Analysing Pakistan’s system collapse through Orwell’s 1984

Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, publicly conceded that the nation’s existing governance structure has collapsed. The minister admitted that the administrative machinery can no longer resolve the country’s compounding socio-economic crises. The phrase strategically slipped through while addressing the Pakistan Economic Summit in Islamabad. He warned that adhering to the status quo would drag the nation into the same stagnant cycle  ten years from now. Amidst, he called upon political parties to set aside differences, decentralize power, and establish new administrative units to avert total destabilization.

Yet, this public declaration does not occur in a vacuum. It arrives amidst mounting public resentment, economic desperation, and an escalating crackdown on political dissent, particularly in regions like Azad Jammu & Kashmir and urban political centers where mass protests against state austerity and police overreach have intensified. On the surface, the minister’s statement sounds like a candid plea for political reform and democratic unity. Beneath it, lies a far more insidious dynamic. One that mirrors the political theology of George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel, 1984.

Big Brother and the Permanent State

In Orwell’s 1984, the state of Oceania is governed by a dual reality. On the visible surface sits the Outer Party and its administrative ministries: the Ministry of Peace (which wages war), the Ministry of Plenty (which manages scarcity), and the Ministry of Truth (which manufactures lies). But behind these facade institutions resides the true, unquestionable entity: the Party itself, epitomized by the omnipotent figure of Big Brother. The purpose of the ministers, bureaucrats, and politicians is not to serve the citizenry, but to safeguard the survival of the core entity at all costs.

When applied to the political landscape of Pakistan, the Interior Minister’s declaration functions as a quintessential display of Orwellian doublethink. The ability to hold two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously and accept both of them. The visible civilians admit powerlessness, yet the hidden apparatus of establishment and the deep-state continues to wield absolute authority.

The state apparatus operates under an unwritten constitutional clause: individual rights, democratic mandates, and administrative cohesion may be sacrificed, so long as the core, permanent security apparatus remains untouched and supreme.

Echoes From 1971 to Kashmir

This pattern of preserving an unseen core entity while allowing civilian institutions to decay is not a novel phenomenon. Rather, it is the recurring motif of the region’s post-colonial history.

During the 1971 crisis in East Pakistan, the political leadership and the military high command operated under the illusion that they were protecting the sacred unity of the state. In reality, the democratic mandate of the majority population in Bengal was suppressed to protect the ideological and structural hegemony of the West Pakistani establishment—the ruling entity. The state prioritized the preservation of its central ruling elite over the actual people, ultimately leading to the violent birth of Bangladesh.

Similarly, in the context of Kashmir, both regional state apparatuses have historically treated the territory not as a community of citizens with self-determination, but as a hyper-militarized buffer zone. The rights of the local population are routinely suspended under emergency clauses, security regulations, and administrative crackdowns. Kashmir becomes a national security theater where the state justifies its authoritarian measures by pointing to a existential enemy, much like Oceania’s perpetual, shifting wars with Eurasia and Eastasia.

The System Has Collapsed

Minister Naqvi cautions that the system is broken and warns against civil unrest. The message carries an implicit subtext: the civilian government is simply the expendable skin of the state. The real state must be shielded from public wrath.

Public dissent erupts over inflation, human rights abuses, or rigged mandates. However, the state’s reaction is not to adapt to the popular will, but to enforce compliance through force. The plea for political parties to sit together is less about democratic reconciliation and more an invitation to absorb the blame for a crisis created by the underlying apparatus.

Ultimately, Orwell’s warning in 1984 was not merely about surveillance or censorship. Instead it was about the total erasure of individual agency in service of an unaccountable entity.  The region remains bound to protecting a shadowy establishment at the expense of its people.

    AI could replace millions of jobs, warns “Godfather of AI”

    Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is often said to have the potential to eliminate a large number of jobs. According to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, AI could affect almost every profession and may lead to shorter working hours. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates believes that, gradually, humans may become unnecessary for many tasks. Elon Musk has predicted that within the next two decades, most people may no longer need to go to work. Computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton is widely known as the “Godfather of AI.” He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2024 for his work on artificial intelligence. Geoffrey Hinton who is associated with the University of Toronto in Canada has warned about the potential negative impact of AI on employment. Speaking at Georgetown University, he said he believes AI could lead to widespread unemployment with millions of people potentially losing their jobs. He explained that companies are investing heavily in AI infrastructure including data centers and chips to improve automation. According to Hinton, companies will seek returns on these investments by selling AI systems capable of performing tasks currently carried out by human workers at a lower cost. He said that the desire for greater profits could ultimately lead AI tools to replace human employees. However, Hinton acknowledged that AI technology would also create new employment opportunities. Nevertheless, he believes the number of new jobs may not be sufficient to replace all the jobs that could be lost. He also admitted that it is extremely difficult to predict the long-term effects of AI technology. Hinton has previously issued warnings about the risks associated with AI. At one point, he estimated that there was a 10% to 20% chance that AI could eventually contribute to the destruction of humanity. He stressed that it is important to discuss the potential dangers of AI. Hinton acknowledged that the uncertainty surrounding AI can be troubling because no one knows exactly what the future holds. He said that if someone asks what AI technology will look like in the next 10 years, no one can accurately predict it. Earlier, in an August 2025 podcast appearance, Hinton said that AI is learning things in ways that humans do not fully understand and that there may be no reliable way to simply switch it off. Hinton’s research helped lay the foundations of machine learning, the technology that enables computers to replicate aspects of human intelligence. However, in recent years, he has been campaigning for AI to be developed and used safely. In 2023, Hinton left his position at Google saying that bad actors could potentially use the technology to harm other people. In a recent interview, when asked about the pace of AI development, he said that most experts in the field currently believe that eventually possibly within the next 20 years, humans could develop AI systems that are more intelligent than humans. He described this as a frightening prospect, comparing current AI technology to a three-year-old child, while noting that children grow up very quickly. According to Hinton, the impact of AI on the world could be similar to that of the Industrial Revolution. He explained that the Industrial Revolution effectively halted the need for humans to develop greater physical strength because people began relying on increasingly powerful machines. He believes humanity is now doing something similar with human intelligence potentially creating technology that could surpass human intellectual capabilities. When asked what life might look like 10 or 20 years from now, Hinton said that it would largely depend on how political systems respond to and manage the technology. In his view, AI could have remarkable benefits in the medical field and could improve the efficiency of almost every industry. However, he stressed that society needs to be much more cautious about the rapid development of AI technology.

    Bangkok’s original name has 168 characters

    Did you know that the city with the world’s longest official name is also one of the most famous cities on Earth? Interestingly, the name by which most people know this city is not its official name. The city is Bangkok, the capital of Thailand whose full ceremonial name consists of 168 characters. If you ever visit Thailand, you are unlikely to hear local residents recite the full name as even many of them cannot remember it. The city’s full ceremonial name is Krungthepmahanakhonamonrattanakosinmahintharaayuthayamahadilokphopnoppharatratchathaniburiromudomratchaniwetmahasathanamonpimanawatansathitsakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit. Bangkok’s official ceremonial name is recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest place name in the world. If you find it impossible to remember, you’re certainly not alone. The city also has a shorter official name in Thai: Krung Thep Maha Nakhon which is commonly shortened further by locals to simply Krung Thep. In 2022, the Thai government announced that both Krung Thep Maha Nakhon and Bangkok would be accepted as official Romanized names for the capital. The 168-character ceremonial name is derived from Sanskrit and Pali and its shorter form roughly translates to “The Great City of Angels.” However, historians are still uncertain why such an extraordinarily long ceremonial name was originally adopted. How did name “Bangkok” come about? According to popular accounts, the name Bangkok predates the establishment of the city as Thailand’s capital. It is believed to have originated from the area’s former village or district name possibly derived from the Thai words “Bang” (a village or riverside settlement) and “Makok” referring to a type of wild plum or olive tree that once grew abundantly in the area. Over time, the name Bang Makok is thought to have evolved into Bangkok, the name by which the city became known internationally.

  • How many squares can you spot?

    Most people enjoy solving puzzles but picture puzzles can be even more fun and challenging. Look carefully at the image and try to count how many squares are hidden in it. At first the puzzle may look simple but it can be surprisingly difficult even for people who are good at solving puzzles. To find the correct answer you need to pay close attention to every part of the picture. A little knowledge of geometry can also help. Remember a square is a shape with four equal sides. There are many small and large squares hidden in the image so counting them all is not as easy as it looks.  You may need to check the picture from left to right and then from top to bottom. If you are still confused don’t worry you are not alone.  The puzzle is designed to make you think carefully. After counting all the squares the total comes to 40. So, the answer is 40 squares.

  • Why popcorn explodes when heated

    Popcorn is a favorite snack for people of all ages, especially during movie nights. But have you ever wondered why only certain corn kernels pop while regular corn does not? Food experts say the answer lies in the kernel’s unique structure moisture and the way it reacts to heat. Not all corn can turn into popcorn. A special type of corn called Zea mays everta is used because its kernels have a hard outer shell and a soft starchy center with a small amount of water inside. Although popcorn kernels look dry they contain about 13–15% moisture. When heated, the water inside turns into steam. Since the outer shell is very strong the steam cannot escape causing pressure to build inside the kernel. As the pressure keeps increasing the kernel acts like a tiny pressure cooker. Eventually the shell bursts with a popping sound.  The hot steam quickly escapes and the soft starch inside expands. Within seconds it cools and forms the fluffy crispy popcorn we enjoy.  A popped kernel can become 30 to 40 times larger than its original size. Sometimes a few kernels do not pop. Experts say this usually happens because they do not contain enough moisture to create the pressure needed to burst. Tiny cracks in the outer shell can also let steam escape too early preventing the kernel from popping.  Heating the kernels at a temperature that is too low may also cause them to dry out before enough pressure builds up. Popcorn can be made in several ways including on the stove in an air popper or in a microwave. Microwave popcorn bags and the oil inside them help spread heat evenly while oil on the stove helps heat the kernels more consistently. Air poppers on the other hand use only hot air and do not require oil. According to food scientists the secret behind perfect popcorn is the combination of a strong outer shell the right amount of moisture steam pressure and the natural expansion of starch when heated.

