Pakistan to face Sri Lanka in CAVA opener

Hosts Pakistan will launch their campaign against Sri Lanka in the opening match of the Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA) Men’s Volleyball Championship at the Liaquat Gymnasium, Pakistan Sports Complex, following India’s last-minute withdrawal from the tournament.
The regional showpiece brings together teams from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Uzbekistan. The tournament schedule features three matches on the opening day: host nation Pakistan takes on Sri Lanka in the curtain-raiser, followed by Kazakhstan facing Nepal, and Uzbekistan taking on Bangladesh.
Addressing the media following the championship’s official trophy unveiling ceremony, Pakistan Volleyball Federation (PVF) Chairman Chaudhry Mohammad Yaqoob expressed disappointment over India’s decision to pull out of the competition at the eleventh hour. He explained that the PVF, in coordination with the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC), had completed all required documentation, secured necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs), and guaranteed comprehensive security measures specifically requested by the Indian delegation.
Highlighting the tournament’s significance despite the withdrawal, Yaqoob emphasized that the event remains one of the largest international volleyball spectacles hosted in the country, demonstrating Pakistan’s growing capacity to stage high-profile sports competitions safely and efficiently:
”We are surprised by India’s withdrawal after all necessary arrangements had been completed. At their request, the federation secured all required NOCs and comprehensive security guarantees to ensure the Indian team’s safe participation. Despite their absence, this championship remains a major international event that showcases Pakistan’s readiness to host world-class sports.”

Pakistan enters the championship with strong momentum following encouraging performances in recent international competitions. Team officials and coaches believe the players are well-prepared to make full use of home-court advantage and familiar conditions as they pursue the regional title.
The PVF extended a warm welcome to all visiting athletes, delegates, and officials, reassuring them that thorough arrangements have been implemented to guarantee a smooth and memorable tournament. Running through July 29, the championship aims to foster regional sportsmanship, elevate competitive standards, and provide local fans with top-tier international volleyball action.

China’s burger boom draws coffee chains and …

Burgers have become one of China’s most contested fast food categories, with budget minded diners and shrinking household sizes fueling a rush that now includes hotpot operators and coffee brands alongside established global chains. Yum China’s Pizza Hut Burger Bar concept, which places a dedicated burger counter inside existing Pizza Hut locations, expanded to more than 200 outlets within six months, the company said in July. Yum China plans to grow the format to between 500 and 600 outlets by the end of 2026, representing roughly 10 percent of its total Pizza Hut store network in China. The surge into burgers reflects broader changes in Chinese consumer habits. As households shrink and economic uncertainty keeps spending cautious, diners increasingly favor lower cost, portable meals that deliver convenience without sacrificing value. That shift has transformed burgers from a niche Western import long dominated by McDonald’s, KFC and Burger King into one of the most fiercely contested segments of China’s restaurant industry, drawing a wave of new entrants eager to capture market share. Last month, hotpot chain Haidilao entered the space with a new concept called Huanxianbao, or Fresh Burger, which sells burgers alongside pizza, pasta and fried chicken. Coffee chain M Stand has also opened burger focused locations in several cities. China’s Western style fast food market was valued at 499.65 billion yuan, or about $74.1 billion, in 2025 and is projected to reach 587.09 billion yuan by 2027, according to data provider iiMedia Research, even as several global brands face broader challenges in the market. Burgers ranked as the top preference among consumers surveyed, with 55 percent selecting the category. While still a relatively small slice of China’s overall fast food industry, the burger segment alone was worth $18.4 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow 8.7 percent annually through 2035, according to Emergen Research. Part of the category’s appeal lies in simple economics. Food industry analyst Zhu Danpeng said burgers offer a lower cost alternative to full service restaurant meals while still functioning as a substantial meal, calling them a strong value for money option amid cautious consumer spending. Wang Fang, a university student in Beijing, said burgers have become a default lunch choice for her and her classmates because they cost less than ordering several dishes at a sit down restaurant. She said a burger loaded with meat, vegetables and butter makes for an affordable, balanced meal. The category’s rise also tracks with shifting demographics. Growing numbers of single person households, smaller families and young urban professionals have driven demand for convenient meals sized for one, a trend Yum China says is opening opportunities across its brand portfolio. Pizza Hut added burgers to its menu in 2024, and by 2025 the category accounted for a mid single digit percentage of Pizza Hut’s total sales in China, the company said. Yum China expects burgers to generate more than 1 billion yuan in sales this year, representing 5 to 6 percent of the brand’s revenue. The company said burgers resonate strongly with takeaway and delivery customers in China, where 43 percent of consumers order delivery at least once a week, compared with a global average of 23 percent, according to Euromonitor. The growing appetite for burgers has drawn competitors from across the industry. Domestic chains such as Tasiting now compete directly with McDonald’s, Yum China’s KFC and Shake Shack for market share. International brands are eager to join the competition as well. When US chain Five Guys opened its first stores in Beijing this month, customers waited more than two hours to be served. Wendy’s said in May that it plans to enter the Chinese market and open as many as 1,000 franchised restaurants over the next decade. Liu Tao, a 48 year old musician in Beijing, regularly takes his 11 year old son to McDonald’s on Sundays, fitting the meal into a tight schedule between the boy’s math and English classes. He said burgers work well when time is short and he needs food that feels clean, quick and won’t bore his son, noting that his son often eats in the car on the way to his next class.

