US Suspends Immigrant Visa Processing for Nationals of 75 Countries, Including Thailand

BANGKOK – The U.S. Government under Donald Trump will suspend all visa processing for visitors from 75 countries, including Thailand, a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday, marking one of the Trump administration’s most drastic measures in its immigration crackdown.

Trump Imposes 19% Tariff on Thailand, Cambodia Following Peace Deal

The spokesperson did not provide further details about the plan, first reported by Fox News, which cited a State Department memorandum.

While the State Department did not release the full list of affected nations, it confirmed that Thailand, Brazil, Egypt, Somalia, Russia, and Iran are among them. The suspension applies only to immigrant visas—those for permanent residency—and does not affect tourist, business, or other non-immigrant visas.

“The Trump administration is bringing an end to the abuse of America’s immigration system by those who would extract wealth from the American people,” Pigott stated. He explained that the pause will allow the State Department to reassess procedures to block entry to individuals likely to become dependent on public benefits.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated on social media that Somalia—a country President Trump has previously criticized—is included in the ban. The administration has emphasized stricter vetting for all visa applicants, including reviews of social media activity.

Since President Trump’s return to office, the State Department has revoked over 100,000 visas, a one-year record. The Department of Homeland Security also reported last month that more than 605,000 people have been deported, with an additional 2.5 million leaving voluntarily.

The move aligns with Trump’s longstanding push to restrict immigration from non-European nations and prioritize applicants from regions such as Scandinavia. The suspension is expected to remain in place while new screening protocols are developed.

Thailand Launches National Crackdown on Foreigners Abusing Visa-Free Entries

The Trump administration had already imposed much stricter rules, in addition to a visa screening process that has long been one of the most rigorous in the world. Last year, the administration ordered officials to review applicants’ social media profiles for signs of anti-American views.

Eight killed as torrential rains devastate Sindh

Heavy monsoon rains continued to wreak havoc across Sindh, killing at least eight people and injuring another eight as widespread flooding disrupted life in several districts. The provincial government placed all rescue and emergency agencies on high alert and directed authorities to intensify relief efforts in the affected areas. The downpour caused severe urban flooding, inundated roads and residential areas, and damaged public infrastructure. Authorities warned that more rainfall could worsen the situation and urged residents to remain cautious. Hyderabad received an exceptionally high amount of rainfall, with a cumulative 360 millimetres recorded between August 1 and August 2. The continuous rain submerged roads, disrupted traffic and affected routine activities across the city. In Badin district, floodwaters created a major emergency after two breaches developed in the Mirwah Canal on Sunday morning. The breaches, measuring approximately 15 feet and eight feet wide, allowed water to flow into nearby settlements, flooding around 200 houses. Local authorities and rescue teams were deployed to assist affected families and assess the damage. The provincial government also took administrative action during the emergency. The Town Municipal Officer (TMO) of Umerkot was suspended for remaining absent from the district while the crisis unfolded. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah directed all rescue organizations to remain on high alert and ensure a rapid response to emergencies. He instructed the Local Government Department that no government officer should leave their place of posting without prior permission until the situation improves. US, Iran and Oman near interim Strait of Hormuz ag…

WASHINGTON: A breakthrough agreement aimed at reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz could be announced as early as Wednesday, with the United States, Iran and Oman reportedly nearing a temporary deal designed to restore maritime traffic and reinforce the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran. According to a report by the US news website Axios, citing two regional sources and a US official, negotiations have reached their final stage after weeks of intensive diplomacy. The agreement is expected to provide a 60-day interim framework that could later be extended if both sides remain committed to its terms. Under the proposed arrangement, ships entering the Persian Gulf would travel through the northern shipping lane under Iranian oversight, while vessels leaving for the Arabian Sea would use the southern lane within Omani waters, coordinated in consultation with Iran. During the interim period, no tolls or transit fees would be imposed on commercial shipping. The deal also includes a commitment to clear naval mines from the central navigation channel within 30 days. Once the route is declared safe, it is expected to become the primary passage for two-way maritime traffic under a longer-term management framework jointly coordinated by Iran and Oman. The reported agreement would address some of Iran’s longstanding demands for a greater role in managing navigation through the strategic waterway, one of the world’s most important energy corridors through which a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports passes. Regional diplomatic efforts played a crucial role in bringing the parties closer to an understanding. Sources familiar with the talks said officials from Qatar, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia supported mediation efforts alongside Oman, while the White House remained actively involved throughout the negotiations. The report added that US envoy Steve Witkoff, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi held several telephone discussions in recent days to finalize outstanding issues. Regional sources said Araghchi had agreed to the proposal in principle over the weekend, pending approval from Iran’s senior leadership and the Supreme National Security Council. A US official and another regional source indicated that Tehran completed its approval process on Tuesday, clearing the way for a formal announcement. If confirmed, the agreement could ease tensions in the Gulf, reduce risks to global energy supplies, and revive broader diplomatic efforts, including discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme and long-term regional stability.
