Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan to establish new defence cooperation mechanisms

ANKARA: Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are set to establish new political and military coordination mechanisms following the signing of a landmark joint defence agreement, as the three countries move to strengthen strategic cooperation amid growing security concerns in the region.

Türkiye’s Defence Ministry said on Thursday that the framework agreed by the three countries would bring senior political and military leadership into a structured mechanism aimed at enhancing coordination on defence and security matters.

The three nations signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement on August 7, marking a significant development in their security relations. The agreement comes at a time of heightened tensions across the Middle East, with the escalation of regional hostilities raising security concerns among Gulf states and other countries in the region.

Under the agreement, an armed attack against any one of the three countries would be treated as an attack against all members. The provision establishes a collective-defence commitment similar in principle to the collective security arrangement contained in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

High-level political and military coordination

According to the Turkish Defence Ministry, the new mechanisms will involve the defence ministers, foreign ministers and military chiefs of Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

The arrangement is expected to provide the three countries with a regular platform for consultations on regional security developments, defence policy and potential threats. It could also facilitate closer coordination between their armed forces and government institutions.

The agreement reflects the growing strategic importance of cooperation between the three Muslim-majority countries, particularly as regional security challenges continue to evolve.

Joint military exercises planned

The Turkish ministry also said the three countries were planning joint military exercises under the new defence framework.

Such exercises could provide opportunities for their armed forces to improve interoperability, exchange operational experience and strengthen their ability to coordinate during potential security crises.

Defence cooperation is also expected to extend beyond military exercises. The Turkish side said the agreement could pave the way for greater collaboration in the defence industry, including joint production, technology sharing and other forms of industrial cooperation.

The expanded defence-industry partnership could allow the three countries to explore opportunities for developing and producing defence equipment together while sharing technical expertise and capabilities.

Agreement follows rising regional tensions

The pact was signed against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East, which have raised concerns over the security of Gulf countries and critical energy infrastructure.

The escalation has also highlighted the importance of collective security arrangements and closer coordination among regional powers.

For Pakistan, the agreement represents another step towards strengthening defence and strategic ties with Türkiye and Saudi Arabia. Islamabad has traditionally maintained close military and diplomatic relations with both countries.

The agreement is therefore expected to broaden cooperation from traditional bilateral defence relations towards a more structured trilateral framework involving political consultations, military coordination and defence-industrial collaboration.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has also clarified the scope and intent of the Makkah agreement, stressing the nature of the arrangement and its broader security objectives.

The three countries are now expected to work out the details of the new mechanisms, including the structure of ministerial consultations, military coordination and proposed joint exercises.

Hesson says National Champions Cup will sharpen Pakistan’s World Cup 2027 preparations

Pakistan white ball head coach Mike Hesson said the upcoming National Champions Cup will play an important role in preparing the squad for the ICC World Cup 2027, expressing confidence in the tournament ahead of its start next month. The competition begins on August 18 at Multan Cricket Stadium, with all seven matches scheduled as day night fixtures. The 50 over List A tournament will feature four sides, Pakistan Greens, Pakistan Whites, Pakistan Blues and Pakistan Gold, and will officially open the 2026-27 domestic cricket season. Teams will compete in a single league round robin format, with the top two sides advancing to the final. Speaking to reporters, Hesson explained why the domestic season is starting with a 50 over List A event rather than another format. He said the four team tournament was specifically organized as part of Pakistan’s build up toward the World Cup. Hesson said he expects every player involved to get a genuine chance to show what they can do in what he called a highly competitive event. He said fans can expect quality cricket throughout, with each player given an opportunity to perform on a meaningful stage. The coach added that the team management is focused on maximizing the number of List A matches available to players ahead of Pakistan’s upcoming assignments, saying the coaching staff is planning the schedule specifically to create as many playing opportunities as possible. Looking further ahead to the World Cup itself, Hesson pointed to Pakistan’s historical strength in major ICC events, saying he hopes the team can deliver another strong campaign when the tournament arrives in 2027. He said selectors have put together well balanced squads across all four domestic sides and voiced confidence that the tournament would help several standout performers emerge ahead of the World Cup selection process.

