US imposes fresh sanctions on Mahan Air allies

The United States has imposed fresh sanctions on an international network accused of supporting Iran’s Mahan Air, alleging the airline has played a key role in transporting personnel, weapons, and drones linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

In a statement, the US Treasury Department announced sanctions against six individuals and entities based in China, India, Russia, and Iran. The targeted network is accused of facilitating operations for Mahan Air despite existing US and European sanctions on the carrier.

According to US officials, several of the sanctioned companies acted as sales agents for Mahan Air, helping the airline maintain international operations and evade restrictions imposed by Western governments.

Washington has repeatedly accused Mahan Air of providing logistical support to the IRGC by transporting military personnel, weapons, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Iran has consistently denied similar allegations in the past.

The latest sanctions come amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran following recent drone attacks targeting gas-carrying vessels at Egypt’s Mediterranean port of Damietta. The incident has raised concerns that the confrontation between the two countries could expand into a new area of conflict.

The US said the new measures are aimed at disrupting financial and commercial networks that support Iran’s sanctioned aviation sector and limiting its ability to conduct activities viewed as a threat to regional security.

    Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, Tipu Usman, has urged the international community to play a more proactive role in resolving the Kashmir dispute, declaring that “justice for Kashmir begins with implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions” and reaffirming that Pakistan’s support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir “remains unwavering and unconditional.” He was addressing a seminar organised by the Pakistan High Commission in London to observe Youm-e-Istehsal Kashmir, marking the anniversary of India’s August 5, 2019 decision to revoke the special status of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The event brought together British parliamentarians, diplomats, community leaders and members of the British Pakistani and Kashmiri diaspora, who condemned India’s revocation of Article 370 and reiterated support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination. In his keynote address, Tipu Usman called upon the international community, particularly the United Kingdom, to stand on the side of justice by urging India to reverse the unilateral measures introduced on August 5, 2019, restore the rights and special status of Jammu and Kashmir, and honour the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions. “Pakistan’s support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir remains unwavering and unconditional,” he said, adding that a peaceful and lasting settlement of the dispute must be achieved in accordance with the wishes of the Kashmiri people as reflected in the UN resolutions. The seminar was attended by Lord Qurban Hussain, Baroness Nosheena Mobarik, Afzal Khan MP and Adnan Hussain MP, alongside prominent community figures including Councillor Yasmine Dar, UK-Pakistan Kashmiri Councillors Forum Chairman Liaqat Ali MBE, Jammu Kashmir Self Determination Movement International Chairman Raja Najabat Hussain and former Deputy Mayor of Peterborough Mohammad Nadeem. Speakers strongly criticised India’s constitutional changes of August 2019, describing them as illegal and unconstitutional. They expressed concern over the human rights situation in IIOJK and called for an immediate end to alleged rights violations. Participants stressed that the Kashmir dispute remains an internationally recognised issue that should be resolved through dialogue and in line with UN Security Council resolutions. The seminar also proposed a strategic roadmap to enhance engagement with policymakers, parliamentarians and international stakeholders to build support for a just and lasting resolution of the Kashmir dispute. Messages from the President of Pakistan, the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister were read out during the event, reiterating Pakistan’s continued diplomatic, political and moral support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The ceremony concluded with participants observing a minute’s silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the Kashmir conflict.

    Four K-P Heritage sites added to UNESCO tentative list

    PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has gained further international recognition for its cultural and historical heritage after four important sites from the province were included in the UNESCO World Heritage Centre’s Tentative List. Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Information and Public Relations Minister Shafi Jan described the development as a significant achievement for the provincial government, saying the recognition would help draw international attention to the province’s diverse archaeological, architectural and cultural legacy. The sites added to the tentative list include Bhamaala in Haripur, Sethi House and Gor Gathri in Peshawar, and Barikot in Swat. According to the minister, the inclusion of these locations on the UNESCO list would provide greater international visibility to K-P’s historic sites and highlight their importance as part of the region’s rich cultural heritage. Recognition of K-P’s historical legacy Shafi Jan said Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa possessed a heritage that reflected centuries of civilisation, cultural interaction and historical development. He noted that the newly listed sites represented different aspects of the province’s past, ranging from archaeological remains to historic buildings and urban heritage. The minister said the addition of the four sites was not only a source of pride for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa but could also contribute to efforts aimed at preserving the province’s heritage for future generations. He said the provincial government was committed to protecting historical locations from deterioration and ensuring that their cultural significance was properly documented and promoted. Focus on preservation and promotion Shafi Jan said the government was working to strengthen measures for the preservation, restoration and promotion of historical and archaeological sites across the province. He emphasised that cultural heritage should be viewed as a valuable national and provincial asset rather than simply as remnants of the past. “Our rich cultural heritage is our pride and a trust for future generations,” he said, stressing the need for sustained efforts to protect historic sites. The minister added that the provincial government wanted to improve the visibility of K-P’s heritage at both national and international levels. Potential for cultural tourism The inclusion of the sites on UNESCO’s Tentative List could also provide an opportunity to promote cultural tourism in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The province is home to numerous archaeological and historical locations associated with different periods and civilisations. Greater international recognition could help attract researchers, historians, archaeologists and tourists interested in the region’s history. Officials believe that improved preservation and promotion of these sites could also support local economies by creating opportunities for tourism-related businesses and services. However, greater recognition also places additional responsibility on authorities to ensure that the sites are properly protected, maintained and presented to visitors. Government commitment The minister said the provincial administration, under the vision of founding chairman Imran Khan and the leadership of Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, would continue efforts to preserve and promote Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s cultural assets. He maintained that protecting historical sites required long-term planning, proper conservation measures and cooperation between government institutions, heritage experts and local communities. The latest additions to the UNESCO Tentative List have therefore been welcomed by the provincial government as an important step towards placing K-P’s historical heritage on the international cultural map.

