The Pakistan Cricket Board has announced the comprehensive schedule for the men’s domestic season 2026-27, introducing a new One-Day tournament to help prepare players for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The season will commence on August 11 in Multan with a week-long four-team National Champions Cup, a 50-over tournament designed to strengthen Pakistan’s one-day preparations and assess the country’s ODI talent. The teams will be selected by the National Selection Committee.

The domestic season will also include one List A tournament, three first-class competitions, two non-first-class three-day tournaments, two T20 tournaments, and age-group events for U19, U17, and U15 players. After the National Champions Cup, the President’s Cup for departmental teams will begin. The Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and the National T20 Cup will now feature 20 teams after the addition of teams from Sialkot and Peshawar, with Lahore and Karachi fielding four teams each.

The Quaid-e-Azam Trophy will begin on November 1 and will be split into Gold and Silver divisions, with both running simultaneously. The Gold division will have eight teams, while the Silver Division will feature 12 teams, including the new sides from Sialkot and Peshawar. The format of Pakistan’s premier first-class tournament has changed again, with last season featuring 10 teams and 18 teams competing in the 2024-25 season.

The Hanif Mohammad Trophy, a non-first-class three-day tournament introduced in 2023-24 for lower-ranked regional teams, has been discontinued. Before the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy commences, the President’s Trophy first-class tournament for eight departmental teams and the non-first-class President’s Trophy will be played concurrently from September 12. The domestic season will conclude with the National T20 Cup, played in February and March, with its Silver division featuring 12 teams preceding the Gold division, which will run from February 23 until March 6.

The introduction of the National Champions Cup reflects the PCB’s commitment to strengthening Pakistan’s ODI talent pool ahead of the 2027 World Cup. The tournament will provide players with valuable 50-over experience, which is crucial for the success of the national team in the global tournament. The addition of teams from Sialkot and Peshawar to the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and National T20 Cup is expected to increase competition and broaden the talent base across the country. The PCB’s focus on both first-class and limited-overs competitions highlights its efforts to develop a well-rounded domestic structure that can produce players capable of performing at the highest level.     The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast widespread monsoon rains, thunderstorms and strong winds across most parts of the country from July 24 to July 28, warning that heavy rainfall could trigger urban flooding and disrupt normal life in several regions. According to the latest weather advisory, a low-pressure system over southwest Rajasthan and adjoining areas is drawing strong monsoon currents into Pakistan. Under its influence, rain of varying intensity is expected across Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir during the next few days. In Sindh, moderate to heavy rain is expected in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Sanghar, Hyderabad, Matiari, Jamshoro, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Khairpur, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Shikarpur and Thatta. Karachi is also likely to receive light rain and cloudy weather during the forecast period. In Punjab, rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Okara, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Vehari, Khanewal, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Muzaffargarh, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Murree and several nearby districts. Some places may experience heavy downpours. The weather department has also predicted rain in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, Swat, Chitral, Dir, Malakand, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Mardan, Nowshera, Charsadda, Kohat, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Lakki Marwat and other districts until July 27. In Balochistan, rainfall is expected in Zhob, Sherani, Loralai, Kohlu, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Jhal Magsi, Barkhan, Dera Bugti, Khuzdar and surrounding areas. Isolated heavy rainfall is also possible in some locations. The forecast further includes rain and thunderstorms in Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly in Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu, Diamer, Ghizer, Ghanche and Astore. Similar weather conditions are expected in Azad Kashmir, including Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Rawalakot, Bagh, Poonch, Mirpur, Kotli and nearby areas. The PMD has warned that heavy rainfall may lead to urban flooding in cities including Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Badin and several other low-lying areas. Strong winds and lightning may also damage weak buildings, electric poles, trees and temporary structures. Tourists travelling to mountainous regions have been advised to remain cautious due to the risk of slippery roads, flash floods and landslides. Farmers have also been urged to plan agricultural activities carefully and take necessary measures to protect standing crops and livestock from adverse weather. Provincial governments and disaster management authorities have been directed to remain on alert throughout the forecast period. Rescue services, emergency response teams and drainage machinery have been placed on standby to respond quickly to any weather-related incidents.

