US Measles cases hit highest level in 35 years, CD…

The United States has recorded its highest number of measles cases in 35 years, with infections already surpassing last year’s record, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC has reported at least 2,318 cases so far in 2026, exceeding the total recorded in 2025 with more than five months still remaining in the year.

Health officials say more than 90% of cases are among people who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown. Speaking to CNN, Dr Andrew Racine, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, said: “This essentially is a public health failure, and it’s avoidable.”

Several outbreaks that began in 2025 have continued into this year, while dozens of new outbreaks have also been identified. South Carolina has reported the highest number of cases, with an outbreak that began in October growing to nearly 1,000 cases before ending in April. The resurgence of measles, a highly contagious disease that was declared eliminated in the US in 2000, has been linked to declining vaccination rates in some communities. Misinformation about vaccine safety, coupled with vaccine hesitancy, has contributed to the resurgence of the disease, which can cause severe complications, particularly in young children and immunocompromised individuals.

Health officials have urged parents to ensure their children are vaccinated against measles, mumps, and rubella, emphasizing that the MMR vaccine is safe and highly effective. The CDC has recommended that children receive two doses of the MMR vaccine, with the first dose administered between 12 and 15 months of age and the second dose between 4 and 6 years of age. Vaccination rates have declined in some states, leading to pockets of vulnerability where outbreaks can take hold.

The rise in measles cases has prompted public health campaigns to increase vaccination coverage and address misinformation. Health officials have stressed the importance of community immunity, noting that high vaccination rates are essential to prevent outbreaks and protect those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons. The current outbreak has put a strain on healthcare systems, with hospitals reporting an increase in measles-related hospitalizations.

Public health experts have called for renewed efforts to combat vaccine hesitancy and improve access to vaccines. The CDC has advised healthcare providers to be vigilant for measles symptoms, particularly in patients who have recently traveled to areas where the disease is endemic or have been in contact with infected individuals. The agency has also emphasized the importance of rapid identification and isolation of cases to prevent further spread.

The measles outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vaccination in preventing infectious diseases. As the US continues to grapple with the resurgence of measles, the focus will be on ensuring that all communities have access to vaccines and accurate information about their safety and effectiveness. The coming months will be critical in determining whether public health efforts can curb the outbreak and prevent further spread of the disease. He stressed that national unity and solidarity played a crucial role in safeguarding the country’s interests. The prime minister also called for greater efforts to eliminate sectarianism and promote harmony among Muslims. He urged religious scholars and clerics to spread the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, particularly his messages of love, tolerance, compassion and brotherhood. Shehbaz Sharif said mosques, pulpits and religious gatherings should become platforms for promoting peace and mutual respect rather than division. He emphasized that following the Prophet’s ﷺ teachings could help strengthen unity within the Muslim community and counter attempts to create hatred and discord among Muslims.

Earlier, Sri Lanka could not capitalise on the decision to bat first as they were limited to 210-9 in 50 overs despite a strong opening foundation. Skipper Chamari Athapaththu and Vishmi Gunaratne stitched a 56-run stand in 11 overs, with Gunaratne contributing 28 off 34 balls, hitting four boundaries. Despite the wicket, Sri Lanka carried on as Athapaththu and Hasini Perera stitched a 53-run partnership to take the total over the 100-run mark. She noted that every character existed in a moral gray area, which helped make the show feel authentic and relatable rather than overly dramatic.  Although Peacock is developing a fresh adaptation of Friday Night Lights, Palicki admitted she is “torn” about the project. She explained that the original series holds a special place in her heart and questioned whether such an iconic story truly needs to be reimagined. According to the actress, the original was “a perfect show,” making the idea of a reboot difficult to embrace.  That said, Palicki clarified that her hesitation does not come from negativity toward the new creative team. Instead, it stems from her deep respect for the original cast, writers, and creators who built the series into one of television’s most beloved dramas.     Senegal court jails TikTok creators for insulting president

    A Senegalese court has sentenced three TikTok influencers to custodial sentences and fines for insulting President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Critics have condemned the ruling as a direct blow to free expression within the country. The creators work for Feenal Digital, an online channel known for producing content supportive of former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. The decision follows a recent political rift between President Faye and Sonko. Mandoumbe Diop, operating under the moniker Lamignou Darou, received a three-month unconditional prison term. He represents the most prominent of the group, boasting over 500,000 followers on TikTok. Magueye Diaw and Moustapha Ndiaye were each handed two-month custodial sentences alongside fines of 500,000 CFA francs. Defence counsel Abdy Nar Ndiaye argued the posts were purely satirical and did not warrant criminal sanction.

    Pakistan slams Houthi threats to Saudi Arabia

    Pakistan has strongly condemned the Houthi militia’s threats against Saudi Arabia and commercial shipping in the Red Sea, describing the actions as a serious threat to regional peace, international trade and maritime security. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Foreign Office said Pakistan unequivocally rejects the continued threats directed at the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and vessels involved in lawful commercial activities. It stressed that freedom of navigation and the uninterrupted movement of global trade must be protected at all costs. The statement came after Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement announced a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia. The group declared that ships linked to the kingdom could become targets, saying the move was a response to what it described as Saudi actions in Yemen. Pakistan said any threat to commercial shipping violates international law and undermines the rules-based maritime order. The Foreign Office warned that such actions not only endanger regional security but also put global commerce and energy supplies at risk. Islamabad expressed particular concern over reports that commercial vessels trading with Saudi Arabia could be targeted. The Foreign Office said attacks or threats against civilian shipping are unacceptable and could have serious consequences for international trade. Reaffirming its commitment to protecting national interests, Pakistan warned that any hostile act against Pakistani-flagged ships or Pakistan’s maritime assets would be treated as a grave threat to the country’s sovereignty and national security. The statement added that Pakistan reserves the right to take all necessary measures, including lawful self-defense under the United Nations Charter and international law, to protect its maritime interests if required. Pakistan also voiced concern over attempts to widen the ongoing Middle East conflict by dragging Saudi Arabia into the regional confrontation. The Foreign Office reiterated Islamabad’s unwavering support for the security, sovereignty, territorial integrity and prosperity of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The government urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid further escalation. It called for dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful solutions to resolve disputes while emphasizing the importance of protecting international shipping routes. The Foreign Office stressed that ensuring the safety of maritime trade is essential for global economic stability. It said uninterrupted navigation through international waterways is critical for maintaining the flow of energy supplies and commercial goods across the world. The Houthi announcement has raised fresh concerns among governments and shipping companies over the security of the Red Sea, one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait serves as a vital gateway connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is a key route for oil exports from the Gulf to international markets.
