Transporters announce nationwide wheel-jam strike

A nationwide wheel-jam strike is set to begin on August 8 after transporters’ associations announced a complete suspension of freight operations in protest against rising operational costs, frequent fuel price revisions and what they described as unfair treatment by authorities.

The Pakistan Mini Mazda Association and the All Pakistan Goods Transport Owners Association said the strike could bring cargo movement across the country to a standstill, warning that imports and exports may face serious disruptions if the government fails to address their concerns.

Addressing a joint press conference in Lahore, Pakistan Mini Mazda Association Central President Tanveer Jatt urged the government to hold immediate talks with transport representatives. He demanded that petroleum prices be revised on a monthly basis instead of daily and called for relief from toll taxes and excessive traffic fines, arguing that current policies have placed an unbearable financial burden on transport operators.

All Pakistan Goods Transport Owners Association President Chaudhry Owais Gujjar stressed that axle-load regulations should be enforced strictly according to the law and alleged that corruption had become widespread during implementation. He also claimed that transporters, despite paying billions of rupees annually in toll taxes, continue to face poor road infrastructure, which contributes to accidents.

Gujjar further accused officials of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Secretariat and the Highway Patrol Police of routinely harassing transporters on highways, urging the authorities to focus on their official responsibilities instead of creating difficulties for drivers.

Transport leader Khalid Arain said the government’s policies had left transporters with no option but to protest. He maintained that transport operators in Pakistan receive little support despite paying advance taxes and claimed that no compensation had been provided to vehicle owners whose trucks were destroyed in militant attacks.

He also criticized the heavy use of traffic fines, saying overloading rules should be enforced through consultation rather than punitive measures. Arain expressed hope that the dispute could be resolved quickly if meaningful negotiations were held between the government and transport representatives before the strike begins.

Another official, Henna Virkkunen, said the goal is fair competition. Google now has 60 days to fix its practices. Google is not happy. A company spokesperson said the changes will hurt features people like, such as quick pricing for hotels and flights. He said the ruling is not really about fair competition, it is making Google’s products worse to please a small number of complainers. Even so, there is good news for Google too. The EU said Google has already started testing new ways of showing search results more fairly. It called this real progress. The EU may also apply the same rules to Google’s AI tools, like AI Overviews. Talks about this are still ongoing. Google’s changes to its app store rules were also seen as a step in the right direction. This fight is happening while tensions rise between the US and EU. The Trump administration says Europe is unfairly targeting American companies and has threatened tariffs in response. Some US lawmakers agree. Google’s fine comes after the EU already fined Apple and Meta last year under the same law. It shows the EU is serious about controlling big tech, even as pressure grows from the US side.

    Gold price in Pakistan rises by Rs1,700 per tola

    Gold prices moved higher across Pakistan on Monday, tracking an upward trend in the international bullion market, according to the latest rates issued by the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA). The price of 24-karat gold per tola increased by Rs1,700, taking the new rate to Rs428,436. The recovery comes after a sharp decline recorded in the previous trading session, when the precious metal had fallen by Rs3,700 per tola to settle at Rs426,736 on Saturday. The price of 10 grams of 24-karat gold also witnessed an increase, climbing by Rs1,457 to reach Rs367,314 in local markets. Market analysts said the rise in domestic gold prices reflects the positive movement in global bullion markets, where investor demand strengthened amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the global economic outlook and expectations regarding interest rate policies. In the international market, the price of gold gained $17 per ounce, pushing the bullion rate to $4,060 per ounce, including a premium of $20. The increase in global prices was mirrored in Pakistan’s local market, where gold rates are largely influenced by international trends and fluctuations in the value of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar. Meanwhile, silver prices also registered a notable increase. The price of silver per tola rose by Rs54, reaching Rs6,291 in the domestic market.

    Authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province have issued urgent warnings regarding potential glacial lake outburst floods, urging residents and tourists to stay away from rivers, streams, and narrow mountain valleys. The disaster alert follows persistent heavy monsoon rains that have killed at least 107 people and injured 344 others across the country since late June, with the heaviest casualties reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab due to flash floods, structural collapses, and electrocutions. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has highlighted specific high-risk northern districts, including Upper and Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, Upper Kohistan, and Mansehra, where warm temperatures combined with intermittent rainfall are rapidly accelerating glacial melt. Local administrations have been instructed to monitor vulnerable zones closely, with officials advising the public to watch for sudden changes in river water colour or unusual mountain sounds that could signal an imminent surge.

