US, Iran and Oman near interim Strait of Hormuz ag…

WASHINGTON: A breakthrough agreement aimed at reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz could be announced as early as Wednesday, with the United States, Iran and Oman reportedly nearing a temporary deal designed to restore maritime traffic and reinforce the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.

According to a report by the US news website Axios, citing two regional sources and a US official, negotiations have reached their final stage after weeks of intensive diplomacy. The agreement is expected to provide a 60-day interim framework that could later be extended if both sides remain committed to its terms.

Under the proposed arrangement, ships entering the Persian Gulf would travel through the northern shipping lane under Iranian oversight, while vessels leaving for the Arabian Sea would use the southern lane within Omani waters, coordinated in consultation with Iran. During the interim period, no tolls or transit fees would be imposed on commercial shipping.

The deal also includes a commitment to clear naval mines from the central navigation channel within 30 days. Once the route is declared safe, it is expected to become the primary passage for two-way maritime traffic under a longer-term management framework jointly coordinated by Iran and Oman.

The reported agreement would address some of Iran’s longstanding demands for a greater role in managing navigation through the strategic waterway, one of the world’s most important energy corridors through which a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports passes.

Regional diplomatic efforts played a crucial role in bringing the parties closer to an understanding. Sources familiar with the talks said officials from Qatar, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia supported mediation efforts alongside Oman, while the White House remained actively involved throughout the negotiations.

The report added that US envoy Steve Witkoff, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi held several telephone discussions in recent days to finalize outstanding issues.

Regional sources said Araghchi had agreed to the proposal in principle over the weekend, pending approval from Iran’s senior leadership and the Supreme National Security Council. A US official and another regional source indicated that Tehran completed its approval process on Tuesday, clearing the way for a formal announcement.

If confirmed, the agreement could ease tensions in the Gulf, reduce risks to global energy supplies, and revive broader diplomatic efforts, including discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme and long-term regional stability.

Travis Kelce calls Taylor Swift his wife while reflecting on wedding

Travis Kelce is openly embracing married life, recently referring to Taylor Swift as his “wife” while sharing a few personal details about their wedding during a media appearance. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end spoke about his newlywed life on Wednesday, August 12, while addressing reporters at the team’s training camp. During the press conference, Kelce was asked about the significance of getting married at Madison Square Garden, one of New York City’s most iconic sporting venues. Kelce explained that performing at or attending an important event at the legendary arena had been a longtime personal dream. He recalled wanting to attend a playoff game involving the New York Knicks but said he previously missed the opportunity because he was busy with football commitments. Referring to Swift’s appearance at the Knicks’ Game 4 NBA Finals matchup on June 10, 2026, Kelce jokingly noted that his wife had managed to experience the venue before him. He said it was particularly meaningful to finally fulfill his childhood dream by getting married at the famous arena. Kelce described Madison Square Garden as the “Mecca” of sports venues and said having his wedding there made the occasion feel even more special. The NFL star also found a humorous way to discuss the weather, joking about the intense New York City heat. He praised the arena’s air conditioning, saying it was working perfectly during the celebration. While discussing his offseason, Kelce became more sentimental and described his wedding as the “best night” of his life. He expressed appreciation for everyone who attended and helped celebrate the couple’s special occasion. “It was a fun offseason,” Kelce said, adding that the wedding was the highlight before turning his attention back to football. His comments offered a rare glimpse into how meaningful the celebration was for him. Swift and Kelce began dating in 2023 and announced their engagement on August 26, 2025. They later exchanged vows at Madison Square Garden in New York City in front of nearly 1,000 guests. The star-studded guest list reportedly included Selena Gomez, Benny Blanco, Gigi Hadid, Bradley Cooper, Ed Sheeran, Hugh Grant, Jennifer Lopez, Jason Sudeikis, Jimmy Fallon, Dakota Johnson, Mariska Hargitay, Zoë Kravitz, Karlie Kloss, Miranda Lambert, Kelsea Ballerini, Benson Boone and several other high-profile names. The ceremony was officiated by their friend Adam Sandler. The couple also opted for a less traditional wedding party arrangement. Swift’s brother, Austin Swift, served as her man of honour, while Kelce’s brother, Jason Kelce, took on the role of best man. Following the ceremony, celebratory messages appeared on the jumbotrons outside Madison Square Garden, announcing the newlyweds with the words, “JUST T&T MARRIED!” Now that the wedding celebrations are behind them, Kelce appears ready to begin the next chapter of his life while returning his full attention to the football season.