Pakistan defeat South Korea 3-1 in second hockey Test

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan continued their impressive run in the four-match hockey Test series by defeating South Korea 3-1 in the second encounter, securing a commanding 2-0 lead in the series. The home side delivered another disciplined performance, building on the momentum from their opening victory to outclass the visitors with clinical finishing and solid defensive play. Pakistan’s star performer was Abubakar, who struck twice to put his team in control, while Abdul Rehman added the third goal to seal another convincing victory. South Korea managed to score once, but failed to recover as Pakistan maintained control throughout the contest. The victory follows Pakistan’s 3-1 triumph in the opening Test, giving the Green Shirts consecutive wins and putting them in a strong position ahead of the remaining two matches of the series. The ongoing series also marks a significant moment for Pakistan hockey, with international hockey returning to the country after nearly two decades. South Korea’s visit has been welcomed by fans and officials alike, who see it as a positive step toward reviving international hockey in Pakistan. Pakistan displayed greater composure in midfield, created more scoring opportunities and converted their chances effectively. The performances of Abubakar and Abdul Rehman have been particularly encouraging, highlighting the emergence of young talent capable of strengthening Pakistan’s hockey squad in future international competitions. Pakistan’s Foreign office launches evening s…

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has introduced an evening shift for consular services, extending working hours from 8am to 8pm on weekdays to enhance accessibility and convenience for citizens, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar announced on Monday . According to an official announcement shared by Dar on X, the expanded hours represent a significant increase in service availability, allowing citizens to access consular facilities over a 12-hour window, Monday through Friday . The initiative is part of the ministry’s broader efforts to enhance efficiency and ensure citizen-centric service delivery . Previously, consular services at MOFA were limited to regular government working hours, requiring citizens to visit offices within a designated daytime schedule . The restricted timings often posed challenges for individuals, particularly overseas Pakistanis and working professionals who faced difficulties accessing services during conventional office hours . Fazlur Rehman urges dialogue to end AJK crisis

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has urged the federal government to address the ongoing unrest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) through dialogue, stressing that reconciliation is the only path to a lasting solution. In a video message shared on the party’s X account on Saturday, Fazlur Rehman called on the government and state institutions to recognise the seriousness of the situation instead of responding with force. He said authorities should work to restore peace and stability rather than allowing further bloodshed. “The government and state institutions must understand the gravity of the crisis. Instead of turning our homeland into a place of violence, they should focus on healing divisions through meaningful dialogue,” he said. His remarks came after violent clashes were reported in Rawalakot between law enforcement personnel and protesters affiliated with the banned Jammu and Kashmir Awami Action Committee (JAAC). Reports circulating on social media claimed multiple casualties and injuries, with both security officials and the JAAC alleging loss of lives. Fazlur Rehman said the JAAC’s sit-in had continued for more than two months. He recalled that after tensions intensified on June 5, the committee had formally requested him to mediate between the protesters and the government. According to him, he accepted the role and remained in contact with both sides through JUI-F AJK chief Maulana Saeed Yousaf Khan and Sardar Kamran Azam Khan. The JUI-F chief expressed concern over the situation faced by residents of AJK, saying people expect their government to protect them rather than leave them living in fear. He alleged that women, children and families had endured months of insecurity while the authorities failed to address their concerns. He further claimed that force had been used against unarmed protesters and alleged that, according to the information available to him, the death toll had reached around 80 people. However, no official confirmation has been issued regarding that figure. Despite the violence, Fazlur Rehman appealed to the JAAC leadership and protesters to remain peaceful and avoid any action that could worsen the situation. He urged them to allow more time for mediation efforts, expressing hope that a fair and lasting political settlement could still be achieved. He also criticised the government’s approach, claiming that although the protesters had shown confidence in his mediation efforts, the authorities had not taken the initiative seriously and had instead relied on force rather than negotiations. Warning of wider implications, Fazlur Rehman said the movement had gained support across Kashmir as well as among Pakistanis and the Kashmiri diaspora, particularly in Europe. The recent violence has drawn condemnation from political parties and human rights organisations. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) expressed deep concern over reports of deaths and injuries, stressing that maintaining law and order should never come at the expense of the right to life or the freedoms of peaceful assembly and expression. The commission called for a prompt, impartial and independent investigation into the incidents. Opposition parties, including PTI, also demanded an independent judicial inquiry into the clashes, while other political groups criticised what they described as the excessive use of force against protesters. The current dispute is linked to long-standing demands by the JAAC, which has been seeking constitutional and governance reforms in AJK. Among its key demands are the abolition of 12 reserved seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly allocated to Kashmiri refugees and the removal of the existing quota system. Although the government and the JAAC reached an agreement after protests last year to establish a high-level committee to review the issue of refugee seats, negotiations have since stalled. The JAAC continues to insist on abolishing the reserved seats, while the government remains opposed to the proposal.

