, will have 278 polling stations, while 328 polling stations have been set up in the two constituencies of Jhelum Valley. A total of 208 candidates are contesting the nine seats in Muzaffarabad Division, making the second phase a closely watched electoral contest. Meanwhile, Kashmiri refugees living in Pakistan will also cast their votes for 12 refugee constituencies, evenly divided between six Jammu seats and six Valley seats. The Jammu refugee constituencies include LA-34 Jammu-I through LA-39 Jammu-VI, while the Valley refugee constituencies comprise LA-40 Valley-I through LA-45 Valley-VI. The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission will announce the results of all 12 refugee constituencies after the completion of polling. Authorities have said all necessary arrangements have been finalised to ensure a peaceful, transparent and orderly voting process during the second phase of the elections.

    Two women allegedly harassed on Karachi streets

In the first incident, a motorcyclist allegedly harassed a woman who was walking along a road in Orangi Town. In that case, a motorcyclist allegedly harassed a woman while she was walking on the road. CCTV footage of the incident surfaced a day earlier. The two incidents have sparked concern over the safety of women in Karachi. The circulation of the videos has also prompted calls for authorities to identify the suspects and take appropriate legal action. No suspect has been arrested in either case so far. There is also no confirmed report of a formal complaint being registered by either of the affected women. Authorities have yet to provide further details about the incidents or confirm whether investigations have been formally launched.

    NCCIA Punjab arrests 4 in cybercrime crackdown

    LAHORE: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Punjab has arrested four suspects during coordinated enforcement operations conducted in Lahore and Multan as part of its ongoing campaign against serious cybercrime. The cases involve the alleged trafficking of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), online harassment of a minor, cyber blackmail, and the unlawful sharing of intimate digital content. In the most significant operation, NCCIA investigators in Lahore arrested a suspect accused of possessing and distributing Child Sexual Abuse Material, including illegal content depicting the sexual abuse of children and animals. According to investigators, the material was allegedly circulated through online platforms for commercial purposes. Mobile devices and other electronic evidence were seized during the operation and have been sent for forensic examination. Investigators are working to identify additional victims, trace the origin of the material, and determine whether other individuals were involved. Child Sexual Abuse Material is regarded worldwide as one of the most serious forms of online criminal exploitation. The production, possession, distribution, or sale of such material is treated as a major criminal offence by law enforcement agencies across the globe. In a separate operation in Lahore, NCCIA officers arrested another suspect accused of using social media to harass and intimidate a minor. Investigators collected digital evidence that will form part of the continuing criminal investigation. In Multan, two additional suspects were taken into custody in separate investigations involving the alleged blackmail of female victims through private photographs and videos. Investigators allege that the suspects used WhatsApp and other online platforms to issue threats and unlawfully share sensitive digital content. Electronic devices and other evidentiary material were recovered during the operations, and forensic analysis is continuing. Director NCCIA Punjab Muhammad Ali Wasim said the agency will continue to pursue individuals involved in child exploitation, cyber extortion, online harassment, and related offences. He said crimes involving Child Sexual Abuse Material demand an immediate and uncompromising law enforcement response because of the serious harm they inflict on children. He also encouraged parents and members of the public to remain alert, supervise children’s online activity, and promptly report suspected cybercrime so that timely legal action can be taken.
