Youth protests challenge Modi’s image ahead of key state elections

A growing youth protest movement in India has delivered one of the biggest political setbacks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in recent years, raising questions about the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s appeal among younger voters ahead of crucial state elections. What began as demonstrations over alleged examination paper leaks has developed into a wider expression of frustration over unemployment, education and economic uncertainty.

The protests were led by the Cockroach Janta Party, or CJP, a youth movement that quickly gained massive attention on social media. Within days of launching its campaign in May, the group attracted around 22 million followers on Instagram, most of them from Generation Z. The movement demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan after allegations that a medical entrance examination had been compromised.

As protests spread across India, thousands of students gathered in central Delhi despite heavy police action. In an effort to calm public anger, Prime Minister Modi posted a rare selfie video on Instagram, saying he understood the concerns of young people and promising action to address their grievances. However, the message failed to ease the demonstrations. Days later, Education Minister Pradhan resigned, fulfilling the protesters’ main demand and handing the movement a significant political victory.

The resignation is considered unusual because Modi’s government has generally resisted removing senior ministers in response to public pressure. Political observers say the outcome has encouraged many young Indians who believe their voices can influence government decisions.

Analysts say the protests extend far beyond the issue of examination leaks. Many young people are increasingly worried about unemployment, rising competition for limited jobs and the possible impact of artificial intelligence on employment opportunities, particularly in India’s large information technology and business services sectors. While the exam controversy sparked the demonstrations, experts believe it exposed much deeper concerns among the country’s youth.

Political analyst Amitabh Tiwari said the paper leak became a symbol of wider frustration felt by many young Indians who are anxious about their future. He noted that disappointment over employment prospects and economic opportunities has created growing dissatisfaction that cannot be ignored.

Senior government officials have acknowledged these concerns. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the government remains committed to understanding students’ problems and ensuring that their concerns are addressed. However, critics argue the ruling party has struggled to connect with younger generations, particularly on social media platforms where political discussions are rapidly evolving.

Demographic trends also highlight the challenge facing India’s political establishment. People between the ages of 18 and 40 make up roughly 40 percent of the country’s population but hold only a small share of seats in the lower house of Parliament. The average age of members of the federal cabinet remains above 60, leading some analysts to argue that younger voices are underrepresented in national decision making.

Although the CJP is not officially a political party, opposition groups have openly supported the student protests and attempted to capitalize on growing public dissatisfaction. The first major political test could come during next year’s state elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Gujarat. The BJP currently governs both Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, making those contests particularly important.

Some analysts believe the movement could have an even greater impact if it eventually enters electoral politics before the 2029 national election. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has said no decision has been made about transforming the movement into a political party, but its rapid popularity has already attracted widespread attention across the political spectrum.

Observers also believe political campaigning in India is changing. For years, the BJP built a strong digital presence on platforms such as X and Facebook. However, younger audiences have increasingly shifted to Instagram, where authenticity and informal communication often attract greater engagement than carefully managed political messaging. While the BJP has around 10 million Instagram followers, the CJP gained more than twice that number in only a few days. Modi personally continues to command a much larger audience across multiple social media platforms, but analysts say younger users are responding differently to newer forms of political communication.

Writers and political commentators argue that Generation Z is less influenced by traditional political authority and more willing to openly question established leaders. They believe successful politicians will increasingly need to engage directly with young voters rather than relying on conventional campaign strategies.

For Modi, the protests represent a reminder that public expectations are changing. During much of his time in office, he built a reputation as a decisive leader who rarely reversed government decisions. Political analysts now say that demonstrating a willingness to listen and respond to public concerns may become increasingly important as India moves toward another cycle of state and national elections.

SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket crashes into the moon after…

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket’s upper stage has crashed into the Moon after becoming uncontrollable following the completion of its mission, drawing renewed attention to the growing challenge of space debris and the long-term sustainability of space exploration. According to reports, the approximately 4,000-kilogram upper stage was originally used to launch a lunar lander into space. After successfully completing its primary mission, the rocket stage remained in space but could no longer be actively controlled. Over time, its trajectory led to an inevitable collision with the Moon. The impact occurred with an estimated force comparable to nearly three tons of TNT, creating another artificial impact site on the lunar surface. While the collision was significant, experts stressed that it does not pose any immediate danger to Earth or its inhabitants. NASA has confirmed that the incident presents no direct threat to Earth. However, scientists say the event serves as a reminder of the increasing amount of human-made debris orbiting Earth and traveling through deep space. As the number of space missions continues to grow, properly managing retired rocket stages and other spacecraft components is becoming an increasingly important issue for the global space community. Space debris has become a major concern for space agencies and private companies alike, as abandoned rocket stages, inactive satellites, and fragments from previous missions can create risks for future spacecraft. Experts believe that stronger international cooperation and improved end-of-mission disposal strategies will be essential to reduce the accumulation of debris in Earth’s orbit and beyond. Researchers also noted that impacts on the Moon are not uncommon. Natural meteoroids frequently strike the lunar surface, leaving countless craters over billions of years. In addition, several spacecraft have intentionally or accidentally impacted the Moon during previous missions, making such events scientifically valuable in some cases. Although the Falcon 9 upper stage’s collision is unusual because it involved an uncontrolled commercial rocket component, experts emphasized that it should not be viewed as an immediate cause for alarm. Instead, they say it highlights the need for responsible space operations as exploration of the Moon and deep space accelerates. The incident underscores the growing importance of sustainable space practices, ensuring that future missions can continue safely while minimizing the long-term impact of space debris on both Earth and the wider space environment.