CM Punjab Rahmat Card enters digital disbursement …

LAHORE: Following the successful computerized ballot held on June 23, 2026, the CM Punjab Rahmat Card initiative has entered its next major milestone with JazzCash commencing digital disbursements to selected widows and orphans across Punjab. The launch of digital payments marks the successful transition from beneficiary selection to financial assistance delivery, completing another key phase of one of Punjab’s most technologically advanced social welfare initiatives. The CM Punjab Rahmat Card is a collaborative initiative of the Government of Punjab, Zakat & Ushr Department, Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), NADRA, Punjab Social Protection Authority (PSPA), Urban Unit, JazzCash, and other stakeholders to digitize the complete lifecycle of welfare assistance from citizen application and eligibility verification to transparent beneficiary selection and digital financial disbursement. During the computerized ballot ceremony, officials acknowledged the successful completion of the project’s technology implementation. Special Assistant to the Chief Minister (SACM) Rashid Iqbal Nasrullah appreciated the PITB team for its continuous technical support throughout the implementation of the initiative within stringent timelines. He also specially acknowledged the prompt guidance and support extended by PITB Chairman Faisal Yousaf at various stages of the project whenever required. Secretary, Zakat & Ushr Department, Irfan Ahmad Sandhu also commended the dedicated efforts of PITB in designing, developing, and operationalizing the comprehensive digital ecosystem supporting the Programme. He appreciated PITB’s commitment to ensuring the timely completion of all assigned deliverables despite challenging timelines. Participants observed that the CM Punjab Rahmat Card is the first initiative of its kind undertaken by the Zakat & Ushr Department in terms of both scale and technological sophistication. By replacing conventional manual processes with integrated digital workflows, the Programme has introduced unprecedented levels of transparency, efficiency, accountability, and speed in the delivery of welfare assistance. As the technology implementation partner, PITB designed, developed, and operationalized the complete digital platform supporting the initiative. The digital ecosystem includes an online citizen application portal, an Android mobile application, a dedicated helpline for application support, inquiries, and complaints, a Beneficiary Management System, a multi-agency digital verification engine integrated with NADRA and Punjab Socio-Economic Registry (PSER) databases, automated scrutiny and eligibility determination workflows, a computerized district-wise balloting mechanism, and real-time monitoring and decision-support administrative dashboards. The end-to-end digital workflow enabled citizens to submit applications online, which were then verified through multiple government databases, assessed against approved eligibility criteria, allocated according to district quotas, and finally selected through a transparent computerized ballot before being transferred for digital disbursement through JazzCash. The CM Punjab Rahmat Card initiative stands as a successful example of how digital public infrastructure can enable multiple government institutions to operate through a unified technology platform, facilitating data-driven decision-making, automated eligibility verification, transparent Programme execution, and secure digital payments. The project reinforces the Government of Punjab’s commitment to delivering technology-enabled, scalable, and accountable citizen services that improve the lives of vulnerable segments of society.

Kangana Ranaut’s viral NEET claim dismissed as fake

Actor and politician Kangana Ranaut has once again found herself at the center of online discussions after a viral post falsely claimed that she had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to appoint her as India’s Education Minister. The statement quickly spread across social media platforms, leading many users to believe it was genuine because it closely resembled Kangana’s usual writing style. However, the viral quote is fabricated and was never shared by the actress. According to the fake post, Kangana allegedly said she understood the importance of education and wanted to become the country’s Education Minister. The message also included a satirical proposal related to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), claiming that students who watched her films in theatres would receive extra marks in the medical entrance examination. The fabricated statement read that she wanted to be appointed Education Minister because she was “the first person to show people the truth that India attained independence in 2014.” It further joked that awarding additional NEET marks to students who watched her movies would help end her string of box-office flops while also benefiting students. The post gained significant attention online, with many users sharing screenshots and commenting on the supposed remarks. Some believed the statement was authentic due to its resemblance to Kangana’s outspoken social media posts, while others questioned whether it had been created as satire. Despite its widespread circulation, the claim has been confirmed to be false. Kangana did not make the statement, nor did she post it on any of her verified social media accounts, including Instagram. There is no evidence that she requested to become India’s Education Minister or proposed any changes to the NEET examination in the manner described. The viral message appears to have been carefully crafted to imitate Kangana’s distinctive online tone, making it convincing enough to mislead many social media users. Such edited or fabricated posts often spread rapidly, particularly when they involve well-known public figures and controversial topics. The incident serves as another reminder of how quickly misinformation can circulate online. Experts frequently advise users to verify viral claims by checking official social media accounts or credible sources before sharing them further. Kangana, known for expressing her views on political and social issues, has often made headlines for her outspoken opinions. However, in this case, the viral statement circulating online has no factual basis and should not be treated as a genuine comment from the actress. As the post continues to be shared across various platforms, social media users are being urged to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of viral content before accepting it as true. The claim about Kangana Ranaut seeking the Education Minister’s post and offering extra NEET marks to students who watch her films is entirely false.
