Cockroach’ protests end in stunning victory

India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday after days of youth-led protests over alleged irregularities in major entrance examinations.

The resignation came as thousands of young people gathered in New Delhi and other parts of the country under the banner of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

The protesters had demanded Pradhan’s removal and major reforms to the country’s examination system. They also raised wider concerns about unemployment and limited opportunities for young people.

Pradhan confirmed that he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a statement, he said he was deeply concerned about the events of the previous 10 days.

He said the decision was not about personal prestige. He added that India’s youth were an important strength of the country and said efforts were needed to prevent young people from becoming trapped in uncertainty.

The announcement immediately triggered celebrations at the main protest site at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke told the cheering crowd, “We have done it.” Hundreds of protesters responded with loud applause and celebrations.

The CJP later announced that its demands had been accepted following talks with the government. It said the protests would therefore be called off.

The movement had focused on alleged irregularities in examinations, including concerns over the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Protesters demanded greater transparency and accountability in the examination system.

They also called for compensation for people affected by examination irregularities. Another demand was the withdrawal of legal cases against protesters.

The government held two rounds of talks with CJP representatives during the week. However, the discussions initially failed to produce an agreement.

Pradhan submitted his resignation before a third round of talks was scheduled.

The protests also faced a strong response from police. Authorities used tear gas and batons when demonstrators attempted to march from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament.

The campaign gradually expanded beyond examination issues. Protesters also highlighted unemployment, lack of opportunities for young people and broader concerns about governance.

The demonstrations became one of the most significant challenges to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government since his re-election in 2024.

India’s opposition leader Rahul Gandhi also backed the protesters. He described Pradhan’s resignation as a major development and urged Modi to apologise to students and address their concerns.

Gandhi also called for action against those accused of violence against students during the demonstrations.

The resignation brought an emotional response from protesters. One 27-year-old participant who visited the protest site for the first time on Saturday described the atmosphere as highly charged, particularly after the minister’s resignation.

Pakistan hails Hamas disarmament progress, under p…

Pakistan has welcomed recent progress under the Gaza Peace Plan, describing developments toward Hamas’ disarmament as a positive step that could help revive efforts for a lasting political solution and the creation of an independent Palestinian state. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the mediation efforts of the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye after US President Donald Trump announced that an agreement had been reached for the complete disarmament of Hamas. The announcement is viewed as a significant breakthrough in implementing the Gaza ceasefire framework, as the issue of Hamas’ weapons has remained one of the main obstacles since the truce was reached in October 2025. In a statement shared on social media, the prime minister said Pakistan supports the ongoing work of the Board of Peace and expressed hope that all commitments under the Gaza Peace Plan would now move toward practical implementation. He emphasized that sustained diplomatic efforts should lead to a credible, time-bound political process in line with United Nations resolutions, ultimately ensuring the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination through the establishment of an independent state. According to Hamas officials, a committee operating under the Board of Peace will supervise the storage of the group’s weapons as part of the agreed process. The organization has also urged mediators to ensure that Israel fulfills its obligations under the ceasefire, including the withdrawal of its forces from Gaza. Although the ceasefire has reduced large-scale fighting, violence has not completely stopped. Fresh Israeli strikes reportedly killed at least four Palestinians, including two children, highlighting the fragile security situation despite ongoing diplomatic efforts. Meanwhile, Egyptian media reported that Cairo is expected to host another meeting of the ceasefire mediators, including representatives from the United States, Qatar, and Türkiye, to discuss the next phase of the peace plan. Pakistan has consistently maintained its support for the Palestinian cause and continues to advocate for an independent Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. Islamabad, which has no diplomatic relations with Israel, has repeatedly urged the international community to work toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and adherence to international law.

Zayn Malik promotes greenpeace ‘Be Cool’ Tee a…

Zayn Malik has joined forces with Greenpeace UK to promote a new “Be Cool” T-shirt campaign as Britain faces an intense summer heatwave and growing concerns over the effects of climate change. Malik encouraged his fans to support the campaign by purchasing the oversized T-shirt, with proceeds going towards Greenpeace’s climate-focused work and efforts to promote solutions to global warming. The partnership marks another example of the singer using his public platform to draw attention to environmental issues. The campaign comes as the United Kingdom experiences exceptionally high temperatures during the summer of 2026. Several areas have recorded temperatures significantly above seasonal averages, while authorities have issued heat-health warnings. Water shortages have also led to hosepipe restrictions in some regions, as pressure on supplies increases. The prolonged heat has raised concerns beyond discomfort. Dry conditions have heightened the risk of wildfires, while health officials have warned that extreme temperatures can pose serious risks, particularly to older people, young children and those with existing health problems. Greenpeace UK has used the campaign to highlight the connection between rising temperatures and the urgent need for climate action. The organisation hopes the collaboration will encourage people, particularly younger audiences, to learn more about climate change and support measures aimed at reducing emissions and protecting the environment. Malik’s involvement quickly attracted attention online, with fans praising the singer for combining fashion with an environmental message. Many supporters welcomed his decision to use his influence to promote a cause extending beyond music. Social media reactions also brought a lighter side to the campaign. Some fans joked that, with Britain experiencing record-breaking heat, the planet was “getting hotter than Zayn himself.” The campaign arrives at a time when extreme weather is increasingly shaping public discussions about climate change. By pairing a simple summer wardrobe item with an environmental message, Malik and Greenpeace UK are hoping to turn fan enthusiasm into meaningful support for climate solutions.
