Trial commences for Malaysian teenager accused of fatal school stabbing

A 14-year-old boy has gone on trial in Malaysia for the alleged murder of his 16-year-old schoolmate, Yap Shing Xuen, whose body was discovered with multiple knife wounds in a secondary school toilet near Kuala Lumpur.

The accused, who pleaded not guilty, faces up to 40 years in prison and potential caning if convicted, though capital punishment is barred due to his status as a minor under Malaysian law. Police confirmed the recovery of a written note at the scene and cited potential online influence, sparking nationwide debate concerning the impact of social media algorithms, incel subcultures, and youth exposure to radicalising content.

In response to growing public concern surrounding youth safety, Malaysian authorities have instituted a policy prohibiting children under 16 from maintaining accounts on major social media platforms.

West Indies spark debate with unusual strategy to stop Babar Azam

West Indies have come under scrutiny after employing an unusual fielding tactic against Pakistan during the first Test, sparking widespread debate among cricket fans and experts. The incident occurred on the final delivery of an over when Pakistan batter Babar Azam played the ball into the field and attempted to take a single. Instead of collecting the ball immediately and throwing it back, West Indies fast bowler and fielder Shamar Joseph deliberately allowed it to continue rolling toward the boundary. Joseph waited until the ball reached the boundary rope, conceding four runs instead of preventing the boundary. The apparent objective was to ensure Babar remained at the non-striker’s end, preventing him from facing the first delivery of the next over. The move effectively sacrificed three additional runs in exchange for denying Pakistan’s star batter more time at the crease. At the time, Babar appeared to be batting confidently and had shown encouraging signs of returning to his best form, prompting the West Indies to adopt a tactical approach aimed at limiting his influence. The moment was captured on camera and quickly spread across social media, where it generated mixed reactions from fans and former players alike. Many questioned whether the decision reflected the spirit of the game, arguing that intentionally allowing a boundary to avoid bowling to a particular batter was against the traditions of Test cricket. Critics described the tactic as unsporting, saying teams should focus on dismissing batters through skill rather than manipulating the strike in such an unconventional manner. Some supporters of Pakistan also expressed frustration, claiming the strategy highlighted the respect and concern the West Indies had for Babar’s batting ability. However, others defended the decision, pointing out that Test cricket has always involved strategic planning and field placements designed to gain an advantage. They argued that if a team believes facing a certain batter poses a greater threat, using legal methods to keep that player off strike is simply part of the tactical battle that defines the longest format of the game. Supporters of the move also noted that the Laws of Cricket do not prohibit a fielder from allowing the ball to reach the boundary intentionally. As long as no law is breached, they believe captains and players are free to make calculated decisions that improve their chances of success. The incident has reignited discussions about the balance between gamesmanship and sportsmanship in modern cricket. While innovative tactics have become increasingly common across all formats, opinions remain divided over where teams should draw the line between strategic thinking and preserving the spirit of the game. Regardless of the differing viewpoints, the episode has become one of the most talked-about moments of the opening Test, with Babar Azam once again finding himself at the center of attention. Whether viewed as clever strategy or controversial gamesmanship, the West Indies’ decision has added another fascinating chapter to the ongoing contest between the two sides.

