Abdullah Shafique exits GSL to join Pakistan Test team

Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique has been released by Lahore Qalandars from the ongoing Global Super League (GSL) to join the national Test squad ahead of the team’s first Test assignment against the West Indies.

The right-handed batter was originally part of Lahore Qalandars’ squad for the GSL campaign in Guyana. However, the franchise has confirmed his departure after his final appearance in the tournament, allowing him to link up with Pakistan’s Test squad in Trinidad and Tobago.

To fill the vacancy left by Shafique, Lahore Qalandars have signed Bangladesh batter Shamim Hossain for the remainder of the Global Super League. The left-handed all-rounder is expected to strengthen the team’s middle order as the tournament enters its crucial stages.

Shafique featured in Lahore Qalandars’ last match against the Guyana Amazon Warriors before leaving the competition. In that fixture, he played a quick cameo, scoring 21 runs off just 13 deliveries. His aggressive knock provided valuable momentum during the innings before he departed to fulfill his national team commitments.

Following the conclusion of his GSL duties, Shafique is set to travel to Trinidad and Tobago, where Pakistan’s Test squad is currently preparing for its upcoming red-ball challenge against the West Indies.

The 25-year-old has been drafted into the Test squad as a replacement for the injured Abdullah Fazal, who has been ruled out due to injury. His inclusion adds experience to Pakistan’s batting lineup, particularly at the top of the order, where he has previously delivered several important performances in Test cricket.

Shafique has established himself as one of Pakistan’s dependable red-ball batters since making his Test debut. Known for his solid technique and temperament, he has played key innings in overseas conditions and remains an important part of Pakistan’s long-term plans in the format.

His return to the national setup comes at an important time as Pakistan prepare for a challenging Test series in the Caribbean. The team management will hope his recent competitive cricket in the Global Super League helps him make a smooth transition into the Test environment.

Meanwhile, Lahore Qalandars will continue their GSL campaign with Shamim Hossain replacing Shafique in the squad. The franchise will be aiming to maintain its momentum as it competes for a place in the knockout stage of the tournament.

The Global Super League has featured several international stars this season, providing players with valuable match practice before returning to national duties. Shafique’s early exit from the competition highlights the priority given to international commitments, with Pakistan keen to have a full-strength squad available for the upcoming Test series against the West Indies.

His move from franchise cricket back to international cricket marks another important step as Pakistan look to build a strong lineup for the remainder of their Test campaign.

Cross border strikes kill at least fourteen as Ukr…

At least seven people died in Russia following what officials described as Ukraine’s largest scale attack of the year, while separate Russian strikes on Ukraine killed at least seven more people and injured over 39 others. Ukraine launched roughly 822 drones in the assault, with 600 of them targeting Moscow, according to the region’s governor, who called it one of the most massive drone attacks the Russian capital has faced in recent memory. The strikes hit a warehouse belonging to online retailer Wildberries among other targets. In Russia’s southwestern Rostov region, five people died following overnight strikes, the regional governor said. In Belgorod, which borders Ukraine, officials said a woman died after a civilian bus was hit, while Moscow region governor Andrey Vorobyov reported that an 83 year old man died in a separate drone attack. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said a Wildberries warehouse in Koledino, about 25 kilometers, or 15.5 miles, from central Moscow, was struck and left three people injured, with video footage showing fire and heavy smoke rising above the facility. Wildberries, often compared to Amazon, has faced repeated attacks since July, when Kyiv said it was deliberately targeting logistics hubs Russians use to acquire military equipment as part of a broader effort to disrupt supply lines feeding the Russian army. In Ukraine, officials said a 66 year old man and a 64 year old woman died after a guided aerial bomb struck a private home in the Zaporizhzhia region. Two additional deaths were reported in Kryvyi Rih, a city in the Dnipropetrovsk region, while officials in Sumy, Donetsk and Kherson each reported one fatality, including a 51 year old killed in a drone strike in Sumy. Air raid sirens sounded four times overnight in Kyiv as Russian forces struck the capital. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least six people, including a child, were injured in the attacks. Russian officials said their strikes on Kyiv Saturday night targeted a FirePoint facility that produces components for Ukraine’s Flamingo missiles, along with a factory manufacturing drone parts. The strikes also damaged a book market in the city’s Pochayna district, leaving charred books scattered across the ground as firefighters worked to extinguish the remaining flames. Valentina, 69, whose husband ran a stall at the market, described searching through the debris and recognizing books that had belonged to his stall lying scattered on the ground. She said she never imagined something like this would happen to her family. Luba, 42, who owns a vinyl record store nearby, said she lost stock worth roughly 500,000 hryvnias, or about £8,262, in the strikes. She called the shop her life’s work and said many of the destroyed records were rare and could not be replaced. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said 13 regions across the country came under attack this week, with Russia launching more than 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided aerial bombs and 62 missiles during that period. He said Russian forces strike civilian infrastructure wherever their ballistic missiles can reach. Russia launched its full scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and currently controls roughly a fifth of Ukrainian territory. With neither side making significant progress along the lengthy front line in recent months, the war has increasingly shifted toward an aerial contest, with both countries trading missile and drone strikes aimed at degrading the other’s capacity to keep fighting.

