University Road corridor to be completed by Septem…

Sindh Senior Minister for Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that 80 to 85 per cent of the work on the corridor along Karachi’s University Road has been completed.

He said the remaining work is expected to be finished by September 15, after which the road project will be fully completed.

Sharjeel Memon made the remarks during a visit to the BRT Red Line project. He reviewed the ongoing construction work and the traffic situation along University Road.

The minister said traffic is currently moving smoothly on the road and that there are no major disruptions to the flow of vehicles.

He also announced that a large number of double-decker buses are expected to arrive in Karachi next month. Electric vehicles will also be introduced as part of efforts to improve the city’s public transport system.

According to the minister, the Sindh government has already approved 500 electric buses. He added that Pink Scooties would soon be made available for women as part of initiatives aimed at improving mobility and transportation options.

Sharjeel Memon said the provincial government was working on several public service projects across different sectors. He maintained that the Pakistan Peoples Party comes to power through the public mandate and focuses on completing development and welfare projects after assuming office.

Speaking about Thar, the minister said the region has extensive coal reserves that can be used to generate relatively inexpensive electricity. He said Thar coal could also be utilised to meet the energy requirements of power plants across Pakistan.

He further highlighted what he described as the Pakistan Peoples Party’s contribution to the country, including its role in Pakistan’s development as a nuclear power.

Discussing the performance of the Sindh government, Memon said work was continuing around the clock in different departments. He said significant progress had been made on a housing programme aimed at constructing 2.1 million homes, with a large number of houses already completed.

The minister described the housing initiative as one of the largest projects of its kind in the world.

He also referred to the Shahrah-e-Bhutto, saying heavy traffic on the newly constructed road demonstrated its importance and success. He claimed Sindh was the only province focusing on practical development rather than political propaganda.

On Karachi’s transport needs, Memon said public transport services would be expanded across the city without discrimination.

He said voters could support any political party, but the government would continue to provide transport facilities in every part of Karachi.

The minister also highlighted developments in Sindh’s healthcare sector. He said the provincial government was providing free and modern medical facilities and had introduced several initiatives before similar measures were adopted elsewhere.

Memon also pointed to the province’s air ambulance service, saying the facility had already been operational for some time.

Eva Mendes calls out fake AI photo of Gosling and Depp at comic-con

Eva Mendes has called out a viral AI-generated image that falsely showed Ryan Gosling and Johnny Depp posing together at San Diego Comic-Con. The 52-year-old actress spoke up this past weekend, right after her longtime partner Gosling was revealed as Marvel’s new Ghost Rider. Both Gosling and Depp did attend Comic-Con last week. But they showed up on different days and never actually crossed paths. The AI-made image told a different story, showing the pair walking side by side through the convention crowd. Depp appeared in character as Ebenezer Scrooge, while another figure, tagged online as Slopaxo, also showed up in the doctored photo. The image came from an account called @opavisions. Its caption claimed that watching Gosling, Depp, and Slopaxo “moving through the crowds like the unlikeliest best-friend trio” was one of the weekend’s best moments. It described candid walks, fan interactions, and spontaneous stops, framing the whole thing as a genuine, memorable sighting. Mendes was not having it. She commented directly on the post: “FAKE. Please let People know when you are putting out AI.” Her message was blunt and left no room for confusion. The account responded quickly, adding a disclaimer: “DISCLAIMER: THIS WAS AI***.” It also thanked Mendes for speaking up, promising to be clearer about AI content going forward, and voiced appreciation for both her and Gosling’s careers. In a separate comment, the account issued a short apology: “Ok we will sorry.” Meanwhile, Depp’s actual Comic-Con appearance last Thursday turned heads for real. He looked almost unrecognizable dressed as Ebenezer Scrooge, promoting his upcoming film “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol,” set to hit theaters November 13. The panel took place near a snow-covered mock storefront built in San Diego’s Gaslamp district, adding to the film’s wintry atmosphere. A source close to the event said Depp received a warm reception from fans, some of whom dressed up as characters from his most famous roles. The incident adds to a growing pattern of AI-generated celebrity images spreading online before being debunked, highlighting how quickly convincing fakes can circulate and how important it is becoming for creators to label AI content clearly from the start. https://www.instagram.com/p/DbRGQNOzbkR/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

Lebanon becomes first Middle Eastern country to abolish death penalty

Lebanon’s parliament has voted to abolish capital punishment, making it the first nation in the Middle East to formally end the practice. While Lebanon has maintained a de facto moratorium on executions since 2004, courts continued to hand down death sentences for major crimes including murder, terrorism, and espionage. Prior to the vote, human rights group Amnesty International estimated that 85 individuals remained on death row across the country. Under the new legislation, capital punishment will be replaced by life imprisonment with aggravated hard labour. Lebanese Justice Minister Adel Nassar described the vote as “historic”, noting that the legal existence of the death penalty had previously hampered Beirut’s ability to secure the extradition of criminal suspects from nations where capital punishment is outlawed. International observers and human rights organisations welcomed the landmark decision. The European Union stated that Lebanon was setting a powerful example for the region, while French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot praised the vote as a courageous step that upholds democratic values. Human Rights Watch also lauded the law, calling it a monumental victory for human rights in the Middle East.