Shubman Gill returns to No.1 in ICC ODI batting rankings

India captain Shubman Gill has reclaimed the No.1 position in the ICC Men’s ODI batting rankings after an outstanding run of form in the recently concluded three-match ODI series against England. The right-handed opener produced another impressive performance with the bat, scoring a total of 188 runs across the series. His consistency at the top of the order helped him climb back to the summit of the rankings, marking the third time in his international career that he has occupied the top spot among ODI batters. Gill’s return to the top was also influenced by New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell, who missed the final two matches of his team’s ODI series against the West Indies because of injury. Mitchell’s absence prevented him from adding to his ranking points, allowing Gill to move ahead in the latest ICC update. The latest rankings also featured significant movements in both the batting and bowling charts across ODI and T20I cricket. Namibia spinner Bernard Scholtz emerged as one of the biggest gainers in the ODI bowling rankings. The experienced left-arm spinner climbed five places to seventh after delivering a series of impressive performances during Namibia’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series campaign in Utrecht against Nepal and the Netherlands. His consistent wicket-taking ability played a crucial role in Namibia’s successful campaign and earned him a place among the world’s leading ODI bowlers. Meanwhile, India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continued his remarkable rise on the international stage. The youngster was named Player of the Series after a brilliant display in India’s T20I series against Zimbabwe. He scored 151 runs in just three innings while maintaining a stunning strike rate of 196.10, underlining his aggressive approach at the crease. Having played only six T20 internationals so far, Sooryavanshi made one of the biggest jumps in the latest rankings, soaring 230 places to reach 48th in the ICC Men’s T20I batting rankings. His rapid progress highlights his growing reputation as one of India’s most exciting young talents. India also enjoyed success elsewhere in the T20I batting rankings. Tilak Varma moved up two places to sixth after continuing his consistent performances in the shortest format, while Shreyas Iyer climbed seven positions to reach 24th following a productive series. The bowling rankings also witnessed notable changes. Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani gained 10 places to move into 26th position after delivering impactful performances with the new ball. India leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi also registered one of the biggest improvements of the week, jumping 31 places to claim the 41st spot in the T20I bowling rankings. The latest ICC rankings reflect recent performances across international cricket, with several players making significant progress through consistent displays. While Gill’s return to the top of the ODI batting rankings remains the biggest headline, the rise of emerging talents such as Sooryavanshi and the continued progress of bowlers like Scholtz, Muzarabani and Bishnoi highlight the growing competition across all formats of the game.

Pakistan moves to strengthen digital finance and e…

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has called for a more supportive regulatory framework to expand electronic transactions, improve digital access to finance and accelerate Pakistan’s broader digital transformation. The minister made these remarks during a meeting with Pakistan Digital Authority (PDA) Chairperson Dr Sohail Munir, where the two discussed digital finance, technology-driven economic activity and the development of Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. According to the Ministry of Finance, Aurangzeb stressed that existing regulations must evolve alongside technological advancements and new business models. The meeting focused on creating an environment that recognises electronic transactions and encourages greater use of digital systems in trade and financial activities. The participants also examined ways to improve access to finance by expanding digital platforms and making financial procedures more efficient. Aurangzeb particularly highlighted the need to simplify customer onboarding, strengthen data-sharing systems and improve the interoperability of financial information. Greater integration between banks and capital markets was also discussed, with the aim of making investment opportunities more accessible to ordinary citizens. The minister said streamlined digital account-opening procedures could encourage wider participation in the capital market. Better connections between banking and capital-market systems, he added, could increase investor participation and improve access to investment opportunities. The meeting also covered the importance of connecting government data systems. According to the ministry, better-integrated data could help policymakers improve planning, policy formulation and decision-making. The increased use of technology and artificial intelligence was identified as another opportunity to improve the efficiency of government and financial services. Digital infrastructure was another key area of discussion. Aurangzeb emphasised that new initiatives should be practical, scalable and consistent with Pakistan’s wider digital transformation goals. Digital assets and tokenisation were also discussed, particularly their possible applications in real estate and other investment sectors. Participants stressed that appropriate regulations and supporting mechanisms would be necessary for the responsible adoption of emerging technologies. Aurangzeb appreciated the work of the Pakistan Digital Authority and called for practical, high-impact initiatives that could improve efficiency, expand financial access and strengthen the country’s digital capabilities. He also emphasised continued coordination among relevant stakeholders to ensure steady progress in Pakistan’s digital economy. Pakistan has already witnessed significant growth in digital payments. According to the State Bank of Pakistan, retail payments through the banking system reached 3.7 billion transactions during January-March 2026, representing a 9% increase from the previous quarter. Digital channels accounted for 92% of total retail payment volumes, processing around 3.4 billion transactions worth Rs68.3 trillion. Mobile banking and digital wallet registrations exceeded 132 million by March 2026, rising 37% year-on-year. Nearly half of Pakistan’s 268 million bank accounts were connected to a mobile banking application or digital wallet. Meanwhile, Raast processed 742 million transactions worth Rs23.27 trillion during the quarter, reflecting growing public acceptance of instant digital payments. Mobile wallets such as Easypaisa and JazzCash have also expanded access to basic financial services, particularly for people previously underserved by traditional banking. Merchant adoption is growing as well. QR-enabled merchants more than tripled during FY25, rising from 516,000 in FY24 to more than 1.9 million by the end of 2025. Although digital adoption remains stronger in urban areas, the figures indicate that Pakistan’s digital financial ecosystem is expanding rapidly.

