Indian ex-editor jailed 10 years for rape

An Indian court has sentenced former investigative magazine editor Tarun Tejpal to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment after convicting him in a rape case involving a junior colleague, bringing a high-profile legal battle that has spanned more than a decade to a major turning point.

The case stems from allegations that Tejpal sexually assaulted a female journalist inside a lift at a luxury hotel in the coastal state of Goa during a media event in November 2013.

A trial court had acquitted Tejpal in 2021 of charges including rape, sexual harassment and wrongful restraint. However, the Goa government challenged the verdict before the Bombay High Court, which overturned the acquittal and found him guilty.

The court ordered Tejpal to surrender within two weeks to begin serving his sentence. In addition to the prison term, he was directed to pay a financial penalty imposed by the court.

Following the verdict, Tejpal announced that he would challenge the conviction before India’s Supreme Court. He maintained that the case against him was politically motivated and claimed he had faced a prolonged campaign against him over the past 13 years.

Tejpal was first arrested in 2013 after the allegations surfaced and spent several months in custody before being granted bail by the Supreme Court. Throughout the proceedings, he consistently denied the allegations and argued that the prosecution was driven by political considerations.

The case attracted nationwide attention because it emerged during a period of heightened public concern over violence against women in India. Public debate over sexual assault had intensified following the 2012 gang rape and murder of a young woman in New Delhi, which led to widespread protests and significant reforms to India’s criminal laws on sexual offences.

The conviction also had a lasting impact on Tehelka, once regarded as one of India’s leading investigative publications. The scandal severely damaged the magazine’s reputation and influence, despite continuing operations under new management.

Independence Day celebrations were also held at King Edward Medical University in Lahore. Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique attended the ceremony as chief guest, cut the Independence Day cake and led prayers for the country’s security and prosperity. He said every citizen must play a role in Pakistan’s development. A flag-hoisting ceremony was also organised at the Sports Board Punjab. The secretary sports, director general sports and other officials and employees attended the event. The national flag was hoisted and participants observed a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Pakistan. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said Independence Day should also serve as an opportunity to reflect on the objectives and sacrifices behind the creation of Pakistan. He said the country was established in 1947 on the principles of unity, discipline and firm faith, but 79 years later the nation had still not fully achieved national cohesion. Fazlur Rehman called for overcoming regional, linguistic and group-based divisions and urged people to move forward as one Pakistani nation. He said the objectives of Pakistan’s creation included an Islamic system, a prosperous economy and stable democracy. Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said Pakistan was created on the basis of the Two-Nation Theory but the country had yet to fully realise the objectives for which it was established. He criticised successive governments for making people’s lives difficult and said the implementation of the Quran and Sunnah was essential to achieving Pakistan’s true destination. In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Governor Faisal Karim Kundi hoisted the national flag at Governor House. Iran’s Consul General Ali Banafsheh Khah also attended the ceremony. Prayers were offered for Pakistan’s development, prosperity and stability, while Kundi and the Iranian consul general jointly cut the cake marking the country’s 79th Independence Day. K-P Adviser on Finance Muzammil Aslam said the province had witnessed significant improvements and called for greater efforts to strengthen the region. He said the provincial government had faced serious financial difficulties when it took office but the situation had subsequently improved. Aslam said officials should set clear targets for what they wanted to achieve before the next Independence Day. He also stressed the need for collective efforts to eliminate terrorism from the province. K-P Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah said the objectives behind the creation of Pakistan would be fulfilled. He said the people would not hesitate to make sacrifices for the country and would continue working towards its progress and stability. Federal Minister for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja also congratulated the nation on Independence Day. She paid tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives defending the country and described the armed forces as guarantors of peace and development. She said Pakistan’s growing international standing reflected the efforts of its political and military leadership. According to her, Pakistan is increasingly recognised globally for its commitment to peace, development, defence and its vision of a digital future.

Election officials stated that the incident prompted an immediate response from law enforcement agencies to ensure the integrity of the polling process. Ali Shan Soni was contesting the election from LA-6 Samahni on the ticket of the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party.     ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has described the recently signed Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye as a significant step towards greater regional unity and peace, saying the pact has brought the three countries closer. The prime minister made the remarks on Friday during a meeting with Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Engineer Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadley, who called on him at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad. The Makkah agreement was signed on Aug 7 by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Makkah. The agreement provides a framework for stronger collective defence cooperation and states that an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack against all. Sharif said the agreement had further strengthened the strategic relationship among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye while conveying a message of unity and peace across the region. The prime minister also stressed that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia should now build on their strategic partnership by expanding economic and agricultural cooperation. He said stronger trade and investment ties could help transform the longstanding relationship between the two countries into a broader and more mutually beneficial economic partnership.       ISLAMABAD: Adviser to Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is expected to secure a two-thirds majority in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly after elections for the reserved seats. Speaking about the political situation in Azad Kashmir, Rana Sanaullah said that PML-N would form its government in the region with a clear majority. He stated that the party had secured victory on 25 seats and would achieve a two-thirds majority once the elections for reserved seats were completed. The prime minister’s adviser also expressed his appreciation for Sajid Iqbal, who was elected from LA-14. He thanked the newly elected lawmaker for deciding to support PML-N and said that Sajid Iqbal would work alongside the party for the development and improvement of Azad Kashmir. Rana Sanaullah said that the people of Azad Kashmir had given PML-N a mandate to improve the situation in the region and address the issues faced by its people. He emphasized that the party would fulfill the commitments it had made during the election campaign and would work to bring positive changes to the lives of citizens. He further said that the AJK Legislative Assembly would be allowed to function with its full constitutional powers. However, he claimed that only a very small portion of the protesters, estimated at around one to one-and-a-half percent, might be influenced by elements attempting to create unrest or provoke violence. He maintained that the majority of the people participating in the protests were ordinary citizens expressing their concerns. Rana Sanaullah’s remarks come amid heightened political activity in Azad Kashmir following the recent elections. The expected formation of a PML-N government, along with the possibility of the party securing a two-thirds majority through reserved seats, could significantly strengthen its position in the AJK Legislative Assembly.     Meer Baloch Through the columns of your respected newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authorities to the increasing number of road accidents caused by rash driving. Many drivers do not follow traffic rules and drive at very high speed. As a result, they lose control of their vehicles and cause serious accidents. Innocent people are injured or even lose their lives, and the drivers themselves also become victims of these accidents. Most of these accidents can be prevented if drivers drive carefully and obey traffic laws. The government should strictly enforce traffic rules, impose heavy fines on reckless drivers, and create awareness about road safety. Drivers should always wear seat belts, avoid using mobile phones while driving, and keep their speed within the legal limit. I hope the concerned authorities will take immediate action to reduce road accidents and make our roads safer for everyone.
