14 security personnel martyred, 27 injured in suic…

TANK: At least 14 security personnel were martyred and 27 others injured in a major suicide attack on the Manjhi Khel Joint Check Post in Tank district after terrorists rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the facility late Thursday night, triggering a massive blast.

According to security and police sources, the powerful explosion caused extensive destruction to the check post, completely demolishing seven to eight rooms and damaging nearby houses. Shortly after the blast, an intense exchange of gunfire erupted between the attackers and security forces and continued for a considerable period.

Sources said all attackers were killed during the ensuing security operation. A clearance and search operation remains underway as authorities continue removing debris and recovering bodies.

The martyred personnel reportedly include two police officials, seven members of the security forces, and one Forest Guard. Among the police personnel who embraced martyrdom were Constable Bilal and driver Tala Muhammad.

The injured include four police officials Constable Ismatullah Akbari, Constable Jasim, Constable Muhammad Dawood, and Constable Pir Ghulam along with other security personnel. All the wounded were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, Tank, for medical treatment.

According to sources, two of the attackers were wearing uniforms resembling those of the Pakistan Army in an apparent attempt to deceive security personnel.

Preliminary information suggests the suicide attack was carried out using a Datsun/Mazda vehicle loaded with approximately 1,500 kilograms of explosives. Sources also claimed that a white Toyota Corolla GLi was used by the attackers, apparently to facilitate their movement after the explosion.

Following the attack, security forces cordoned off the area and launched a large scale search and clearance operation. Officials are collecting evidence to determine the full circumstances of the attack. However, an official statement confirming the casualty figures and operational details is still awaited.

Meanwhile, the funeral prayers for the martyred personnel are expected to be attended by Inspector General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Zulfiqar Hameed and Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Syed Shahab Ali Shah.

In response to the security situation, the district administration has imposed a district-wide curfew in Tank from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with all entry and exit routes to the city closed until further notice. Authorities have urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and avoid unnecessary travel during the curfew.

US report urges stronger parliament oversight of P…

WASHINGTON: Pakistan needs to strengthen parliamentary oversight of its public finances by improving the timely disclosure of budget proposals, government debt and other fiscal information, according to a new US State Department assessment. The findings were published in the department’s 2026 Fiscal Transparency Report, an annual review examining how governments make financial information available to citizens and whether public institutions have adequate oversight mechanisms. The report acknowledged several positive aspects of Pakistan’s fiscal system but highlighted important gaps that could make it harder for Parliament and the public to fully assess government spending plans and financial risks. One of the key concerns was the delayed publication of the executive budget proposal. The report said Pakistan did not release the proposal within a reasonable period, limiting the opportunity for lawmakers and citizens to examine spending and revenue priorities before the budget was formally approved. The State Department recommended that the government publish its proposed budget in a timely manner to allow greater public scrutiny and parliamentary debate. The report also raised concerns over the limited disclosure of government debt obligations, particularly liabilities linked to major state-owned enterprises. More comprehensive information, it said, would provide a clearer picture of Pakistan’s overall financial position and help identify potential fiscal risks. Despite these shortcomings, the assessment offered credit for several areas of Pakistan’s financial transparency. It said enacted budgets and year-end reports were widely and easily accessible, including online. Publicly available budget documents were also found to provide a substantially complete picture of most planned government expenditures and revenues, including income from natural resources. Pakistan’s auditing arrangements received a broadly favourable assessment. The report said budget information was generally reliable and subject to scrutiny by the country’s supreme audit institution. It further noted that the institution met international standards of independence and made its findings public within a reasonable period. The assessment also examined natural resource contracts and public procurement. It found that Pakistan had established legal procedures for awarding natural resource extraction licences and appeared to follow them in practice. Information on public procurement contracts was also considered accessible. However, the report identified a particularly sensitive area requiring greater oversight: military and intelligence spending. According to the assessment, the budgets of military and intelligence agencies were not subject to adequate parliamentary or civilian public oversight. The State Department included stronger scrutiny of these expenditures among its principal recommendations. Overall, the report presented a mixed picture rather than describing Pakistan’s fiscal system as broadly opaque. It recognised progress in publishing budgets, audit findings and procurement information while urging authorities to close key transparency gaps. The recommendations underline the importance of timely financial disclosure and stronger parliamentary scrutiny in improving accountability, public confidence and the management of Pakistan’s fiscal risks.

