China voices concern over new US trade curbs

BEIJING: China has raised strong concerns over the latest US trade restrictions, urging Washington to strengthen dialogue and maintain stable economic relations as both countries continue efforts to manage trade tensions.

Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng expressed Beijing’s concerns during a video conference with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, according to Chinese state media.

During the talks, both sides held detailed discussions on implementing the agreements reached by the leaders of the two countries. The officials also exchanged views on maintaining stable economic and trade ties, expanding practical cooperation and addressing each other’s concerns through continued engagement.

Beijing criticized the latest US trade measures, including the recently announced 12.5% tariff on Chinese imports, describing them as a source of concern for bilateral economic relations.

Despite the differences, both sides agreed to continue using the China-US economic and trade consultation mechanism to improve communication, strengthen mutual trust and reduce misunderstandings. They also pledged to expand cooperation and support the stable development of bilateral trade relations.

The discussions come ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s expected visit to the United States later this year, a meeting widely seen as an opportunity to ease tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

Earlier agreements between Beijing and Washington included China’s commitment to address US concerns over the supply of rare earth minerals and related processing technologies. China also agreed to increase purchases of US agricultural products through 2028 as part of broader efforts to stabilize trade relations.

The latest talks indicate that while differences remain over tariffs and trade policies, both governments continue to pursue diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation in economic disputes.

‘Rigging mastermind cries foul’: Maryam’s sh…

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has strongly criticised the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) over its allegations of rigging in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. Maryam responded to criticism from PPP leaders in a social media post on Wednesday. She accused the PPP of being behind what she described as “subtle rigging” and questioned its decision to complain about electoral irregularities. “The mastermind of subtle rigging is crying foul over rigging,” Maryam said in her post. She then added a sarcastic question about when doomsday would arrive. Her remarks came after PPP Central Punjab General Secretary Hassan Murtaza accused the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of manipulating the AJK election process. Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Murtaza alleged that electoral rules had been repeatedly violated during the polls. He also criticised the role of the Election Commission. He claimed that the commission had acted like an election agent instead of performing its constitutional responsibilities. Murtaza accused the PML-N of setting a new example of electoral rigging. He said his party had been treated unfairly during the elections. The PPP leader also criticised the political activities of the PML-N leadership in AJK. Without directly naming Maryam Nawaz, Murtaza referred to her father, Nawaz Sharif. He said Sharif had gone to Kashmir and expressed a desire to become prime minister. Murtaza argued that if the PML-N leadership was now seeking the AJK premiership, it was only possible because of the PPP’s political role. He also defended Nawaz Sharif and said the PPP respected the former prime minister. Murtaza claimed that the PML-N had itself reduced Sharif’s political standing by offering him a position as chairman of an institution in Lahore while he was seeking the AJK premiership. The PPP leader then shifted his criticism to Punjab’s governance and public services. He claimed that thousands of acres of farmland between Shahdara and Muridke had been inundated. According to Murtaza, water had reached several feet in some agricultural areas. He said the damage was not caused by a major flood. Instead, he blamed a breach in a drain embankment. Murtaza also criticised the Punjab government’s claims about Lahore’s development. He argued that the city’s infrastructure remained vulnerable to heavy rainfall. He said several roads turned into what he described as drainage channels after only a few hours of rain. The PPP leader blamed government decisions for creating difficulties for citizens. He also criticised the import of one million metric tonnes of wheat. Murtaza claimed that the imported wheat was worth around Rs1 trillion. He questioned the government’s economic decisions and argued that citizens deserved better public services. He said taxes collected from the public should be used to provide essential facilities. He also called on the government to fulfil its responsibility toward citizens. The political dispute comes amid growing tensions between the PPP and PML-N over the AJK elections. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has also alleged irregularities in the first phase of the AJK elections. The PML-N, however, has rejected allegations of rigging and defended the election results. Maryam Nawaz has previously urged political opponents to accept defeat rather than make allegations of electoral manipulation

A major inter-provincial drug smuggling attempt was foiled in Karachi after a joint operation by a federal civil intelligence agency and Mochko Police resulted in the seizure of 66 kilograms of hashish and the arrest of two suspects. According to District Keamari Police, authorities received intelligence indicating that a large quantity of narcotics was being transported from Balochistan to Karachi. Acting on the tip-off, law enforcement officials established a checkpoint on Hub River Road to intercept the suspected vehicle. During the operation, officers signaled a Toyota Land Cruiser to stop. Instead of complying, the occupants attempted to flee at high speed by diverting onto an unpaved road. However, the vehicle lost control and overturned, allowing police to quickly move in and apprehend the suspects. The arrested individuals were identified as Faisal and Abdul Wali. A thorough search of the overturned vehicle led to the recovery of 66 kilograms of hashish, which had been concealed in multiple packages inside the Land Cruiser. The vehicle was also taken into police custody as part of the investigation. Police officials stated that the narcotics were allegedly being smuggled from Balochistan into Karachi as part of an inter-provincial trafficking operation. Investigators believe the suspects may be linked to a larger drug trafficking network operating across provincial borders. A case has been registered against the accused under the relevant anti-narcotics laws. Authorities have launched further investigations to identify other members of the network, determine the intended destination of the seized drugs, and uncover the full scope of the smuggling operation. Law enforcement agencies described the operation as a significant success in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking. Officials reiterated their commitment to carrying out intelligence-based operations to dismantle narcotics networks and strengthen public safety across Karachi and other parts of Pakistan. The successful seizure highlights the growing coordination between intelligence agencies and local police in combating organized crime. Authorities have urged the public to continue reporting suspicious activities, emphasizing that community cooperation remains essential in preventing drug trafficking and maintaining law and order.

Iran says US violated Islamabad MoU

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has accused the United States of violating the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, saying the agreement called for an end to the war, rather than a 60-day ceasefire that would require an extension. In an interview with ISNA, Araghchi said the memorandum declared an end to hostilities and blamed Washington for the subsequent resumption of fighting. He clarified that the 60-day period mentioned in the agreement referred to negotiations aimed at reaching a final settlement, not a temporary ceasefire. Araghchi said Qatar and Pakistan, which acted as mediators, continue to exchange messages with Tehran and remain in contact with Iranian officials. However, he stressed that Iran has not yet decided to resume negotiations with Washington. On the Strait of Hormuz, Araghchi said Iran and Oman were continuing discussions on its management. He described the issue as separate from the Islamabad MoU and said Iran was working on a temporary route that could eventually become permanent. Meanwhile, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi rejected US President Donald Trump’s claims about the Strait of Hormuz. Writing on X, Gharibabadi said Iran would not surrender control of the strategic waterway because of threats, military displays or political statements. He stressed that Iran does not fear US pressure and retains authority over the Strait.
