President Masoud Pezeshkian meets Supreme Leader M…

TEHRAN: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has held an important meeting with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei as speculation over the president’s future continues to attract attention amid heightened tensions with the United States and Israel.

The meeting reportedly came as Pezeshkian entered the third year of his presidency. It also followed reports suggesting that the Iranian president was considering stepping down, claims he has rejected. Iranian authorities have previously dismissed resignation reports as unfounded, while Pezeshkian has publicly indicated that he intends to continue serving.

According to statements attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei on social media, the discussions covered a wide range of economic, military and strategic issues facing Iran.

Among the topics were the economic needs of ordinary Iranians, the country’s military situation, access to resources and management of the Iranian rial, foreign currency and energy costs. The two leaders also discussed economic relations with foreign partners and the wider implications of the confrontation with Washington and Israel.

The meeting comes at a particularly sensitive moment for Tehran. Iran remains under pressure from the continuing regional conflict and economic difficulties, while efforts to engage Washington have faced repeated obstacles.

The reported contact is also notable because Pezeshkian recently said that reaching Mojtaba Khamenei had been difficult, prompting speculation about the supreme leader’s health and whereabouts. Reports in recent days have offered conflicting accounts about how and where senior Iranian officials have been able to meet him.

Meanwhile, Iran’s diplomatic efforts with the United States remain uncertain. According to the material cited by Iranian officials, negotiations have been reduced largely to messages exchanged through intermediaries after earlier attempts failed to produce a lasting agreement.

The political backdrop has also been complicated by reported tensions between the presidency and powerful military-security institutions. Some reports have suggested disagreements over decision-making and the conduct of Iran’s response to the conflict, although details remain contested.

Pezeshkian’s political position has therefore become a subject of renewed attention. He was elected president in July 2024 following the death of former President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash.

Mojtaba Khamenei, meanwhile, became Iran’s supreme leader in March 2026 following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during the conflict.

Against this backdrop, the latest meeting between the president and supreme leader carries significance beyond routine government business, particularly as Iran confronts economic pressures, military uncertainty and difficult relations with Washington.

For now, however, Pezeshkian remains in office, while reports of his resignation have been publicly rejected.

    Chinese teenager temporarily loses hearing

A Chinese teenager temporarily lost his hearing after spending four hours listening closely to the loud buzzing sounds of cicadas during a camping trip. The unusual incident highlights that although natural sounds are generally considered harmless, prolonged exposure to certain sounds in nature can sometimes affect human health. The 18-year-old teenager, identified by his surname Wang, was camping in a forest in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China, when he began listening to the continuous sounds of hundreds of cicadas. The insects, which are known for their loud and distinctive calls, continued making noise for several hours. Wang noticed that the sound of the cicadas became particularly loud around noon. Despite this, he remained in the forest until the evening. After spending several hours exposed to the loud buzzing, he began experiencing ringing in his ears. He also felt that his ears were blocked or unusually full. As the cicadas gradually became quieter toward the evening, Wang realized that something was wrong with his hearing. He could no longer hear the sounds of birds singing around him, and he was unable to hear notification sounds from his mobile phone. Concerned that he might have suffered permanent hearing loss, he immediately went to a hospital for medical attention. Doctors at the hospital examined both of Wang’s ears and found signs of swelling. He was given medication and advised to stay away from loud noises for at least 14 days. Fortunately, his condition improved with treatment and rest. After approximately two weeks, Wang’s hearing returned to normal. Senior ENT specialist Dr. Li Jie from the hospital affiliated with Ningbo University No. 1 Hospital explained that many people mistakenly believe sounds produced by nature cannot harm the ears. According to him, natural sounds can also become harmful when people are exposed to them at high levels or for extended periods. Cicadas are considered among the noisiest insects in the world. However, a single cicada normally does not pose a serious threat to human hearing because its sound rarely exceeds 70 decibels. The situation can be different when hundreds or even thousands of cicadas call at the same time. A large group of cicadas can collectively produce sound levels exceeding 85 decibels. Exposure to sounds at or above this level for extended periods can increase the risk of hearing damage. The risk becomes greater when the exposure continues for several hours without adequate breaks. Wang’s experience serves as a reminder that people should not assume every natural sound is automatically safe. Whether the sound comes from insects, animals, machinery, music or other sources, prolonged exposure to loud noise can place significant stress on the ears. Experts generally recommend moving away from extremely loud environments, taking regular breaks from noise and seeking medical attention if symptoms such as persistent ringing, blocked ears or sudden hearing loss occur. In Wang’s case, timely medical treatment and avoiding loud sounds helped him recover fully. The incident also demonstrates the importance of protecting hearing during outdoor activities. While camping and spending time in nature can be enjoyable and relaxing, people should remain aware of their surroundings and avoid prolonged exposure to unusually loud sounds.

