Senior officers have said there were no clear opportunities that would have allowed the force to identify his offending earlier. The investigation traces back to a woman in her late thirties who walked into a Glasgow police station late last year to report the assault. She described how, in 2012, she had called officers to her home after a disturbance, only for one of the responding officers to later attack her. Cases involving police officers who abuse their positions of trust to target victims, particularly vulnerable women and sex workers, have prompted broader scrutiny of vetting and oversight procedures within UK police forces in recent years.     Palestinians in Gaza held funeral prayers on Tuesday for 112 people whose remains were recovered from the rubble of homes destroyed during the war between Israel and Hamas. Given the scale of the casualties, the funeral ranks among the largest recorded in Palestinian history. Civil defense teams recovered the bodies from the rubble on Saturday. A Civil Defence statement said the victims included 40 children, 38 women and seven people with disabilities. Civil Defence official Mohammad Abu Dan said search teams have so far been unable to locate 157 additional bodies still believed to be buried under the rubble. More than 73,000 people have been killed and over 174,000 injured in Gaza since the war began in October 2023, according to local health authorities. Despite a ceasefire agreement that took effect on October 10, 2025, Israeli forces have continued carrying out attacks across the territory, killing 1,250 Palestinians and injuring 4,110 others since the truce began, Gaza’s Health Ministry said. Palestinian authorities estimate that around 9,500 people remain missing under the rubble of buildings destroyed across the territory. A day earlier, at least 19 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire over a 24 hour period, pushing the overall death toll since October 2023 to 73,375, according to the Health Ministry. Officials said the toll included 18 people killed directly by Israeli forces and one person who died from wounds sustained in an earlier attack. The ministry reported that 35 additional injured people were taken to hospitals during the same period, bringing the total number of injuries to 174,220. The ministry said Saturday that 152 people were killed in Gaza during July, the highest monthly death toll recorded since the start of the year, despite the ceasefire that took effect in October 2025. The truce followed nearly two years of war that began on October 8, 2023, and caused widespread destruction across the territory, affecting an estimated 90 percent of civilian infrastructure. A major objective of the mission is to investigate dark energy the mysterious phenomenon believed to be responsible for the accelerating expansion of the universe. Researchers also want to learn more about dark matter which cannot be seen directly but affects stars and galaxies through gravity. Scientists will use Roman to study gravitational lensing a phenomenon in which massive objects bend light traveling through space. These measurements could provide new tests of Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity and help researchers determine whether our current understanding of gravity works across enormous distances. The telescope will also search for exoplanets which are worlds orbiting stars outside our solar system. Researchers expect the mission to identify thousands of new planets and gather information about how planetary systems are formed. Roman will also test technology that could eventually allow scientists to directly image some nearby exoplanets. After launch the telescope will travel to Lagrange Point 2, approximately 1.6 million kilometers from Earth. The James Webb Space Telescope operates in the same region while Hubble orbits much closer to Earth. NASA has planned an initial five-year mission for Roman. However, the telescope could potentially continue operating for several more years if it has enough fuel. Named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief astronomer the telescope represents another major step in humanity’s effort to understand the universe. Its discoveries could reshape scientists’ knowledge of cosmic evolution, gravity, dark matter, dark energy and distant planetary systems.

    AJK election results: PML-N, PPP in close contest

    Unofficial and preliminary results from the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections have started to emerge, with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) locked in a close contest across several constituencies. The first phase covered 13 constituencies in Mirpur Division, including the districts of Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber. Vote counting began after polling ended. The preliminary results from the constituencies are as follows: LA-1 Mirpur-I: Results from 17 of the 139 polling stations have been received. PML-N candidate Azhar Sadiq is leading with 1,692 votes. PPP candidate Muhammad Afsar Shahid is in second place with 1,482 votes. LA-2 Mirpur-II: Results from 34 of 149 polling stations have been reported. PPP candidate Qasim Majeed is ahead with 3,103 votes. PML-N’s Azeem Bakhsh Chaudhry has secured 2,409 votes and is in second place. LA-3 Mirpur-III: Results from 18 of 161 polling stations show PML-N candidate Chaudhry Muhammad Saeed leading with 2,265 votes. PPP candidate Chaudhry Yasir Sultan is second with 1,470 votes. Claims of disruption in Bhimber PPP AJK Election Cell in-charge Sardar Abdul Shakoor claimed that disturbances took place at polling stations 119, 120 and 121 in LA-5 Barnala. He said the disruption affected the polling process. According to Shakoor, voting resumed after security forces reached the area. However, he said polling remained slow afterward. Raja Pervez Ashraf calls for action PPP leader Raja Pervez Ashraf expressed concern over alleged irregularities in several constituencies. He called for additional security personnel at sensitive polling stations, including locations in Gulpur, Thurochi and Muhajir Camp. Ashraf urged the Election Commission to take immediate and impartial notice of all complaints. He also called for steps to ensure that the elections remain free, transparent and fair. Police say polling remained peaceful The spokesperson for the AJK inspector general of police said polling in the first phase across Mirpur Division remained peaceful. The spokesperson said residents had rejected a call for a long march by a banned committee. Instead, voters chose to exercise their democratic right. Voters began arriving at polling stations soon after voting opened at 8am. AJK Inspector General of Police Liaquat Ali Malik thanked residents for cooperating with authorities and helping maintain peace during the electoral process. He warned that no one, including political workers, would be allowed to take the law into their own hands.

    GUJRAT: The Agriculture (Extension) Department has seized counterfeit DAP fertiliser worth more than Rs20 million during a raid at Hasan Rice Mills in Mouza Mohla, Gujrat, in what officials described as a major crackdown on the illegal fertiliser trade. The operation was conducted under the supervision of Director Agriculture (Extension) Gujrat Division Dr Irfanullah Warraich by Assistant Director Agriculture (Extension) and Assistant Controller Fertilizer Muhammad Athar Latif. During the raid, officials inspected the premises and collected samples of suspected DAP fertiliser for laboratory testing. They also sealed 1,140 bags of fertiliser, each weighing 50 kilograms, with an estimated value of Rs18.24 million. According to the Agriculture Department, laboratory analysis later confirmed that the fertiliser was counterfeit. Officials said subsequent investigations revealed that a total of 1,270 bags of fake DAP fertiliser, worth approximately Rs20.32 million, were linked to the operation. Out of these, 1,244 bags were taken into police custody as case property. A case has been registered against Muhammad Azmat and other suspects under the Punjab Fertilizer Control Act, 2025. Police also arrested Ghulam Hussain, the in-charge of Hasan Rice Mills, during the raid. The department said the crackdown was aimed at protecting farmers from substandard agricultural inputs that could adversely affect crop production and cause financial losses. Officials added that counterfeit fertilisers not only reduce crop yields but also undermine farmers’ confidence in certified agricultural products. They urged growers to purchase fertilisers only from authorised dealers and to report any suspicious products or illegal storage facilities to the Agriculture Department. The department said further investigations are underway to trace the source of the counterfeit fertiliser, identify other individuals involved in its manufacture and distribution, and determine whether similar consignments had been supplied to other markets in the region. Agriculture officials reaffirmed their commitment to continuing strict enforcement against the production, storage and sale of fake fertilisers to safeguard farmers’ interests and ensure the availability of quality agricultural inputs across Punjab.