Iran demands Qatar probe over missing pilots

TEHRAN: Iran has asked Qatar to allow an Iranian military fact-finding team to enter the country to investigate the fate of pilots Tehran says went missing after an incident involving Iranian aircraft, adding another layer of tension to already strained regional relations. Iranian military official Mohammad Baqerzadeh, commander of the Armed Forces General Staff’s Committee for the Search for Missing Persons, said an Iranian Air Force expert team had been waiting for months to travel to Qatar, according to Iranian media. Baqerzadeh accused Qatari authorities of repeatedly delaying the investigation and called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene in the case. Qatar, however, has rejected Iran’s claim that it is holding Iranian pilots. Doha said its search-and-rescue teams recently recovered the remains of one pilot after Iranian aircraft entered Qatari airspace in March and failed to respond to repeated attempts to establish contact. Qatari authorities said they had contacted Tehran to coordinate the transfer of the remains and invited Iranian officials to examine details of the search-and-rescue operation. Qatar said it had not received a response. The dispute comes as Tehran continues to focus heavily on the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. Iran says air defence capacity survived war Separately, an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps official claimed that more than 85 per cent of Iran’s air-defence production capacity survived the recent conflict. According to Iranian media reports, the official said attacks on military production facilities had not significantly reduced the production or delivery of missiles and air-defence systems. He also claimed that production in some areas had increased and that Iran’s operational air-defence capabilities were now stronger than at the beginning of the fighting. The claims could not be independently verified. Hormuz shipping talks continue Iran has also announced progress in negotiations with Oman over new shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran and Muscat had reached an agreement on a shipping-route map following weeks of technical discussions. The negotiations began after a memorandum of understanding was signed in June to develop safer navigation arrangements. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stressed that the technical talks with Oman should not be confused with negotiations over reopening the waterway. He said existing maritime routes were no longer functional and that Iran and Oman were working on a temporary route that could eventually become permanent. Tehran links security to US actions Iranian officials continue to insist that the full restoration of security in the strait depends on an end to what Tehran describes as US military pressure, threats and a naval blockade. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi also declared that the Strait of Hormuz would remain under Iranian control, while accusing Washington of suffering strategic setbacks. The statements underline the widening gap between Iran and the United States over the strategic waterway, despite technical discussions between Iran and Oman aimed at facilitating maritime navigation. Hezbollah commander reportedly killed Meanwhile, tensions have also continued along Iran’s regional front. Israel’s military said it killed Abu Hassan Alaa, described as a senior Hezbollah commander, in a strike in southern Lebanon. The Israeli army said the attack targeted a Hezbollah headquarters in the Ansar area. Hezbollah had not immediately commented on the claim. The developments show how multiple disputes remain intertwined across the region, from missing military personnel and air-defence claims to the sensitive question of shipping through Hormuz. For Tehran, however, control and security of the strait remain central. While Iran and Oman appear to be making technical progress on navigation arrangements, Iranian officials continue to maintain that any broader reopening of the waterway will depend on wider political and security conditions.

Policeman martyred in Swat anti-terror operation

A police constable was martyred during an ongoing operation against suspected terrorists in Swat’s Kabal tehsil, police said on Wednesday. The operation is being carried out in the Shalkho Sar area. Security forces launched the action after receiving information about the presence of terrorists in the region. According to Swat police, Elite Force Constable Gulfam embraced martyrdom while fighting the militants on Tuesday night. Police said he showed courage during the operation and sacrificed his life in the line of duty. The operation is being conducted jointly by the Counter-Terrorism Department, Swat Police and Upper Swat Police. Senior police officials are supervising the operation. The Malakand regional police officer and the district police officers of Swat and Upper Swat are overseeing the security action. Police said security personnel have surrounded the area where the terrorists are believed to be present. The suspects have reportedly been confined to the Shalkho Sar area. Officials also reported that the operation may have caused heavy casualties among the terrorists. However, further details about the number of casualties were not immediately available. The security forces continue to search the area as the operation remains underway. Officials are taking measures to prevent the suspects from escaping. Swat District Police Officer Umar Khan said the police force remains committed to maintaining peace in the region. He said law enforcement personnel would continue their efforts to protect the public. He also stressed that police would remain prepared to make sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. The latest incident comes as security concerns continue to affect parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Reports in recent months have pointed to the presence of militants in Kabal and Matta tehsils of Swat. Security forces have increased operations in areas where militant activity has been reported. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has remained one of the major regions affected by militant violence. Law enforcement agencies have continued conducting intelligence-based and targeted operations to counter terrorist threats. A security assessment released in June by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies also highlighted the worsening security situation. The assessment said Pakistan’s security environment had deteriorated significantly in May after showing improvement during the previous two months. According to the assessment, the increase was largely linked to rising militant violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

