Indian actress Mrunal Thakur has spoken out strongly against the growing misuse of artificial intelligence, warning that anyone creating or sharing deepfake content using her likeness without permission could face legal consequences.

The actress used her Instagram Stories on Monday to address the issue directly, expressing concern over the increasing circulation of AI-generated images and videos that falsely portray public figures. She made it clear that the unauthorized use of her identity is both unacceptable and unlawful.

“Creating or sharing deepfake content using my likeness is illegal and unacceptable,” Thakur wrote in her statement.

She went on to issue a firm warning to those involved in producing or distributing manipulated content.

“Consider this your formal notice to stop immediately. Any further misuse of my identity will result in legal action,” she added.

Her statement reflects growing concern within the entertainment industry over the misuse of artificial intelligence, particularly technology capable of generating highly realistic fake images, videos and audio. Deepfake content has become increasingly sophisticated in recent years, making it more difficult for audiences to distinguish between authentic and fabricated material.

Thakur is the latest Indian celebrity to publicly challenge the unauthorized use of AI-generated content involving their image. A number of prominent actors have already taken legal steps or sought court protection to safeguard their identities, photographs, voices and personality rights against misuse through artificial intelligence.

Among those who have raised concerns are Varun Dhawan, Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Shilpa Shetty, Preity Zinta, Suniel Shetty and Kartik Aaryan. Their actions highlight a wider effort within India’s film industry to protect celebrities from identity theft and misleading digital content created through AI tools.

The debate over deepfake technology intensified after Rashmika Mandanna became the target of a manipulated video that spread rapidly across social media platforms. The actress described the incident as “extremely scary” and stressed the need for stronger safeguards against the misuse of emerging technology.

Her comments sparked widespread public discussion about the ethical and legal challenges posed by AI-generated media. Since then, industry figures, legal experts and policymakers have increasingly called for stricter regulations to prevent the unauthorized creation and circulation of deepfake content.

Artificial intelligence has brought significant advancements across multiple industries, including entertainment, education and healthcare.     Pakistan posts Rs3.6tr primary surplus as fiscal position improves in FY2025-26