    NCCIA cracks down on cybercrime, arrests 4 suspect…

    LAHORE: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Punjab has intensified its campaign against cybercrime, arresting four suspects in coordinated operations carried out in Lahore, Faisalabad and Multan. The arrests are linked to alleged cases of online harassment, blackmail and the misuse of social media platforms. According to the agency, legal proceedings have been initiated on the basis of digital evidence collected during the investigations. Authorities have also seized mobile phones and other electronic devices from the suspects, all of which have been sent for forensic examination to support the ongoing inquiries. In Lahore, officials arrested Haroon Qureshi, who is accused of repeatedly targeting women through various social media platforms by allegedly harassing, threatening and intimidating them. Investigators are examining the digital material recovered from his devices to determine the full extent of the alleged offences. In a separate operation in Faisalabad, NCCIA apprehended Abdul Rehman and Muhammad Ayaz. Preliminary investigations suggest the pair allegedly blackmailed a married couple using objectionable digital content and are accused of extorting money from them. During the raid, investigators recovered two mobile phones, WhatsApp accounts and alleged objectionable digital material related to several women. The seized evidence has been forwarded for forensic analysis to identify additional victims and any wider criminal network. Meanwhile, in Multan, authorities arrested Farhad Abbas on allegations of sharing a woman’s private photographs and videos on social media and using them to blackmail her. Investigators are reviewing the suspect’s digital records to identify possible accomplices and determine whether more victims may be involved. The NCCIA said forensic examination of the recovered digital evidence is continuing in all cases and investigations are being conducted in accordance with legal procedures. The agency also urged the public, particularly women, to report incidents of online harassment, blackmail, fake social media accounts or any other form of cybercrime without delay so that prompt legal action can be taken against those responsible.

    MUZAFFARABAD: With the final phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) general elections just days away, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has stepped up its campaign in Rawalakot Division, expressing confidence that it can secure a two-thirds majority in the 45-member Legislative Assembly. The party held a major election rally in Haveli on Friday as campaigning intensified ahead of the August 10 polling in Bagh and Haveli. The final phase will conclude the three-stage electoral process and determine the composition of the next AJK government. Addressing supporters, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah claimed that the results of the first two phases reflected strong public support for the PML-N. He said the party expected voters in Haveli and the three constituencies of Bagh to further strengthen its position and help it achieve the numbers required for a two-thirds majority. Sanaullah pledged that a PML-N-led government would implement its election promises and accelerate development projects in collaboration with the federal government. Referring to commitments made by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during the campaign, he said development initiatives similar to those undertaken in Punjab would be introduced in AJK. He also said PML-N President Nawaz Sharif would personally monitor major development projects in the region. Rejecting opposition allegations of electoral manipulation, Sanaullah described the first two phases as peaceful and transparent, dismissing claims of rigging as unfounded. Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam also addressed the rally, assuring voters that a future PML-N government would focus on public welfare, infrastructure and improved services. He said road connectivity and other development projects in areas close to the Line of Control would be given special priority, with the government seeking to improve infrastructure and public facilities across the region. The August 10 vote in Bagh and Haveli is expected to play a crucial role in determining whether the PML-N can translate its campaign momentum into a two-thirds majority and take the lead in forming the next AJK government.

    ISLAMABAD: A joint symposium on “Xi Jinping Thought on Party Building” was held in Islamabad on Wednesday, bringing together senior Pakistani and Chinese officials, diplomats, parliamentarians, academics and representatives of think tanks to discuss China’s approach to political organisation, governance and institutional development. The symposium was organised by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Pakistan in collaboration with the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS). Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani attended the event as chief guest. The Chinese delegation included Liu Daxiu, Head of Delegation and First-Class Inspector at the Party Building Research Institute of the Organization Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, and Zheng Huan, Professor of Party Building at the Central Party School of the CPC Central Committee. Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong also addressed the gathering. While adressing, Pakistani and Chinese representatives reaffirmed the longstanding partnership between the two countries, noting that political and institutional exchanges have expanded alongside cooperation in economic, infrastructure and development-related fields. They further added that dialogue between political parties has become an important pillar of the Pakistan-China strategic relationship. Speakers outlined the evolution of Xi Jinping Thought on Party Building, describing it as a doctrine centred on strengthening the Communist Party of China through disciplined leadership, rigorous internal governance, organisational cohesion and ideological development. They said the framework seeks to ensure the Party’s long-term capacity to govern while maintaining accountability, institutional resilience and public trust. CPC’s efforts to curb corruption and maintain discipline, while strengthening the organisation at different levels were also discussed. The recurring theme throughout the symposium was that China’s development should not be viewed solely through the lens of economic growth. Pakistani and Chinese speakers argued that the country’s transformation has also been shaped by strong political organisation, consistent policy implementation and institutional continuity. At the same time, Chinese experts stressed that these experiences were not being presented as a model for direct replication, noting that every country must pursue its own path according to its national circumstances. Participants also reflected on the broader relevance of the CPC’s experience for political parties worldwide, discussing issues such as governance capacity, organisational resilience, leadership development and the ability of institutions to translate policy into tangible results. Chairman Senate Yousaf Raza Gilani, Ambassador Jiang Zaidong and IRS President Jauhar Saleem affirmed the importance of sustained engagement between the two countries and welcomed continued exchanges on governance, public policy and institutional development. The symposium concluded with an interactive session in which participants discussed the relevance of Party building, leadership and governance reforms to contemporary political challenges and future Pakistan-China cooperation.