ICC member states decide Karim Khan’s future

The International Criminal Court (ICC) member states met on Friday to decide the future of suspended Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan, who is facing allegations of sexual misconduct made by a former staff member. Khan has firmly denied all accusations and insists he has done nothing wrong. Representatives from the court’s 125 member countries gathered at the United Nations headquarters in New York to vote on whether Khan should continue in office or be removed permanently. The decision is being made through a secret ballot, and an absolute majority is required for a final outcome. Karim Khan stepped aside from his duties in May 2025 after the allegations emerged and an internal investigation was launched. Last month, the ICC’s governing bureau suspended him from office, stressing that the suspension was a temporary administrative measure and did not represent a final judgment on the case. During the meeting, Assembly of States Parties President Päivi Kaukoranta described the issue as a complex and sensitive disciplinary matter. She urged member states to conduct the proceedings fairly while respecting the rights, privacy and dignity of everyone involved and protecting the credibility of the court. The allegations gained wider international attention after the complainant, identified only as Sarah, publicly shared her account in a recent media interview. She alleged that repeated inappropriate behaviour by Khan eventually led to physical assault. She also said the significant difference in authority between them meant there could be no genuine consent. Khan has repeatedly denied the allegations. His legal team recently urged ICC member states not to remove him, arguing that he had not been given a fair opportunity to defend himself during the disciplinary process. His lawyers also warned that dismissing the prosecutor without proper legal safeguards could weaken the independence of future ICC prosecutors. Supporters of Khan argue that the investigation did not conclusively establish misconduct and say the case could create a dangerous precedent for future office holders. Others believe the seriousness of the allegations requires decisive action to maintain public trust in the court. Since becoming the ICC’s chief prosecutor in 2021, Khan has overseen several major international investigations. He gained global attention after seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over the Gaza conflict. The court also issued arrest warrants for several Hamas leaders during his tenure. Those decisions led to strong criticism from Israel and sanctions imposed by the United States on Khan and several ICC judges, increasing political pressure on the court. Legal experts remain divided over the case. Some argue that removing Khan is necessary to protect the ICC’s credibility and public confidence. Others maintain that any decision must be based strictly on due process and the rule of law rather than political considerations.

