Why Airplanes turn off the AC before takeoff

Have you ever noticed that the cabin feels warmer just before a plane takes off?

Many passengers wonder why the air conditioning seems to stop working at that moment. The reason is not a technical problem it is part of the aircraft’s normal operating procedure.

When passengers board the plane the cabin is usually cooled by an external air conditioning system at the airport.

This keeps everyone comfortable while the aircraft is parked at the gate.

Just before departure the external power and cooling supply are disconnected.  At that point the aircraft switches to its Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) a small onboard engine that provides electricity and cool air until the main engines are fully running.

During takeoff pilots need as much engine power as possible to safely lift the aircraft into the air.  To help achieve this some systems that are not essential during takeoff including parts of the air conditioning and climate control system may be temporarily reduced or switched off.

This allows more engine power to be used for takeoff instead of running cabin cooling systems.

Former American pilot John Cox explains that this short changeover happens because the aircraft moves from ground power to its own power systems.

Once the engines are operating normally and the plane reaches a stable stage of flight the air conditioning returns to normal and the cabin quickly becomes comfortable again.

So, if the cabin feels a little warm before takeoff there is usually no reason to worry. It is a normal part of the flight process designed to support a safe and efficient departure.

  • Living in the Present: Lessons from Alfred

Shay Qais As one of the leading psychologists of the modern times, Alfred Adler made remarkable contributions to the field, particularly to psychology, education, parenting and counseling. Some of his teachings may have been controversial at the time but he eventually became one of the most popular personalities in these fields as Adlerian Psychology became highly influential in these areas due to the holistic approach of understanding individuals and their social interactions. The most famous concept developed by Adler was the idea of “community feeling” or social interest. The main idea is that an individual can only attain full happiness when they make society around them happy and comfortable as all humans are intrinsically linked with each other. In other words, Adlerian Philosophy states that individuals should strive to contribute to the well being of their communities while being able to successfully interact with other human beings. Interestingly enough the concept described above is very similar to the main message of The Courage to Be Disliked book which promotes an individualistic approach of being true to oneself regardless of what other people think about us.   According to Adler regardless of being disliked or not disliked, a person should not focus on the perceptions of others since those who truly matter will accept them for who they are.   However one should not aim to please everyone as it is impossible to gain the approval of everybody. Instead by contributing to the well being of society and acting morally an individual can feel full happiness since they would be living up to their ideals of being good people regardless of outside criticism. Another important teaching of Adler’s is that he strongly emphasized the need to live “in the now”. According to his philosophy, individuals should not dwell on the past as it can only define a person to a certain degree.   In other words although one cannot deny the effect which past events and personal history have on the current state of an individual a person should not be held hostage by it. Instead a person should live in the present moment and do their best to shape their future because there is nothing else which can define them besides themselves. Adler’s view on problems and struggles is that they mostly stem from poor interpersonal relationships. Therefore a great focus should be on improving relationships with others as well as learning to cooperate and support each other.   Alfred Adler was indeed a genius as his contributions to the field of psychology are very valuable and helped to shape the modern perception of the human psyche. I believe that many people today are influenced by his work and continue to follow his teachings. Therefore, there is nothing better than using the wisdom generated by him to improve the state of the world. After all, many individuals strive to achieve their goals while also trying to help others and have strong social bonds, which ultimately leads to personal fulfillment.

