Why popcorn explodes when heated

Popcorn is a favorite snack for people of all ages, especially during movie nights. But have you ever wondered why only certain corn kernels pop while regular corn does not?

Food experts say the answer lies in the kernel’s unique structure moisture and the way it reacts to heat.

Not all corn can turn into popcorn. A special type of corn called Zea mays everta is used because its kernels have a hard outer shell and a soft starchy center with a small amount of water inside.

Although popcorn kernels look dry they contain about 13–15% moisture. When heated, the water inside turns into steam.

Since the outer shell is very strong the steam cannot escape causing pressure to build inside the kernel.

As the pressure keeps increasing the kernel acts like a tiny pressure cooker. Eventually the shell bursts with a popping sound.  The hot steam quickly escapes and the soft starch inside expands. Within seconds it cools and forms the fluffy crispy popcorn we enjoy.  A popped kernel can become 30 to 40 times larger than its original size.

Sometimes a few kernels do not pop. Experts say this usually happens because they do not contain enough moisture to create the pressure needed to burst.

Tiny cracks in the outer shell can also let steam escape too early preventing the kernel from popping.  Heating the kernels at a temperature that is too low may also cause them to dry out before enough pressure builds up.

Popcorn can be made in several ways including on the stove in an air popper or in a microwave.

Microwave popcorn bags and the oil inside them help spread heat evenly while oil on the stove helps heat the kernels more consistently.

Air poppers on the other hand use only hot air and do not require oil. According to food scientists the secret behind perfect popcorn is the combination of a strong outer shell the right amount of moisture steam pressure and the natural expansion of starch when heated.

This technology allows up to 10 passengers to pass through border control simultaneously. Passengers walking through the red-carpeted Terminal 3 no longer need to show travel documents or stop for manual checks. They only need to complete registration before arriving at Dubai Airport so that their passport details and facial images can be identified. The system completes passenger clearance in just 3.4 seconds. According to Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths, the airport has invested in camera technology allowing passengers to enter or leave the country without carrying a passport, passing through gate readers or facing difficulties during the process. He further stated that the new technology is currently being tested on first-class passengers and will gradually be made available to all passengers.

Another possible risk is dermatitis a skin condition that causes irritation and inflammation. It may lead to redness itching, swelling, dry skin, rashes blisters and in severe cases painful sores. They recommend seeking advice from a qualified skin specialist instead of relying on products that promise quick results. Protecting your skin and following professional medical advice is a safer and healthier choice.

Scientists were able to study the star in greater detail after the surrounding cloud of dust became less dense, revealing new information about the unusual explosion taking place around it. Researchers from the University of Warwick confirmed that V445 Puppis is the only known helium nova of its kind in the Milky Way. The system consists of a white dwarf star that is collecting helium fuel from a rare companion star, eventually triggering an extraordinary stellar eruption. Unlike typical stellar explosions, this event involves the release of helium-rich material, creating powerful and unusual gas streams that have surprised researchers. The exact nature of these mysterious “bullets” and the process responsible for producing them are still not fully understood. Scientists believe that studying this rare phenomenon could provide valuable insights into how unusual stellar explosions occur and how stars evolve under extreme conditions.     In the Carpathian Mountains of central Slovakia lies Vlkolínec, a preserved settlement. This village is renowned for its pastel-painted timber cottages and traditional 19th-century folk architecture. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993. Vlkolínec was celebrated not merely as a set of historical buildings, but as a living community. A rare surviving traditional rural life in Central Europe. However, three decades after receiving this prestigious designation, the small mountain is struggling with an existential dilemma. What was meant to be a cultural preservation has transformed into a challenge for the few villagers who still call Vlkolínec home. Now, frustration among permanent residents has reached a boiling point. There are calls to have the village removed from the UNESCO list altogether. When UNESCO designated Vlkolínec as a World Heritage site, one of the criteria was that it remained an inhabited settlement. At the time of inscription, the village was home to around 200 residents. Today, that permanent population has declined to just 14 to 17 people spread across four core families. In contrast to this dwindling resident count, Vlkolínec receives approximately 100,000 tourists every year. For the remaining inhabitants, the ratio of over 7,000 visitors per resident has basically altered the daily life. Locals report feeling as though they live inside a tourist zoo. The boundaries between public spaces and private homes are routinely ignored. Despite signs requesting privacy, visitors frequently wander into private yards, peer through kitchen windows, and treat active properties as open-access museum displays. The loss of privacy is compounded by anti-social tourist behavior. This conduct has been leaving locals feeling alienated in their own hometown. Overtourism is only one side of the coin. Residents also voice deep frustration over the rigid conservation framework that accompanies World Heritage status. Under national protection laws and strict UNESCO guidelines, historic homes face tight restrictions on modern modifications and physical alterations. Elderly villagers point out that these preservation rules have made customary rural activities increasingly difficult. Small-scale farming, livestock keeping, and land cultivation have gradually vanished. Surrounding agricultural terraces have become overgrown. Traditional meadow mowing has largely ceased as older generations pass away and younger generations move away. Furthermore, many of the village’s timber cottages have been bought up by outside buyers to serve as weekend holiday retreats. This phenomenon has increased the loss of a permanent, cohesive community. Some residents argue that revoking UNESCO status would reduce tourist pressure and ease regulatory burdens. However, municipal officials and heritage experts contend that delisting is neither practical nor the right solution. Local administrators in the nearby town of Ružomberok emphasize that UNESCO status brings significant heritage recognition and funding opportunities. Rather than abandoning the title, officials advocate for smarter tourism management. From a procedural standpoint, voluntary delisting at the request of a local community is virtually unprecedented in UNESCO’s history. The organization typically removes properties only when they lose their outstanding universal value due to severe destruction or irreversible development. The debate unfolding in Vlkolínec highlights a broader issue facing protected historic sites around the globe. How to balance global recognition and economic benefits with the rights and wellbeing of local inhabitants! Small historic communities across Europe and beyond battle with overcrowding and demographic decline. Vlkolínec serves as a reminder that preserving physical architecture alone is not enough. Without protecting the living social fabric of a community, world heritage sites risk turning into empty shells of their former selves.  