    Europe to witness rare total solar eclipse today

    A total solar eclipse is set to occur today, offering skywatchers across parts of Europe an opportunity to witness a rare astronomical phenomenon, according to Arab media reports. The eclipse is being described as the first total solar eclipse visible from Europe since 1999. The event will be particularly prominent in western Spain and Iceland, where observers will have the chance to see the Moon completely cover the Sun for a brief period. The total phase is expected to begin at around 6:27pm local time in the areas where the eclipse will be visible. Near Iceland, the period of totality is expected to last approximately two minutes and 18 seconds, making it one of the key locations for viewing the phenomenon. However, the eclipse will not be limited to areas experiencing totality. Several major European cities are expected to witness a significant partial eclipse. In Madrid and Barcelona, around 99% of the Sun’s disc will be obscured, while Paris is expected to experience approximately 92% coverage. London will see about 91% of the Sun covered, while Berlin is expected to experience an eclipse of around 85%. The exact appearance and timing of the eclipse will vary depending on the location of observers. Parts of Africa, Canada and the United States are also expected to witness the eclipse in its partial form, although the degree of visibility will differ from one region to another. Eclipse not visible in Pakistan Pakistanis will not be able to observe the solar eclipse, as the astronomical event will take place outside the country’s visible path. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has said that the eclipse will begin at approximately 8:34pm Pakistan Standard Time. It is expected to reach its maximum phase at around 10:46pm before ending at approximately 12:58am. Since the entire event will occur during nighttime in Pakistan, the eclipse will remain below the horizon and therefore cannot be seen from the country. The Meteorological Department has also indicated that another major astronomical event is expected later this month. A partial lunar eclipse is scheduled for August 28, but this event, too, will not be visible from Pakistan. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and temporarily blocks some or all of the Sun’s light from reaching certain parts of the Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon completely covers the visible disc of the Sun for observers located within the narrow path of totality.

Falling debris from the strikes damaged a private residential building along with several outbuildings and parked cars, while a fire broke out at a nonresidential structure in the area, Tkachenko said. Emergency crews rushed to the scene to contain the damage and assist residents. “Rescuers and all necessary services are working on the ground,” Tkachenko said. “The elimination of the consequences is ongoing.” Russia’s Defence Ministry confirmed carrying out the strike on the Ukrainian capital, stating on Telegram that its forces had targeted a military-industrial facility along with a fuel and lubricants depot located in Kyiv. The ministry additionally claimed that two dry cargo ships, which it alleged were transporting weapons and military equipment bound for Ukrainian ports, came under attack from drones while passing through waters south and east of the port city of Odesa. Russian regions report drone damage and injuries On the Russian side, five people sustained injuries and a fire erupted at the Ilsky Oil Refinery in the Krasnodar region after debris from a downed drone fell onto the facility, regional authorities reported. The Krasnodar Operational Headquarters said on Telegram that the injured were receiving all necessary medical care while emergency and special services worked at the scene. Separately, two people were injured when a drone crashed in the Russian city of Zadonsk, according to Lipetsk Governor Igor Artamonov, who posted details of the incident on Telegram. The crash damaged four private homes, a vehicle and a power line, Artamonov said, adding that power workers had already begun restoration efforts in the affected area. In the Samara region further east, one of the area’s industrial enterprises came under attack from a Ukrainian drone, said regional Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev in a post on the Russian social media platform Max. Fedorishchev said authorities were currently working to address the aftermath of the strike but did not immediately provide further details on the extent of the damage. Moscow claims mass drone interception Russia’s Defence Ministry also announced that its air defence systems had shot down and destroyed 397 Ukrainian drones over the course of the strikes, with the interceptions occurring over Russian territory, annexed Crimea and the Sea of Azov. Independent verification of the claims made by both Moscow and Kyiv remains difficult given the ongoing conflict, and neither side’s figures on damage, casualties or intercepted drones could be confirmed through independent sources.
