Indonesia central bank chief resigns suddenly

JAKARTA: Indonesia’s central bank governor Perry Warjiyo has unexpectedly stepped down, raising concerns among investors about the future independence of monetary policy and the stability of financial markets.

President Prabowo Subianto accepted Warjiyo’s resignation on Monday. The government said the governor resigned for personal reasons.

Destry Damayanti, a senior deputy governor at Bank Indonesia (BI), has been appointed interim governor. She has pledged to maintain continuity and ensure that the central bank continues carrying out its responsibilities.

The surprise resignation came at a sensitive time for Indonesia’s economy. Bank Indonesia has faced growing pressure to support the government’s ambitious economic growth plans.

The Indonesian rupiah has also faced significant pressure. It fell to a record low in June amid concerns over fiscal management and the independence of the central bank.

Following news of Warjiyo’s departure, the rupiah weakened further. It fell as much as 0.36% to around 18,000 against the US dollar. Indonesia’s main stock index also moved between gains and losses during volatile trading.

Analysts warned that the sudden leadership change could unsettle investors.

Some economists said concerns could increase if the next permanent governor is seen as closely aligned with the government. They stressed that Bank Indonesia’s independence is important for maintaining investor confidence and stable monetary policy.

Warjiyo submitted his resignation to the president on Saturday. Officials did not provide further details about his personal reasons.

Warjiyo has spent decades at Bank Indonesia. He joined the institution in 1984 and was appointed governor for the first time in 2018.

He was reappointed in 2023 for another five-year term.

The appointment of his permanent successor will require both presidential and parliamentary approval. The president will nominate a candidate, who will then face a parliamentary suitability review before a final decision is made.

The government has not yet submitted a permanent nomination.

Officials have urged investors and other market participants to remain calm during the transition. They said the selection process would be conducted transparently and would not interfere with monetary policy or financial stability.

Destry said the central bank would continue working to maintain rupiah stability and protect the country’s financial system.

The leadership change comes after Indonesia introduced legislative changes affecting the central bank and other independent financial regulators. The new framework gives lawmakers greater authority to issue binding recommendations to these institutions.

The changes have already raised questions about the level of Bank Indonesia’s independence.

Credit rating agencies have also been monitoring developments surrounding the central bank’s mandate. Moody’s and Fitch previously highlighted concerns about changes to the institution’s role when they revised Indonesia’s credit outlook to negative.

S&P Global Ratings, however, maintained a stable outlook this month. It said Bank Indonesia had maintained operational independence broadly comparable with other central banks in the region.

Bank Indonesia has recently taken measures to support the rupiah and attract foreign investment. It unexpectedly kept interest rates unchanged last week while introducing new incentives aimed at encouraging capital inflows.

The central bank had previously raised interest rates by a total of 100 basis points since May to support the currency.

The latest resignation adds another layer of uncertainty for investors as the government seeks faster economic growth.

Markets will now closely watch the selection of Warjiyo’s permanent successor. Investors are expected to assess whether the new leadership can maintain monetary stability while responding to the government’s economic priorities.

Indonesia, which maintains no formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, has not issued an official response. The dispute coincides with Taiwan conducting its annual Han Kuang military exercises to simulate defences against a potential Chinese invasion, as well as high-level defence meetings between US and Indonesian officials in Jakarta.

