FIFA World Cup visitors in Canada file 175 Asylum …

Around 175 foreign nationals who traveled to Canada to attend FIFA World Cup matches have filed applications for political asylum, according to immigration authorities.

Canada hosted several FIFA World Cup matches in the cities of Toronto and Vancouver, for which the country issued thousands of temporary visas to international visitors. Many fans from different countries applied for tourist visas to watch the tournament, although a significant number of applications were rejected.

After arriving in Canada, 175 visitors submitted asylum claims that will now be reviewed under the country’s refugee protection laws. Immigration officials have not disclosed how many of those seeking asylum were athletes or members of sports delegations.

According to available information, 25 individuals from Ghana have filed asylum applications, while 15 applicants each from Egypt and Colombia have also requested protection in Canada. Officials have indicated that the number of applications could increase further.

Canadian authorities had previously warned foreign visitors that obtaining a visa for FIFA World Cup travel does not provide a pathway to remain in the country beyond the permitted period or automatically qualify them for asylum.

The asylum claims will undergo a legal assessment, during which Canadian immigration authorities will determine whether applicants meet the requirements for refugee protection under the country’s immigration system.

The development has drawn attention as Canada continues to manage increased international travel and immigration applications linked to major global events.

Emilio Gay boosts England ahead of Pakistan Tests

BECKENHAM: England have received a timely boost ahead of their Test series against Pakistan, with opener Emilio Gay included in the Professional County Club Select XI squad for a three-day warm-up match. Gay’s participation is encouraging news after the left-handed batter suffered a right shoulder injury while representing Durham against Middlesex in the One-Day Cup last week. He experienced discomfort early in his innings before aggravating the problem while playing a straight drive against Toby Roland-Jones. The 26-year-old was forced to leave the field after scoring nine runs from 17 deliveries, raising concerns over his availability for England’s upcoming Test assignment. However, medical scans reportedly showed no serious damage, allowing Gay to return to competitive action as England assess his fitness. The warm-up fixture at Beckenham was initially scheduled for four days but has been shortened to three following an agreement between the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Pakistan Cricket Board. Gay will feature alongside England Test squad members Shoaib Bashir and Matthew Fisher in the PCC Select XI. The match could provide England with an important opportunity to monitor Gay’s shoulder before the first Test. Gay earned his place in England’s Test plans after an impressive run of form and made his international debut earlier this summer. His availability is particularly significant as England reshape their batting line-up following Ben Stokes’ retirement. Bashir, meanwhile, remains highly regarded by England’s selectors despite limited recent county appearances. The young spinner may not feature in the Test XI, with England considering a four-seamer attack and relying on Dan Lawrence and Joe Root for occasional off-spin. The PCC Select XI will be coached by England Under-19 head coach Mike Yardy, with the England Lions head-coach position currently vacant. For England, Gay’s return offers a welcome sense of relief — but the warm-up match will reveal whether the opener is truly ready for the pressure of Test cricket against Pakistan. PCC Select XI squad Tom Haines (c), Shoaib Bashir, Luc Benkenstein, Caleb Falconer, Matt Fisher, Emilio Gay, Nathan Gilchrist, Josh Hull, Manny Lumsden, James Rew, James Sales, Charlie Tear, Noah Thain, Saif Zaib.

Epstein survivor says abuse continued during his prison sentence

A woman who says she was sexually exploited by convicted American financier Jeffrey Epstein has alleged that he continued to abuse her even while serving a sentence for soliciting prostitution from a minor. Rosa Jiles, an alleged survivor of Epstein’s abuse, said she faced sexual exploitation by him in 2009, when he was serving his sentence following a conviction related to prostitution involving an underage girl. According to Jiles, Epstein showed no remorse for his crimes and continued to prey on young women despite his criminal conviction. Jiles said her ordeal began when she was 18 and living in Uzbekistan. She claimed that a modeling agent offered her an opportunity to travel to the United States, but after she arrived, the agency placed her under financial pressure by charging her for expenses including rent, visa costs and other fees. To earn additional money, Jiles said she eventually took a receptionist job at one of Epstein’s offices. She recalled meeting Epstein for the first time in Palm Beach, Florida, where she alleged that he forced her to undress and sexually assaulted her on the same day. Jiles further claimed that the abuse continued regularly, particularly during weekends at a property in West Palm Beach. She said the alleged sexual exploitation did not end after Epstein’s release from house arrest in 2010 and continued in New York as well. According to Jiles, the experience left her convinced that authorities would never stop Epstein. She said she eventually managed to escape his control after becoming financially independent and gaining the ability to support herself. Jiles also alleged that Epstein never demonstrated genuine regret for his actions. In her account, his criminal conviction did not stop him from continuing to exploit vulnerable young women. Her allegations add to the accounts of women who have publicly described abuse and exploitation connected to Epstein, whose crimes and relationships with powerful figures drew international attention. Epstein died in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges.

Govt moves SC against Imran’s hospital transfer

A request for an early hearing has been filed in the Supreme Court against its August 18 order concerning the transfer of PTI founder Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to a private hospital. The application was filed by the Islamabad Chief Commissioner, who has asked the Supreme Court to urgently hear a review petition challenging its earlier directions regarding Imran Khan. In the review petition, the petitioner has sought a review, amendment and withdrawal of the August 18 order. The petition specifically challenges the direction to transfer the PTI founder from Adiala Jail to a private hospital. The application also challenges the court’s directions concerning his medical examination and treatment by a medical panel. According to the petition, the matter is not limited to the provision of medical facilities. It also involves questions relating to the legal and constitutional jurisdiction of the court and the authorities concerned. The review petition raises legal questions regarding the scope of judicial jurisdiction following the 27th Constitutional Amendment. It also refers to Article 175(2) of the Constitution and relevant prison laws. The petitioner has argued that the Supreme Court’s August 18 order was subject to a specific timeline, making an early hearing of the review petition necessary. The Islamabad administration has therefore requested the apex court to take up the matter on an urgent basis and reconsider the directions concerning Imran Khan’s transfer, medical examination and treatment. The development comes as authorities seek legal clarification over the implementation of the Supreme Court’s directions concerning the PTI founder’s medical care while he remains in custody.

Mayor shot dead inside town hall in Central Mexico

Valentín Lavín Romero, the mayor of Temoac in the central Mexican state of Morelos, was shot dead on Wednesday inside the municipal government headquarters. The politician, affiliated with the Green Party, an ally of the ruling Morena party, was targeted in broad daylight when armed hitmen entered the town hall before escaping on a motorcycle. The fatal attack came six months after Lavín Romero survived a previous attempt on his life in late January, when gunmen opened fire on his vehicle at a highway petrol station. His assassination marks the 14th murder of a mayor in Mexico since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October 2024, highlighting the persistent vulnerability of municipal officials in regions contested by organised crime networks. Prior to his death, Lavín Romero faced intense local scrutiny and threats. In May, a criminal group left a warning banner in the town center accusing him of protecting rival syndicates. He was also under pressure from community activists who demanded investigations into his alleged links to the homicides of two local campaigners. The state prosecutor’s office confirmed that initial forensic investigations are underway at the crime scene, though no suspects or official motives have yet been formally identified. The killing coincides with broader federal anti-corruption drives under Operation Swarm, which targets collusion between municipal administration members and regional cartels across multiple states.