Shakira and Burna Boy’s global hit Dae Dae is enjoying unprecedented success after the pair delivered a show-stopping performance during the first-ever halftime show at the FIFA World Cup 2026 final. The landmark performance, held during the tournament’s championship match on July 19, attracted millions of viewers from around the world and immediately translated into a major increase in streaming numbers across leading music platforms. The historic halftime show marked a new chapter for the FIFA World Cup, introducing an entertainment format that has long been associated with other major sporting events. According to the latest streaming figures, Dae Dae recorded the highest single-day streaming total of its career following the performance. On July 20, the song received approximately 2.2 million official on-demand streams in the United States, setting a new personal record for the collaboration. The impressive total represented a 65 percent increase compared to the day before the World Cup final. It also reflected an 84 percent rise over the day following the tournament’s opening ceremony, highlighting the enormous impact of the halftime performance on the song’s popularity. Music industry experts have long observed that performances during globally watched sporting events often lead to significant increases in streaming, digital downloads, and chart rankings. With hundreds of millions of football fans tuning in to watch the World Cup final, the halftime show provided an ideal platform for artists to introduce their music to new audiences while reconnecting with existing fans. The success of Dae Dae extended beyond streaming platforms. The track also climbed into the Top 20 of Spotify and Apple Music’s real-time charts, further demonstrating its growing international appeal. The song quickly became one of the most talked-about musical moments of the tournament, with fans continuing to stream it in the days following the final. The World Cup halftime show also benefited several other artists. Justin Bieber’s Everything Hallelujah experienced a remarkable boost, with official U.S. streams increasing by 161 percent to around 268,000. Meanwhile, global K-pop sensation BTS saw renewed interest in its hit song Dynamite, which recorded a 74 percent increase in streaming, reaching approximately 312,000 official plays in the United States. Despite those strong gains, Dae Dae emerged as the tournament’s biggest musical success story. Its continued rise across multiple streaming services reflected the widespread attention generated by Shakira and Burna Boy’s energetic live performance, which received praise from fans on social media. The song’s commercial momentum also translated into chart success. Dae Dae climbed to a new career-high position on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 42. Although it narrowly missed breaking into the Top 40, the latest ranking marked another major achievement for the track and highlighted its growing popularity in the competitive U.S. music market. Meanwhile, the World Cup also helped revive interest in older songs linked to the tournament. British rock band Oasis saw its iconic anthem Wonderwall enjoy renewed popularity after becoming closely associated with England’s World Cup journey, proving once again that football’s biggest stage can influence music trends as much as sporting history.

Petroleum Levy collection hits record Rs1.57 trill…

Pakistan’s petroleum levy collection reached a record Rs1.567 trillion during the fiscal year 2025-26, exceeding both the government’s target and the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) projection, according to sources. The government also collected an additional Rs50.16 billion as Climate Support Levy during the fiscal year, adding further revenue from petroleum products. Sources said petroleum levy collections increased by Rs347.24 billion compared with the previous fiscal year. The total collection stood nearly Rs100 billion above the government’s target of Rs1.468 trillion for FY2025-26. The collection also surpassed the IMF’s estimate. The global lender had projected petroleum levy revenues of around Rs1.546 trillion for the fiscal year, meaning the actual collection exceeded the projection by approximately Rs21 billion. Petroleum levy revenues have continued to rise sharply in recent years. The government collected Rs1.220 trillion in FY2024-25, compared with Rs1.019 trillion in FY2023-24. In FY2022-23, petroleum levy collection stood at around Rs580 billion. The latest figures reflect the government’s growing reliance on petroleum-related revenues to strengthen its fiscal position and meet revenue requirements under its economic programme. At present, the government charges a petroleum levy of Rs80 per litre on petrol, while high-speed diesel carries a levy of Rs77.28 per litre. In addition, the government imposes a separate Climate Support Levy of Rs5 per litre each on petrol and diesel. The record collection comes as the government continues to seek higher revenues while managing fiscal pressures and meeting commitments under its agreement with the IMF. The increased levy revenue provides additional funds for the federal budget but also adds to the overall cost burden on consumers through petroleum prices.
