A few of the comments that stood out to us yesterday:

“I had a new Pinto and within a year I found a deal on a proto turbocharger set-up from a well-known Detroit area tuner. It was comparatively crude to this one without an intercooler and lots of lag. But once it spooled up, it was pretty impressive. I recall keeping pace with a 340 Duster in 2nd and 3rd gear which had the other driver wondering “WTF?!” But the tubing to the intake was a long way from the relocated carburetor and in cold weather it was really hard to start because that long…”

“When I was about 12 years old, my Mom’s cousin had one of these. He would load me, my brother, and two other younger cousins in the back with the jumper seats in the closed position. As he fishtailed down the road, the four of us would slide around on that metal flooring – back and forth, back and forth smashing into each other and the sides. Laughing all the way!!!!!!!! Probably not the safest thing to do, but we survived. – GLWA”

“My first car was a 74 2002, non-tii. I learned how to heel-and-toe in that car and used to make fun of my friend Bob who had a GTO he thought was real tough. Oh sure, in a straight line he’d blow me away but he had to start braking for turns about ½ mile out, and I’d just cruise by him, by the time we left the turn he was in my mirror, then in about 15 seconds I’d choke on his exhaust as he smoked (literally) past me. My other friend Rich said if he ever robbed a bank he would hire me as his…”

The first car I ever bought myself at 17 was a 1992 Black SHO, and my friend had a white 89. I’ve owned 5 of the Gen 2 cars since 2003 and I’ve been waiting to add the right SHO to my collection. I have my favorite car from each decade and the car from the 80s was the last missing piece. I am excited to year the secondaries open on the Yamaha 3.0 and to show my 3 young kids what peak…”

“Lets talk about tires. It was noted that I spend tons of money restoring these Elans and then use cheap tires. There is a very limited selection of 13″ tires available. You can’t just go to Tire Rack and get Michelin Pilot Sports. They just don’t make them in 13”.
The original tire on an early Elan was a bias ply 145 series. Very narrow. Although you can get some 145 or 165X80 series tires, I prefer the slightly wider but not any taller 165X65X13 tires. They fit the wheel well and still have…”

Never knew it was anything other than as-expected and normal when I’d wait for my Car and Driver, Road & Track and Auto Week magazines to arrive in the mail to immediately read from front to back beginning as a 6 or 7 year old in the 70’s.
No wonder I became a car nut. It can be attributed to the brilliant authors of the articles written by these guys.
    Great stuff.”

“Over the past fifty years, we’ve owned too many Saabs to count and a few Porsches along the way. An older perfectly maintained low miles Porsche comes through BaT every week. However, those who own Saabs enjoy the wheels off them. A Porsche is often a third or fourth car in a stable. A Saab is the daily driver and gets the miles. That as many have survived is testament to those who love Saabs really love them and will put in more time and money out of love, knowing it’s not a rational…”

I’ll occasionally go lengthy periods without driving one (months at a time), and begin to question whether something else is worthy of that mantle in my own mind. Then I’ll hop into one and go for a drive, immediately erasing any doubt that it remains top dog.”

“WOW!! This is my old car that I owned for 26 years and restored during that time. If the buyer wants to know any of the history, I can provide info for the period that I owned it. @IanC – When I sold it, I did include the Jaguar Heritage Certificate with it. Since I got it so long ago, it looks much different than the ones you get today. Hopefully, it’s still with the car. The colors are original – Opalescent Silver Blue with dark blue interior and top. I’ll be watching this one!”

I didn’t see anything mentioned about a “Birth Certificate” and, while it may be impossible to receive one before the end of the auction, this car deserves one. Per the technical data on TheSamba.com Chassis No. 5241720 would have rolled…”

Ah, yes, the Classified section of Road & Track! I whiled away much time in my youth perusing Dad’s years of R&T back issues, dreaming of one day being grown up and being able to buy one of the cars. Today, the story is the same, just perusing Bring a Trailer instead.

Ran smallish rear tires to limit traction. would take a friend out for a drive w/o the back cover in – most not accustomed to red hot headers and the noise a solid lifter V-8 makes. LOL. 50+ years later now drive a R8 – sort of similar but with massaging leather seats!! GLWTA!!”

I bought a Flint built 69 GS 350 project on e-bay sometime in the mid 2000’s. Didn’t take long to be overwhelmed and realize I’d made a terrible mistake. Things like presetting the torsion bars higher to compensate for the push bars on the front and the 413 wasn’t available on a civilian 880. These old Mopar squad cars are underrated and the best driving cars they made.”