    Flash floods hit DG Khan, hundreds rescued

    By MIR Hunbal Birmani   DG Khan: Heavy rains in the Sulaiman Range have caused flash flooding in several small and large hill torrents in Sakhi Sarwar and adjoining areas, creating difficulties for tourists returning from Mubarki, Yakbai and other tourist destinations, as well as travellers and residents of tribal areas, in crossing the waterways. Taking notice of the situation, Deputy Commissioner and Senior Commandant Dera Ghazi Khan Muhammad Usman Khalid directed an immediate rescue operation under the supervision of Political Assistant Koh-e-Sulaiman Ameer Taimoor. The Border Military Police (BMP) mobilised its personnel and vehicles and reached various routes affected by the hill torrents to rescue stranded tourists, travellers, women, children and residents of tribal areas, along with their belongings, and shift them to safe locations. On the instructions of Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Usman Khalid, BMP personnel also helped private vehicles and motorcycles cross the flooded hill torrents. At some locations, motorcycles and luggage were carried on their shoulders to help people reach safer places. During the rescue operation, the valuable belongings and vehicles of tourists and travellers were also safely moved to secure locations. The BMP team also transported a woman who was on her way to hospital for delivery in an official vehicle. Due to the timely actions of the district administration and the BMP, hundreds of tourists, travellers and local residents were rescued from difficulties caused by the flash floods and shifted to safe places Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Usman Khalid said that, in accordance with the special instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, all necessary arrangements had been completed in view of the monsoon rains. Teams of the district administration, Border Military Police, Baloch Levies and other relevant departments had been deployed at important routes near the hill torrents to ensure an immediate response to any emergency situation. He urged citizens and tourists to avoid going near hill torrents during rainfall and to follow the instructions issued by the administration. “The protection of the lives and property of the people is the top priority of the district administration,” he said. While on other hand , Senior officials on Thursday visited hill torrent structures and flood-prone areas in Rajan pur district to review the situation and preparedness measures. The visit was conducted by commissioner Dera Ghazi Khan ch.Ashfaq , Chief Engineer Irrigation, Dera Ghazi Khan, the Superintending Engineer Irrigation, Additional Deputy Commissioner Revenue Rajan pur, Assistant Commissioners of Jam pur and Rajan pur, the In-charge of Rescue 1122, and other relevant officials. The officials inspected the Kaha Hill Torrent siphon at RD-145 and Pull Pathan Camp at Tayyab Drain. According to officials, a peak discharge of 40,000 cusecs was recorded at Darrah, the originating point of the Kaha Hill Torrent, yesterday. However, a major portion of the floodwater dissipated during its passage, and only around 2,000 cusecs had reached RD-145 so far. The Irrigation Department has established eight camps in the area, equipped with the necessary machinery, equipment and manpower to deal with any emergency situation. Teams of the District Administration Rajan pur, Irrigation Department and Rescue 1122 are actively monitoring the situation and remain vigilant.

    Monsoon rains, floods disrupt life across Pakistan

    Monsoon rains and flooding have disrupted daily life in several parts of the country, with rising water levels and overflowing streams causing damage and cutting off road links. In Mianwali, the rising water level of the Indus River caused a protective embankment to breach, allowing floodwater to enter nearby residential areas. Meanwhile, low-level flooding continues along the Ravi River. In Dadu, rising water levels in the Gaj River have cut off road access to more than 10 villages, leaving residents facing difficulties in travelling and accessing essential supplies. Heavy rain is also continuing in Nangarparkar, Tharparkar, where more than 150 millimetres of rain has been recorded over the past two days. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has also released rainfall figures for Karachi, showing that several parts of the city received rain overnight. In Gilgit-Baltistan, rain in Chilas and surrounding areas has caused streams and waterways to swell, raising concerns about further disruption. The Astore Valley Road has remained closed for the past six days, creating shortages of essential food and other supplies in affected areas. The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain in parts of Sindh and southern Punjab today. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious as further rainfall could worsen the flooding situation.

    San Francisco Unicorns secured a hard-fought five-run victory over Perth Scorchers XI in their Global Super League (GSL) 2026 clash at Providence Stadium on Sunday, thanks to an outstanding all-round team performance led by Hammad Azam.
