Vance pledges military, diplomatic pressure on Iran

The United States will use military, economic and diplomatic measures to bring the conflict with Iran to an end, Vice President JD Vance has said, stressing that Washington remains committed to preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

In a television interview, Vance said negotiations with Iran remain difficult due to internal divisions within the country’s leadership. He claimed that while some factions in Iran want to end the conflict through diplomacy, others continue to support confrontation, making negotiations more complicated.

Despite the challenges, Vance expressed confidence that a settlement could eventually be reached, although he acknowledged the process would take time. He said the US hopes regional stability will improve and global oil prices will ease once tensions decline.

The vice president reiterated that the United States would continue using every available tool, including military strength, economic sanctions and diplomatic engagement, to achieve what he described as a lasting resolution.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump said he still prefers diplomacy over military action. Speaking at a public event, Trump said he would rather reach an agreement with Iran than resort to war, but warned that military action remains an option if negotiations fail.

Trump also dismissed reports suggesting the United States is facing shortages of key military ammunition. He insisted that the country has substantial stockpiles of weapons and said defence manufacturers are rapidly expanding production to meet future requirements.

The president further warned that individuals responsible for leaking classified information about US military capabilities would face legal action, saying authorities were actively pursuing those involved.

The developments come as tensions remain high around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes for oil exports.

At the same time, eight leading international shipping organisations have urged the United Nations to oppose any proposal to impose mandatory transit fees on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

In a joint letter addressed to the UN and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the organisations warned that introducing tolls would undermine the internationally recognised principle of free navigation and could increase shipping costs, fuel prices and inflation worldwide.

The maritime groups also cautioned that allowing such charges could create a dangerous precedent for other international waterways and disrupt global trade.

The appeal follows recent discussions between Iran and Oman on future arrangements for the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials said the two countries have reached preliminary understandings on several issues related to maritime traffic, although they clarified that the agreement does not mean the waterway will be fully reopened under a new system.

Separately, reports in US media claimed President Trump had questioned senior defence officials over alleged shortages of military munitions during a recent Cabinet meeting. According to the reports, concerns over weapon supplies had influenced military planning regarding Iran.

University officials stated that several operations have already been carried out on different parts of the campus, during which MCL teams captured stray dogs and took them into custody as part of the approved animal control mechanism. The administration has also shared details of these operations to highlight the progress made so far. Officials emphasized that the campaign is not a one-time activity but an ongoing effort aimed at ensuring long-term results. The latest operation has already commenced and will continue in the coming days to further reduce the presence of stray dogs across the university premises. The administration believes that sustained operations, coupled with close coordination between the university and civic authorities, will help create a safer and more secure environment for everyone on campus. The stray dog issue has remained a concern for students and employees, with many expressing worries about safety while moving between academic departments, hostels, and other university facilities. Responding to these concerns, the university administration reiterated its commitment to resolving the matter through legal and humane means rather than adopting measures that violate court directives. University officials also urged members of the campus community to cooperate with the ongoing operations and avoid interfering with the work of MCL teams. They stressed that public cooperation is essential for the success of the campaign and encouraged anyone noticing areas with a high concentration of stray dogs to report them to the relevant university offices so that timely action can be taken. Since culling has been prohibited, the focus remains on capturing, relocating, and managing stray dogs through the mechanisms prescribed by the competent authorities. They reaffirmed that the university will maintain close coordination with MCL until satisfactory and sustainable results are achieved.     Telecom operators invest $178.57 million in Pakistan’s 5G rollout