    The silence of the state

Al Jazeera’s digital domain was restricted in Pakistan following its critical coverage of regional unrest and local election turmoil. Pakistan had become the second country after Israel to ban the Qatari broadcaster. While the statement makes for a soundbite, it oversimplifies both history and the mechanics of state censorship. In reality, the history of sovereign states attempting to mute inconvenient journalism is long, systemic, and filled with precedent. The Reality Behind the Headlines The recent digital restrictions in Pakistan emerged after the network broadcast extensive ground coverage of civil protests, Internet shutdowns, and election-related violence in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. State authorities responded by accusing the international news organization of yellow journalism and selective reporting. Shortly after, users across the country reported that the network’s website had become inaccessible. Repeated bans on Al Jazeera However, this action makes Pakistan the first nation to follow Israel’s 2024 ban overlooks press suppression. Over the past two decades, Al Jazeera has faced repeated office closures, revocations and total broadcast bans across numerous jurisdictions. Egypt (2013): Following political upheaval, the government shut down the network’s local operations and detained several of its journalists under allegations of threat to national stability. The Gulf Blockade (2017): During a severe diplomatic rift, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Jordan blocked the channel’s signals and shuttered its regional bureaus. Israel (2024): Emergency legislation empowered authorities to halt local broadcasts, raid offices, and seize transmission equipment over national security claims. Far from being a rare sequel, the administrative impulse to silence an uncomfortable mirror is an old story retold. The Architecture of Banishment In literary traditions, the suppression of speech is rarely about the words themselves; it is about who holds the authority to define reality. George Orwell  observed in 1984 that the primary goal of totalitarian control is to limit the perimeter of thought by controlling the historical record. When a state apparatus brands unfavorable reporting as inherently fraudulent or subversive, it engages in an act of narrative containment. The label of yellow journalism becomes a rhetorical wall. This label shield the public from realities that disrupt official consensus. This dynamic reflects the bureaucratic absurdity depicted in Franz Kafka’s The Castle, where an elusive authority governs from above while remaining immune to direct questioning. In Kafka’s vision, the citizen is caught in a maze of unwritten rules and opaque decrees, where seeking transparency is treated as an act of insubordination. When digital portals are quietly restricted without formal public legislation or explicit judicial oversight, the state operates within a similarly Kafkaesque realm. The silence itself becomes an instrument of governance. The Illusion of Total Control There is a profound irony in modern media suppression. In classical literature, exile was absolute. A banished figure like Ovid was removed physically from the city center, their voice fading at the empire’s edges. Today, however, censorship in a hyper-connected world is an exercise in futility. Blocking a website or pulling a broadcast signal rarely extinguishes the narrative. Instead, it often draws greater international scrutiny to the very events the state wished to obscure. A phenomenon akin to the Streisand effect.   When governments resort to digital blockades, they reveal a fundamental fragility. True political stability rests on the capacity to withstand criticism.  To edit reality is like trying to stop the tide by breaking the hourglass. The water continues to rise, and the story, inevitably, finds another way to be told.

  • 6 Foods for better sleep

If you often stay awake late at night without any reason it is important to know that not getting enough sleep can increase the risk of serious health problems. Poor sleep has been linked to heart disease stroke and other long term illnesses. If you struggle to fall asleep even when you are tired a few simple changes to your diet may help. Some foods contain natural nutrients that support better sleep and may help you fall asleep more easily. •Bananas Bananas are rich in tryptophan an amino acid that helps the body produce melatonin the hormone that controls sleep. They also contain magnesium which helps relax muscles and supports restful sleep. • Warm milk A glass of warm milk before bed is a popular bedtime drink. Milk contains tryptophan which may help the brain produce more melatonin and improve sleep quality. • Honey A spoonful of honey before bedtime may help you sleep better. Honey contains small amounts of tryptophan and its natural sugars may help the body use this amino acid more effectively. • Jalebi Some people believe that eating jalebi before bed can make you sleepy because it raises blood sugar and insulin levels. However there is limited scientific evidence to support this and eating sugary foods at night is generally not recommended as a regular sleep aid. • Cherries Cherries especially tart cherries are a natural source of melatonin. Research suggests that drinking cherry juice may improve sleep quality and help some people sleep longer. • Almonds Almonds are rich in magnesium a mineral that supports healthy sleep and muscle relaxation. Studies suggest that low magnesium levels may contribute to sleep problems. While these foods may support better sleep they are not a cure for chronic insomnia. If you have ongoing sleep problems it is best to speak with a healthcare professional to find the underlying cause.

  • Danger signs your air conditioner needs repair

As temperatures rise many people buy old or low cost air conditioners to save money. However experts warn that aging AC units can become dangerous if problems are ignored.  Small faults may turn into serious issues including electrical short circuits fires or costly damage. According to experts older air conditioners often develop worn out wiring damaged electrical parts faulty motors and overheating. These problems may seem minor at first but can become dangerous if they are not repaired in time. One of the biggest warning signs is a burning smell or the odor of melted plastic when the AC is switched on.  Experts say this could mean the internal wiring motor or insulation has been damaged increasing the risk of fire. If this happens turn off the unit immediately and have it checked by a qualified technician. Unusual sounds such as rattling grinding or loud noises are also signs that something is wrong. These noises may be caused by a loose part a damaged fan or a compressor problem.  Ignoring them could lead to a complete system failure. If the air conditioner becomes unusually hot while running it may indicate an electrical fault inside the unit.  Overheating can increase the risk of a short circuit or fire making immediate inspection and repair important. Experts also advise not to ignore weak cooling. Reduced cooling may be caused by low refrigerant a faulty compressor or a clogged air filter.  These issues usually mean the AC needs servicing or repairs. Another serious warning sign is seeing sparks near the voltage stabilizer or electrical wires. This may indicate loose connections or damaged wiring, which can quickly become a fire hazard if not fixed. Experts recommend turning off the air conditioner immediately if you notice any of these warning signs and contacting a qualified technician for a full inspection.  Timely repairs can help prevent bigger damage and keep your home and family safe. They also advise that if an air conditioner keeps breaking down and needs frequent repairs replacing it with a newer safer and more energy efficient model may be a smarter and more cost effective choice.