Canada announces retaliatory tariffs as trade talks with US collapse

OTTAWA: Canada has announced plans to impose new tariffs on a range of American products in response to steep duties introduced by US President Donald Trump on Canadian goods, marking another sharp deterioration in trade relations between the two North American neighbours. Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Saturday that Canada would adopt a “dollar-for-dollar” approach to Washington’s latest tariffs. The retaliatory measures are scheduled to take effect on September 8 and will cover products including US steel, electronics, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper and other goods. The announcement came after three days of intensive negotiations between Canadian and US officials ended without a trade agreement. Both sides blamed the other for the failure to reach a breakthrough, raising fresh uncertainty over the future of the United States-Mexico-Canada trade framework. Carney vows to defend Canadian economy Speaking at a press conference in Ottawa, Carney said Canada would respond to the US measures in an effort to shield workers, farmers, businesses and families from the economic impact of the new duties. “Canada will match Washington’s new tariffs dollar for dollar,” Carney said, stressing that Ottawa could not accept the conditions put forward by the US administration. Asked whether the dispute had effectively developed into a trade war, Carney responded in stark terms, saying Canada had been attacked and therefore had to defend its economic interests. The Canadian government said its countermeasures would target a broad selection of US products. Further details, including the specific goods affected and the tariff rates, are expected to be announced in the coming days. Carney also indicated that Ottawa would introduce support programmes for Canadian industries affected by the American duties. The assistance could remain in place for several years depending on the impact of the trade measures. US-Canada negotiations break down The latest dispute follows the collapse of negotiations that had been viewed as an opportunity to prevent a further escalation in tariffs. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer described the failed talks as a missed opportunity for Canada and said Washington would proceed with measures responding to Canadian retaliation. He also suggested that no fresh negotiations were immediately planned. The White House and offices representing the US commerce secretary and trade representative did not immediately issue a detailed response to Canada’s announcement. The breakdown has created additional uncertainty for businesses operating across the US-Canada border, particularly industries that depend heavily on integrated North American supply chains. New US duties affect key Canadian exports The latest US tariffs apply to a range of Canadian exports, including wine, furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, fishing equipment and hockey-related products. According to the Canadian government, the new duties affect approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian exports to the United States. Unlike some previous measures, the latest tariffs do not fully exempt products traded under the existing North American trade agreement. The new duties represent a relatively small share of Canada’s overall exports to the US, but officials and industry representatives warn that individual sectors could face significant pressure. Industries such as softwood lumber, wine, manufacturing and other export-oriented businesses could experience weaker demand, higher costs and potential employment losses if the dispute continues. Candace Laing, chief executive of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, urged companies across the country to prepare for a prolonged period of uncertainty. Dispute over vehicles and trade conditions One of the most difficult issues during the negotiations involved the treatment of larger vehicles. Canadian negotiators reportedly sought to extend preferential tariff arrangements for light-duty vehicles to medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Washington opposed the proposal, according to people familiar with the negotiations. Carney said the US position could have placed Canadian-made models at a competitive disadvantage. He specifically pointed to vehicles produced in Canada, including Ford’s F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks and General Motors’ Silverado. The Canadian prime minister also said some US proposals touched on issues involving Canadian culture, language and sovereignty, although he did not provide further details. Ontario backs Ottawa’s position Ontario Premier Doug Ford, a prominent critic of US tariffs, welcomed Carney’s decision to reject what he described as an unfavourable agreement. Ford said the proposed terms would have harmed Ontario’s automotive, steel and manufacturing industries, adding that he supported Ottawa’s decision to retaliate rather than accept a deal that he considered damaging to the province. Ontario is particularly exposed to disruptions in US-Canada trade because of its large manufacturing and automotive sectors and its close integration with American supply chains. Canada seeks new international partnerships The escalating dispute also comes as Canada seeks to reduce its economic dependence on the United States. Nearly 70% of Canadian exports are destined for the US market, making the country particularly vulnerable to changes in American trade policy. Carney has nevertheless pledged to strengthen Canada’s relationships with other countries and explore new trade and security partnerships. The prime minister was elected on a platform that included a tougher negotiating stance toward the Trump administration. His government has maintained that Canada should defend its economic interests while looking for opportunities to expand trade beyond its southern neighbour. Public opinion has also strengthened Ottawa’s position, with polling indicating that many Canadians oppose making major concessions to Washington. Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, who leads the federal opposition, also called for national unity in response to the US tariffs.