    Pakistan’s major telecom operators have invested an estimated $178.57 million in the deployment of 5G networks across the country up to June 2026, the Senate has been informed. The investment details were presented in a written reply submitted by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications in response to a question raised by Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri. According to the government’s data, Zong emerged as the largest investor in the country’s 5G rollout, committing around $98.9 million by June 2026. Jazz followed with an investment of approximately $59.67 million, while Ufone invested an estimated $20 million during the same period. The figures were based on information provided directly by the respective mobile network operators. No Foreign Investment Target Set for 5G Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications Shaza Fatima Khawaja told the Senate that the government had not imposed any specific foreign direct investment (FDI) target on telecom companies as part of the country’s 5G rollout policy. She said the Policy Directive for the Spectrum Auction, issued on January 6, 2026, did not include a requirement for operators to attract a particular amount of foreign investment for the deployment of 5G services. The minister clarified that the investment figures presented before the Senate represented data supplied by the operators themselves. Operators Plan Additional 5G Investment Telecom companies are also preparing to increase their investment in 5G infrastructure during fiscal year 2026-27. Jazz has projected an additional investment of approximately $30.33 million, while Zong expects to spend around $39.9 million on further 5G deployment during the year. A specific investment projection for Ufone was not available at this stage. According to the written response, the company’s future investment figures will be shared once its ongoing merger-related activities are completed. The government also noted that Ufone’s previously reported $20 million investment in the 5G rollout was an estimated figure. More Than 1,100 Sites Upgraded to 5G The Senate was also informed that mobile operators had upgraded 1,136 sites to support 5G services across Pakistan by June 2026. Punjab recorded the highest number of upgraded sites, with 587 locations, reflecting the province’s large subscriber base and extensive telecom infrastructure. The regional breakdown showed:  Punjab: 587 5G-upgraded sites  Sindh: 262 sites  Islamabad Capital Territory: 192 sites Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 64 sites Balochistan: 31 sites No 5G-upgraded sites were reported in Gilgit-Baltistan or Azad Jammu and Kashmir in the province-wise figures submitted to the Senate. Pakistan Has 10,499 Fiberized Sites The government’s response also provided an update on the country’s broader telecom infrastructure, particularly the expansion of fiber-optic connectivity. Pakistan had a total of 10,499 fiberized telecom sites, with the overall fiberization rate standing at approximately 17.2 percent. Punjab had the largest number of fiberized sites at 6,153, followed by Sindh with 2,121 and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 953. The figures for other regions were: Islamabad: 521 fiberized sites Balochistan: 417 sites Gilgit-Baltistan: 196 sites Azad Jammu and Kashmir: 138 sites Despite having fewer fiberized locations in absolute numbers, Gilgit-Baltistan recorded the highest fiberization rate at 36.3 percent. Islamabad ranked second with a rate of 30.4 percent. Meanwhile, Azad Jammu and Kashmir recorded the lowest fiberization rate at 9.5 percent. 5G Expansion Linked to Digital Connectivity The continued investment by telecom operators is expected to support the expansion of high-speed mobile connectivity and strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. The deployment of 5G technology is also being viewed as an important step toward improving mobile broadband capacity, supporting digital businesses and enabling emerging technologies that require faster and more reliable networks. With operators planning further investment during FY2026-27, the scale of Pakistan’s 5G network is expected to expand further. However, the pace of deployment will also depend on infrastructure development, fiberization, spectrum utilization and the completion of ongoing corporate and regulatory processes.

      Mary Egida Rivera, the actress who won the hearts of Marvel fans with her memorable appearance as Ned Leeds’ grandmother in Spider-Man: No Way Home, has passed away at the age of 82. Her family confirmed that Rivera died peacefully on April 15, 2026, in Honolulu, Hawaii, after suffering a stroke. The news became public this week after a family member shared the details with TMZ.  Although Rivera had only a brief role in the 2021 blockbuster, her performance left a lasting impression on audiences around the world. She portrayed the loving grandmother, or “Lola,” of Ned Leeds, played by Jacob Batalon. One of the film’s funniest scenes featured Rivera speaking Tagalog while asking Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man to clean the cobwebs from her ceiling, creating a heartfelt moment that quickly became a fan favorite.  According to her family, Rivera suffered a stroke that left her in a coma. Doctors reportedly warned that even if she regained consciousness, her chances of meaningful recovery were extremely low. After careful consideration, her loved ones made the difficult decision to remove her from life support. She later passed away peacefully and was cremated in Honolulu.  Born on June 2, 1943, in Iloilo, Philippines, Rivera later settled in Hawaii, where she built a life centered on family, education and community service. Before making her Hollywood debut, she worked as a teacher, radio broadcaster and church missionary. Her family said she was incredibly proud to represent the Filipino community in one of Marvel’s biggest films and cherished the opportunity to share the screen with stars including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire.  Tributes have continued to pour in from fans and colleagues following the announcement of her passing. Jacob Batalon honored his on-screen grandmother with a heartfelt social media message, writing, “Rest in paradise Lola.” Many fans also praised Rivera for bringing Filipino culture and the Tagalog language to a global audience through her unforgettable scene in the film.  Rivera is survived by her husband, Alejandro Rivera, four children, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. While her acting career was brief, her warmth, authenticity and pride in her heritage made her performance truly unforgettable. Her role in Spider-Man: No Way Home remains a touching reminder that even a small part can leave a lasting legacy in the hearts of millions.