    A district and sessions court in Islamabad has ruled in favor of Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal in a long-running defamation lawsuit, ordering former federal minister Murad Saeed to pay Rs2.5 million in damages for making corruption allegations that the court found to be unsubstantiated. The judgment was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge Hakim Khan, who concluded that the statements made by Murad Saeed had harmed Ahsan Iqbal’s reputation and amounted to defamation under the law. According to the court’s ruling, Murad Saeed failed to prove his public allegations that Ahsan Iqbal had been involved in corruption worth Rs70 billion. The court held that the accusations, which included claims of corruption, misuse of authority, and receiving illegal commissions, were not supported by evidence and therefore constituted defamatory statements. The case originated from remarks made by Murad Saeed in 2019, when he accused Ahsan Iqbal of financial irregularities in connection with the Multan–Sukkur Motorway Project, one of Pakistan’s major infrastructure developments. Ahsan Iqbal strongly denied the allegations and subsequently filed a defamation suit seeking Rs10 billion in damages. In its written judgment, the court acknowledged that Ahsan Iqbal had claimed Rs10 billion as compensation but determined that the amount sought was excessive in light of the evidence presented during the proceedings. Instead, the court awarded Rs2.5 million in damages, describing the sum as appropriate compensation for the reputational harm caused by the false allegations. The judgment stated that Murad Saeed’s controversial statements had damaged Ahsan Iqbal’s public image, honor, and dignity. It further observed that the allegations created a negative perception of the federal minister among members of the public, affecting his credibility and standing. According to the court, the accusations amounted to a direct attack on Ahsan Iqbal’s integrity, character, and professional reputation. Since the allegations involved serious claims of corruption and abuse of public office, the court found that they had the potential to undermine public confidence in him without any factual basis. The ruling also noted that Murad Saeed neither appeared before the court to defend his statements nor presented any evidence to substantiate the corruption allegations. His failure to support the claims played a significant role in the court’s decision to rule in favor of Ahsan Iqbal. The verdict reinforces the legal principle that individuals making public allegations of corruption must be prepared to provide credible evidence to support their claims. In the absence of such proof, the court held that the statements amounted to defamation and entitled the affected party to compensation. The decision marks the conclusion of a legal dispute that has remained pending since 2019 and highlights the growing use of defamation proceedings in Pakistan to address reputational damage arising from political statements. While the court reduced the amount of compensation sought by Ahsan Iqbal, it nevertheless concluded that Murad Saeed’s allegations were unfounded and had caused measurable harm to the minister’s reputation. As a result, the former federal minister has been directed to pay Rs2.5 million in damages in accordance with the court’s judgment.

This was confirmed by Rana Sanaullah, adviser to the prime minister on political affairs. Bilawal addressed PML-N directly in a video message. He asked if they could hear a sound. He said it was the countdown for the federal government beginning. He also announced a public gathering in Bagh district. He called on supporters in Poonch to prepare for a rally on August 10. He told them to get ready for his arrival. Bilawal described the elections as neither free nor fair. He called them rigged, and used strong words like bullet elections and bloody elections. Despite the results, he praised his party workers. He said the PPP had won nine seats despite the difficult circumstances. He vowed to reclaim seats he said had been stolen in Mirpur and Muzaffarabad. He said the PPP would continue its struggle and would not lose courage or leave the field. Sindh minister and senior PPP leader Sharjeel Inam Memon issued a similar warning shortly before Bilawal spoke. Memon said the countdown for the federal government had begun. He claimed PML-N had given ballot papers to its candidates two days before voting, working together with the Election Commission. Memon also alleged that the administration was ignoring complaints from the current president and prime minister of AJK. He called it historic rigging. He questioned whether top PML-N leaders, including Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, and Maryam Nawaz Sharif, had genuinely won their own seats in the 2024 elections. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar responded on Monday. He said accusations of rigging should not be made without solid evidence. He urged the PPP to show political maturity and accept the election results. His comments came a day after the second phase of voting was held in Muzaffarabad Division and refugee seats. Unofficial results showed PML-N leading in five constituencies, while PPP had won two. In the first phase, PML-N had already secured nine of the thirteen seats in Mirpur Division, with PPP winning four. Tarar said PPP should have worked harder, as it did during the Gilgit-Baltistan elections. He questioned the evidence behind Memon’s claims and said accusations should not be made without proof. He said the people of AJK voted for the party that focused on development. He advised PPP to reflect on its own performance in Sindh instead of blaming others.
