88,700 pay first Hajj installment

ISLAMABAD: As many as 88,700 intending pilgrims have deposited the first installment under Pakistan’s government-sponsored Hajj scheme, according to the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

A ministry spokesperson said only around 18,500 seats remain available under the long Hajj package. The ministry has urged applicants planning to perform Hajj in 2027 to complete their registration details and payments through the official Hajj portal as soon as possible.

Punjab recorded the highest number of payments, with 46,400 pilgrims depositing the first installment. Sindh followed with 23,500, while 11,300 intending pilgrims from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa completed their payments.

The figures also include 3,933 pilgrims from Islamabad, 2,555 from Balochistan, 677 from Gilgit-Baltistan and 362 from Azad Kashmir.

The ministry said the Hajj portal operated by the National Information Technology Board also set a new record for online payments. More than Rs55 billion in Hajj dues were collected within just three days through the online payment system.

Balochistan recorded the highest proportion of online payments, with 72% of intending pilgrims using the digital payment facility.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs advised people intending to perform Hajj in 2027 to avoid delays and complete both their personal information and payment process through the Hajj portal within the stipulated time.

Southern and central districts of Punjab are expected to see rain mainly on August 20 and 21. These areas include Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan. Authorities have warned that intense rainfall could trigger urban flooding in low-lying parts of Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore between August 17 and 20. There is also a risk of landslides in vulnerable mountainous areas, particularly Murree and Galyat. Tourists and travellers have been advised to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of severe weather. Farmers have been asked to adjust agricultural activities according to the forecast and protect livestock from adverse weather conditions. The PDMA has instructed district administrations to strengthen emergency arrangements and prepare risk-mitigation plans. Officials have been directed to maintain round-the-clock staffing and coordinate closely with relevant departments for a quick response. Authorities have also been told to provide timely information about safety precautions and possible evacuation plans through electronic and social media platforms. Drainage systems are to be inspected, desilted and cleared before heavy rainfall. Heavy machinery is also being positioned at vulnerable locations where blocked drainage or flooding could create emergencies. Motorway Police have been directed to issue regular traffic and road-condition updates and guide motorists during the rainy spell.

    Pakistanis get relief as US visa policy overturned

    A US federal judge has struck down a State Department policy that suspended immigrant visa processing for applicants from Pakistan and 74 other countries. US District Judge Jeannette Vargas issued the ruling in Manhattan, finding that the policy exceeded the legal authority of Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The State Department had introduced the suspension in January, preventing consular officials from issuing immigrant visas to applicants based solely on their nationality. The policy affected applicants from a wide range of countries, including Pakistan and Bangladesh in South Asia. Several countries in Latin America, the Balkans, Africa, the Middle East and the Caribbean were also included. US authorities had defended the measure by arguing that applicants from the listed countries were considered more likely to become dependent on government-funded assistance after entering the United States. The ruling came in a case brought by immigrant rights organisations, visa applicants and US citizens sponsoring family members from the affected countries. The plaintiffs challenged the State Department’s decision, arguing that the blanket suspension unlawfully restricted access to the immigrant visa process. The decision represents a legal setback for the Trump administration, which has pursued tougher immigration policies since returning to office. The administration has said its immigration measures are intended to strengthen national security and reduce pressure on public resources. Immigrant rights groups, however, have criticised several aspects of the crackdown. They have raised concerns about due process, discrimination and the treatment of ethnic minorities.