Rain inundates homes, shops in Rawalpindi

Heavy rain in Rawalpindi has caused flooding in several low-lying areas, creating difficulties for residents. Water entered homes in Sadiqabad and Dhoke Elahi Bakhsh. Residents faced problems as rainwater accumulated inside residential areas. Several major roads were also affected. Rainwater collected on Murree Road, Rawal Road and Dhoke Khaba, disrupting traffic and making movement difficult. The situation became more difficult as WASA drainage teams had yet to reach some affected areas. Residents were waiting for authorities to clear the accumulated water. Water also entered shops in some areas, causing inconvenience to traders and residents. Meanwhile, the rain in Rawalpindi and Islamabad later stopped. Following the end of the rainfall, the water level in Nullah Lai began to fall. At Kattarian, the water level dropped to around 14 feet. At the Gawalmandi Bridge, the water level was recorded at around 16 feet. The rainfall has highlighted the vulnerability of low-lying areas in Rawalpindi to urban flooding. Residents have called for timely drainage operations to prevent rainwater from entering homes and businesses. The weather department has also forecast rain at some places in Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Authorities are expected to remain alert in areas vulnerable to flooding and water accumulation.

Whoopi Goldberg defends Elliot Page’s casting in The Odyssey

Whoopi Goldberg has stepped forward to defend the casting of Elliot Page in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, delivering a pointed and characteristically direct response to the wave of criticism that has been directed at the actor since the film’s release. Speaking on Tuesday’s episode of The View, Goldberg addressed the backlash head-on after a clip was played of conservative commentator Ben Shapiro describing Page’s role as an “absolute puzzler” and taking aim at the actor’s appearance and voice. Goldberg’s response was blunt and unapologetic. “A lot of conservatives who see this are going to feel the same way. That’s okay,” she said. “But I don’t understand. Why go see the movie? If you don’t want to see it, don’t go see it. Why do you care who’s cast in it?” She continued: “I don’t understand this idea that if we hate it, everybody must hate it because we hate it for this reason. You don’t like Elliot Page? Don’t go see the damn movie. Don’t do it. We will be okay if you don’t go see it.” Page, who is trans, plays Sinon in the film, a cousin of Matt Damon’s Odysseus. The casting drew significant online criticism, some of it amplified after Elon Musk weighed in on social media, initially claiming incorrectly that Page would be playing the warrior Achilles. Despite the inaccuracy being pointed out, the backlash continued and widened. Page is not the only cast member to have faced criticism over their casting. Lupita Nyong’o, who plays both Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra in the film, has also been subjected to racially charged criticism over her dual role, highlighting a pattern of commentary around the film’s diverse ensemble that goes well beyond questions of artistic interpretation. Fellow View panelist Alyssa Farah Griffin also pushed back on the criticism during the segment, arguing that the film’s themes of family, faith and the consequences of war are broad and universal enough to resonate across different audiences, including those who had voiced objections before seeing the film. What the controversy has not managed to do is dent the film’s commercial performance. The Odyssey opened in theatres on July 17 and crossed $300 million worldwide within days, making it one of the biggest releases of Christopher Nolan’s career and one of the year’s most significant box office events so far. For Goldberg, the message was simple: the film exists, it is performing, and those who object to its casting choices have every right to stay away. What they do not have, in her view, is the right to demand that everyone else feels the same.