Chris Martin’s unreleased James Bond demo heads to auction

An unreleased demo recorded by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin during his early attempts to write a James Bond theme song is set to go under the hammer, offering fans a rare glimpse into one of the band’s long-running ambitions. The recording, believed to be around 27 years old, has never been officially released or publicly heard. According to auction details published by Wax Poetics, the cassette features Martin performing an acoustic version of The World Is Not Enough, a song reportedly written with the hope of becoming the theme for the 1999 James Bond film of the same name starring Pierce Brosnan. However, the demo was never submitted to the filmmakers and remained in private archives for more than two decades. The recording is being described as an unreleased, unheard cassette, making it a significant collector’s item for both Coldplay fans and James Bond memorabilia enthusiasts. As of publication, bidding for the rare demo had reached $1,000, with expectations that interest could increase before the auction closes. Martin has previously spoken about Coldplay’s repeated attempts to secure a Bond theme song. During an interview with NME in 2021, the singer revealed that the band had spent years trying to write music suitable for the iconic film franchise. “We kept trying to write one for 20 years, but never submitted them,” Martin said. Reflecting on those efforts, he added with characteristic humour, “We have Bond themes for about five movies, but they’re not very good, to be honest.” Martin also joked that Coldplay’s musical style may never have been the right fit for the world-famous spy. Speaking about James Bond’s personality, he said, “I don’t know if we’re spiritually on the same trip as James… He’d be like, ‘That’s not what I’m into at all, fellas. I like guns and sh*t.’” The Bond demo forms part of a much larger collection of early Coldplay recordings assembled by British producer Chris Allison, who worked with the band during their formative years on the The Blue Room EP before they achieved global fame. The archive includes several rare recordings, such as original DAT mixes, alternate versions of early tracks and a previously unheard version of We Never Change, providing a fascinating look at Coldplay’s musical development before the release of their debut album. Collectors believe the auction could attract strong interest because it combines two globally recognised names—Coldplay and the James Bond franchise. Unreleased recordings connected to either have historically generated considerable attention among music enthusiasts. Although Coldplay never recorded an official Bond theme, Martin’s comments over the years have shown that contributing to the franchise remained a long-standing dream for the band. The newly surfaced cassette offers fans a chance to hear one of those early attempts and provides a unique piece of Coldplay history that has remained hidden for nearly three decades.

Whoopi Goldberg defends Elliot Page’s casting in The Odyssey

Whoopi Goldberg has stepped forward to defend the casting of Elliot Page in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, delivering a pointed and characteristically direct response to the wave of criticism that has been directed at the actor since the film’s release. Speaking on Tuesday’s episode of The View, Goldberg addressed the backlash head-on after a clip was played of conservative commentator Ben Shapiro describing Page’s role as an “absolute puzzler” and taking aim at the actor’s appearance and voice. Goldberg’s response was blunt and unapologetic. “A lot of conservatives who see this are going to feel the same way. That’s okay,” she said. “But I don’t understand. Why go see the movie? If you don’t want to see it, don’t go see it. Why do you care who’s cast in it?” She continued: “I don’t understand this idea that if we hate it, everybody must hate it because we hate it for this reason. You don’t like Elliot Page? Don’t go see the damn movie. Don’t do it. We will be okay if you don’t go see it.” Page, who is trans, plays Sinon in the film, a cousin of Matt Damon’s Odysseus. The casting drew significant online criticism, some of it amplified after Elon Musk weighed in on social media, initially claiming incorrectly that Page would be playing the warrior Achilles. Despite the inaccuracy being pointed out, the backlash continued and widened. Page is not the only cast member to have faced criticism over their casting. Lupita Nyong’o, who plays both Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra in the film, has also been subjected to racially charged criticism over her dual role, highlighting a pattern of commentary around the film’s diverse ensemble that goes well beyond questions of artistic interpretation. Fellow View panelist Alyssa Farah Griffin also pushed back on the criticism during the segment, arguing that the film’s themes of family, faith and the consequences of war are broad and universal enough to resonate across different audiences, including those who had voiced objections before seeing the film. What the controversy has not managed to do is dent the film’s commercial performance. The Odyssey opened in theatres on July 17 and crossed $300 million worldwide within days, making it one of the biggest releases of Christopher Nolan’s career and one of the year’s most significant box office events so far. For Goldberg, the message was simple: the film exists, it is performing, and those who object to its casting choices have every right to stay away. What they do not have, in her view, is the right to demand that everyone else feels the same.
