Taiwan to test shifting weapons production during major military exercise

Taiwan will carry out a new military exercise next month to test whether it can continue producing weapons if key defence facilities come under attack during a conflict with China. The drills will include relocating arms production lines and converting civilian factories into military manufacturing sites to ensure the armed forces continue receiving essential equipment even if major supply hubs are damaged.

The exercise will take place as part of Taiwan’s annual Han Kuang war games, scheduled from August 5 to August 14. According to the Ministry of National Defense, the scenario will simulate China using its regular military exercises as cover to prepare for a full scale invasion. Taiwan’s armed forces will respond by immediately increasing combat readiness and launching rapid defensive operations.

One of the main objectives is to determine whether industrial production can be spread across different locations without disrupting the supply of military equipment. Officials say maintaining manufacturing capacity during wartime is essential because China would likely target command centers, ports, logistics networks and defence factories early in any military campaign.

Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and has never ruled out using force to bring the island under its control. Taiwan strongly rejects those claims, maintaining that it is already a self governed and independent nation.

Major General Lu Wen-yuan, who heads the Joint Operations Division, said the exercise will assume that Chinese forces use their routine annual military drills to hide preparations for a large scale assault. Under the scenario, Taiwan will activate emergency measures and begin moving critical defence production away from vulnerable locations.

The drills will include the simulated relocation of the Armaments Bureau’s 202nd Arsenal in Taipei. Civilian factories responsible for assembling complete military systems will also be mobilized after emergency orders are issued. The exercise is designed to measure how quickly industries can shift operations while continuing to meet the military’s needs during a crisis.

Taiwan will also examine its ability to keep vital shipping routes open if conflict disrupts normal transport. The navy and coast guard will conduct joint operations using personnel, equipment and live ammunition. These exercises will include escorting shipments of essential supplies, protecting coastal areas, carrying out maritime law enforcement missions and testing upgraded coast guard vessels.

The military planning comes as Taiwan reports a noticeable increase in Chinese coast guard activity around the island. Officials in Taipei believe the growing presence could signal greater pressure on Taiwan’s eastern coastline and threaten sea routes that are critical for importing fuel, food and other strategic supplies.

For the first time, the Han Kuang exercises will also include a nationwide communications test. Mobile internet speeds will be deliberately reduced during parts of the ten day exercise to assess how the public and emergency services would communicate if network capacity became limited because of natural disasters or military action. Authorities hope the test will help identify weaknesses in emergency communication systems and improve the island’s ability to function during a prolonged crisis.

The expanded drills reflect Taiwan’s efforts to strengthen its overall resilience against potential military threats. By preparing industries, transport networks and communication systems for wartime conditions, officials aim to ensure that the island can continue supporting both its armed forces and civilian population even if key infrastructure comes under sustained attack.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has said that lasting peace in the province can only be ensured by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), stressing that no other force can replace their role in maintaining law and order. Speaking to reporters after visiting those injured in the recent explosion in Swat, the chief minister said peace is a shared responsibility and a common need for every citizen. He added that all political parties, religious groups, and people from different schools of thought are united in their desire to restore peace across the province. Afridi said the provincial government remains fully committed to its security policy and will implement it without compromise. He urged the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to stand together in support of peace and stability. He praised the sacrifices made by the provincial police and said the government is providing the force with all the resources it needs to combat terrorism and maintain security. According to the chief minister, more than Rs35 billion has been allocated to strengthen police infrastructure, modern equipment, and operational capacity. He maintained that the KP Police and CTD have the experience, capability, and commitment required to tackle security challenges and said no third party could establish peace in the province more effectively than these institutions. The chief minister said peace is essential for economic growth and public prosperity, adding that development cannot take place without a secure environment. He reaffirmed that strengthening law enforcement agencies remains one of the provincial government’s top priorities. Commenting on national politics, Afridi criticised the federal government, claiming it came to power through what he described as a “Form 47 mandate.” He urged the federal leadership to focus on addressing its own governance and economic challenges instead of criticising the provincial government. He also alleged that Rs5 trillion had been paid under the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) framework and claimed that the country’s economic indicators, including GDP growth, were declining.

