Zoya Akhtar explains Katrina’s ZNMD kiss with Hrithik

Filmmaker Zoya Akhtar has revealed why Katrina Kaif agreed to an unexpected kissing scene with Hrithik Roshan in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

Speaking at the Monsoon Film Festival on Monday, Akhtar recalled her experience of working with Katrina on the 2011 film. She said Katrina had never performed a kissing scene before.

According to Akhtar, Katrina understood that the scene was important to the story. After reading the script, she agreed to film the moment because she recognised its importance to her character.

The director explained that Katrina’s character, Laila, was portrayed as someone who lived in the moment and acted on her instincts.

Akhtar said the kiss was important because audiences needed to see Laila make a completely spontaneous decision. The moment was designed to reveal another side of her personality.

She compared the scene to a fairy-tale moment. In her interpretation, Hrithik Roshan’s character Arjun was like Sleeping Beauty, while Laila played the role of the prince who wakes him up.

Akhtar said the scene was not included simply as a romantic moment. It was intended to strengthen Laila’s character and underline the emotional transformation taking place between the characters.

The scene later became one of the most discussed moments from the popular film.

During the conversation, Akhtar also addressed reports about a possible sequel to Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. She confirmed that work on a follow-up is underway but said several details are still uncertain.

The filmmaker indicated that the team is considering whether the story can successfully revisit the characters at their current stage of life.

Released in 2011, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara starred Katrina Kaif, Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol and Kalki Koechlin.

The film followed three friends who reunited for a road trip in Spain. It became widely popular for its themes of friendship, adventure, relationships and living life to the fullest.

The movie was also a commercial success. It reportedly earned around ₹153 crore worldwide against a production budget estimated at between ₹45 crore and ₹55 crore.

Under the policy, women will have a 35 per cent share in the labour force, while 10 per cent of the allocation will be reserved for startups. The initiative aims not only to help young people find jobs but also encourage them to establish businesses and create employment for others. Shehbaz stressed that equal access to quality education was essential for building the welfare state envisioned by Quaid-e-Azam. He said talented children from villages and less-developed areas should receive opportunities comparable to those available to students from privileged backgrounds. The government plans to expand the Danish Schools network to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan. The initiative is intended to provide quality education to deserving students without financial barriers. A Danish University is also being established in Islamabad, with classes expected to begin next year. The institution will focus on modern education and emerging disciplines. The prime minister said Pakistan must increase its focus on information technology, artificial intelligence and technical education to remain competitive globally. He said 1,000 students had already been sent to China for training in agricultural technology, while high-achieving students would receive opportunities for IT and AI education. The government has also distributed around 700,000 laptops among deserving students. Another 250,000 laptops are expected to be provided to high-achieving students this year. Vision Pakistan 2047 will be aligned with the government’s Uraan Pakistan programme. Ministries and relevant institutions have been directed to set long-term targets covering economic transformation, human capital, technology, innovation, governance and sustainable development. The broader objective is to create a competitive and inclusive economy and move Pakistan towards a trillion-dollar economic target while improving living standards and expanding opportunities for its young population. Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan also addressed the gathering. He said the government was working continuously to create opportunities for young people and praised Shehbaz Sharif for initiatives taken for youth development.

The visiting officials are also scheduled to inspect sports facilities in Islamabad as part of their assessment of preparations. Lahore, however, is not included in the venue inspection itinerary. Pakistan intends to hold the Games primarily in Islamabad and Lahore. Lahore will serve as the Games Secretariat and is expected to host most of the competitions, while Faisalabad will also be involved as a host city, with handball scheduled to be played there. The upcoming edition will be Pakistan’s third time hosting the South Asian Games. The country previously staged the regional competition in Islamabad in 1989 and again in 2004. The biennial Games bring together athletes from across South Asia in a wide range of sporting disciplines. Sunday’s meeting is expected to give regional officials an opportunity to assess preparations, examine venues and address remaining issues before the competition begins.
