Fake DAP fertiliser worth over Rs20m seized in Guj…

GUJRAT: The Agriculture (Extension) Department has seized counterfeit DAP fertiliser worth more than Rs20 million during a raid at Hasan Rice Mills in Mouza Mohla, Gujrat, in what officials described as a major crackdown on the illegal fertiliser trade.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of Director Agriculture (Extension) Gujrat Division Dr Irfanullah Warraich by Assistant Director Agriculture (Extension) and Assistant Controller Fertilizer Muhammad Athar Latif.

During the raid, officials inspected the premises and collected samples of suspected DAP fertiliser for laboratory testing. They also sealed 1,140 bags of fertiliser, each weighing 50 kilograms, with an estimated value of Rs18.24 million.

According to the Agriculture Department, laboratory analysis later confirmed that the fertiliser was counterfeit.

Officials said subsequent investigations revealed that a total of 1,270 bags of fake DAP fertiliser, worth approximately Rs20.32 million, were linked to the operation. Out of these, 1,244 bags were taken into police custody as case property.

A case has been registered against Muhammad Azmat and other suspects under the Punjab Fertilizer Control Act, 2025. Police also arrested Ghulam Hussain, the in-charge of Hasan Rice Mills, during the raid.

The department said the crackdown was aimed at protecting farmers from substandard agricultural inputs that could adversely affect crop production and cause financial losses.

Officials added that counterfeit fertilisers not only reduce crop yields but also undermine farmers’ confidence in certified agricultural products. They urged growers to purchase fertilisers only from authorised dealers and to report any suspicious products or illegal storage facilities to the Agriculture Department.

The department said further investigations are underway to trace the source of the counterfeit fertiliser, identify other individuals involved in its manufacture and distribution, and determine whether similar consignments had been supplied to other markets in the region.

Agriculture officials reaffirmed their commitment to continuing strict enforcement against the production, storage and sale of fake fertilisers to safeguard farmers’ interests and ensure the availability of quality agricultural inputs across Punjab.

    Turkey’s governing coalition put forward a draft law before parliament on Wednesday designed to secure lasting peace with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, offering legal protection from prosecution to many former fighters and suspending prison terms for others. The legislation represents a significant step toward closing out an insurgency that has claimed more than 40,000 lives since 1984, deepened political divisions inside Turkey and spilled violence into neighboring Iraq and Syria over four decades. The bill aims to bring the long running conflict to a close in part by clearing the way for potentially thousands of former PKK fighters and civilians to return to Turkey from hideouts in northern Iraq. The measure carries support from a majority of lawmakers and is expected to clear parliament later this week, though public opinion polls suggest many Turks remain doubtful it will deliver a durable peace. Under the bill, Turkey’s national security council would confirm the group’s disarmament, while a dedicated committee, including the vice president, several cabinet ministers and the head of the MIT intelligence service, would supervise the surrender and disarmament of militants. That committee would then report on the process to a parliamentary oversight commission. According to the text of the legislation, the bill would suspend prison sentences for individuals convicted of PKK membership or of assisting the organization. It would also extend legal protection to fighters who were not involved in killings, provided they return to Turkey within six months of the law taking effect. PKK figures convicted of more serious offenses, including leading a terrorist organization or sentenced to aggravated life terms before 2005, would fall outside the scope of these protections and would not receive suspended sentences. That exclusion means PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan, who has been imprisoned since 1999 under an aggravated life sentence, would remain behind bars even as the broader peace process moves forward. Ocalan called on the PKK to lay down its weapons and dissolve last year, a call the group’s leadership accepted. President Tayyip Erdogan’s governing AK Party secured backing for the bill, formally titled the national solidarity and social integration law, from its nationalist ally the MHP as well as the pro Kurdish DEM Party. Most other parties in parliament, including the main opposition, have also expressed support for the legislation. DEM co chair Tuncer Bakirhan described the vote as an important first step, saying he hopes the process continues forward in a constructive direction. The peace initiative between Turkey, which fields NATO’s second largest army, and the PKK first got underway in late 2024. It nearly stalled earlier this year, however, as the war involving Iran raised fears of wider regional instability and diverted attention from the domestic peace effort. Turkey, along with the United States and the European Union, classifies the PKK as a terrorist organization. The group launched its armed campaign in 1984, initially demanding an independent Kurdish state in southeastern Turkey before later shifting its goals toward greater autonomy and expanded political rights for Kurdish communities within Turkey. The legislation now heads toward a parliamentary vote expected within days, marking one of the most consequential efforts yet to formally end a conflict that has shaped Turkish domestic politics and regional security dynamics for more than a generation.

    Punjab has taken a major step toward modernizing its livestock health system with the establishment of a new Animal Disease Reporting and Surveillance Directorate and a Provincial Response Unit. Provincial Minister for Livestock and Agriculture Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani inaugurated the new building of the Directorate of Animal Disease Reporting and Surveillance on Tuesday, August 18. Speaking at the inauguration, Kirmani said the Punjab Livestock Department has established the Animal Disease Reporting and Surveillance and Provincial Response Unit to strengthen disease monitoring and ensure a rapid response to emergencies involving animal diseases. He said the Provincial Response Unit will remain prepared to respond quickly to disease outbreaks and other unexpected situations, helping protect livestock and support farmers. Kirmani said Punjab has become the first province to establish a modern disease diagnosis and surveillance system for the livestock sector. Under the new system, the department’s divisional, district and tehsil-level formations will work in coordination with the provincial unit. According to the minister, the upgraded system will bring livestock disease diagnosis and surveillance in line with modern requirements and improve the department’s ability to identify and respond to outbreaks at an early stage. He said renovation and upgradation work on District Disease Investigation Laboratories in 27 districts is being completed within a short period. The laboratories are also receiving modern equipment, including X-ray and ultrasound machines, along with other essential diagnostic tools. The department is also introducing 17 mobile veterinary laboratories to provide on-site disease diagnosis and surveillance in the field. These mobile units will carry the equipment and supplies required for diagnosing diseases and providing veterinary treatment, allowing departmental teams to reach affected farmers without unnecessary delays. Kirmani said the modern laboratory network will help Punjab tackle major challenges in the livestock sector, particularly sudden outbreaks of infectious diseases among animals. He added that the government is working to bring disease surveillance and rapid-response mechanisms in line with international standards. He further said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the provincial government has developed a system under which livestock department teams will reach farmers directly instead of requiring farmers to travel to departmental facilities for every issue. The minister said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has provided the Livestock Department with funding and other necessary facilities to strengthen veterinary services across Punjab. He added that the new mobile veterinary laboratories will also connect with a vehicle tracking and monitoring system similar to the system used by the Suthra Punjab Authority. The technology will help officials monitor the movement and deployment of mobile units and improve the department’s field response. The initiative is expected to strengthen disease detection, improve emergency response, expand veterinary services in rural areas and provide farmers with faster access to livestock healthcare.