She went on to issue a firm warning to those involved in producing or distributing manipulated content. “Consider this your formal notice to stop immediately. Any further misuse of my identity will result in legal action,” she added. Her statement reflects growing concern within the entertainment industry over the misuse of artificial intelligence, particularly technology capable of generating highly realistic fake images, videos and audio. Deepfake content has become increasingly sophisticated in recent years, making it more difficult for audiences to distinguish between authentic and fabricated material.     Heatwave pushes UK death toll towards 2022’s grim record

    Britain is edging dangerously close to matching one of its deadliest summers on record, and the peak heat month of August hasn’t even fully arrived yet. The UK Health Security Agency reported that an estimated 2,877 people have already died from heat-related causes this year. That number is nearly twice the total seen throughout all of 2025, and it’s steadily approaching the historic high recorded back in 2022. This latest update comes as the country deals with its fourth heatwave of the year. A string of unusually intense hot spells has already driven temperatures to record-breaking levels in parts of Britain during May and June. The extended dry spell has also worsened conditions on the ground, contributing to a rise in wildfires across several regions. Breaking the numbers down further, most deaths occurred across two distinct periods. Late May accounted for 753 fatalities, while a particularly severe June heatwave saw that number jump sharply to 2,124, prompting authorities to issue a rare red heat-health alert. Even though these figures only cover a two-month window, they already surpass the total number of heat-related deaths recorded across the entire previous year. Experts studying the data believe that roughly 42 percent of these deaths can be traced back to the effects of human-driven climate change. That estimate has reignited concern among scientists and public health officials, who warn that healthcare systems and at-risk populations are facing mounting pressure as extreme heat becomes more frequent. The crisis is not confined to the UK alone. Neighboring countries have also been hit hard, with wildfires sweeping through parts of France, Spain, and Greece. These fires have claimed the lives of several firefighters, forced thousands of residents to evacuate, and caused major disruptions to businesses and travel throughout the affected areas. France’s national health agency confirmed on Wednesday that the country recorded 5,764 excess deaths between June 17 and July 2 alone. Germany has faced a similarly troubling situation, with its national health body, the RKI, reporting on Thursday that around 9,800 people have died from heat-related causes so far this year. As temperatures remain stubbornly high across Europe, health officials continue urging caution, particularly for elderly individuals and those with existing health conditions who face the greatest risk during prolonged heat events.

    Taliban seeks improved ties with Pakistan

    The Taliban administration has expressed its desire to reduce tensions and improve relations with Pakistan, saying that continued disputes serve the interests of neither country. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said both sides should work to resolve outstanding issues through dialogue and cooperation. He noted that the closure of border crossings and restrictions faced by Afghan traders have contributed to strained relations and disrupted bilateral trade. Mujahid said the Taliban wants these issues to be addressed to facilitate smoother cross-border movement and strengthen economic ties between the two neighboring countries. He also acknowledged that trade with Pakistan has been affected in recent months, adding that Afghanistan has increased its economic engagement with Iran while pursuing new projects aimed at developing the country’s mineral resources. However, analysts have raised concerns over the transparency of some of the reported mining agreements and questioned whether sufficient oversight and accountability mechanisms are in place. The remarks come at a time when Pakistan and Afghanistan continue to face challenges in bilateral relations, including border management, trade disruptions and broader security concerns.
