Omega-3 linked to better lungs

A new medical study suggests that omega-3 fatty acids may do more than protect the heart and brain.

Researchers say these healthy fats could also help keep the lungs working well for a longer time by slowing the natural decline in lung function.

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in foods such as oily fish, fish oil supplements walnuts, flaxseeds chia seeds vegetable oils and fortified foods. They are already known for their anti inflammatory effects and may help lower the risk of heart disease stroke and some types of cancer.

Now scientists believe they may also play an important role in supporting lung health.

The study was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

The research was led by Dr. Patricia A. Cassano from Cornell University in New York.

She explained that while many studies have looked at how diet affects heart disease and cancer much less research has focused on how nutrition influences lung health.

To explore this researchers carried out two separate studies. The first study followed 15,063 adults in the United States with an average age of 56.

Most participants were healthy and had no diagnosed lung disease when the study began. They were monitored for between seven and 20 years.

Researchers found that people with higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood experienced a slower decline in lung function over time.

In the second study scientists analyzed genetic data from more than 500,000 people in Europe.

They examined genetic markers linked to omega-3 levels in the blood and found the same pattern. Higher omega-3 levels were associated with better lung function and healthier lungs.

Although the findings are encouraging experts say omega-3 supplements should not be seen as a cure or a replacement for medical treatment.

A balanced diet regular exercise avoiding smoking and following medical advice remain the best ways to protect lung health.

According to the researchers, the new evidence strongly supports the theory that the water at Blood Falls originates from a reservoir of ancient seawater that became trapped beneath the Taylor Glacier millions of years ago. The researchers said the presence of strong marine genetic signatures in the red saline water provides evidence that an ancient marine ecosystem once existed there before becoming isolated beneath Antarctica’s thick ice sheet. Scientists believe this discovery could improve our understanding of how microscopic organisms survive in some of the harshest environments on Earth. The findings may also help researchers investigate the possibility of life beneath the icy surfaces of other worlds, including Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons and Enceladus, a moon of Saturn.

    When South Korean company SmartStudy uploaded a simple 90-second children’s song to YouTube in June 2016, few people could have imagined that it would become a worldwide sensation. The company now known as The Pinkfong Company, created the “Baby Shark” video which later became the most-watched video in YouTube history. It has now crossed more than 16 billion views. The company recently made another big move as its shares began trading on the Korea Exchange.  The stock rose by more than 9% at the start of trading. At the listing ceremony, CEO Kim Min-seok celebrated by playing a traditional drum while the company’s Baby Shark mascot stood beside him. SmartStudy was founded in 2010 with only three employees. According to Kim the first office was so small that the company struggled financially during its early months. It later focused on creating simple, educational and interactive content for children. That was when the idea for Baby Shark began to take shape. In 2022, the company changed its name to The Pinkfong Company inspired by its popular cartoon character, Pinkfong Fox.  Today it has more than 340 employees and offices in cities including Los Angeles, Tokyo and Shanghai. The Baby Shark melody was inspired by an old American camp song from the 1970s. Pinkfong gave it a faster beat simple lyrics and easy dance moves that children could quickly learn. The song did not become an instant hit.  However after its dance moves appeared in children’s programs across Southeast Asia social media users began sharing their own videos. The trend quickly spread around the world. Baby Shark soon became a major source of income for the company.  Toys animated shows licensing deals and live performances helped turn the song into a much bigger entertainment brand. The company also faced a copyright dispute in 2019 when an American composer accused it of copying his melody. Pinkfong argued that the song was based on a traditional folk tune. South Korea’s Supreme Court eventually ruled in the company’s favor removing a major legal concern ahead of its public listing. Today Baby Shark still contributes around 25% of the company’s revenue.  However Pinkfong’s newer franchise, Bebefinn, has grown even faster and now accounts for more than 40% of revenue. The company says it is working on new characters films and digital content to reduce its dependence on one hit song.  It also plans to explore artificial intelligence and use audience data to create content that better matches children’s interests. Many parents praise Pinkfong for making educational content fun and engaging while others feel some of its songs are too energetic. Still Baby Shark remains a familiar part of children’s birthday parties school events and family entertainment around the world.

  • Team sets record after 10 T-Shirt folding attempts

    David Rush, who has achieved more than 200 Guinness World Records has added another record to his name. This time he teamed up with 10 co-workers and a mental skills expert from Las Vegas to set a new record for folding T-shirts. During a team building trip to Las Vegas the 12-member team attempted to fold 12 T-shirts in a relay race as quickly as possible. The previous record was 2 minutes and 24 seconds. After several failed attempts David and his team finally completed the challenge in just 2 minutes and 19.65 seconds. The challenge was not only about speed. Team members also had to follow the rules carefully. Folding a shirt incorrectly starting too early or making even a small mistake could cancel the entire attempt. The team needed 10 attempts to break the record. Several early attempts failed because of rule violations.  Some members folded the shirts incorrectly while others started their turn too soon. On their final successful attempt all 12 members followed the rules perfectly and finished the relay in 2 minutes and 19.65 seconds officially setting a new Guinness World Record for the fastest relay-style T-shirt folding challenge.