  • Short intense exercise may benefit your body

    A new study suggests that you may not need to spend hours exercising every day to support your health.  Even a few minutes of very intense physical activity can cause important changes inside the body. Researchers found that intense exercise can quickly change hundreds of proteins in the blood These proteins are linked to heart health metabolism body fat and other important body functions. What did the study find? The researchers compared short high-intensity cycling with cycling at a normal pace.  Participants completed several 30-second bursts of very fast cycling with about four minutes of rest between each burst. After the intense exercise changes were found in 714 blood proteins. In comparison only 7 proteins showed similar changes after normal paced cycling. This suggests that exercise intensity can strongly affect how the body responds. What happens during intense exercise? During hard exercise the body produces different chemical signals.  One of them is called Lac-Phe, which has been linked to appetite energy use and other body processes. These signals may also affect metabolism and how fat cells work. Some of the protein changes seen in the study were connected to processes related to heart disease type 2 diabetes and obesity. Researchers also examined data from more than 53,000 people. Some of the proteins affected by intense exercise were linked to healthy aging heart health and the risk of metabolic diseases. Is a few minutes of exercise enough? The findings do not mean that three minutes of intense exercise can completely replace a longer workout.  Different types of exercise provide different benefits. Longer moderate exercise can still be important for improving endurance muscle strength and heart and lung health. However the study shows that even short periods of intense activity may have meaningful effects on the body. For people with busy schedules adding brief bursts of physical activity to their daily routine could be a practical option. However high intensity exercise is not suitable for everyone. People who have not exercised for a long time or have a medical condition should speak with a healthcare professional before starting intense workouts.

  • Study links fructose to Cancer spread

    A new scientific study has found that fructose a simple type of sugar may help cancer cells that survive chemotherapy send signals that encourage the disease to spread. Researchers at the Wistar Institute in the United States explained that some cancer cells are not completely destroyed by chemotherapy. These surviving cells stop dividing but remain active. They continue to send chemical signals to nearby cancer cells which may influence how the disease behaves. The study published in the journal Nature Aging suggests that fructose could be one of the substances involved in this signaling process. According to the researchers it may help surviving cancer cells stay active and communicate with other cancer cells. Co-author Aidan Cole said this is one of the first studies to show that a nutrient found in food such as fructose may act as a signaling molecule between cancer cells. Experts say the findings could improve understanding of how cancer returns or spreads after chemotherapy and may help guide future treatments. However they stressed that more research is needed. The study does not prove that eating fructose directly causes cancer to grow or spread.