Ronaldo, Georgina plan grand wedding after intimat…

Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and his longtime partner Georgina Rodriguez are planning a lavish wedding celebration after quietly getting married in an intimate ceremony at their home in Portugal. The couple reportedly tied the knot on August 11, marking the 10th anniversary of the day they first met at a store in Madrid in 2016. Their private ceremony was attended only by their children, reflecting their decision to keep the occasion away from the public spotlight. Georgina recently opened up about the marriage in an interview with British fashion magazine Vogue, explaining that their demanding schedules led them to choose a simple ceremony at home. She revealed that the couple intends to organise a much larger celebration in the future, allowing their relatives and close friends to share the special occasion with them. Georgina also recalled that she once dreamed of a fairytale wedding featuring a grand palace, a royal carriage, a long wedding dress and a diamond-studded crown. However, she said her priorities have changed with time, and she now values a peaceful and private celebration with Ronaldo and their children. Following their wedding, Ronaldo and Georgina reportedly travelled for about an hour to the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal, where they paid their respects. The couple’s low-key wedding has attracted widespread attention, while their plans for a larger celebration are expected to generate further excitement among fans around the world. Moreover, Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez have given fans an intimate glimpse into their long-awaited wedding, with the first photograph from their private ceremony quickly attracting attention online. The Portuguese football superstar and his longtime partner reportedly tied the knot on Aug 11 in a civil ceremony at their home in Cascais, Portugal. Rather than organising a lavish celebrity wedding, the couple chose a quiet family gathering surrounded by their five children and a small circle of loved ones. The setting was reportedly their living room, adding an unusually personal touch to an event that could easily have become one of the world’s most extravagant celebrity weddings. A meaningful Gucci choice Ronaldo and Georgina also made a fashion statement with their wedding outfits, both choosing the luxury Italian brand Gucci. Georgina opted for an elegant white silk skirt suit instead of a traditional bridal gown, while Ronaldo wore a light khaki-coloured suit. Their children were dressed in soft, coordinated shades, giving the family portrait a simple yet polished appearance. The Gucci connection carries special meaning for the couple. Ronaldo and Georgina first met in 2016 at a Gucci store in Madrid, where Georgina was working as a sales assistant. What began as an encounter at a fashion store eventually developed into one of the most closely followed relationships in international sport and entertainment. Why the couple chose simplicity Despite their glamorous lifestyle, Georgina has previously spoken about wanting a more personal family celebration rather than an elaborate wedding. She explained that as a child she had imagined a grand wedding involving a palace, a large procession and a long bridal dress. Her priorities changed over time, however, and she came to value a quiet celebration with her partner and children more than luxury or spectacle. The intimate ceremony appears to have reflected that wish, keeping the focus firmly on family. Is Ronaldo nearing retirement? The wedding news also coincides with renewed attention surrounding Ronaldo’s football future. At 41, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has indicated that the 2026-27 season could potentially be the final campaign of his remarkable career. Ronaldo has said he wants to leave football with a strong legacy, although he has not formally announced his retirement.
