ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has praised the singers, performers and production team behind a new Balochi patriotic song released by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) for Independence Day.

The prime minister shared the song’s video on X and expressed his appreciation for everyone involved in the project.

Shehbaz said the song beautifully reflected the spirit of love for Pakistan. He added that the patriotic composition had filled him with pride.

The prime minister particularly acknowledged the artists and singers for presenting the national message through the Balochi language. He said the song showcased the cultural richness of Balochistan while reinforcing feelings of patriotism.

He also commended the producers and other members of the team for their contribution. According to Shehbaz, their efforts had successfully conveyed a powerful message of devotion to the homeland.

The Balochi-language song forms part of the Independence Day celebrations being held across Pakistan. It combines patriotic sentiments with the region’s distinctive cultural identity.

The prime minister said such creative initiatives help highlight Pakistan’s linguistic and cultural diversity. He noted that regional languages provide meaningful ways to express national pride and strengthen a shared sense of identity.

Independence Day preparations are underway across the country, with patriotic songs, cultural programmes and other activities planned to mark the occasion.

    MEXICO CITY: A dangerous flesh-eating parasite known as the New World screwworm is spreading through parts of Mexico and Central America, with hundreds of human infections reported and growing concern over its potential impact on livestock and animal health. The parasite is the larval stage of a particular fly. Unlike ordinary flies, the female screwworm fly can lay eggs in open wounds or vulnerable areas of living animals and humans. The eggs can hatch within about a day, after which the larvae enter the wound and feed on living tissue. The infection, known as myiasis, can become severe if treatment is delayed. In serious cases, the larvae can damage muscles and even reach deeper tissues and bones. A study published in a medical journal linked to US health authorities examined 202 confirmed human cases recorded in Mexico between April 2025 and March 2026. Researchers found that reported infections increased sharply, rising from roughly three cases a week in 2025 to more than nine cases a week during 2026. More than half of the patients examined had infections involving their legs. Other cases affected the head, neck, nose, mouth and eyes, highlighting the parasite’s ability to invade different parts of the body through wounds or vulnerable tissue. The study reported six deaths among the patients examined, although researchers directly linked only one of those deaths to screwworm infection. The average age of patients was about 61, while 72 per cent were men. Researchers also found that 77 per cent of those infected had at least one pre-existing medical condition, potentially increasing their vulnerability to complications. The parasite is considered particularly dangerous for livestock because its larvae feed on living tissue. Untreated infections can cause serious wounds, weaken animals and, in severe cases, prove fatal. The resurgence has also raised concerns in the United States. The country had previously eliminated the New World screwworm after decades of control efforts, achieving eradication in 1966. However, the parasite returned to the spotlight after an infected calf was confirmed in Texas’s Zavala County in June 2026, according to international reports. The development has heightened fears that the parasite could spread further north, particularly through livestock movement and other routes. Health and agricultural authorities face the difficult task of controlling the parasite while detecting infections early. For people, experts generally stress the importance of seeking medical attention for unusual or worsening wounds, particularly after exposure in areas where screwworm is circulating. The outbreak serves as a reminder that a tiny insect can create a major public-health and agricultural challenge when conditions allow a dangerous parasite to spread.

According to sources, the circular debt increased further due to rising energy prices amid the US-Iran war. During the talks with the IMF, the government will discuss targets related to energy-sector reforms including circular debt in the electricity and gas sectors. Pakistan will also brief the IMF on its progress toward achieving economic reform targets. According to sources, the Prime Minister has directed the economic team to prepare an alternative plan instead of further increasing electricity prices. Pakistan will brief the IMF on the targets set under the structural benchmarks. If the talks are successful, they will pave the way for the release of the fifth tranche under the current loan programme. According to sources, Pakistan could receive approximately $1 billion as the fifth tranche. In addition, Pakistan may receive around $200 million in additional funding to help address losses caused by climate change.

According to the assessment, Islamabad successfully facilitated communication between the United States and Iran and helped bring a global power and a major regional power into direct negotiations. The report described Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement as significant, arguing that Islamabad managed to perform a role that several major powers, including China, France, Germany, India and the United Kingdom, had been unable to achieve. The analysis further noted that talks between American and Iranian representatives in Islamabad continued for more than 20 hours. It described the discussions as the highest-level direct contact between the United States and Iran since the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Although Washington and Tehran subsequently accused each other of violating the terms of a ceasefire, the two sides did not completely abandon the diplomatic process, according to the analysis. The report therefore argued that it would be inaccurate to hold the mediator responsible for the failure of the process, stressing that Pakistan’s role should instead be viewed in the context of its efforts to keep communication channels open between the two sides. The assessment highlights Islamabad’s growing diplomatic role in attempts to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran and underscores Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate dialogue during a period of heightened regional instability.