    Cambridge announces 2026 A-Level results in Pakist…

Cambridge International has released the results of its June 2026 examination session, with more than 100,000 students across Pakistan receiving their AS and A-Level results. Students from more than 850 schools in Pakistan took part in the examination session. The results were announced globally on Tuesday, with nearly 368,000 students worldwide receiving their Cambridge International AS and A-Level results. In Pakistan, thousands of students appeared for examinations in a wide range of subjects. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Business and Computer Science remained among the most popular choices. Cambridge officials congratulated students on completing their examinations and acknowledged the challenges faced by some candidates during the preparation period. Cambridge Pakistan Country Director Uzma Yousuf said this year’s results were particularly significant because some students had prepared for their examinations amid regional tensions, uncertainty and disruptions. She congratulated the students and praised teachers, parents and school communities for supporting candidates throughout the academic year. Yousuf said education should not be viewed only through examination grades. She stressed the importance of developing knowledge, confidence and practical skills that can help young people succeed in higher education, employment and their future lives. Cambridge International also said it was continuing to develop its assessment system. The organisation is working on digital examination initiatives and flexible assessment options aimed at giving students greater choice and accessibility. Cambridge qualifications are accepted by universities and educational institutions in many countries. The organisation said its international qualifications provide students with pathways to higher education both in their home countries and abroad. According to Cambridge, recent UK university application data showed that 98% of Cambridge International A-Level students who applied to British universities during the 2025 admissions cycle received at least one university offer. The organisation said its qualifications are designed to provide students with internationally recognised academic credentials while allowing them to study within their own countries. The latest results have also been announced amid concerns surrounding examination security in Pakistan during the 2026 examination cycle. Earlier this year, allegations emerged that Cambridge Mathematics examination papers had been circulated before scheduled tests. One A-Level Mathematics paper was cancelled and candidates were required to sit a replacement examination. A separate AS-Level Mathematics paper was also cancelled following reports of a leak. Further claims regarding the circulation of another Mathematics paper were later raised by students. The incidents led to calls for stronger examination security and prompted education authorities to seek investigations into the allegations. Cambridge has previously said it investigates reports concerning examination integrity and has urged students and parents to follow information released through its official channels. Meanwhile, students who appeared for the June 2026 IGCSE and O-Level examinations are expected to receive their results on August 18.

Iran says Hormuz cannot be seized by ‘tweet or w…

Iran has rejected US threats over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, with Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi declaring that the waterway cannot be taken over through a presidential order, social media post, aircraft carrier or election speech. Gharibabadi’s remarks came after US President Donald Trump threatened to declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory, according to Iranian media reports. The comments have added another layer of tension to an already volatile confrontation between Washington and Tehran. Writing on X, Gharibabadi said the strategic waterway could not be brought under American control through political statements or military pressure. He argued that decisions concerning the strait remained in Iran’s hands. “The Strait of Hormuz was, is and will remain Iranian,” Gharibabadi said, stressing that Tehran would determine when the passage could be opened or closed. The deputy foreign minister also said Iran was not intimidated by American threats and would continue its blockade until Washington acknowledged what he described as its “strategic defeats” and abandoned what he called unrealistic expectations. Trump has separately warned that he could soon announce plans to designate the Strait of Hormuz as US territory. His reported comments have intensified concerns over the future of one of the world’s most important energy corridors. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Arabian Sea. A major disruption to traffic through the narrow waterway could have significant consequences for global energy markets because substantial volumes of oil and gas pass through it. Iran’s latest statement therefore carries significance far beyond its dispute with Washington. Any prolonged confrontation around the strait could affect commercial shipping, energy supplies and international markets. The exchange of threats also highlights the broader strategic struggle between Iran and the United States, with both sides showing little sign of backing down. For Tehran, the message is clear: control of Hormuz is being presented as a matter of sovereignty and national security, while Washington’s threats are being dismissed as insufficient to alter Iran’s position.

  • Pakistan’s imports from Iran hit record $1.395 b…

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s imports from Iran surged to a record level during the fiscal year 2025-26, highlighting the growing importance of bilateral trade despite heightened geopolitical tensions in the region. According to sources, Pakistan imported goods worth around $1.395 billion from Iran during FY2025-26, marking a significant increase compared with the previous fiscal year. The data shows that imports from Iran grew by approximately 12% year-on-year during the latest fiscal year. The increase reflects a continuing upward trend in Pakistan’s purchases from its western neighbour, with the import bill rising steadily over the past several years. The growth became particularly pronounced in June 2026. Pakistan’s imports from Iran reached approximately $119 million during the month, representing a 47% increase compared with June 2025, according to the sources. On a month-on-month basis, imports also showed notable growth. Pakistan imported around $100 million worth of goods from Iran in March 2026, while the June figure stood significantly higher. Imports show long-term upward trend The latest figures indicate that Pakistan’s reliance on Iranian imports has expanded considerably over the years. In FY2024-25, Pakistan’s imports from Iran stood at approximately $1.241 billion, compared with $1.395 billion in FY2025-26. The import value was even higher in FY2023-24, when Pakistan purchased goods worth around $1.37 billion from Iran. Despite fluctuations from year to year, the overall trend has remained substantially higher than the levels recorded several years ago. In FY2022-23, imports from Iran amounted to approximately $880 million, while the figure stood at around $773.8 million in FY2021-22. Pakistan’s imports from Iran were recorded at approximately $518.6 million in FY2020-21, showing how sharply bilateral import activity has expanded compared with earlier years. The import bill stood at around $440 million in FY2019-20, meaning the latest figure of $1.395 billion represents more than three times the level recorded six years earlier. Growing trade despite regional tensions The continued rise in imports underscores the importance of cross-border economic activity between Pakistan and Iran. The two neighbouring countries share a long border and have historically maintained trade links involving energy, food products and other commodities. The latest increase also comes amid a challenging regional environment, with geopolitical tensions affecting trade routes, commodity markets and economic activity across the region. For Pakistan, trade with neighbouring countries remains strategically important as the country seeks to manage its import requirements, diversify supply sources and strengthen economic links within the region.