  • From notebook to newsroom: what ethical journalism looks like in an AI-powered world

    By Nabiha Khalid A specific sort of discomfort falls over a newsroom when the instruments of the profession begin to surpass the ethical standards intended to regulate them. Artificial intelligence is now capable of creating text, images, and videos that are indistinguishable from genuine human creations, and the consequences of this change are far from straightforward. When a false quote can be convincingly linked to a public figure, or when a deepfake video can spread more swiftly than any correction can be issued, the very core of journalistic integrity the assumption that reported facts reflect what has truly happened faces significant pressure. This is not an imagined crisis; it is the current reality in modern media. I attened a workshop under the project titled “Digital Trust and Free Expression in the AI Era” at the Department of Media and Development Communication, University of the Punjab, supported by the U.S. Mission to Pakistan in partnership with the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN) last week and we discuused in the wrodkshop that what ethical journalism requires in today’s context cannot depend solely on instinct. Verification must be a systematic process rather than something that happens by chance, involving a discipline of cross-checking, sourcing from multiple angles, and being technically adept at identifying manipulated media. Fact-checking, which used to be a background activity conducted before publication, must now be approached as a clear, continual practice that news consumers can observe and rely on. The difference between accurate reporting and unintentionally spreading misinformation often hinges on this one consistent habit of verification, applied uniformly rather than selectively. It is equally important to emphasize responsible digital storytelling, understanding that journalists do not just deliver information but are guardians of public knowledge. In an information landscape dominated by AI, the journalist’s role evolves slightly: from being the first to break news to becoming the most trustworthy source to verify it. This shift does not imply a lesser role; rather, it could very well be the most crucial aspect of journalism in the coming years. It is important to place this change in a broader historical context. Journalism has endured disruptive technologies in the past the telegraph shortened distances, the around-the-clock news cycle diminished patience, and social media altered the role of gatekeeping, enabling anyone with a smartphone to share information. Each disruption brought about its own ethical challenges, and each time, the industry persisted not by opposing the technology but by creating new standards to regulate it. Artificial intelligence is the newest and possibly the most significant example of this trend. What sets it apart from previous disruptions is the remarkable realism of synthetic content: earlier types of misinformation needed some level of narrative development, whereas AI can now generate the very evidence needed an image, a voice, a document ,Journalism has long relied on certain standards as evidence. This brings up a difficult yet essential question: can the technologies that jeopardize trust in journalism also aid in its restoration? The answer, with caution, is affirmative. News organizations are increasingly utilizing AI-assisted verification tools, reverse-image analysis, and metadata forensics to combat the misuse of these very technologies. This dual nature of AI serving both as a threat and a tool indicates that ethical journalism today necessitates a level of technical knowledge that was not mandatory a decade ago but has now become crucial. A journalist who lacks training in identifying the distinctive markers of synthetic media is, in a significant way, not adequately equipped for the current landscape. Additionally, there is a less obvious yet significant challenge to address: the imbalance between the rapid production of AI-generated content and the measured approach of ethical journalism. News organizations facing pressure to publish swiftly areparticularly prone to this disparity, making it essential that rigorous editorial standards, rather than advanced technological capabilities, serve as the key protection.No matter how advanced a detection tool may be, it cannot take the place of an organizational culture which places a priority on accuracy rather than on immediacy. The responsibility for digital trust does not fall solely on journalists. Public media literacy the ability to critically assess a viral image, to look for a second source before sharing, and to identify the emotional manipulation often present in synthetic content serves as a crucial second line of defense. In this regard, ethical journalism and an informed audience are interdependent: one cannot completely substitute for the lack of the other. The diligence of a newsroom holds little value if its audience hasn’t been prepared to recognize and demand that diligence in the first place. So, in an age when artificial intelligence is involved, ethical journalism does not call for rejecting technology; rather it involves basing the use of technology on firm principles of verification, transparency, and accountability. The future of the newsroom won’t be determined by how fast it publishes, but by the care with which it confirms the facts, and perhaps that is the most human safeguard we still have.   • Study links fructose to Cancer spread

    A new scientific study has found that fructose a simple type of sugar may help cancer cells that survive chemotherapy send signals that encourage the disease to spread. Researchers at the Wistar Institute in the United States explained that some cancer cells are not completely destroyed by chemotherapy. These surviving cells stop dividing but remain active. They continue to send chemical signals to nearby cancer cells which may influence how the disease behaves. The study published in the journal Nature Aging suggests that fructose could be one of the substances involved in this signaling process. According to the researchers it may help surviving cancer cells stay active and communicate with other cancer cells. Co-author Aidan Cole said this is one of the first studies to show that a nutrient found in food such as fructose may act as a signaling molecule between cancer cells. Experts say the findings could improve understanding of how cancer returns or spreads after chemotherapy and may help guide future treatments. However they stressed that more research is needed. The study does not prove that eating fructose directly causes cancer to grow or spread.
