Rising fuel taxes add to motorists’ burden

Consumers are facing a growing burden of taxes and other charges on petrol and high-speed diesel.

Official documents show that the difference between the basic cost and retail price of petrol is Rs139.93 per litre. For high-speed diesel, the difference stands at Rs116.10 per litre.

The documents show that the basic cost of one litre of petrol is Rs197.69. However, consumers are currently paying Rs327.62 per litre.

Several taxes, levies and margins are included in the retail price. These charges significantly increase the amount paid by consumers at fuel stations.

Petrol carries a petroleum levy of Rs80 per litre. A climate support levy of Rs5 is also imposed.

The price also includes Rs21.24 in customs duty. An Inland Freight Equalisation Margin of Rs7.48 is charged per litre.

Oil marketing companies receive a margin of Rs7.87 per litre. Dealers are paid a margin of Rs8.64 per litre.

As a result, consumers pay Rs130.23 per litre in combined levies, taxes and margins on petrol.

The situation is similar for high-speed diesel. Its basic cost is Rs264.76 per litre. However, its retail price has been fixed at Rs380.86 per litre.

According to the documents, consumers pay around Rs116 per litre in levies, taxes and different margins on high-speed diesel.

The petroleum levy on high-speed diesel is Rs74.28 per litre. The fuel also carries a climate support levy of Rs5 per litre.

Customs duty accounts for another Rs15.68 per litre. The Inland Freight Equalisation Margin stands at Rs4.63.

Oil marketing companies receive a margin of Rs7.87 per litre. Dealers receive Rs8.64 per litre as their margin.

The figures show that taxes, levies and various margins form a significant portion of the final prices of both fuels.

The additional charges directly affect motorists and consumers. They also increase transportation and operating costs for businesses that depend heavily on fuel.

The rising cost of petrol and diesel can also put pressure on the prices of goods and services. Transport operators, traders and other businesses often pass higher fuel costs on to consumers.

    Pakistan’s power regulator has approved a Rs0.75 per unit increase in electricity prices for consumers across the country under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism. According to a notification issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the revised tariff applies to the June 2026 monthly fuel cost adjustment. The increase will also affect consumers of K-Electric, with the additional charges appearing in August electricity bills. Earlier, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had requested a Rs1.20 per unit increase for June’s adjustment. However, after reviewing the proposal, NEPRA approved a lower increase of Rs0.75 per unit. The latest adjustment follows another tariff hike announced for May, when electricity prices increased by Rs0.34 per unit under the same monthly adjustment mechanism. Monthly fuel cost adjustments allow authorities to revise electricity tariffs based on fluctuations in fuel prices and the cost of power generation. These revisions can either increase or reduce consumer bills depending on changes in generation expenses.

    Karachi watchman shot dead during suspected robber…

    Two people were killed in separate shooting incidents reported within an hour in different areas of Karachi on Thursday, prompting police to launch investigations into both cases. The first incident occurred in the Boat Basin police jurisdiction near Bath Island in Clifton, where a watchman was fatally shot outside a residential bungalow. Rescue officials shifted the victim’s body to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for legal formalities. According to Chhipa rescue officials, the deceased was identified as 40-year-old Mewa, who sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Initial information suggested that armed suspects opened fire after encountering resistance during an attempted robbery. However, Boat Basin Station House Officer (SHO) Riaz Niazi said the exact motive behind the killing had not yet been established. He confirmed that the victim originally belonged to the Thar region and was employed as a watchman at the bungalow where the incident occurred. The SHO said police were investigating all possible angles, including personal enmity and robbery, before reaching a final conclusion. Authorities are also attempting to obtain CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify the suspects and reconstruct the sequence of events. In a separate incident, another man was shot dead near Link Road on the National Highway in the Bin Qasim area. The victim was also taken to Jinnah Hospital for medico-legal procedures. Bin Qasim SHO Faisal Rafiq identified the deceased as 40-year-old Bashir, a truck driver originally from Dera Ismail Khan. According to preliminary findings, Bashir was present at a truck terminal when unidentified assailants, who were allegedly lying in wait, opened fire on him. Police said the victim suffered three bullet wounds, including one to the chest. Investigators recovered three spent 30-bore pistol casings from the crime scene, which have been collected as forensic evidence. Officials believe the second shooting may have been motivated by personal enmity, although they emphasised that the investigation remains ongoing and no suspects have been arrested so far. The two fatal incidents highlight the continuing security challenges in Karachi, where police regularly investigate cases involving violent crime, targeted attacks, and robbery-related shootings. Authorities have appealed to the public to cooperate with investigators and provide any information that may assist in identifying those responsible.

    Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) senior leader Dr Farooq Sattar has called for the creation of more provinces, saying Pakistan cannot be effectively governed through the existing four provinces or by the influence of a few political families. Speaking after arriving at the party’s Bahadurabad headquarters in Karachi, Sattar said the country needs a more inclusive and participatory federal structure with additional provinces to ensure balanced governance and fair representation. He said the movement for administrative reforms would continue until the establishment of more provinces across the country. According to Sattar, creating new provinces is essential for improving governance, strengthening the federation and addressing regional disparities. The MQM-P leader also praised the country’s leadership for demonstrating resilience during challenging times.