China’s burger boom draws coffee chains and …

Burgers have become one of China’s most contested fast food categories, with budget minded diners and shrinking household sizes fueling a rush that now includes hotpot operators and coffee brands alongside established global chains. Yum China’s Pizza Hut Burger Bar concept, which places a dedicated burger counter inside existing Pizza Hut locations, expanded to more than 200 outlets within six months, the company said in July. Yum China plans to grow the format to between 500 and 600 outlets by the end of 2026, representing roughly 10 percent of its total Pizza Hut store network in China. The surge into burgers reflects broader changes in Chinese consumer habits. As households shrink and economic uncertainty keeps spending cautious, diners increasingly favor lower cost, portable meals that deliver convenience without sacrificing value. That shift has transformed burgers from a niche Western import long dominated by McDonald’s, KFC and Burger King into one of the most fiercely contested segments of China’s restaurant industry, drawing a wave of new entrants eager to capture market share. Last month, hotpot chain Haidilao entered the space with a new concept called Huanxianbao, or Fresh Burger, which sells burgers alongside pizza, pasta and fried chicken. Coffee chain M Stand has also opened burger focused locations in several cities. China’s Western style fast food market was valued at 499.65 billion yuan, or about $74.1 billion, in 2025 and is projected to reach 587.09 billion yuan by 2027, according to data provider iiMedia Research, even as several global brands face broader challenges in the market. Burgers ranked as the top preference among consumers surveyed, with 55 percent selecting the category. While still a relatively small slice of China’s overall fast food industry, the burger segment alone was worth $18.4 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow 8.7 percent annually through 2035, according to Emergen Research. Part of the category’s appeal lies in simple economics. Food industry analyst Zhu Danpeng said burgers offer a lower cost alternative to full service restaurant meals while still functioning as a substantial meal, calling them a strong value for money option amid cautious consumer spending. Wang Fang, a university student in Beijing, said burgers have become a default lunch choice for her and her classmates because they cost less than ordering several dishes at a sit down restaurant. She said a burger loaded with meat, vegetables and butter makes for an affordable, balanced meal. The category’s rise also tracks with shifting demographics. Growing numbers of single person households, smaller families and young urban professionals have driven demand for convenient meals sized for one, a trend Yum China says is opening opportunities across its brand portfolio. Pizza Hut added burgers to its menu in 2024, and by 2025 the category accounted for a mid single digit percentage of Pizza Hut’s total sales in China, the company said. Yum China expects burgers to generate more than 1 billion yuan in sales this year, representing 5 to 6 percent of the brand’s revenue. The company said burgers resonate strongly with takeaway and delivery customers in China, where 43 percent of consumers order delivery at least once a week, compared with a global average of 23 percent, according to Euromonitor. The growing appetite for burgers has drawn competitors from across the industry. Domestic chains such as Tasiting now compete directly with McDonald’s, Yum China’s KFC and Shake Shack for market share. International brands are eager to join the competition as well. When US chain Five Guys opened its first stores in Beijing this month, customers waited more than two hours to be served. Wendy’s said in May that it plans to enter the Chinese market and open as many as 1,000 franchised restaurants over the next decade. Liu Tao, a 48 year old musician in Beijing, regularly takes his 11 year old son to McDonald’s on Sundays, fitting the meal into a tight schedule between the boy’s math and English classes. He said burgers work well when time is short and he needs food that feels clean, quick and won’t bore his son, noting that his son often eats in the car on the way to his next class.

Wildfires force 43,000 to flee in France

More than 43,000 people have been evacuated from southwestern France as massive wildfires continue to spread across several regions, threatening residential areas, forests and popular tourist destinations. French authorities have launched one of the country’s largest emergency operations of the year as firefighters work around the clock to contain the rapidly advancing flames. The worst-affected area is located near Arcachon Bay and the Cap Ferret peninsula in the Gironde region. The wildfire has already burned through more than 8,700 hectares of land and continues to spread because of strong winds, dry vegetation and extremely high temperatures. Authorities ordered the complete evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula, a major holiday destination on France’s Atlantic coast that attracts thousands of visitors every summer. Residents, tourists and campers were instructed to leave immediately as emergency services expanded evacuation operations. To speed up the evacuation, authorities arranged transport by both road and sea. Special boats were deployed from several coastal villages while vehicles used the peninsula’s only highway leading to the mainland. Emergency officials urged everyone in the affected areas to leave without delay for their own safety. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the Gironde wildfire as the largest fire of the current season. He said around 80 homes have been damaged, including nearly 50 houses that were completely destroyed by the flames. More than 1,000 firefighters, supported by helicopters, military engineering units and civil security teams, are working to control the blaze in Gironde. Hundreds of police officers and emergency personnel have also been deployed to help with evacuations, traffic management and public safety. A second major wildfire is burning near Biscarrosse in the neighbouring Landes region. The fire has destroyed more than 2,500 hectares of forest and forced the evacuation of over 23,000 residents, tourists and campers. Local authorities said the blaze remains out of control after continuing to spread overnight. French President Emmanuel Macron has requested international assistance through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. Several European countries have agreed to send additional firefighting aircraft and helicopters to help French authorities contain the fires. Croatia is sending Canadair water-bombing aircraft, while Portugal will provide specialised firefighting planes. The Czech Republic and Slovakia are also deploying heavy helicopters to assist emergency crews. Emergency officials said there have been no confirmed fatalities in the Gironde wildfire so far. However, they warned that weather conditions remain highly dangerous and could make firefighting efforts even more difficult in the coming days. Fire experts say the blazes are spreading unusually quickly because of prolonged heatwaves, severe drought and strong winds. These conditions have left forests and vegetation extremely dry, allowing fires to expand rapidly across large areas. Authorities estimate that nearly 50,000 hectares of land have burned across France since the beginning of this year’s wildfire season, making it one of the country’s most destructive fire seasons in recent years.
