Truckers End Laem Chabang Rally, Vow to Keep Pressing Government on Fuel Crisis

CHONBURI — Transport operators who gathered near Laem Chabang Port on Wednesday have dispersed following a symbolic truck convoy aimed at forcing the government to take immediate action against soaring fuel prices and domestic shortages that are paralyzing the logistics industry.

Pump Prices to Rise Starting Wednesday as Government Adjusts Fuel Subsidies

The Land Transport Federation of Thailand mobilized more than 1,000 trucks along Sukhumvit Road, creating intermittent congestion on inbound routes to Chon Buri and Pattaya. Officers from Laem Chabang police station and the Highway Police were deployed to manage traffic flow and assist motorists caught in the delays.

At approximately 12:30pm, the convoy proceeded toward the entrance of Laem Chabang Port in a symbolic procession, demanding that the government accelerate solutions to problems crippling the transport sector and affecting the wider public, according to Manager Online.

Thongyoo Khongkhan, president of the federation, explained that the gathering was intended to demonstrate the tangible impact of high fuel prices and shortages that have plagued operators since the Middle East conflict disrupted global oil markets. He stressed that truck drivers and logistics companies are experiencing the crisis firsthand while government assurances ring hollow.

The federation leader called on authorities to implement price caps at refineries, depots and retail pumps, and to adopt concrete measures for better management of domestic fuel reserves. He noted that without intervention, the situation will continue deteriorating.

Unaddressed Petitions and Contradictory Messaging

Mr Thongyoo revealed that the federation had previously submitted a formal petition to the government, but no meaningful progress had been made on their demands. He pointed out a disconnect between official statements and on-the-ground reality, noting that government assurances of sufficient fuel supplies contradict the struggles faced by truck operators attempting to secure affordable diesel.

Criticism of Pricing Mechanisms

The transport leader also raised concerns about Thailand’s oil pricing structure, particularly the reliance on Singapore market benchmarks to determine domestic depot prices. He suggested this mechanism may contribute to price volatility and inflate costs for logistics operators. Mr Thongyoo implied that refiners, retailers and intermediaries could be capitalizing on the current situation while end users suffer.

“Those positioned in the middle appear to be benefiting while transport operators and the public bear the burden,” he stated, calling for greater transparency in how fuel prices are calculated and transmitted through the supply chain.

Ongoing Pressure

Despite dispersing from Wednesday’s rally, the group affirmed their commitment to continue pressing for action until the government introduces clear and measurable measures to resolve the crisis. The federation has not ruled out additional demonstrations should their concerns remain unaddressed.

The protest underscores mounting frustration within Thailand’s transport sector, which has been severely impacted by rising fuel costs and supply uncertainties stemming from global geopolitical tensions. Industry leaders warn that without government intervention, escalating logistics expenses will inevitably translate into higher consumer prices across the economy.

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has attracted approximately US$ 6.24 billion in net Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from FY24 to July-April FY26 since the establishment of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), according to data from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). The Minister Incharge of SIFC stated that gross FDI inflows during the same period stood at approximately US$ 10.41 billion, highlighting investor confidence in Pakistan’s investment regime. April 2024: Highest Monthly FDI in 51 Months   According to SBP data released in May 2024, FDI inflows surged 172% year-on-year (YoY) to $358.84 million in April 2024, compared to $131.9 million in April 2023. This marks the highest monthly FDI inflow in 51 months. On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, FDI jumped 39%, up from $258.04 million in March 2024. For the first 10 months of FY24 (July-April), total FDI inflows reached $1.46 billion, compared to $1.35 billion in the same period of FY23. Top Investors & Sectors Country-wise:   1.     An Israeli airstrike killed a father, his wife and their four children in Gaza City on Tuesday, setting their home on fire, according to health officials, in the latest deadly incident since a US backed ceasefire took hold more than nine months ago. Medics said the strike hit the family’s house in the Sabra neighborhood, killing Firas Al Masri, his wife Salsabeel, their three daughters and their son. The Israeli military confirmed carrying out the strike, saying it had targeted a Hamas militant and that it was still assessing the outcome of the attack. A video obtained by a news agency showed rescue workers battling fires inside the house and carrying out bodies wrapped in white shrouds. Masri’s father, Abu Yusuf Al Masri, said the explosion occurred while the family slept, describing his grief over the loss of his son, daughter in law and grandchildren. He said rescuers could not save the children and grandchildren from the flames and destruction, and that around five or six people died, most of them women and children, without warning and without mercy. Standing outside the family home, he said no place in Gaza offers relative calm or safety anymore. Heavy toll since October The Israeli military said it carried out four separate strikes since Friday that killed four militants from Hamas and Islamic Jihad, three of whom it said had taken part in the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that triggered the war and involved the seizure of Israeli hostages. Later Tuesday, two additional Israeli airstrikes hit a vehicle in central Gaza and an association building in Gaza City, killing at least six more people and wounding others, according to Palestinian medics, bringing Tuesday’s overall death toll to 12. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on either of these later strikes. These latest deaths add to a toll exceeding 1,160 Palestinians, most of them civilians, killed in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect in October, according to health officials in Gaza. Hamas typically does not disclose its own casualty figures. The truce halted large scale fighting but has not stopped near daily Israeli strikes across the territory. Israel says these operations target militants. Four Israeli soldiers have died at the hands of militants in Gaza during the same period. Mediators including Egypt, Qatar, Turkey and the United States have continued working to advance a plan put forward by President Donald Trump aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza, which calls for Hamas to disarm and for Israeli forces to withdraw, though little progress has emerged so far. The war began when Hamas led fighters attacked communities in southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking roughly 250 hostages, according to Israeli figures. Israel’s subsequent military campaign has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials. Nearly all of Gaza’s population of about two million people now lives crowded along a narrow strip of coastal land, largely in makeshift tents or damaged buildings, enduring severe conditions under continued Hamas control. The continued strikes highlight how the ceasefire, despite formally ending large scale combat, has failed to bring lasting safety to civilians in Gaza, with families like the Al Masris bearing the human cost of attacks that Israel says are aimed at militants but that have repeatedly killed women and children in residential areas. International mediators continue pressing for progress on disarmament and withdrawal terms, though the persistent violence has raised doubts about how quickly, if at all, conditions on the ground might meaningfully improve for Gaza’s remaining population.