Ye to perform in Russia, marking major Western star’s return

Ye, the American rapper and former Kanye West, is set to perform two concerts in St Petersburg, Russia, this October. His planned performances are attracting significant international attention, as he is expected to become the biggest Western music star to perform in Russia since the country launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine four years ago. The concerts will take place at the 70,000-seat Gazprom Arena. Tickets reportedly sold out within only a few hours after the shows were announced on Monday. Ticket prices ranged from around 9,000 roubles (£78) to 160,000 roubles (£1,394), showing the strong demand for the controversial rapper’s appearance. The performances come at a time when Ye is attempting to rebuild his public image following years of controversial statements, particularly remarks widely condemned as antisemitic and supportive of Nazi ideology. In January, the rapper issued an apology and attributed some of his behaviour to a brain injury and bipolar disorder. Ye’s attempts to return to the international concert scene have faced considerable difficulties. His planned European tour this summer was disrupted after several performances were cancelled because of public criticism surrounding his views. In the United Kingdom, the long-established Wireless Festival was cancelled after Ye, who had been scheduled to headline all three nights, was refused permission to enter the country. The UK Home Office said the decision was based on the assessment that his presence would not be “conducive to the public good”. Other concerts in France, Poland, Italy and the Czech Republic were also cancelled. However, performances in Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Turkey and Albania went ahead. His concert in Madrid earlier this month attracted substantial international interest. According to Spanish national broadcaster, as many as 60% of those attending were foreigners who had been unable to see Ye perform in their own countries. Critics praised the concert’s impressive production and stage design, particularly the huge illuminated dome on which the rapper performed. Despite the controversy surrounding his public statements, some reviewers described the Madrid performance positively. Critics highlighted the energetic atmosphere, extensive selection of popular songs and Ye’s apparent determination to reconnect with audiences. One reviewer even observed that there were no visible Nazi supporters among the crowd. Ye’s upcoming Russian concerts are not entirely unexpected. Rumours that the musician intended to perform in Russia have circulated for several years. In 2024, he visited the country to attend the birthday celebrations of fashion designer Gosha Rubchinskiy, with whom he has previously collaborated. However, his decision to perform in Russia has also received criticism from some Russian figures. Conservative lawmaker Vitaly Milonov suggested that Ye should perform traditional Russian songs rather than his usual repertoire. He said he hoped the experience would encourage the rapper to abandon what he described as his “disgusting antics” and become a more conventional public figure. Before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, performances by major Western musicians were relatively common in the country. International acts including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lana Del Rey, Muse and System of a Down had all performed there. Since the war began, however, the situation has changed significantly. Many international record companies suspended their operations in Russia, while numerous Western artists stopped touring there. As a result, only a limited number of Western musicians have performed in Russia in recent years. Those who have appeared have generally been less prominent international acts, including Tyga, DaBaby, Akon and rapper Lil Pump. Ye’s controversy dates back to 2022, when he began making a series of offensive comments on social media. His remarks resulted in restrictions or suspensions on some of his accounts, while major companies also distanced themselves from him. Adidas and Balenciaga were among the prominent brands that ended their relationships with the rapper. The controversy intensified when Ye publicly described himself as a Nazi and released a song titled “Heil Hitler”. He also promoted clothing featuring a swastika, causing widespread condemnation. In January, however, Ye published a full-page advertisement  in which he apologised for his previous behaviour. He stated that he was neither a Nazi nor an antisemite and described his previous actions as part of a prolonged period of unstable behaviour. Ye said he had experienced what he called a four-month period of manic, paranoid and impulsive behaviour. He also explained that his bipolar disorder had affected his ability to recognise that he was unwell at the time. His upcoming concerts in St Petersburg therefore represent more than simply another entry on his performance schedule. They mark a significant return to a country where major Western artists have largely been absent since the invasion of Ukraine. The shows are likely to attract both Russian fans and international attention, while also continuing the debate over whether controversial artists should be given major international platforms despite their previous statements and conduct.

Massive $4 billion Iranian sanctions evasion network uncovered behind illegal gambling and crypto scheme

A Reuters investigation has exposed a massive Iranian sanctions evasion network operating through a Dubai-based, unlicensed cryptocurrency exchange named Shelbit. The exchange has processed over $4 billion since May 2024, serving as a critical financial hub that links a Farsi-language illegal gambling network of over 2,000 websites, Iran’s central bank, state-backed bitcoin mining operations, and entities tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Despite strict prohibitions against gambling under Iranian law, the vast network utilises Iran’s central bank-regulated online payments system, allowing sanctioned entities and illicit networks direct access to global crypto markets and major international exchanges. Fronted by prominent Iranian influencers Sasha Sobhani and Pooyan Mokhtari, who promote the gambling sites to millions of social media followers while flaunting lavish lifestyles abroad, the operation is considered one of the largest illegal gambling and sanctions evasion schemes ever identified. Regulatory and law enforcement agencies have begun taking action against the network. Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) issued a cease-and-desist order against Shelbit for anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing violations, while the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) confirmed it is actively investigating the network’s digital asset transactions.

Punjab University Town-III project faces fresh scr…

LAHORE: A Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker has submitted an adjournment motion in the Punjab Assembly, calling for a comprehensive investigation into alleged financial and administrative irregularities surrounding the Punjab University Town-III housing scheme. According to the motion submitted by MPA Raja Shaukat Aziz, the housing project was allegedly launched in 2017 by a Punjab University professor without fulfilling the required legal and regulatory formalities. It further claims that the professor entered into a development agreement with his own brother, who was appointed as the project’s developer despite the alleged absence of due legal procedures. The motion alleges that payments amounting to Rs2.70 billion were made to the developer. However, despite the release of funds, no significant development work was carried out at the project site, and plot holders have yet to receive possession of their plots. The document states that nearly 900 affected families have been waiting for justice for the past nine years, claiming they have suffered financial losses and uncertainty due to the stalled housing scheme. It further alleges that, despite repeated complaints, no effective legal action has been taken against those purportedly responsible. Seeking legislative intervention, Raja Shaukat Aziz has urged the Punjab Assembly to establish a special committee to investigate the Town-III project, determine responsibility for the alleged irregularities, and ensure appropriate legal action against those found accountable. The Punjab University Town-III housing scheme has previously remained under public and academic scrutiny over allegations of administrative and financial mismanagement. The latest move is expected to renew debate over accountability and transparency in public housing projects.
