“I was a teenager HS student working at the corner service station. We had a local Dr that had one of these, his was the beautiful dark blue with matching padded top. He would pull in for gas, 27 gallon tank. After putting the car in “Park” he would tilt the wheel which would almost go horizontal on these and throw a small towel that covered the wheel from rim edge to edge. Gas up. “Lauterbach hulls are indeed special as is the family. Thanks for the heads up about the book and reunion. If there was a way to get to the event it sure would be fun.
Back in the 1970’s on Seattles Green Lake were some special times. We would sit on the beach with a battery operated B&W 2 inch TV screen watching Indy and at the same time enjoy the boat races. Some hard core racing with Larry Lauterbach and then Tom D’Eath piloting Lauterbach hulls against John Leach’s Buccaneer.…”

“I knew this was a California car as soon as I saw the chrome wheels. In the 90s, my uncle, who was a doctor in Newport Beach, bought this exact same spec. As a kid who was used to being toted around in spartan Volvos, I thought it was the fanciest car I had ever sat in.
FWIW early 1UZ-FEs are non-interference engines so timing belt failure (which is rare) is not necessarily catastrophic.”

Now this is pretty.
Is it fair to say that these are just below the playing field of a PORSCHE 356?
These early low light GHIAS exude so much class and elegance.
The lines, the colors, the styling. Everything about these is pure class.
I am an early Beetle guy who always wanted a PORSCHE 356 to fulfill my Late Fathers dream but way they are out of my league. This might be the next best thing.

“My first awesome car! Bought slightly used in 1993, it was the dark grey color, almost black, and I put a 1″ drop on it with 16″ Momo 5 spoke wheels. Had a killer sound system in it and absolutely loved that car. Had it stolen in Seattle and recovered a few weeks later pretty much stripped out. Just didn’t feel the same anymore so sold it for what I could and moved on to a Toyota truck. Have owned damn near every Honda since then — Odyssey, Ridgeline, Accord and 2 generations of Civic…”