NASA’s roman space telescope to explore dark ene…

NASA is preparing to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope a new observatory designed to explore some of the universe’s biggest mysteries. The nearly $4 billion telescope is scheduled to launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Roman Space Telescope is expected to expand scientists’ understanding of dark matter, dark energy, gravity and planets beyond our solar system. It will complement the work already carried out by the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes. Unlike telescopes that focus closely on individual objects Roman will be able to survey enormous sections of the sky quickly. During its main mission, scientists expect it to observe billions of galaxies. These observations could reveal how galaxies formed, how cosmic structures changed over time and how the universe has expanded. A major objective of the mission is to investigate dark energy the mysterious phenomenon believed to be responsible for the accelerating expansion of the universe. Researchers also want to learn more about dark matter which cannot be seen directly but affects stars and galaxies through gravity. Scientists will use Roman to study gravitational lensing a phenomenon in which massive objects bend light traveling through space. These measurements could provide new tests of Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity and help researchers determine whether our current understanding of gravity works across enormous distances. The telescope will also search for exoplanets which are worlds orbiting stars outside our solar system. Researchers expect the mission to identify thousands of new planets and gather information about how planetary systems are formed. Roman will also test technology that could eventually allow scientists to directly image some nearby exoplanets. After launch the telescope will travel to Lagrange Point 2, approximately 1.6 million kilometers from Earth. The James Webb Space Telescope operates in the same region while Hubble orbits much closer to Earth. NASA has planned an initial five-year mission for Roman. However, the telescope could potentially continue operating for several more years if it has enough fuel. Named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief astronomer the telescope represents another major step in humanity’s effort to understand the universe. Its discoveries could reshape scientists’ knowledge of cosmic evolution, gravity, dark matter, dark energy and distant planetary systems.

JI threatens nationwide shutdown over petroleum le…

Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has warned the government that his party could expand its ongoing protests into a nationwide wheel-jam and shutter-down strike if the petroleum levy is not abolished. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad on Thursday, Rehman said the nationwide strike could begin after August 26, following 12th Rabiul Awwal. He said the party would also establish protest camps in different parts of the country as part of its campaign. If the government failed to respond to its demands, he warned that JI could consider marching towards Islamabad on foot. The JI chief said he would address the party’s sit-in in Lahore, while a public gathering was scheduled at its Karachi protest site on Friday. Rehman said rising inflation had placed a heavy burden on ordinary citizens. He criticised the petroleum levy, describing it as an unfair additional charge on consumers. According to him, consumers were paying around Rs80 per litre under the levy. He claimed the charge was originally introduced to support the modernisation of Pakistan’s oil refineries but that the government had collected more than Rs8 trillion through it while spending less than Rs100 billion on refinery upgrades. He called for the immediate abolition of the levy and urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to reduce petrol and diesel prices by Rs130 per litre. The government recently revised fuel prices, reducing the price of high-speed diesel while increasing the price of petrol. Rehman said the JI’s protests in Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar were gaining support from traders, religious scholars, young people and members of civil society. He said the demonstrations had grown beyond the petroleum levy issue and were now highlighting broader public concerns. He said JI would not attend government briefings as part of negotiations. Instead, he demanded that government representatives visit the protesters and engage with them directly. The JI leader also referred to the party’s previous campaign against independent power producers. He claimed that negotiations following that protest resulted in the closure of several power projects and new agreements that saved the national exchequer Rs3.36 trillion. He called for a review of the remaining independent power producers, arguing that negotiations could help bring down electricity costs within 12 to 18 months. Rehman also criticised the government over the country’s growing debt, taxes and electricity prices. He claimed Pakistan’s total debt had reached Rs98 trillion and urged authorities to reduce reliance on interest-based financing. He called for greater austerity in government spending and suggested limiting official vehicles to engines of up to 1,300cc. The JI emir also criticised what he described as excessive privileges for the political elite while ordinary citizens continued to face rising living costs and taxes. On provincial matters, Rehman accused successive governments in Sindh and Punjab of failing to resolve major economic and social problems. He also criticised Punjab’s education policy and raised concerns over the outsourcing of thousands of schools.
