China voices concern over new US trade curbs

BEIJING: China has raised strong concerns over the latest US trade restrictions, urging Washington to strengthen dialogue and maintain stable economic relations as both countries continue efforts to manage trade tensions.

Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng expressed Beijing’s concerns during a video conference with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, according to Chinese state media.

During the talks, both sides held detailed discussions on implementing the agreements reached by the leaders of the two countries. The officials also exchanged views on maintaining stable economic and trade ties, expanding practical cooperation and addressing each other’s concerns through continued engagement.

Beijing criticized the latest US trade measures, including the recently announced 12.5% tariff on Chinese imports, describing them as a source of concern for bilateral economic relations.

Despite the differences, both sides agreed to continue using the China-US economic and trade consultation mechanism to improve communication, strengthen mutual trust and reduce misunderstandings. They also pledged to expand cooperation and support the stable development of bilateral trade relations.

The discussions come ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s expected visit to the United States later this year, a meeting widely seen as an opportunity to ease tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

Earlier agreements between Beijing and Washington included China’s commitment to address US concerns over the supply of rare earth minerals and related processing technologies. China also agreed to increase purchases of US agricultural products through 2028 as part of broader efforts to stabilize trade relations.

The latest talks indicate that while differences remain over tariffs and trade policies, both governments continue to pursue diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation in economic disputes.

Iran says Pakistan ties gaining greater importance

TEHRAN: Iran has described its relationship with Pakistan as increasingly important, saying Islamabad has played a significant role as a mediator since the outbreak of the regional conflict. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the two neighbouring countries were maintaining close diplomatic contacts. He also confirmed that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf had been invited to visit Islamabad. Baghaei said the two officials would travel to Pakistan at a suitable time. He did not announce a specific date for the visit. He described reciprocal visits between the two countries as a natural part of their growing bilateral relationship. The Iranian official also played down concerns that the recently signed defence agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye was aimed at Tehran. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement on August 7. The agreement seeks to strengthen collective defence cooperation and provides for a joint response if any member comes under attack. Baghaei said Tehran did not consider the agreement a direct threat to Iran. He said regional countries were increasingly seeking security arrangements based on their own regional realities rather than relying entirely on external powers. He maintained that regional cooperation could contribute to stability if such arrangements remained inclusive and focused on preventing conflict. Baghaei also said Iran was not prepared to resume direct negotiations with the United States while Tehran believed Washington was violating an interim agreement. The Iranian government has also linked the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to a number of demands. These include compensation for damage caused during the conflict and an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports. Meanwhile, Iran and Oman are continuing discussions on arrangements for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Baghaei said the talks were progressing in a constructive manner. He said the two sides had reached an understanding on a proposed map for shipping traffic and were working on several technical details. According to the Iranian official, the proposed arrangement would establish mechanisms for safer maritime movement. It would also address environmental protection and maritime crimes. He stressed that the discussions with Oman were focused on ensuring safe international shipping and were separate from broader political disputes. Baghaei nevertheless reiterated that Tehran would not allow the full reopening of the strategic waterway unless its conditions concerning Washington were addressed. In a separate development, Iran has appointed former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Mohsen Rezaei to a senior position in the Supreme National Security Council. Rezaei has replaced Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr as secretary of the body responsible for coordinating Iran’s security and foreign policy. No official reason was immediately given for the change. It also remains unclear whether the appointment will lead to any major shift in Iran’s security policy. Rezaei, 71, commanded the Revolutionary Guards from 1981 to 1997. He later served for more than two decades as secretary of Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council and also held the position of vice president for economic affairs. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council brings together senior military, intelligence and government officials. It is formally chaired by the president, while the supreme leader retains ultimate authority over major state matters. A separate decree appointed Rezaei as the supreme leader’s representative on the council. Zolqadr was instead named as a political adviser. The developments come as Iran faces heightened regional tensions and continues efforts to manage its relations with neighbouring countries and major international powers.

Lt Gen (R) Abdul Qayyum calls for global peace through dialogue; FIRD Chairman Toaha Qureshi backs strong armed forces