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan closed the financial year 2025-26 with a primary budget surplus of around Rs3.6 trillion, marking the third consecutive year of a surplus and allowing the country to comfortably meet a key fiscal condition agreed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The improvement came despite the government falling short of its tax collection targets, with stronger petroleum levy receipts, tighter expenditure controls and lower-than-expected debt servicing costs helping offset the revenue shortfall. According to the latest fiscal operations data released by the Ministry of Finance, the unadjusted primary surplus reached Rs3.63 trillion, equivalent to 2.6% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). The figure was approximately Rs464 billion higher than the IMF’s target of Rs3.16 trillion. The primary balance is considered an important indicator under Pakistan’s IMF programme because it measures the government’s fiscal position before interest payments on public debt. The latest figures indicate that the government maintained fiscal discipline despite continued pressure on revenues and expenditure. Overall fiscal deficit below target Pakistan’s overall budget deficit, after accounting for provincial cash surpluses, stood at approximately Rs3.3 trillion during FY2025-26. This was around Rs1.7 trillion lower than the amount initially projected in the federal budget. The federal government’s own deficit was recorded at Rs4.8 trillion, also significantly below the budgeted level. The better-than-expected outcome was primarily attributed to lower interest payments, stronger petroleum levy receipts and restrained development expenditure. Interest payments were around Rs1.3 trillion below the amount originally allocated in the budget. The government also collected approximately Rs101 billion more than its petroleum levy target, while federal development spending remained Rs82 billion below the initially approved allocation. The fiscal improvement also contributed to a moderation in the growth of public debt. Public debt increased by around 7% during the year, bringing some relief after several years of double-digit debt expansion. Provinces narrowly miss IMF cash surplus target The four provincial governments collectively generated a cash surplus of around Rs1.45 trillion during the fiscal year. Although the amount fell marginally short of the IMF’s combined requirement, the shortfall was only around Rs14 billion. Punjab contributed the largest share, recording a cash surplus of approximately Rs914 billion. Sindh posted a surplus of around Rs350 billion, followed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa with Rs165 billion and Balochistan with approximately Rs21 billion. Provincial governments, meanwhile, performed slightly better on revenue collection. Their combined tax receipts exceeded the IMF condition by around Rs18 billion, with collections crossing Rs1.2 trillion. FBR misses tax target Despite the overall improvement in the fiscal position, tax collection remained a major area of concern. The Federal Board of Revenue collected approximately Rs13 trillion during FY2025-26, falling nearly Rs1 trillion short of the IMF’s revised target. FBR tax receipts increased by about 11% compared with the previous year. However, this increase was broadly in line with nominal GDP growth, indicating that the tax-to-GDP ratio remained largely unchanged at around 10.3%. The figures suggest that additional revenue expected from new taxation and enforcement measures did not fully materialise. The government had anticipated around Rs700 billion in additional revenue from such measures. Non-tax revenue also remained below expectations by approximately Rs63 billion. Total non-tax receipts stood close to Rs5.1 trillion, including around Rs2.4 trillion in profits transferred by the central bank. Petroleum levy becomes key revenue source A major contributor to the stronger fiscal outcome was the petroleum levy. Collections under the petroleum levy climbed to around Rs1.567 trillion, representing an increase of approximately 28% over the previous year. The amount was also Rs101 billion above the target agreed with the IMF. The additional collection effectively represented roughly 25 days of petroleum price relief at a levy rate of Rs80 per litre on petrol and high-speed diesel. For the current financial year, the government has committed to collecting approximately Rs1.7 trillion through the petroleum levy. Meeting this objective is expected to require maintaining the levy at around Rs80 per litre, subject to the applicable petroleum pricing mechanism and market conditions. Development spending remains restrained The government’s fiscal consolidation strategy also affected development expenditure. Federal development spending was recorded at around Rs918 billion, approximately Rs82 billion below the originally approved budget allocation. However, the amount was still around Rs100 billion higher than the subsequently revised allocation. The figures reflect the government’s efforts to contain expenditure and prioritise fiscal targets amid pressure from debt servicing and revenue mobilisation. Debt servicing costs fall Lower-than-expected debt servicing provided another significant boost to the government’s fiscal position. The Ministry of Finance reported that debt servicing remained around Rs6.95 trillion during the year, compared with the budgeted amount of approximately Rs8.2 trillion. The government attributed the savings to tight fiscal management, improved cash handling and the early retirement of around Rs1.9 trillion in domestic debt. These measures helped reduce domestic debt servicing costs by nearly Rs1.97 trillion compared with the original estimates. Statistical discrepancy highlighted The fiscal operations report also identified a statistical discrepancy of around Rs853 billion across the federal and provincial accounts. According to the Ministry of Finance, the discrepancy was linked largely to changes in cash balances and differences in the recording and reporting of financial data. The negative discrepancy indicated that cash inflows were higher than recorded outflows. At the federal level, the discrepancy stood at approximately Rs448 billion. The ministry attributed the difference mainly to changes in commercial bank deposits as well as variations in reporting and accounting adjustments involving the State Bank of Pakistan, FBR and Economic Affairs Division. Provincial accounts showed a combined statistical discrepancy of approximately Rs405 billion. Punjab accounted for around Rs266 billion, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Rs95 billion, Balochistan Rs72 billion and Sindh around Rs28 billion. The ministry said movements in commercial bank deposits were among the principal factors behind the provincial differences. IMF review ahead The improved fiscal performance is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s position ahead of the next IMF assessment.       Skardu: Rescue teams have recovered the bodies of eight climbers who went missing after a massive avalanche struck Broad Peak, one of the world’s highest mountains, in northern Pakistan. According to officials, four additional bodies were located during the latest phase of the rescue mission, bringing the total number of recovered victims to eight. Earlier in the day, rescue teams had already found four bodies in the avalanche-hit area. Of the four bodies recovered most recently, three have been airlifted by helicopter to Skardu for identification and further legal formalities. Rescue authorities are continuing efforts to locate the remaining two missing climbers, despite extremely challenging weather conditions, difficult terrain, and the constant risk of further avalanches. The search operation remains active on Broad Peak, with rescue personnel working around the clock to find the missing mountaineers. Helicopters, local rescue teams, and experienced high-altitude climbers are taking part in the mission, while authorities continue to monitor weather conditions that could affect ongoing operations. Provincial Minister for Tourism Nek Nam Karim said the government is making every possible effort to locate the remaining climbers. He stated that the Tourism Department is providing full logistical support to rescue teams, including transportation, coordination, and essential equipment required for high-altitude search operations. The group of missing climbers represents several countries, highlighting the international nature of mountaineering expeditions in Pakistan. The team includes climbers from the United States, China, Nepal, Oman, and Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi, who remains among those unaccounted for. Every year, experienced mountaineers from across the globe travel to Pakistan in an attempt to summit the towering peak. However, climbing Broad Peak is extremely hazardous. Mountaineers face unpredictable weather, heavy snowfall, strong winds, crevasses, and the constant threat of avalanches. Even highly skilled climbers can find themselves in life-threatening situations due to rapidly changing mountain conditions. The latest tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the dangers associated with high-altitude mountaineering. Rescue officials have acknowledged that operations at such elevations are exceptionally difficult because of thin air, freezing temperatures, and limited access to the affected areas. As the search for the remaining missing climbers continues, hopes remain that rescue teams may still locate them. At the same time, condolences continue to pour in for the victims and their families.     PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has urged the government and protesters in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) to agree on the formation of a truth and reconciliation commission to investigate the violence and political tensions that have gripped the region. He said maintaining peace, fairness and transparency was particularly important during the ongoing AJK elections, arguing that the issue should not be treated as a contest between winners and losers. According to Bilawal, the PPP had been advocating a truth and reconciliation commission for about a month. He proposed that protesters suspend their demonstrations while the commission investigates the incidents and presents its findings. He criticised both the authorities and protesters for failing to compromise, warning that ordinary Kashmiris were suffering despite having no connection with either side. Bilawal said those responsible for violence should be identified through an investigation rather than being punished on the streets. He also accused the state of giving greater importance to the interests of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) than to the interests of Kashmir. Bilawal questions AJK election process Bilawal also criticised the conduct of the AJK elections, particularly the violence and allegations of irregularities reported during polling in parts of the region. He claimed that the PPP had a strong mandate in Mirpur and alleged that polling stations were forcibly occupied and party polling agents removed. He also accused rival political workers of using violence to influence the electoral process. According to preliminary election results, the PML-N won nine of the 13 constituencies in the first phase, while the PPP secured four seats. Bilawal rejected the results in several constituencies and alleged that the PPP’s mandate had been compromised. He questioned how PPP candidate Chaudhry Yasin could lose his home constituency and described the result as unacceptable. He also criticised the decision to conduct the AJK elections in three phases, alleging that the arrangement had failed to prevent electoral malpractice. The PPP chairman referred to reports of violence, firing and the death of a political worker, while also raising concerns over internet disruptions in parts of the region. He called on the authorities to decide whether national interests or political considerations would guide their actions in AJK. Bilawal warned that continued violence and political instability could damage the future of the region. He urged PPP workers to remain peaceful but said the party would not accept attacks on its supporters or the alleged seizure of polling stations. He also appealed for political restraint, saying that the PPP wanted to pursue peaceful politics but would continue to defend what it considers its electoral mandate.