LONDON:  Senator Lt Gen (R) Abdul Qayyum (HI(M)), President of the Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Society, called for greater respect for international law, dialogue under the umbrella of the United Nations and enhanced cooperation among Muslim countries to address global security challenges, while Forum for International Relations Development (FIRD) Chairman Toaha Qureshi reaffirmed support for Pakistan’s armed forces, saying they remained the country’s defenders and that the Field Marshal had enhanced Pakistan’s reputation on the global stage. Addressing the Second International Conference on Global Peace, organised by FIRD in London, Senator Abdul Qayyum said lasting peace could only be achieved through diplomacy and adherence to international law. “Respect for international law and pursuing dialogue as a strategy for peace under the umbrella of the United Nations can help resolve even the most complex global challenges. Destructive wars can only lead to catastrophic consequences and bring suffering to humanity as a whole,” he said. During his address, the senator argued that the post-Cold War unipolar world had witnessed repeated violations of international law and human rights, weakening the effectiveness of institutions such as the United Nations and the International Court of Justice. Discussing global security, he said colonialism had evolved into neo-colonialism in the modern era and referred to the establishment of US military bases around the world. He also cited recent developments in the Middle East, saying they had highlighted the importance of national self-reliance in defence and strategic planning. Senator Abdul Qayyum said vulnerable states increasingly needed to strengthen their own defence capabilities while developing strategic partnerships through mutual defence agreements. Referring to recent tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States, he said the evolving regional security environment had prompted Gulf countries to reassess their strategic priorities and seek greater autonomy. He said Pakistan, with its strategic geographical location and strong defence capability, could play a constructive role in promoting closer cooperation among Muslim-majority countries. He added that greater unity among Muslim states, beyond sectarian divisions, could strengthen regional stability and collective security. The senator warned that unilateral actions and disregard for international law risked pushing the world towards another major global conflict. Referring to former US President Richard Nixon’s geopolitical doctrine, he said pragmatic diplomacy, a balance of power and economic stability remained essential foundations for international peace. Addressing interfaith harmony, Senator Abdul Qayyum said dialogue and mutual respect remained essential to strengthening relations between different faith communities. He expressed concern over the rise of Islamophobia and called for greater engagement, education and cooperation to counter prejudice and promote peaceful coexistence. Speaking at the conference, FIRD Chairman Toaha Qureshi said Pakistan’s armed forces were the guardians of the country’s sovereignty and deserved the nation’s continued support. “Pakistan’s armed forces are the protectors of the country. We need strong armed forces, and it is necessary that we continue to support this institution,” he said. Qureshi added that Pakistan’s Field Marshal had earned the country greater international recognition and enhanced its standing through his leadership. The conference also heard from educationist and businessman Mian Muhammad Jehangir, who stressed the importance of meaningful education in shaping future generations and driving national development. He said Pakistan’s youth possessed immense talent and potential, adding that investment in quality education, skills development and character-building was essential for the country’s progress. He praised the achievements, resilience and capabilities of Pakistan’s young people, expressing confidence that they would play a pivotal role in building a stronger, more prosperous and globally competitive nation.

PAAM finalizes policy draft for independent altern…

Lahore: An important consultative meeting of the Core Committee of the Pakistan Association of Alternative Medicine (PAAM) was held, in which the “Policy Draft and Working Paper” was finalized to make the country’s alternative medicine sector namely Homeopathy, Herbal, and Unani economically self-reliant and to transform it into an international industry. During this meeting, PAAM Core Committee members Dr. Tariq Mahmood Chaudhry and former Director of Homeopathy at the Punjab Health Department, Dr. Jamil Akhtar Ghauri, met with PAAM President Kashif Aslam Malik and held deep consultations on the framework of the proposed federal ministry. According to the text of the policy draft, more than 80 percent of the world’s population relies on alternative and natural methods of treatment. China earns an annual export profit of 60 billion dollars from this sector, and India earns over 5 billion dollars in valuable foreign exchange. In contrast, despite having abundant natural resources and hundreds of thousands of qualified doctors, Pakistan accounts for less than 0.5 percent of the global market due to the lack of an independent federal ministry. The working paper prepared by PAAM highlights that establishing an autonomous federal ministry could be the fastest way to pull Pakistan out of its economic crisis and boost exports. The PAAM leadership has presented three-year economic targets to the government and parliament, setting the export target at 200 million dollars for the first year, 500 million dollars for the second year, and aiming to exceed 1.5 billion dollars in the third year through international trade agreements and Business-to-Business (B2B) partnerships. Another key feature of this policy draft is that commercial herb farming will be initiated nationwide under the new ministry, directly benefiting the rural economy and local farmers. Furthermore, this initiative aims to eliminate Pakistan’s reliance on expensive imported raw materials for the allopathic industry, making the country truly economically independent. During the meeting, the PAAM leadership emphasized that the alternative medicine sector is facing a severe crisis due to the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan’s (DRAP) hyper-focus on allopathic brands and bureaucratic red tape. They noted that introducing a one-window operation under an autonomous ministry would ensure medicine quality complies with World Health Organization (WHO) and International Herb Pharmacopeia standards, while also reducing public healthcare expenditures at the government level by up to 50 percent through the provision of affordable alternative medicines. Following the completion of the policy draft, PAAM has demanded a joint emergency meeting of the Senate and National Assembly Standing Committees on Health and Commerce, the formation of a dedicated task force, and a special export package for alternative medicine manufacturers. The Chairman and Core Committee of PAAM reaffirmed their commitment to presenting this policy paper to the Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Federal Cabinet very soon to make the country self-sufficient on both economic and medical fronts.
